Italy Referendum

Postby Morgantown West Virginia » Sun Dec 04, 2016 9:32 am

The Italian referendum today will have a major impact on Europe tonight. The referendum is on reforms to Italy's Senate, and how it is elected.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_c ... ndum,_2016

But, is seems to have turned to how PM Matteo Renzi says he will resign if the proposition on the ballot is rejected causing political instability, and how Italian banks could fail in that event.

Why did (PM my bad) Renzi promise to resign if the referendum goes the wrong way? That sounds like a very bad idea to me.

The result should be No. The reforms are pretty mediocre at best and are far shorter reaching than the electoral reform the Chamber of Deputies had earlier this year. The only reason the PM threated to resign is he wanted to turn a referendum on some poorly planned reforms into a vote on his government. Smart on his part, but a terrible way to get Yes votes. Hopefully it loses, he resigns, the governing coalition falls apart, and a snap election under the new "Italicum" electoral law takes place. Sure, the Senate may still be a bit shaky after a snap election but the government would be far more stable than it is now if that were to happen

I'm predicting a no vote and then Renzi resigns. Hopefully what ChicagoBoys says is right and there will be a snap election, M5S would make some big gains and PD would be destroyed.

He should have learned from David Cameron (but he made this promise before Brexit).

Hopefully they won't elect a porn star to their senate this time.

Nope. It's not about Italy leaving or staying in the EU or in the EZ (btw, such referenda aren't allowed by Italian Constitution).

The referendum is on reforms to Italy's Senate, and how it is elected.

Not just that, but it is a major bit of it. It also involves reforms to the amount of legislative and administrative powers devoluted to Regions, and reforming the confidence vote needed to form a new cabinet.

But, is seems to have turned to how PM Matteo Renzi says he will resign if the proposition on the ballot is rejected causing political instability, and how Italian banks could fail in that event.

Which they won't as they're fairly solid (as certified by shakedown tests by the ECB), plus Draghi has already vowed to intervene should financial speculation attack Italy.

Interesting fact: the reform will allow a referendum on EU permanence and the electoral law "Italicum" will make the victory of 5 star movement possible.

This site can be seen from Italy and the ballots are still going on. NO CAMPAIGNING DURING VOTING OPERATIONS - it is a serious breach of Italian laws and it could lead to Nationstates being blocked in Italy.

If that's the case Italian internet laws are even more asinine that proposed American ones.

When on says "the outcome SHOULD be ... because etc etc" it is giving arguments in favour of one of the two choices, hence campaigning.

It's not "internet laws", it's a whole-country, all-media law. Total ban on campaigning starting on the eve of the election day. The last minute for campaigning was 23.59 of Friday.

I highly doubt it would lead to NS being banned. Even if it did, I have a right to free speech and as America still owns the internet your censorship is unconstitutional and could lead to America banning NS.

Regardless, No seems the likely outcome and every Italian needs to get out to vote and vote No

Wait, people on foreign websites aren't allowed to state their opinion on the referendum's outcome, because it might get their websites banned?

Those are some rather crazy regulations.

No, on NS you don't.

and as America still owns the internet

No it doesn't.

your censorship is unconstitutional

Quite not. Italian IP blocks are regulated by Italian laws that follow, of course, the Italian constitution.

and could lead to America banning NS.

Curiously, no. By American law, a privately-owned operation is perfectly free to set its own rules about speech. It's the US GOVERNMENT that's not allowed to censor PROTECTED speech. Note that not even in America every speech is considered "protected" by the First Amendment.

Regardless, No seems the likely outcome and every Italian needs to get out to vote and vote No

Cut it out now.
