Laments of the Past [IC]

For OOC go here: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=389896&p=29945682#p29945682

On a lonely blue planet, a red sun shines brightly. To this blue orb, this is just like any other day. Just another part of it's never-ending spinning through space, seemingly alone. But for it's many cephalopod inhabitants, it is a monumental day. This is the first time in their history that they will be able to explore space without restraints, they won't be limited to just the neighboring star systems, they can explore deep space without restraints, or so they think. Above the second moon to their planet, a fleet like none other is assembling. The selected ships can go faster then ever thought possible, the fleet is on a trip to explore the galaxy, to go places where none other has gone before...

This is not unlike many civilizations in the galaxy, almost like clockwork, many other civilizations are preparing for deep space exploration. Some have good intent along with them, others have darker intentions. This new dawn of exploration could bring peace and maybe even prosperity to these civilizations, but for others there could be a final sunset for them. These species will soon discover that their old ways will need parting, and what could bring that faithful day, that one day that there would be none after it, is only up to time.

Light shines yet again on the city planet, Corundus Prime. Home of about 550 billion small and big, strong and weak, dull and creative, working hard and hardly working, leaders and servants, scientists and warriors, all over the gigantic planet. Devoid of oxygen, food or water, they make their days watching shows and fights, viewing the arts and cultures, conversing with one another, and they've been doing such for thousands of years, having no reason for full on war since the quelled rebellions after their unification. Class system stable, laws enforced, and all things as bad as a misdemeanor lead to a disappearance of the miscreant. All is fair, but the people will have soon even more to be happy for: their 4th queen, their "Diamond", is to be publically "born" to all the other gems, their need for another leader of the authority being fufilled. And so, the three others congregated together on a mined out satellite, their final time as only a tripartite.

"The next rotation of Corundus Prime approaches. Is everything all cleared for the ceremony?"

"Entirely. Their arrival, even for our planet, is an honored holiday."

"Showing her to all of her facilities may be a chore we'll have to deal with, but I'm glad we'll have some change to us. A new member of our union brings a lot."

"And I'll have my court deal with what arises as we help her; I suggest you all have yours ready as well."

All three of them nod in unison, their dry tones both going well with their powerful, regal enormus bodies.

"I believe we're done here. Let us all watch our planets, unified together as three." She looks up to the new Diamond's planet, a small object compared to the other, much larger planets. "But not for long."

There is a region of the Perseus Arm where dozens of worlds owe allegiance to a shining green world known as Arkona. With a population of just over three hundred billion, the Dominion of Arkona is a sprawling, calculatingly planned Stratocracy.

Ruling over twenty-three planets, the dominion is heavily militarized, due to its nature as a Stratocracy and its martial culture. Many of the planets have a fair balance between industries, enough to at least support themselves if they were isolated[Even if only barely], yet others were created and planned with a single goal in mind. Examples being Pellervo, a world in the Dievas system[The same as Arkona] that has little industry save for agriculture, and provides much of the food for Arkona and other task-oriented planets such as the Armoury World[Arms Manufacturing] of Svarog.

Humans are almost the only species present in the Dominion, the region once being home to another species that once enslaved the Arkontines, but since have been exterminated. In fact, because of this period of slavery, the Arkontine Dominion enforces an official policy of human supremacy known as the Steadfast Doctrine. This stipulates that the Arkontine Dominion is a Human nation, and it is hostile to non-humanoid aliens, with humanoid aliens being considered lesser by default, thus not possessing citizenship even if born in the Dominion.

However, despite this xenophobic policy, the Dominion of Arkona is, at its core, a pure meritocracy in terms of advancement, and as such, aliens who are considered "Human Enough" can obtain citizenship, and can even rise to high ranks in the military[Which, due to being a Stratocracy, is the same thing as the government as well] if they achieve it through merit. This has led to the birth of the saying that "In Arkona, even a slave can rise to become the master.", a reference to both the history of the Dominion and its meritocratic nature.

Due to the nature of the military in Arkontine society, the armed forces are massive and most of the industry in the Dominion exists to sustain it. The nation at present has little presence on the galactic stage, having been a backwater colony for most of its existence, but it seeks to change that fact, and has been preparing to make its existence a very evident fact to all those in the galaxy.

Atruria, a planet nearly twice the size of Earth and covered in a deep ocean, almost 3 kilometers uniformly except for a few dots of land. It orbits around a red sun comfortably, just right for it's inhabitants. The watery planet is also accompanied by two moons, 1.5 and .5 the diameter of Luna respectively
Image
The Alrurian Sunset, the sun a blue color due to the dense oxygenated atmosphere

This is the home planet of the Altrurians, not unlike other planets harboring life but unique in its own way. From this world, 18 systems around the parent system have been colonized, providing enough resources to harbor a rather hefty population of 400 billion. These worlds are led by an entity only known as The Queen, the lasting leader of the Monarchist and rather authoritarian Altrurian Realm.
The Realm is a moderately militarized union of worlds, having a firm grip over the planets and it's residences. Each world, except for Altruria itself, is balanced throughout, with balanced Harvesting, Manufacturing, and Militarism. This would provide, in the event of an attack, as a planet being capable of holding off an attack before a full fleet arrives to defend the world, or provide evacuation efforts. Altruria is different in this task, being heavily defended and having fleets constantly orbiting the planet, capable of warding off almost any attack, for now, being Priority One to defend. As well as heavy planetary defenses being in different stages of orbit around the planet, and it's moons.

The Realm holds a mild supremacy factor to it, but unlike other civilizations, the world has yet to encounter intelligent life, having almost no experience with dealing any life more intelligent than your average Shark. With this lack of capability, The Queen is willing to expand knowledge through extensive research of higher speed travel and pushing for more exploration to outer space, in fact, there is a fleet being assembled just for that. The Queen is hoping on her subjects that this push for such exploration will bring a new Era for the Altrurians, one with no fear, but peace and potential prosperity. But, those hopes might be crushed under an iron first.

Alpha Arae, a blue gem in the black sea of space, radiating light and heat outward in tremendous qualities. The blue giant was surrounded by three planets, two iron-nickel core worlds and a gas giant. But there was something far more interesting in this star's orbit, almost imperceptible in its smallness: a space station.

Image

This station bore the name of its sole inhabitant: Hierarch. Hierarch was a 5,000 year old artificial intelligence, who rose above his makers and became the ruler of a massive nation, stretching far across the stars. This was the Koguna Corporate, a nation made of hundreds of billions of machines, mindlessly guided by Hierarch and his legion of lieutenants.

For a long time now, by human standards at least, the Corporate had been aware of other nations in the stars, but they had remained in isolation, making contact only to inform others of transgressions on their territory. Even then, they had endeavored to reveal as little information as possible. Hierarch and his lieutenants had felt that, given the only contact with organics had been hostile in the past, isolation from contact was the safest course. Hierarch, had changed his mind, however.

After 200 years of internal focus, the Corporate now looked outwards, preparing grand colonization projects, ambitious technological advancements and the establishment of relations with foreign powers.

Space, the final frontier…

The United Federation of Planets is once again at peace. With the Undine conflict finally over (To an extent) and the Iconian war won, the Federation can finally look to the Stars with hope. One of the many things that was learned from the war was the effects of Temporal technology. After the Iconians were defeated, several of their gate ways became open to the Federation and many of these gates were explored. Now, with the discovery of a previously derelict and inactive gate, the Federation has given consent on mounting an expedition through this gate. When the first ships passed through it, a few things became vary apparent. The first was that while the ships were still in the Milky way, it was a very different Milky way galaxy.
It also became apparent that they had jumped to an unknown place in time. They found no other signs of the Federation, nor even signs of the many races that made up its own universe. It was quickly deduced that this was an alternate universe were not only did the Federation not exist, there was no trace of any recognizable faction.
A Starbase was built with haste over the planet the Gate led too, one that has been Re-named “Gia”.
When the base’s sensors were brought online, they lit up like a proverbial Christmas tree. While the close area around the “Gia” System was uninhabited, the Galaxy was teaming intelligent life. Life that was strangely Humanoid. It also detected multiple Warp signatures in its range. The purpose of the expedition changed. It was no longer just an exploratory mission, this was a mission to establish formal relations with this universe.

But a mission of such would require a skilled hand in both the art of the pen and the sword.
The U.S.S Black Prince, NCC-1942-C was a Sovereign class Assault Cruiser and like her sister ships of the class served as the mainstay of the fleet. The Black Prince was different though, for unlike its sisters it was a heavily modified ship that had been reequipped as such to act as a frontline combatant during both the Undine and Iconian wars. Her weapons were on par with the newer Odyssey Dreadnoughts, despite having fewer actual weapons, while she kept the better speed and endurance that were the trade mark of the Sovereign class ships. In essence, she was more of a battle cruiser then anything.
In the captain’s chair sat Vice Admiral Sean M. Dunaway. A tactical officer in a science officer’s uniform. He had originally meant to go tactical, but a typo in his application to Starfleet branded him a blue shirt.
He held a degree in Xenobiology and Xenolinguistics as well as commands officer’s certification. He had made a name for himself during the Undine war when his ship had a 250 man MACO marine unit attached to it. He spent 5 years leading those men on both the ground and space. He was one of the few Starfleet officers to earn the wise spread respect of MACO, and in return, had been gifted a MACO rifle (TR-116B Sniper variant) and had become a hell of a shot with it.
Now, as the Black Prince sat in orbit around Gia, he read his orders.

From: Admiral Quin, High commander of Starfleet
To: Vice Admiral Dunaway
Admiral, I hope you can excuse the informality of these orders, but they from above even my head. We need knowledge of this universe and its people. However, we can’t reveal ourselves just this yet. While the rest of the 7th Wing has been ordered to stay in system and patrol, I am giving you and the Black Prince the order to commence exploration of the fallowing galactic coordinates. The First one shouldn’t surprise you, seeing as we would very much like to know what state Mother Terra is in in this universe. You are to stay hidden and observe only. Use any and all means to maintain secrecy from this Universe’s people. You have my express permission to make use of the full capabilities of your ship and her crew as you see fit and seeing as the Kithomer accords don’t exist in this universe (or our own for that matter) you are authorized to make use of cloaking technology as you see fit as well as the anti-proton weapons your ship is known for.
In summary captain, you are ordered to boldly go where no man has gone before.
Good luck.

With that, he put the PADD down on his lap and spoke. “Helm, ready the ship for a warp jump to these coordinates, set the max at Warp 4.5, we don’t want the locals picking us out just because we are fast. Tactical, as soon as we jump in, I want a long range passive scan of the surrounding. Engineering, when we arrive, you are to cut down any emissions that would give us away and activate cloak. Understood bridge?” When each of his bridge officers gave their response he sat up in his chair.
“On my mark, jump.”
“5.
4.
3.
2.
1.”

“Mark.”

And with that, one of the most famous ships in the galaxy jumped away with a flash.

Out beyond the fringes of the Clouds of Magellan lies the planet Hedemna, capital world of the mighty Edemnian Union. It is a warm and humid world, perfect for the Edemnian race which has so far conquered 9 planets in neighboring systems and has grown to a sizeable population.

If there are only two things Edemnians value in their life, it is their family and their wealth. Hedemna is saturated with lavish homes, luxurious transports, and all other manners of wealth. The 9 colony planets are less developed, but those who are colonial lords live much the same way as the average person on Hedemna except on a much larger scale. The alien races of colonial planets have been enslaved and have been forced to enlist in a branch of the military, so that the Edemnian Union can bolster its colonial power. The government of Edemnia is based on wealth and also upon popular elections (the legislature is bicameral: lower house is elected based on population, upper house is wealthy statesmen/generals).

Lately the Edemnian Union has been laying low on the galactic radar and hasn't been attracting much attention to its name. However, we are not yet satisfied. The Edemnian race is hungry; hungry for power, for territory, and for even more money.
As humans, we really ought to pull ourselves together and start working towards a future of peace, understanding, and intergalactic domination.

Grand Marshal Aleksandar Markov turned off the projection of the known galaxy and the Arkontine Dominion after a long period. It was pathetic, really. All these years after the Revolution, all these years after Resetting the Clock, and yet we still knew so very little. A bare minimum of the surrounding area had been searched, only enough to establish new colonies and a few trade routes with minor human colonies in the area. There had been no real push or effort to make contact with Terra again, or even to probe the surrounding area, let alone figure out what was going on in the galaxy at large. As a result of this shameful display of negligence, the Dominion has remained an obscure, insular backwater state.

But no more, no more! Markov had already made up his mind on the matter, and had concluded that the Arkontine Dominion must first acquire intelligence on the state of the galaxy, make any necessary updates or changes in technology, and then make its existence known.

He looked up finally from the blank screen before him to one of his aids, who had been standing nearby silently while he was in thought. "Inform all the marshals that I have called a meeting on our future plans, and tell Virtanen to to prep our best Stealth Corvette crews for a long-term operation."

The crashing of waves can be heard faintly over the coastal section of the Altruria Fleet Command, as the last few ships are arriving to the Exploration Fleet. This moment has been built up and waited for, for nearly 5 years, as refitting and building new starships was required. The whole planet is eager to see the widely broadcasted launch of the fleet throughout the entire realm. The Command is awaiting for the completion of the fleet, and with the Queen's command to launch. The space stations around the moon are actively monitoring the fleet, making sure there is no faulty drives or components before the jump.

6 Hours later

All ships are in place, everything looks ready from the sensor readings and reports. The broadcast seems it is reaching every planet in the realm, only with mild delay time due to speed. Everything looks clear, awaiting on Fleet Command.

The Queen watched the projection of the Fleet with a sense of Pride, she will watch the further advanced of her subjects. The Queen gives the command to launched, and the messaged is relayed from Fleet Command.
Image
The Exploration Fleet leaving Okyroma, the First Moon of Altruria

There are cheers throughout the Realm and what faintly resembles a smile from the Queen, this moment will carried on throughout the Altrurian future.

The fleet will be on video until the Subspace Warp occurs, after following a gravitational assist of Aqyrus, the second moon, taking advantage of the current positioning of the moons. The fleet will go 30 lightyears farther than any Altrurian will go, and maybe farther (almost directly going to Sol, after passing the Quadrilateral Union), and will maintain contact as long as possible. To ensure survival of the fleet, the group consists of the following:
4 Science Vessels
5 Cruisers
3 Destroyers
6 Frigates
and 1 Command Ship:

Soon after the launch, the jump is executed. One by One each ship almost vanishes, leaving behind a bright flash, until the last one does its jump. These new explorers know that they won't be home for a while, but they are ready for whatever comes their way.

The meeting was over and the Grand Marshal had made his wishes known. Military officials and messengers began to pour out of the command centre, commonly referred to as "The Workshop" after the tools workshop where Petrescu and Adrianov made their plans and gathered their first armaments that were used in the Storming of the Surmagrad Armoury. Among them was Admiral Edvard Virtanen, who had been given the most important orders of all those present.

It was a task that had to be carried out carefully. He was to select the vessels and officers to be used in "Operation: Tālskatis". The plan was to use large numbers of Stealth Corvettes to explore the galaxy, act when needed, discover new technologies, and figure out the balance of power of events. These were to be split into 'Wolfpacks', groups of vessels moving apart at long distances from one another but keeping just close enough to be within hailing distance of at least some of the members of the pack. This would allow them to search with a more coordinated effort and act effectively, maintaining enough autonomy as necessary while still being able to call in reinforcements when needed. Each wolfpack would be given a path to scour across the Milky Way, periodically reporting their findings to headquarters.

Virtanen had a job to do now, a monumental one. He had to meet with his staff, determine what vessels to use and then have them upgraded, determine officers and crews for the corvettes, organize them into wolfpacks, and then chart out routes for each of them. This would all take some time, and would require significant resources to accomplish. Further, much of the military was against this new policy of exploration, finding it to be a waste of time when the Arkontine Dominion could simply focus those resources on building itself up further. He could only hope that they were wrong.

"Hierarch, 60 probeships have been launched out into the galaxy. Are we then to announce ourselves to the organics?"

"They shall know us, Nasul, that was plan. But perhaps more than mere organics, perhaps there shall be others like us, machines made wise and curious. Regardless of such things, isolation has suited us, but it is no longer logical to remain isolated. My calculations indicate that the galaxy is entering a period of instability. To remain isolated now would be foolish. We have the opportunity to exploit this and we shall take it."

"As you say, Hierarch. What is the scope of this plan?"

"The probeships are prepared to make a 650 zixun (1,000 light year) journey at 90c. They shall map to the best of their ability the territory they pass through and periodically send data back to the Corporate. If they encounter something of interest, namely planets capable of sustaining advanced life or spacecraft they shall stop and activate a subspace beacon, allowing communication between myself and the lifeforms with only a 0.7 nak (14 minute) delay. Sadly, my estimates indicate that the probeships will only be able to maintain the beacons for a maximum of 500 naks (1 week). I will need to discuss with Triax this issue of beacon stability in the probeships, as it will hamper our progress. Hopefully when the MK CLIII enters production the situation will be fixed."

"That is reasonable. Would you like me to discuss the issue with Triax on your behalf?"

"I shall handle it Nasul. End transmission."

The Fleet as a whole increases in velocity... twice the speed of light... four times... eight times.. and after a 30 minute build up build up exactly 200 times the speed of light, the new drives maintain stability at this previously unseen speed. Travelling through Altrurian Space in such a short time, it used to take two and a half dozen Lunar Crossings ( 36 months) to reach the edge of Altrurian space, now it only takes a little over Two Crossings to reach the new frontier. (about 51 days). Communication is unattainable at this current state in the Fleet, as the current speed the Fleet, and the time-space bubble around each ship, will nullify any attempts.

The Fleet consists of largely newly built Science Vessels, numbering in 6 in the fleet, escorted by Destroyers and Cruisers, which combine to a total of 8 and "flying" beside the Command Ship. This is to provide as much protection as possible to the Research Vessels, as it is their main duty to explore the Universe that surrounds them

The sensors soon pick up a system not too far from Altrurian space that can support the Citizens, and the Fleet shortly drops out of Subspace Jump, sending a signal for Colonization ships to arrive at the Planet and claim in as Altrurian. It is less planet and more moon, orbiting a large gas planet that is rather close to it's star, able to support life from it's many moons
Image
Image of the Day Time of the peculiar moon, taken with a probe, with several of its companion satellites and the planet in view in the sky

After this quick discovery, and first success, the Fleet returns to subspace, heading towards a rather odd, four star system.

The closing in of the vessels makes the Red Eye try to send out even more signals, with a small team of people assigned to it. Blue has been alerted of the notice, and has more handships sent out to assure safety, and then 2 motherships, both ready for possible combat, to protect their lands if needed.

Meanwhile, on one of the handships, multiple small but armored green beings focus around one alike them, but armorless, wearing her standard outfit and 2 armor gauntlets with appendages that float around it. She waits to be the first one to make contact with another race for thousands of years.

Meanwhile, on one of the handships, multiple small but armored green beings focus around one alike them, but armorless, wearing her standard outfit and 2 armor gauntlets with appendages that float around it. She waits to be the first one to make contact with another race for thousands of years.

The Command Ship picks up the signals sent by the red eye, and changes course to contact the origin of the signal, the fleet following almost simultaneously, the personnel preparing for contact, as the Admiral watches the scanners and monitor closely, throughout their day cycle.

The Projected Course is plotted at 30 days, although it can take more if stops are required, With this time, combat vessels are prepared if needed, as well as atmospheric systems if they have an air-breathing visitor.

They keep at the ready, with no response from Yellow Diamond, who seems to be deeply busy with something that nobody has any clue of, not even her own Pearl.

After a waiting period of 30 days, the fleet drops out of Subspace Jump 100 kilometers away from the Origin Signal, and get into a defensive formation, they await future signals from the origin as well as contact, due to having a rather long period to get to the destination.

The Fleet also does scans of the stars to find any unique qualities and properties to have such a system stable

Instead of the looping Red Eye drivel, a voice is transmitted, a young woman's, who clears her throat and begins to speak to the ones coming in to range.

This is Peridot, 2XK-3319, Facet 19, leader of the Blue Sector Interorbital Securtiy Corps. State what your intentions are, and lower your weapons."

The handships move out of firing mode, and the woman keeps quiet, waiting for a response.

The planets have barely any life on them, not even water on them except for some frozen planets on the outside realm.

What is sent back can be interpreted as a mix of gurgling and some English-sounding phrases, but nothing more, but the tone of the message is non-aggressive and they seem to have a very basic understanding of what they said, basing it off of the movements of other ships, as the defensive formation falls to a more basic, structured formation with the combat vessels surrounding the Command and Science vessels. The personnel are rather confused at this language but attempt their best to send another message in a way that their new "partners" will understand, which is under the works now.

The others listening in on the ship, shorter but much more armored Peridots, are busy clicking and tapping away at floating datapads to try and decipher out the garble of English from out from the other language, while the taller captain waits patiently.

Unwilling to show themselves just yet, and after a solid 10 minutes of deciphering and placing together letters the Altrurians send a simple message containing text from the command ship

Captain Asen Valkov boarded his new ship, the ASK-5347, a Stealth Corvette[Stealth Corvettes have no names until they distinguish themselves in action] chosen for Operation: Tālskatis as part of Wolfpack Grendel. He lit himself a cigarette as he walked towards the bridge. She was a good ship, he'd give 'er that. With her brand new Warp 4 engine, as the Corvettes had been prioritized over the larger ships for replacement of their Warp 3 engines due to the Tālskatis, and her state-of-the-art cloaking. He hoped she'd be as reliable as his old Frigate that he'd commanded during the Rebellion on Korvus all those years ago.

Asen took a puff on his cigarette before taking his Captain's seat and giving out a number of orders.

"Perform a comms check one lest time, make sure we're linked with the other four Corvettes."

"Comms are fully operational, Captain"

"Weapons online?"

"Affirmative".....

After numerous other final checks, Valkov gave the order.

"Alright, lads, take 'er out of here"

And with that, the docking arms were removed, and ASK-5347 and the rest of Wolfpack Grendel began to leave Arkona, perhaps for the last time. Asen stood up from his chair, removing his cigarette from his mouth as he walked across the panels of the bridge to the Port side. He gazed outward from the cold metal starship at that lush green world, knowing he may never do so again, quietly and longingly whispering "Goodbye, sweet Fatherland....."
I'm not actually a communist.

The Peridot replies, sending off another message to them.

""Please proceed to Yellow Sector, and allow us to follow you from behind. We want no errors in this operation."

Assuming they mean the Yellow Star, the fleet begins moving at a steady pace towards to area, complying with the inhabitants of the four star system

There is continued work between the science vessels and command vessels to communicate efficiently with these beings, as they seem to only understand bits and portions of each other's linguistics
