The Great War [OOC|Open]

The Great War

"Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?"

Chapter One: The Guns of August

Diplomacy has failed. Unable to resolve the furies unleashed by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian-supported terrorist groups, Europe has now plunged itself into a deadly and bitter conflict, the horror of which it cannot yet realize. Appeals to patriotism and nationalism has drawn throngs of young men and boys to the recruiting office, eager to stike a blow against their country's enemies, mere boys just like themselves. Cries of "Beat back the Hun!", "Serbian Muß Sterbien!", and "Rodina-mat' zovyot!" fill the air, drowning out any call for peace or reason. The stage is now set for the greatest tragedies of the 20th Century, what now remains is watch each chapter unfold, with all it's follies and failures, tragedies and triumphs. The decisions made in these long hours shall have consequences that no man can have forseen. The world will no doubt emerge changed, and this bloody contest shall determine the shapers of this new world. The cost shall be high and the suffering endless, all for a scrap of land, or to settle some old score.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.

Welcome to the Great War, a Military/Political RP of the First World War. You will take control of one of the many nations of Europe, Africa, the Near East, or Asia on the road to World War. It will be your leadership that will determine the fate of your nation, and the world, for decades to come.

National Opinion and National Will

National Opinion and National Will both play an important role in the RP, National Opinion determining a Nation's willingness to join the war and which side of the war the nation supports, and National Will determining the Nation's will to fight and carry on. Both systems work on a twenty-point scale, National Will ranging from +10 to -10, and National Opinion Ranging from +10 Allied Powers to +10 Central Powers

National Bonuses and Maluses

Each nation has a set of bonues and maluses, giving them unique advantages and problems, giving the RP a dose of asymmetry. They can affect everything from Combat to Industry, National Will to Espionage.

WIP

Germany
Great General Staff - Germany has one of the most well-organized armies in Europe, and has logistical and organization abilities without equal. Her Great General Staff, the first such General Staff of its kind, is undoubtedly one of the finest military institutions ever conceived, being responsible for orchestrating the numerous Prussian victories in 1866 and 1870, and gives Germany an edge over her opponents in terms of military command and control as well as planning. Her Generals and officers include some of the finest tactical and strategic minds in Europe.

Titans of Industry - Germany (and their Prussian predecessors) have proved early and bold adapters of new technology. The German economy is the largest and most powerful in Europe, and dominates the fields of chemistry and physics. Germany is also a world innovator in building the welfare state. German workers enjoy health, accident and maternity benefits, canteens, changing rooms and a national pension scheme.

The Army Possesses a State - The German military hierarchy is at times quite rigid, and dislikes to veer away from what is planned. Furthermore, the success of Prussian military victories and the eventual reunification of Germany through the use of force have imbued a spirit of militarism across the Fatherland. Strong armed forces wielded by a despotic monarch are a forgivable sin. The end result is that Germany is less inclined to seek a peaceful resolution to any conflict at the risk of being seen to be losing her national dignity.

Great Britain
Britannia Rules the Waves - The Royal Navy is famed for it's exploits and it's valour, and is reputedly without equal. Britain has a long-standing tradition of seamanship and takes great pride in it's navy.

Commonwealth - Britannia rules the Empire on which the Sun never Sets. They have a vast number of oversees holdings, and their dominions are some of their staunchest allies.

Lions led by Donkeys - The Upper Staff and many of the British Generals are incompetent on an almost unbelievable level. This will severely hinder their combat abilities for some time.

Austria-Hungary
Submarine Pioneers - Austria-Hungary was a pioneer in submarine warfare, a distinction boosted by the sub pens and armament works in Trieste. Their submarine captains are some of the most skilled and experienced in Europe.

Codebreakers - During the war, Austro-Hungarian Codebreakers, led by Major Hermann Pokorny, proved adept at cracking enemy codes, which greatly aided the Central Powers' war effort.

Ethnic Turmoil - A nation with dozens of ethnic groups, the Austro-Hungarian Empire has recently suffered disturbances due to rising nationalism of ethnic minorities. This could lead to a severe crisis in the future.

France
"They shall not pass!" - The French Army will prove to be strongly patriotic in the defense of France, and will hold the line against any invader, sometimes even to the death.

Élan - The French Infantry possesses great valour and cuts a dashing figure in their bright blue uniforms. Their morale may hold out longer than other soldiers have given up.

La République - The French Republic is fraught with division and infighting. The Allies can only hope this does not boil over into outright conflict.

Russia
Holy Mother Russia - Russia's people have a strong devotion to their Motherland, and will go to extreme lengths to defend her.

Realm of Forest and Snow - Russia is an endless land, stretching from the Baltic to the Pacific, and from the icy north pole to the warm waters of the Caspian and Black seas. Taking her will require incredible logistics, especially since the country itself fights any invader.

Ripe for Revolution - Ethnic turmoil, economic troubles, and political unrest have left Russia ripe for revolution or uprising.

Ottoman Empire
Caliphate - The Ottoman Sultan is also Caliph, supreme head of Sunni Islam. This gives him a great deal of religious influence with Sunni Nations.

German Advisors - The Ottoman Empire receives a great deal of military support from Germany, which has aided them in modernizing their military, as well as updating their strategic plans.

Restive Minorities - Many of the Ottoman Empire's ethnic minorities are on the brink of revolt, particularly the Arabs, Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians.

Italy
Avanti Italia! - The young nation of Italy is one proven to be ripe with a great Patiotism and Nationalism. Regardless of their course of action, they can expect strong support from the majority of their populace.

Colonial Ambitions - Left behind in the scramble for Africa, Italy has sought to expand her influence in the continent, managing to wrest Libya and the Dodecanese from the decaying Ottoman Empire in 1912. However, this did not sate Italy's thirst for empire, and will no doubt seek further colonial gains.

Unione Sindacale Italiana - Italian Anarchist groups, most notably the Unione Sindacale Italiana, are among the most active and violent in Europe. They have caused numerous assassinations, and are bound to cause further disruptions in the future.

Serbia
Serbian Traditions - Serbia has a long history of defying her enemies, and memories of their bitter defeat at the Battle of Kosovo looms large in the national conciousness. The Serbs will fight to the last dying breath to defend their fatherland.

Battle-Hardened Military - After years of war in the Balkans, the Serbian Army has many battle-hardened veterans, some with combat experience stretching back decades.

Blood-Stained - Both as a result of the brutal 1903 May Coup, and the recent assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the Serbian Government's ties to Pan-Slavic and Serbian Nationalist Terror groups have given it a poor reputation in the international community.

Greece
Megali Idea - The Megali Idea was an irredentist aspiration, most notably promoted by Eleftherios Venizelos, sought to form a "Greece of Two Continents and Five Seas". It often had considerable support among the population of Greece, and the dreams of the Megali idea helped to propel Greece into the Great War.

Memories of Missolonghi

The National Schism

Rumania
Rumanians! Arise! - Like many of the young nations of Europe, Rumania's population is strongly and fervently patriotic. Added to this is the strong martial history of Rumania, with heroes such as Prince Vlad Tepes, and Rumania may prove an unbreakable foe.

Strategic Oil - Rumania posses vast oil fields, the fruit of which feeds to vast European war machine. Whoever controls these oil fields will have a significant strategic advantage, although it could also make Rumania a target for invasion.

An Army in Shambles - The Rumanian army has somewhat degraded since the Balkan Wars, and it's organizational and logistical capabilities in 1914 are very poor. If Rumania wishes to see long term success, she will need to launch an effective reorganization of her armies.

Bulgaria
The Balkan Prussia - Inspired by the successful reunification of Bulgaria and the military victories against Serbia in 1885, Bulgaria has come to adopt an overtly militaristic foreign policy, reflected by the rapid expansion and development of the Bulgarian Army into a large, well-trained and well-equipped army, amongst the most powerful in the Balkans. Although defeat in the Second Balkans War brought a temporary end to Bulgaria's grand design, the setbacks in the war have only fuelled a very strong revanchist sentiment among Bulgarians, while the modernisation and build-up of the military has continued unabated.

Modern Education - Bulgaria's education system is extensive and comprehensive, with numerous schools established in the major urban centres as well as rural villages catering to both boys and girls. The result is an educated and literate populace.

Peasantry - Despite considerable economic growth and development, Bulgaria's population still comprises a considerable number of agrarian peasants as tracts of the country remain underdeveloped. The peasants in turn are mainly devout yet superstitious people, with peasant families often refusing to allow their children to attend school, thereby blunting the effectiveness of Bulgaria's socio-economic policies.

Belgium
Carved from Stone - Belgium has invested in some impressive defensive works. The city of Luik is fortified with fortifications that can be seen as impregnable. It will take hard will and a military genius to crack this mighty nut.

Albert I - Say what you will of any monarchy, but Belgium has a monarch the world can envy. Albert I is a valiant soldier, and will not give up his nation until the very dirt has been dug out from under it.

Little Icarus - Belgium has flown too close to the sun. Her strategic position makes her an ideal target for passing armies, and the little nation can only hope to stand with help from her allies. Fate has not been kind to Belgium.

Japan
Meiji's Reforms - With the restoration of imperial rule under the Emperor Meiji, Japan has been able to assume her rightful place amongst the Great Powers of the world by embarking on a course rapid industrialisation and the modernisation of the military, thus creating a self-confident, prosperous and united Empire relatively free of the dissensions and troubles that plague some of her European counterparts.

Bushido - Bushido, also known as the Way of the Warrior, is meant to instil in all Japanese soldiers and officers the concepts of frugality, loyalty to the Emperor and the Empire, mastery of martial arts, and honour to the death. Japanese soldiers, in accordance with Bushido, are expected to fight fiercely and doggedly to the end, even at the expense of their own lives.

Outsiders - It is all well and good that Japan has managed to civilise herself with the help of Western ideas and technology. However, as the Japanese are of the yellow race, this makes them suspect in the eyes of the other Great Powers, who fear the implications of a powerful East Asiatic country and will remain hesitant in supporting Japan in her endeavours in Asia. Likewise, the White Man with his strange customs cannot be allowed to pollute Japanese cultural norms. This climate of mutual xenophobia and distrust will make it more difficult for Japan to acquire allies amongst the international community.

China
All under the Heavens - China is extremely rich in both agricultural products and populace. Having access to their markets will grant basically unlimited goods and economic output to any ally, as well as providing the manpower to field a huge army.

Rule 1 - China is too big, and has no clearly defined objectives. Starting a military campaign in China, apart from some of the coastal areas, is suicide and homicide. An invasion of China should only be contrived if there is no other alternative.

Warring States - The divisions inside the republic are great and plentiful. Monarchists, republicans, communists and various other groups vie for power in the central government, and this infighting has led to a devolution of power among various local warlords.

Finland
Sisu - The land known as Suomi in its native tongue has been in the hands of foreign powers since Medieval times. First ruled by Sweden and then Imperial Russia, the Finns were blessed enough to maintain a relatively strong amount of autonomy over themselves throughout the years. Thus, instead of seeing themselves as part of either the Swedish or Russian empires, they saw themselves as Finns. This sense of nationalism has only been empowered after a failed attempt of Russification was made by the Czar. Finland is prepared to take control of their own destiny and will be willing to die in order to see their dreams come true.

Winter's Cold Hand - Life is hard in the far North, and only the toughest of people can continue to persevere through the harsh weather conditions that are prevalent throughout the region. The people have become accustomed to it, and know how to survive even the coldest of winter nights. Even Russian troops would find Finland's temperatures inhospitable, and thus any offensive mounted against the region would have a very limited time frame to try and take the region before the cold temperatures kick in.

A People Divided - Even though most Finns wish for Finland to gain its independence, such an event would likely spell disaster for the region. Some argue for a monarchy while others argue for a Republic. Some wish to cut ties completely with their neighbors while others wish to become closer with the politics that happen outside their border. There are even whispers of a movement known as Communism that works into the hearts and minds of the lower class. Should Finland gain its independence, civil war would be inevitable.

New Zealand
Britain of the South - The climate of New Zealand is much like that of it's motherland and it's people consist primarily of second and third generation settlers from the British Isles. New Zealand enjoys access to the cultural and technological innovations of the United Kingdom and the greater Commonwealth. Secondly, the great loyalty the population of New Zealand feels towards it's Motherland means that the population will fervently support New Zealand playing a role in Britain's wars.

A Land of Milk and Honey - New Zealand is an agricultural paradise, producing an abundance of wool, milk, cheese, beef, and a number of other goods. New Zealand produces more than enough food to feed itself while shipping overseas what food can survive the great journey. New Zealand is under no danger of famine or starvation.

Distance Looks Our Way - New Zealand's nearest neighbor, Australia, is 2,011 kilometers or 1,250 miles away at the closest point. To Britain, the distance is nine times that. New Zealand will have to go to greater lengths than most others to take part in trade, or to involve themselves in a great war.

Afghanistan
Where Empires come to Die - Afghanistan is mountainous, her people are stubborn and patriotic, and well-armed to boot. Invading Afghanistan has only been successfully achieved by the Mongols, and every empire before or after has broken her teeth on this little nation in Central Asia. Approach with caution.

Where poppies grow - The mountainous state boasts an impressive production of opium, which can be used to manufacture all kinds of medicine and products. It alse makes for a very lucrative trade good, and owning the poppy production in Afghanistan goes a long way in paying for a nation's war debt.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place - The Great Game, played between Russia and Britain in Central Asia, has taken her toll on the proud Afghan people. In fear of foreign influence, the British have launched multiple invasions of the nation to re-establish their own dominance. These wars and their following instability has led to a lot of violence within the nation.

Portugal
Albania
Skanderbeg's Legacy - While the population do not necessarily agree on the specifics, it is the aspiration of all Albanians that their nation be free and independent. The population will strongly support any actions to defend Albanian sovereignty, and in fact are likely to take up arms of their own accord to fight any invading or occupying force.

Blessed Earth - Albania is notably mineral-wealthy, containing significant deposits of iron, coal, copper, nickel, bauxite, chromite and more. Should Albania be able to secure it's borders and begin actually prospecting and extracting, it shall not be in want for raw industrial materials for a long time.

Total Anarchy - Albania is under severe threat of total collapse. With Greek, Serbian/Montenegrin, Italian and Austrian influences trying to grab their shares of Albania, a number of separate civil revolts against the government and no support set to arrive from any direction, Prince William's throne sits on a house of cards.

1. Yes, you can reserve Nations.

2. I'd rather people not launch coups against themselves, and I had planned to make the Communists playable if and when we reach the point of collapse for the Russian Empire.

Eh... I have mixed feelings on this. This is a good app, and I know that you are an excellent RPer. However, I wasn't planning to add the Bolshies into the game until they actually have something to do. Russia isn't exactly in a situation for revolution at the moment, and I wouldn't want to see you left with nothing to do.

This is OTL Russia, right?

It has been ripe for revolution since the 1890s... there's a reason 1905 happened, after all. Now with war coming, it might actually be important to have a bolshevik party spread class consciousness and whatnot.

Besides, the Russian Revolution was really just the Bolsheviks storming the Winter Palace, anyway.

I just really don't want it to happen yet. The current focus is World War One. I wouldn't mind including the Russian Civil War eventually, just not yet.

Reserve Germany.
Krenzianism is a belief which workers are placed in their talented jobs to do the workforce strong. It also ruled by a Monarch (Or the Emperor) The Emperor can also be voted to be overthrown if too Power abusive. The Capital is led by Capitalmen or the leaders of ministries. (More like Senators)
