Ismos Peace Prize

The Ismos Peace Prize has been awarded every year since 1890, following the death of former Ghantish Prime Minister Irat Ismos, who founded the Ghantish Peace Committee, which was renamed in his honor following his death.

Ismos, Ghant's first Prime Minister, who advocated and achieved non-violent resolution during the latter part of the Ghantish Civil War and remained a committed pacifist his entire life, stipulated in his will that a yearly award should be given,

"To the person who has done the most of best work for peace between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and of preventing or ending conflict."

In honor of Irat Ismos, the award has been presented each year to a notable individual or group in the world who has contributed to the cause of peace.

The recipient will be presented the award at the Ghish Concert Hall by the Chairman of the Ismos Peace Committee alongside the Empress of Ghant.

Hey Ghant, long time no see. Figure I'll give this the old college try.

Nomination for Ismos Peace Prize

Full Name of Nominee: Bard Æudun Baldrsen

Nationality of Nominee: Insaeldic

Profession of Nominee: Military General, Political Activist.

Please explain briefly why this candidate should be considered for the Ismos Peace Prize: Retierd Brigadier Baldrsen was once know as the "Warrior Monk" thanks to his often poetic speeches to units before being sent to combat zones. He however retired in 2007 after a highly publicized schuffle with the civilian leadership. While the reasons for his departure from the Officers Corps have been speculated upon but never fully announced he soon found himselve in politics. While during the administration of the Tyrsen government he acted as a nominal opposition voice calling out civil and military institutions for prolonging the conflict by refusing to hand over vital aspects of the slow transition from Insaeldic front line operations to mostly Zanjani forces during the Insurgency in Zanjan.

He however didn't stay an oppositional voice for to much longer as the Kjaldrsen government picked him up as a special envoy to the Democratic Zanjani Government. It was in this position that he helped lead the Zanjani democracy through it first transition of power as former president Zalmay Pedram gave over presidential powers to newly elected president Jamalzadah Mureed. He was also a major political force in helping unify a military and political solution to radicalization within the nation and helping to combat radical Islamist groups that continue to operate. He has also advocated for the rights of woman and religious minorities in the deeply Islamic society.

The Kjaldrsen government has said that he has helped put them in a far better position that it was at the start of his administration and for his work in creating a stable government but also creating a more peaceful situation in the area. It was for these many reasons that we have nominated him for this prestigious award.,

Nomination for Ismos Peace Prize

Full Name of Nominee: Sally Haldeman

Nationality of Nominee: Adiran

Profession of Nominee: Chair of the Isidium Overseas Committee

Please explain briefly why this candidate should be considered for a Cornellian Peace Prize: In the past year, the Isidium Foundation has transitioned from a relief organization focused on Cetan issues to a multinational aid group with operations spanning three continents. Peace involves more than simply ending hostilities. It requires that the people involved have a home to go back to with the necessities of life. Without food, water, shelter, medical care, and education, the uncertainty and the panic of war remains.

What sets the Foundation apart is their steadfast resolve in the face of overwhelming odds. This organization's volunteers, unarmed and at the mercy of the elements, have shown an unwavering determination in their goals to restore war-torn communities. The danger they face on a regular basis shows just what kind of sacrifice they are willing to make in the name of humanitarian aid. As Chairman of the Foundation's Overseas Committee Sally Haldeman has presided over many of these efforts.

Full Name of Nominator: Secretary of State Joseph Deol

Nationality of Nominator: Adiran

Profession/Background of Nominator: Joseph Deol is the sitting Adiran Secretary of State, and he's been known to work closely with the Department of Aid and International Development to help make the Foundation's work possible.

Nomination for Ismos Peace Prize

Full Name of Nominee: The Isidum Foundation

Nationality of Nominee: Aduran

Profession of Nominee: Isidium is a non-governmental, not for profit organization which provides food, shelter, medicine, basic infrastructure and education to refugees and people who have lost resources due to war, famine, and natural disasters.

Please explain briefly why this candidate should be considered for the Ismos Peace Prize:
It is perhaps unconventional to nominate an organization rather than an individual, but Isidium is made up of individuals who work together to help others at risk to themselves and at little gain for themselves. Isidium has been vital in helping transform New edom into a peaceful state. Furthermore, Isidium's volunteers worked tirelessly to bring about a peaceful settlement in Peregrino and have helped in nearly every natural disaster and refugee crisis in the Region since the start of the 21st Century. It would reflect well on teh Region if there were a regionally recognized acclaim for their efforts as an encouragement to charitable persons everywhere.,

Full Name of Nominator:Mara Adah Elizabeth Rebecca Obed, Queen of the Allied States of New Edom

Nationality of Nominator: New Edomite

Profession/Background of Nominator: Head of State; educated privately; former co-chair of the National Council for Refugees, former World Assembly Ambassador, former chair of the National Agricultural Reform Committee

Nomination for Ismos Peace Prize

Full Name of Nominee: Nymun Izarbegiratzeak

Nationality of Nominee: Ghantish

Profession of Nominee: Prime Minister of Ghant

Please explain briefly why this candidate should be considered for the Ismos Peace Prize: Nymun Izarbegiratzeak has been a man of compassion, peace and conviction since his early days as a political theorist in the 1960s. Before becoming Prime Minister in 2014, he was a noted author, pundit, comedian, public speaker and lecturer that used his many platforms to advocate against the proliferation of war, human rights abuses, authoritarianism and extremism not just in Ghant, but around the world.

During his short tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Izarbegiratzeak has often served as the voice of reason in international affairs, working towards diplomatic resolutions to conflicts such as those found in Ceti, New Edom, Ashab and Gloria Regis. Domestically he has emphasized a program of education, infrastructure development and counter-terrorism that would benefit all Ghantar, and not just a few. That is his mantra at home and abroad, that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Third Time’s the Charm: Isidium Foundation Awarded Ismos Peace Prize
By John Igara| GHISH | Posted: December 19th, 2016 12:00 GST

GHISH – The third time has indeed proven to be the charm for the Isidium Foundation with the Ismos Peace Committee.

The Isidium Foundation, an Adiran non-profit multi-national aid group which sends volunteers to war-torn and destitute parts of the world and encourages them not only to save lives by providing essential services to people in need, but to do so unarmed and at great personal risk, was awarded the Ismos Peace Prize Monday after two years of serving as the runners-up.

Founded in 1996 as an Adiran-based relief organization that operated in Ceti, the Isidium Foundation made its initial strides during the wars in Ceti in the 2000s, providing assistance to Imperium refugees and others affected by the three wars between Adiron and the Imperium. The Isidium Foundation recently made the transition into a multi-national operation. Under Foreign Operations Committee Chair Sally Haldeman, Isidium has seen action in New Edom during the Third Civil War, in Peregrino and North Arcologia.

According to the Committee, the 2016 Ismos Peace Prize has been awarded to the Isidium Foundation "in recognition of the organization's pioneering humanitarian work on several continents." The Ismos Institute based in Ghish released a press statement declaring their choice for the 2016 recipient:

“Since its foundation, the Isidium Foundation has adhered to the fundamental principle that all disaster victims, whether the disaster is natural or human in origin, have a right to professional assistance, given as quickly and efficiently as possible. National boundaries and political circumstances or sympathies must have no influence on who is to receive humanitarian help. By maintaining a high degree of independence, the organization has succeeded in living up to these ideals.

By intervening so rapidly, the Isidium Foundation calls public attention to humanitarian catastrophes, and by pointing to the causes of such catastrophes, the organization helps to form bodies of public opinion in support of those who have the greatest need and in opposition to violations and abuses of power.

In critical situations, marked by violence and brutality, the humanitarian work of the Isidium Foundation enables the organization to create openings for contacts between the opposed parties. At the same time, each fearless and self-sacrificing volunteer shows each victim a human face, stands for respect for that person's dignity, and is a source of hope for peace and reconciliation.

The selfless altruism of their volunteers, who do their work unarmed and in often dangerous situations, is worthy of great admiration and respect. The volunteers of the Isidium Foundation are an inspiration and a testament to the notion that anyone can be an instrument of good in the world. It is for these reasons that the Ismos Peace Prize Committee has chosen the Isidium Foundation and all the people that risk their lives daily to deliver upon its message to be the recipients of the Ismos Peace Prize.”

The Ismos Peace Prize was first awarded in 1890 in honor of Irat Ismos, the first Prime Minister of Ghant, who also founded the Ismos Institute which serves as the headquarters for the Ismos Peace Committee, the members of which are appointed by Parliament to serve five year terms. The committee members are highly guarded about their deliberations and rarely let slip advance word on the winner. However, nominees for the prize are often identified publicly, as well as who came in what place during the voting process. The award was stipulated in Ismos’s will to be given "To the person who has done the most of best work for peace between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and of preventing or ending conflict."

The choice of the Isidium Foundation is not expected to hinder the organization’s work, but the chairman of the Ismos Peace Committee, Gorka Aguirre, said the panel hoped that it would inspire the Isidium Foundation and similar organizations to continue their work and encourage others to emulate their standard.

"There is growing need for humanitarian organizations of this kind in today's world," Aguirre said. But he singled out the group's commitment to New Edom, because the misery there often fades from public consciousness. “People often neglect the importance of those services that most of us take for granted,” Aguirre added in his statement. “The things that come so easily for many people do not come so easily for everyone in many parts of the world.”

Other candidates for the 2016 Prize that were indicated in the press included retired Insaeldic General Æudun Baldrsen, the Shrai Mother Empress Chella, current Ghantish Prime Minister Nymun Izarbegiratzeak and former Demphorian President John Maynard Winsdor. According to press information this is the Isidium Foundation’s third consecutive nomination, and according to sources finished as the runner-up in the voting process to Edomite General and President Perrin Pahath-Moab in 2014, for his role in championing the Cornellian Peace Organization, and Queen Mara of New Edom in 2015, for her role in promoting peace in the Third Edomite Civil War.

While the awarding of Queen Mara was widely applauded both in Ghant and abroad, the decision to award Pahath-Moab in 2014 was a highly controversial one, being met with widespread criticism in the Ghantish press and in several foreign countries, especially Adiron. Two Ismos Peace Committee members resigned over the decision, and in recent years the Committee has come under increased scrutiny. The decision to finally award the Isidium Foundation seems like a solid one in any case, and another worthy addition to the list of Ismos Peace Prize recipients.

The Peace Prize will be presented to the Isidium Foundation on December 23rd at the Imperial Ghish Concert Hall by Peace Prize Laureate Empress Sophia of Ghant, Gorka Aguirre and Institute member Sara Haribec, great-granddaughter of Laureate Prime Minister Malderi Haribec and descendant of Irat Ismos through her mother. Congratulations to the Isidium Foundation and all of its volunteers!

Excerpt from Isidium Foundation Acceptance Speech
Speech by Sally Haldeman, Chair of the Isidium Overseas Committee

We in the Isidium Foundation today have the great honor and recognition to receive the Ismos Peace Prize. I must first and foremost express our warm gratitude. My thanks go to Empress Sophia of Ghant and the members of the royal family who have honored us with their presence. They also go to the Ismos Committee which has nominated the Isidium Foundation for this distinction.

I thank the Chairman, Prime Minister Aguirre, for the fine words he extended to us. We shall remember and cherish them as a constant encouragement in our work. And I thank this large assembly of outstanding personalities who have honored us by their presence.

But while expressing my heartfelt gratitude, I must ask all of you to understand that this prize, which is so welcome, is addressed to many people.

It is my privilege to be the person who receives this prize and to express our gratitude. But I ask you to see behind me tens of thousands of refugees. They are in all parts of Cornellia, in Ceti, Ayaca, Hostillia, and Acheron. The awarding of the 2016 peace prize to the Foundation was a message to refugees that they were not forgotten.

I have no formal right to speak on behalf of all refugees, but I believe that I express their feelings when I say to the Ismos Committee: Thank you. You have reminded the world of refugees. Thank you because you, by your choice, have again directed the world’s attention to the vast human problem of displaced persons the world over.

It is also my privilege to speak on behalf of all of the Foundation's organizations, each of whom is vital to our mission, those are the Health Volunteer Agency, the Silva Trust, Habitat for Life, the Water and Sanitation Agency, Teachers for the Future, and the Emerick Fund.

The Foundation intends to put the peace prize towards the HVA's operating budget. We will use the funds to purchase and distribute over-the-counter medication, lifesaving prescription drugs, and vaccinations, all of which are in constant demand wherever we operate.
In-character name of the nation is "Adiron," because I like the name better.
