Is your Nation considering itself to be Democratic?

Postby Dushan » Sat Nov 05, 2016 4:09 pm

During the early 21th Century it had become a widespread practice among the nations of the Earth to call itself in the one or other way Democratic and Organize their written constitutions based upon principles originating in what has been called the western world. Indeed, regardless of the actual political situation and ruling form of governance during this era most nations did consider themself to be a democracy or at least in theory based onto the concept of representative democracy, which was then seen and regarded as the best form of government.

So the question here is whether or not your nation considers itself a Democracy or at least based onto democratic principles. Regardless whether or not it is actually a "Democray" such as Democratic People's Republic of Korea for example.

The Principality of Dushan considers itself to be a Monarchy and rejects democracy as a form of "Tyranny by Majority", a dangerous and volatile form of "mob-rule" and populism. However Dushan itself has some argueably representative elements and even elections, not without Populist elements either. This showcases the disparity between the stated and actual political situation.

The League of the Six Free Peoples considers itself to be a modern, Liberal Free Market Democracy. The constitution protects a myriad of human rights, provides for free and fair elections, and reflects pragmatic neoliberal values in the economic sphere. The neckbeard cartel of La Cosa Fedora is rarely mentioned in the constitution, mostly just in the preamble.

In practice, La Cosa Fedora is the true ruler. The State, as well as private sector, religious, and civil society organizations are infiltrated and controlled by LCF to varying degrees. La Cosa Fedora uses force and surveillance both on behalf of and contrary to the stated aims of the State. LCF has a larger and more advanced military than the State, maintains its own prisons, labor camps, human experimentation laboratories, schools, and hospitals. It even controls the civil service to such an extent that elections are always rigged unless both candidates are fine for LCF.

Naturally, this is veiled in strict secrecy. Everyone knows that LCF exists. Some people believe it only performs the limited set of roles and duties laid out for it in the constitution. Many people know that it does more, and suspect it of corruption. However, only a few guess the true extent of LCF powers. Those few are carefully monitored and made to look like conspiracy theorists.

Thus, claiming that the League of the Six Free Peoples is not democratic is not within polite conversation, and doing so will significantly hurt your career, and can even get you into unfortunate accidents or serving jail time for an unrelated crime.
Ask us anything!

Our state, the League of the Six Free Peoples, is actually controlled by a cartel of neckbeards known as La Cosa Fedora. Members of the cartel are known as Honorable Gentlesirs. Citizens who are not members are known as normies.

Our armed forces are armies of the radicalized romanceless.

Do you fear us yet? If not, have some anti-neckbeard propaganda!

The government of Valgora is a unique form of a unitary parliamentary republic. While the government is a unitary government, local and regional governments are given much more power than a normal unitary system does. Also, even though it's a republic (representative democracy), direct democracy is extremely important resulting in many referendums and similar things. While the local and regional governments are more influenced by direct democracy, the national government is still easily affected by direct democracy. This unique way of government has lead to Valgora's government being called a communist democracy.

No, we are not and do not consider ourselves to be democratic.

The President of the Bathuul Cartel is also the Lord of Bathuul, leading both our corporate and our sovereign sides. The President appoints their own successor, traditionally appointing one of the Department Directors, in a manner closest in nature to the adopted Five Good Emperors of the Roman Empire if a government equivalent is wanted. This allows for the uninterrupted continuance of long-term policies, whereas a democratic system would see long-term policies neglected due to the constant shifting of public opinion and factional infighting. A quasi-democratic option is the backup: Should the President die without a designated successor, the Department Directors will elect one from amongst their own ranks. It is still more of an elective oligarchy than a true democracy.

The Department Directors also appoint their own successors, from amongst the Vice Directors, and so it continues down the hierarchy.

Exxosia is a polyanarchy. So it is a sort of direct democracy with a legum checks and balance system and an absolute entirety vote needed to pass anything, but day to day life is a basic group voluntarism form of anarchy applied to sub-national units solely for the description of the bounds for laws.

More democratic then most nations on the continent.
We are a constitutional monarchy with a 2 chamber parliament and free elections. So the current government is probably the most democratic one in the last 100 years.

Yes and no. There are elections couple years for a district's representation in the Netorarian Parliament, but the leader of the country is chosen by the Bare Goddess. Ultimately, her will is the law, which is interpreted by the Selected (her chosen person to be head of the government) and parliament to be made into actual laws for governing. The day to day governance is determined by parliament and local officials for local offices.

The United Colonies of Earth is not entirely democratic. It includes some elements of it, such as Congress and the fact that Mandated Divisions can elect their leaders.
It's somewhat oligarchic in nature.
The United Colonies of Earth exists:
to bring about the settlement of all planets not yet inhabited by a sapient species within this Galaxy and Universe by the Human Race, or all members of the species Homo sapiens;
to ensure the observation and protection of the rights of all human beings;
to defend humankind from invasion, catastrophe, fraud and violence;
to represent the interests of humankind to the other governments of the Galaxy;
to facilitate the perpetuation of the unity of human civilization and infrastructure between otherwise self-governing colonies;
and to promote technological advancement and scientific discovery for the perpetuation and expansion of the unity and empowerment of all human beings.

It is a bit odd how Chadtonia became a democracy with so much history of Chadtonia being an Empire ruled primarily by a single male monarch for thousands of years. Chadtonia's last few Emperors each desired that the populace be given freedom in electing representatives to represent the Citizens of each of the territories, regions, provinces etc, so Chadtonia's Parliament became a body of elected persons, rather than a governing body of persons selected solely by the Emperor. However, the final Parliament body was much distrusted by the populace, so this in turn led to the Parliament itself to contrive a system in which they might be able to garner trust by the populace, so they decided that the Parliament itself, as an elected body should become the Nation's Head of State and Head of Government. However, the role of the Emperor was still oddly questionable. If the Parliament was the Head of State, do we still retain an Emperor? If So, how much freedom does the Emperor have to mandate law outside of the Parliemen'ts (now the Federal Council's) permission.

While Chadtonia is still sorting out exactly what democracy means for Chadtonia, Chadtonia is learning how to adapt to legal changes more in line with the overall populace's views. This transition has not been an easy transition, with the third and youngest president of Chadtonia being murdered by the Minster of Defense under the authority and direction of the individual who would become Chadtonia's fourth President. Term limits were eventually established for the President, but there is still lot of work on what specifically needs to be done with outdated Empirical laws. Under the guidance of President Sheila Abernathy, the Federal Council now has a better understanding of how to interpret Empirical Law according to the modern context. This does not necessary negate out-dated laws as law, in so much that it aids the Federal Council in how to amend the law according to contemporary world-views by the mainstream citizenry.

While elements of democracy are quite common in the Imperial government system, the Imperium has never considered itself to be a democracy nor made any pretenses of being one. The Imperium's government system is and always will be a hybrid system of elective monarchy and stratocracy.

We don't officially consider ourselves a democracy within any constitution - probably because of the fact we don't have one.

But yeah, we're a democracy - system of government holds that up.

Well, we are an elective monarchy, so we are kinda democratic in choosing a leader even if the leader is only chosen by other monarchs. However, we hold a lot of referendums for the people to decide on certain issues and we mostly follow their public opinion on why we should select that option. So the government is kinda democratic.

Also, we allow freedom of press, speech, expression, religion, and culture, so we are generous in giving our citizens political rights, partly because we care and partly because we have no law enforcement and it is extremely hard to stop them from doing whatever they please. We also don't have any real censorship except so there you go.

In conclusion, we are very democratic indeed.
