In what ways do you buck political stereotypes?

Postby Ashlak » Tue Sep 27, 2016 8:27 am

Basically, are there any positions that you hold that are not typical for your political orientation.

For example, are you a right-libertarian that supports single payer healthcare? Are you a conservative who is fine with LGBT rights?

I'll give mine: I'm a left leaning liberal who supports gun rights.

Other ways in which you don't fit with political stereotypes are also welcome. (ex: liberal democrat who likes nascar, conservative republican who likes soccer, etc.)

Right libertarian that supports funding NASA.

Only government program I like.

Don't know or even care in particular. I probably fit the stereotype. I'm anti-work, but that would only break a stereotype if I was a liberal, capitalist or nationalist at the same time or something else that would circle around working.

I'm a socialist who supports a strong Church presence in society. Or, better yet, I'm a social traditionalist who supports a socialist state.

Hmm...

I'm a white American man without a college degree who thinks Trump can go fuck himself.

I'm a liberal who, while not opposed to abortion rights, has a strong personal dislike for abortion.

I'm a Democratic Socialist (considering that one of the biggest stereotypes in America, unfortunately, is to equate socialism with dictatorship, Marxism, communism, and even Nazism, I'd say that counts).
"Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

Does Not Compute.

Sorry, but I really do not see how one can be consistently egalitarian and progressive, and anti-immigration.

So paleocon?

Paleocon is a lot more complicated than neocon but anti-interventionist, and not really all that applicable to non-US contexts(Kauth is Scottish).
Broadly speaking, neocons tend to be internationalists with liberal ideas on human rights, typically highly in favor of neoliberal economics, and usually in favor of centralization. Most of them are philosophically classical liberals.
Paleocons are highly regionalist, with a much more restrictive view on human rights, and usually have economic views that are not neoliberal- mercantilism with some sort of soft producerism mixed in is extremely common, although some really extreme ones are anti-capitalists. They're philosophically moderate versions of old-school conservatives- very similar to high tories. Paleocons also, almost without exception, prioritize the big three social issues(abortion, LGBT, in the US guns) over almost everything else.
