US Military

Postby Free United People of Earth » Tue Nov 29, 2016 7:33 pm

Please tell me what you guys like about the US Military (and please don't post anything that you don't like about it either).

I like the F-22. The F-22 has combined technology to make it a superior fighter in many ways. It has stealth compacibility, is able to go fast (like most jets), has pretty cool systems installed in it to be able to do many things, like tracking other fighters, bombers, etc.
Image

I also like that we have Super Carriers. They are big mobile bases that are able to have aircraft stationed on it. We can use them to support countries that we support and in times of need, we can send the US Navy over seas to help deliever relief supplies to 3rd world countries that were davestated by natural disasters.
Image

We also have men that have battle experience and they are able to provide good reflections on the equipment they used while in combat so that we are able to adapt and improve our equipment as technology advances.

We also have the Abrams Main Battle Tank. It is arguably the strongest tank in the world (due to having been in several combat in recent years). That's a lot of hard work to have developed a tank that is strong yet able to accomplish a variety of missions.

Being able to counter those commies and Rushkies, that's the best part.

Also; our Leopard II can beat the Abrams anyday :D

Hopefully I get my Green Card soon and therefore become eligible to join. I would enlist as a reservist and become a proud Weekend Marine for Uncle Sam. It is after all better than nothing.

I hope you do too!
I wish our regulation was slightly different so that I could find some way to help serve in active duty. Sometimes I think I should go help Israel because they allow people with my disability to serve in active duty xD I'm not sure how they do that without cochlear implants though xP

Gotta love those B52s and their huge payloads of unadulterated freedom.

XD yep xP
I did see something about that this morning:

A fighter aircraft is escorting a B-52. The fighter pilot is extolling the virtues of his aircraft over the radio, touting his ability to perform various manuevers. The B-52 pilot, having had just about enough, comments that he can do something the fighter can’t. The dubious fighter bets that he can’t. Several minutes go by and the B-52 pilot announces that he has just shut down two engines (for those who don't know, a B-52 has eight engines).

And another:

Another tale has our intrepid fighter pilot escorting a mid-sized cargo plane (twin engined, the fighter pilot wasn't going to make that mistake again). When the cargo pilot makes a claim that he can do something the fighter can’t, the fighter pilot is incredulous. After several minutes, the cargo pilot announces that he has just gotten up, stretched, used the latrine, and grabbed a fresh cup of coffee before returning to the flight deck.

Why do I get the feeling that this thread is bound to devolve in a circle-jerk of bragging and gloating by overly patriotic Americans about how awesome their armed forces and country in general are, with most of the speakers having never served themselves in any capacity...

For all it's might and technological supremacy, the US military is perhaps also the most overrated force in the world, in no small part thanks to the efforts of the propaganda department in Hollywood. Fact of the matter is, the US armed forces have never won a fair fight against comparable foe since WWII, and strategically lost pretty much every major war they have entered ever since even if tactically being successful.

It doesn't take much skill or determination to steamroll some banana republic with downgraded 1970's-era arms foolish enough to get in the way, and even these banana republics have proven surprisingly resilient against American invasion. The myth of American invincibility derives from the assumption that their military will be face a straight-up fight, in which there would indeed be few who could remotely hope to match the US forces. Thing is, the enemies of United States have long since recognized the benefits of asymmetric warfare that can eventually dissuade even such a formidable nation from further military actions.

There is a reason why the United States military has never won a "fair fight" against comparable foes since WWII. There has been no comparable foe since WWII, except for the Soviet Union.

Actually we loose politically and not militarily. My father who was 2nd ID , he was in Iraq and Afghanistan and he from personal experiences says that we win militarily. Now if we fight a other first world nation it would be a US win because of NATO and the US' air supremacy. The Navy and the Airforces are under complete US control in any possible wars at this point but on the ground its a toss up. Now I do agree with you that we ill trained to fight in symmetrical warfare .

We've never fought a comparable foe since WWII. Hell, I'd say we never fought a comparable foe since WWI.

We won Korea.

Vietnam, we would've won if we cared enough, and we pulled out before we could lose. That was politics, not combat.

That doesn't change the fact itself. You cannot really gauge the skill and preparedness level of an army that has never faced a battle with a comparable foe in it's present incarnation.

The US wars of late are all much like a professional kickboxer beating the shit out of a little boy. The boy might dodge some punches, maybe even hit back a few times, and maybe even actually hurt the kickboxer on occasion, but for all his efforts, the result is going to be obvious. Still, that doesn't really tell you much about the kickboxer himself (asides from him being a violent bully who beats little boys) - you simply cannot judge how he will fare against another kickboxer, if all he does is harasses small children.

The US military is just such a kickboxer, designed to fight others of it's own weight and class, yet ending up only beating on kids. Moreover, the kids have learned how to fight back, especially in the past two decades.

Regimes the majority of which the United States themselves propped up, or regimes which were propped up in reaction to their expanisonist policies, mind it - making the "kids" metaphore an all the more ironic pun.

I think one could level similar allegations of overratedness at most major 'kickboxer' militaries, however. Certainly China, and probably Russia too. Simply, none of the great powers has fought an equal opponent recently.

No, but the sheer fact that nothing else has risen to comparable levels of strength tells you everything you need to know about the capability of the United States military.

There is a reason why the 21st century has been an era of relative geopolitical stability. Trust me when I say that it has nothing to do with "weakness" of the United States military, perceived or otherwise.

Statistically speaking, the United States military is without question the most powerful armed force currently in existence, a fact easily demonstrated. What I do question is how effectively this power is wielded.

War is an extension of politics, an instrument to attain a nation's political goals, so an army's overall effectiveness can only be assessed by it's ability to achieve those goals, not the statistics on paper, or even their operational performance. As Vietnam demonstrably attested, it is fully possible to win a war even while tactically losing every single major battle. Given the overall results of the US military campaigns in the past few decades, I'd say that the US military is way less effective than it would be comfortable for any American to admit. If the world's mightiest military is unable to crush a bunch of religious fanatics with nothing but obsolete small arms and suicide bombs for over a decade now, then it is evidently not doing a very good job.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

If the US wants to keep ahead of its rivals for superpower-dom then it ought to improve their warfighter tech. For example, if 5th-gen fighters are too costly and expensive, at least get a 4.5-GEN fighter with the same controls and maneuverability and wielding AESA, but no fancy stealth skins yet they can draw on the shapes of 5th-GEN fighters.

Nevertheless the US military is doing technologically fine*. Tactics and strategies are also doing fine**.

*The lack of a dedicated submarine hunter in its naval arsenal disturbs me. Even more so, get the navy an all-AESA fleet. And turn its airforce into all 4.5-gen aircraft. That'll surely keep it ahead of its enemies at the technological level.

**Military and political exercises on guerrilla warfare, anyone?
