1936: Hearts of Iron
"I am become death, destroyer of worlds." - J. Robert Oppenheimer
OOC

On the 1st of September, 1939, forces of Germany marched into Poland, an ally of Great Britain and France. This even triggered the Second World War, a colossal era of combat, in which 70 million people died. It was a war for liberty, or a war for oppression, but at the end, it proved to be a war for nothing. There was no gain from the war, there was only loss. The end of the war, in 1945, lead to hostilities that could've started nuclear warfare, but all of that is in the future. Today, it is March the Seventh, 1936 AD, and German forces have just entered the Rhineland, the French of course horrified. The British government refused to go to war, and this was a win for the Reich. Adolf Hitler knew he could get away with these actions, as in their current state, the United Kingdom was not willing to assist her ally France. That wouldn't last forever though, time will tell how long it will take for a nation to stand up to Germany, if it ever happens, that is.

OOC

This is a nation roleplay set in WW2. It won't just focus on war, but trade, diplomacy and espionage. Tensions in Europe are escalating again, as Germany is becoming more and more militaristic. War is a possibility, but unlikely, as the United Kingdom is refusing to go to war with Germany. There will be a grace period of 1 year, where player controlled countries can't go to war with other player controlled countries or major countries. The first page will take us up to the 1st of January 1937, and after that each page will equal three months.

There will be a faction system, similar to HOI3/4 and EU4, where certain parties and organizations can gain influence in the government. At a certain level, these parties can revolt, though that is up to the OP or Co-Op. The Roleplay will start when all of the major nations (The UK, France, Germany, Italy, the USA, Japan and the Soviet Union) are filled. These are the only nations who will be able to "influence" factions in other nations. Sweden and Switzerland will remain neutral if they are an NPC state, though if they become player controlled someone else can take over them.

January, 1936
Moscow, Soviet Union

From the Kremlin came the orders direct from Comrade Stalin himself; Soviet policy was changing. Socialism in one country had entrenched the socialist way of life within the Soviet Union to the extent that it would likely never be rooted out by capitalist elements, but Stalin and his inner circle felt that continuing this policy would leave the Soviet Union on the sidelines of world affairs. For too long had the Soviet Union been at best a second rate power, only able to exert its influence on the fringes of the European map.

What Stalin and the Politburo envisioned was a sweeping change in foreign policy. Support for the communists parties in European nations that still had ties to Moscow was to be increased in all European nations. The subsidies to the Communist Party of Great Britain and Italy were doubled, and tripled for the French and Spanish Communist Parties. Germany was abandoned as a lost cause, with the surviving members of the KPD ordered to flee the country with all speed and to regroup in Moscow, where the Third International had other plans for them.

Closer to home, the change in foreign policy was more drastic. Orders were dispatched from Moscow for the formation of the "Baltic Peasant's and Worker's Red Army" on the borders with Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. The ostensible purpose of this formation was for the exiled revolutionaries from the Baltic States to liberate their homeland. In practicality, it would be an extension of the regular Red Army, with Baltic officers playing only a token role. For the moment, preparations were being kept secret, but the world would soon learn that the Soviet Union was amassing nine armies on the border with the Baltic states.

To support such an ambitious foreign policy, Stalin and the Politburo had decided to embark on another ambitious five year plan. Aimed mainly at the armed forces, it undertook to double the production of aircraft and artillery weapons. The production of armoured vehicles was to be expanded threefold, while outside Leningrad, Sevastopol and Vladivostok, a string of new slipways were to be put into construction, with the goal of providing the Soviet Navy with the shipbuilding capacity to replace it's ageing capital ships with larger, more modern vessels as well as supplement its smaller ships with a crash construction program.

To assist in this industrial build-up, Soviet diplomats would reach out to any nation within Europe that wished to establish trading links with the Soviet Union and make the message clear: the Soviet Union was willing to part with military equipment and expertise in exchange for cold, hard cash. It would be a betrayal of socialist principles, but practicality would trump principle without the need for Stalin to spare it a second thought.

Ja, vi elsker dette landet!
January 1936
Oslo

King Hakkon VII scaled down the steps to the main hallway in the Imperial Palace, the way decorated with pictures of the nations past victories and the history of the nation. it made him think about the potential future of the nation, how the army was poorly trained, hence why he wanted to avoid any conflict with a potential nation at all costs, even if he had to sell himself into slavery, he would do it. but he also wanted to change that poorly trained mentality of the Norwegian armed forces so they would give the illusion of a well trained military, and he decided all of that started with the Navy.
grabbing a telephone, he rolled in a number and was connected to Admiral Øsland Æsvalund Kristaanslav.
"Admiral Kristaanslav, this is King Hakkon of Norway, I have some plans to expand the naval fleet to two more armored cruisers, I sent the plans over this morning did you get them?"
Kristaanslav's tired voice replied with hints of alcohol in it.
"Yeah, I have, they seem like thorough plans for an expansion, the only question is how are we going to get these vessels? the designs on the twin 203mm (8in) are sound and I know a few guys that can cast the first turret in a month at least, do we have a dockyard to make these new additions to the fleet at? and the Throndsen and Otto will take a while to build."
"you have heard of Narvik right? that is where the ships will be built, is one of our shipyards, that and Oslo it'self. the crews will be easy to come by, as I'm sure a pay boost in krones will tempt any man worth his salt to the ranks of the Royal Norwegian Navy. also, did you get my other plans?"
"the ones for the destroyer class? yeah, I'll get to work on both of these projects soon enough, let me find the right help and I'll get to it."
"that was what I expected to hear, and I can agree to that, good luck."
with that, the phone was removed from Hakkon's head and he put it back on the receiver, ending the call. picking up a newspaper, he got news that the soviets were selling off some old military vessels and surplus equipment, this was the chance Norway had been waiting for, a chance to help the nation get stronger! without thinking, he flew to the typewriter and began to hammer out a message.

TO: Soviet Union
From: King Hakkon VII of The Norwegian Kingdom
Hello there, I am part of the Norwegian government and would like to, after overhearing that you are parting with Military equipment for money, would be honored if you would assist us in a rearmament program. I value trade as much as the next schmuck, as such a trade agreement between the two nations would be beneficial. I also would prefer it if some outdated soviet tanks would be willing to be sold to the Norwegians, perhaps 100 to 200 T-26 tanks if you would like that deal, and maybe some old warships of yours to help bolster my naval forces. I would be willing to pay any price you would be willing to ask.
if you would like to negotiate further, we would be honored to send an ambassador to your nation, or vice versa.

To: King Hakkon VII, King of Norway,

The terms proposed are as follows:

The Soviet Union will:
- Assemble 200 T-26 Model 1931 tanks in Leningrad and ensure that they are in operable condition.

The Kingdom of Norway will:
- Arrange for the shipment of said tanks to the Kingdom of Norway
- Arrange the transfer of $2.5 million USD in gold bullion to the representatives of the Soviet Ministry of Finance. Upon reception of payment, the Soviet Union will release the tanks for shipment abroad.

Future deals regarding spare parts, replacements and future purchases will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

At present, the Soviet Union has no desire for the exchange of naval technology or hardware with the Norwegian nation.

Regards,
Arseny Zverev,
People's Commissar for Finance

Soultz-sous-Forêts
Maginot Line
HQ - Sector 32

Soultz-sous-Forêts was the local headquarters of this portion of the great Maginot Line, known as Sector 32. Based here was the 31st Infantry Battalion. Soultz-sous-Forêts was located close to Fort de Schoenenbourg, which guarded Sector 32 and acted as a major hard point in the local area. The fort itself was stationed in a large hilly region, and Soultz-sous-Forêts was located not too far south of the fort. Today a commanding officer, Gilles M.F. , whom the soldiers refered to as a snobbish, white mustached old fart was coming on inspection and to preform a survey of the region to update topographical maps of the area. In addition, he was assigned to look for any possible un-noticed defense positions.

Commandant Gilles M.F. - Mission Statement wrote:
THIS DOCUMENT HAS BEEN PRODUCED BY FRENCH ARMY COMMAND.

Objectives:
  • Surveying Company will preform surveying of non-fortified regions, green on maps.
  • Surveyors are to identify natural defensive positions if at all possible, i.e. ridges, hills, valleys, flat plateaus, rivers, etc.

Notes:
  • After surveying objectives are complete, and defensive locations identified French Army Command is to be sent a responding detailing necessary defensive equipment and weaponry for Sector 32, in response to the Rhineland crisis.
  • French Army Command is also to be alerted that local roads may not be wide enough for optimal tactical and strategic use, and that steps should be taken by engineering units to improve and/or widen local roads in Sector 32.

King Hakkon VII stared at the response from the soviets and clapped his hands in wonder. just then, a servant came in with a pitch of water and a plate of open faced sandwiches.
"what's the good news sir?"
" I have just received a reply from the Russians saying that they will transfer the tanks over once we have paid the necessary amount of 2 and a half million dollars in gold bullion."
"so that means that we will have an armored corp? do any of us know how to use the soviet tanks?"
"um, well I haven't thought of that, but I know a handful of really smart Norwegian blokes that can help us learn how to drive and operate this things. now then, get me pen and paper, I will write off a reply to the soviets, oh, and get me General Carl Johan Erichsen."
"Yes sir."
as the aide left, the general, who was waiting outside, entered the room and bowed slightly.
"you majesty, how may I serve you?"
" I want you to begin to train the men in operation and movement of Soviet T-26 tanks."
"soviet tanks?"
Erichsen looked puzzled at the answer.
"Why are we using soviet tanks?"
"because they were for sale and we are opportunistic buyers,Erichsen. now don't screw this up."
"sir, I do not know how to operate one of the tanks you are buying, they are obsolete anyway."
"bah, you can always learn as you go along, that's my motto, now stop being a prick and wait for the first shipment to arrive. "
"alright then, I shall do as you command, I will not let you down."
"you had better not."
with that small threat agaisnt his job issued, Erichsen merely gulped and walked out of the room to prepare the necessary facilities for the tanks as Hakkon gave orders for ships to be readied to sail to Leningrad as he wrote off a reply to the soviets.

TO: Arseny Zverev, People's Commissar for Finance in the Soviet Union
From: King Hakkon VII of The Norwegian Kingdom
Your terms you set out are agreeable and we shall pay the $2.5 million USD to the representatives of the Soviet Ministry of Finance. however, we would be interested in some 200 Soviet advisors in order to operate the Tank and to show the potential tank crews what to do. if that is unreasonable or unattainable at this moment, 200 manuals for the tank in Norwegian print would do just fine.
also, please disregard the note of a potential purchasing of soviet naval units, as that was an accidental thing that my editor failed to cut out because I failed to inform him.

January, 1936
Moscow, Soviet Union

With the successful conclusion of the transfer of arms to the Kingdom of Norway, the Soviet Politburo was felt brave enough to announce the "Five Year Plan for the Defence of Socialism" to the nation. While the expansion of the production of artillery, aircraft and armoured vehicle production would be of little concern to the major naval powers of the world, the Soviet naval expansion would send shock waves through the naval ministries of Europe.

Unbound by the Washington Naval Treaty, the USSR had a free hand at designing and building warships, unrestrained by tonnage or armament limitations as were the other major powers. To that end, the People's Commissar for Defence, Kliment Voroshilov, announced on the radio to the Soviet people that the Soviet Navy would be embarking to build twenty of the Kirov-class cruisers, two of which were already in the first stages of construction. To support these ships, 80 Gnevny-class destroyer hulls were to be laid down over the next five years. On top of that, the White Sea-Balic Canal was to be lengthened and deepened over the next five years, to enable ocean-going vessels to transit between the two seas. Voroshilov closed with saying that further work was continuing behind the scenes, with the best minds of Soviet naval design already hard at work designing better and larger ships to guard the bastion of socialism.

What the governments of Europe did not know was the planned deployments of these new ships - five new cruisers and twenty destroyers would be sent to the Baltic and Northern Banner Fleets, while ten cruisers and forty destroyers were destined for the Soviet Pacific Fleet. The hope was that this would free up older ships to be re-positioned to the Soviet Black Sea fleet, where the theoretical naval opposition would be limited. While the Soviet Navy had never been viewed as a serious threat by the western powers to date, the news that the Soviet Navy was embarking on a massive expansion while the Western navies were still limited by the naval treaties was something that could not be ignored.

To: King Hakkon VII, King of Norway,

As we have received the value of gold bullion as per our agreement, we release the 200 T-26 tanks into the hands of the Norwegian agents for transportation.

Provided are 200 manuals in Norwegian for the use and operation of these vehicles.

If the Norwegian nation wishes to arrange for Soviet instructors to educate Norwegian tankers in the use of these vehicles, the Soviet Government has instructed me to inform you that such an arrangement may be possible in exchange for the Soviet Union constructing a non-military weather and seaplane base on the island of Jan Mayen.

Regards,
Arseny Zverev,
People's Commissar for Finance

Kingdom of Belgium

Image

Prime Minister Paul van Zeeland peered down at the thick ream of papers that had occupied his desk, inwardly sighing. He had only just arrived, and already all these reports had accumulated on his desk. Picking up the first, he reviewed it. The item detailed the falling unemployment rates, which had been plummeting ever since the introduction of the Plan de Man which had been put into effect several years back. The percentage of unemployed Belgians, which in the 1930s had risen as high as 23%, was steadily dropping thanks to the policies devised by Henri de Man. Although many Belgian politicians had been hesitant to work with de Man due to his political views(which resembled those of the National Socialists in Germany), the Plan had been a lifesaver and had temporarily restored the people's faith in their government.

Setting aside that report, Paul took the next. The Rexist Party, a coalition of far-right organizations who looked up to Hitler's NSDAP, had been steadily gaining power ever since the elections earlier this same year, in which it had nabbed 11% of the vote. To the Prime Minister this was alarming; attempts to curb the growth of such extremist organizations had been largely unsuccessful, and van Zeeland did not want to see in a Rexist as his successor in 1939. Still, he had faith that the Belgian people would remember their democratic roots and stay as far away as possible from nuts like the Rexists. Tabling that sheet as well, the Belgian leader next addressed a military matter. The Belgian General's Staff were frankly frightened by the fast-paced rearmament programs their Eastern neighbor was undertaking, and so was Paul. The German Vaterland was rapidly rebuilding the famed military it had lost at Versailles in 1914, and this should have been alarming to anyone.

The Prime Minister authorized the construction of a fortified line on the German border, as much to supply people with new jobs as create a defensive line and reassure his generals. Another military report outlined the many faults of the Belgian armed forces. The military experts in Brussels were adamant that the Belgian army should have armored battalions, that the Navy needed heavy warships, and that new aircraft must be ordered from Britain and France. Paul dismissed their concerns without hesitation. While the growth of Germany's armed forces was something to keep in mind, van Zeeland knew that Hitler was an intelligent man and that he would not be foolish enough as to provoke some sort of conflict. Even if he did, Belgium's neutrality had to be respected; after all, look at what happened to Germany last time it attempted to overrun the Kingdom.

Near the bottom of the pile were summaries of what was happening in the Belgian Congo. The current monarch's grandfather, Leopold II, had had his way with Belgium's sole colony, exploiting it and committing atrocities against its population. Doing so had set back the Congo by a few decades, and certainly the people were no longer willing to accept Belgian rule without question. New policies of appeasement and statements of friendship were not enough to convince the natives, and so more had to be done. Countless resources were to be spent in the construction of schools and public works for the colony, as well as less public buildings to suck the Congo of its many resources. With the permission of Leopold III, a benevolent, scholarly king, these projects had been launched and hopefully would convince the Africans that the new government's initiatives were sincere.

Finally was an analysis of European and World Politics. Germany and Italy, the two Fascist powerhouses of Europa, were edging towards each other. The old alliance established in the Great War between Britain and France was still in force, although the two nations were not without their arguments. Both had assured that while they stood Belgium was under their protection, another result of the disastrous war which had been fought a generation ago. The rest of the Benelux nations were also traditionally neutral powers, and so the French-speaking state had only one potential threat; Germany. While precautions had to be taken, Paul was quite sure that no European conflict would erupt. The peace established at Versailles would hold another hundred years, and the Prime Minister had no doubt about it.

Hakkon VII looked at the reply, and grabbed a cigar while he was at it. plopping on the nearby couch, he read it to himself and then to his dog, Ravik.
"what do you think? should we let them build a weather and seaplane base on Jan mayen?"
the black and white German Sheppard licked the man's nose in agreement.
"so it's settled then, they can build on that base, I know i may be fucking myself over in the ass if the Stalin feller decides that Norway's wood is making him compensate for something, and invades the damned viking nation, but on the plus side, we'll have the start of the armored program and the valuable experience of these, tank crews that they are planning on sending, I'll do it."
the dog began to scratch himself as Hakkon got off the couch and walked over to the typewriter.

To:Arseny Zverev,People's Commissar for Finance of the Soviet Union
From: Hakkon VII,King of the Norwegian Kingdom and it's people
the need of educated soviet tank drivers is too great as of now, so I will accept the establishment of a Non military and weather seaplane base on the island of Jan Mayen. the T-26 tanks are to be a grand improvement to the almost nonexistent Norwegian armored corp, and a first step in peaceful and perhaps cooperative relations between the two nations. expect ten transports to arrive at Leningrad in two days in order to acquire the shipment of armored goods and rounds.

with that, he sent the letter off as a general entered the room. annoyed by this, he put the dog outside and put on a face of gladness to see the general.
"ah,General Carl Johan Erichsen again, so good to see you, now what is it you want to talk about?"
"the fact that we have outdated rifles, corrupt officials in the ranks, biplanes, and not nearly enough soldiers to prepare for the war, only 50,000! our population is almost three million, and a force of 50,000 is not going to be able to cover all the territory we have under our control as effectively, if at all! I was just down at the armaments ministry and they said they have a company of twenty five 7.5cm cannons without sights and that they will have the parts made for them in a week, a week! the rifles we are using are outdated and the machine guns we're equipping our troops are few and obsolete at that extent!"
"well, what would be some solutions, general?"
"First off, withdraw all biplanes from active service, and have only 10 army and 7 navy biplane trainers, second off, get a better chain of producing units, have workers operate as a team ,and not as individual units making stuff at their own pace, I'll find it would go much faster if that was put into play. Third, I want 30,000 more soldiers equipped for war, and 3,000 more sailors readied to take on the jobs of manning the new ships in the fleet once they come online, and for the love of god, you should inspect the coastal defenses outside of Oslo, they are in bad shape!"
Hakkon felt a little insulted, but he nodded in agreement. " the biplanes shall be withdrawn and the factories will be reorganized. the soldiers will take more time to prepare for war, and the sailors will need more ships to work on. if you really want me to come out of the house, I shall go on a little trip, let me get my coat and we can go as a pair."
Erichsen looked baffled at the response as Hakkon VII got his coat and forced the two out the door to the car.

Port of Narvik
as the lights were still on, several military commanders of the smaller Norwegian ships in the harbor entered the destroyer Garm to plan out a possible strategy. sitting at a small wooden table were Admirals Kristaanslav and Harvik Jutlas Heigosund.
"thank you for joining me Harvik, I feel quite lonely on this ship."
Harvik chuckled slightly as he drank down the beer infront of him.
"It's quite alright Øsland, I don't mind getting a drink and talking with you, you're quite an enjoyable man. now then, the naval strategy for a potential war has two possible plans?"
"Yes, Operations regndråpe and skydekke. regndråpe is a strategy for having the navy gather up for a decisive battle, and if we lose it, we shall withdraw to the various ports in order to conduct hit and run missions on enemy cargo ships, the plan calls for the main Norwegian coastal defense ships to act as a defense for the capital until it is under threat too much for them to defend it. then the costal defense ships shall withdraw to the port of Narvik, where our naval forces that are dispersed shall harry and harass the enemy fleet, along with the air force thanks to the airports nearby, once the enemy has been exhausted, the big gunned ships of the fleet will appear and finish off the enemy."
"that plan has some flaws, such as what if the enemy sends another force to chase after the ships that is not fatigued and defeats the main capital ships of Norway? then we will be in a pickle. if that happens, I suggest we group up every ship to engage the enemy, even if we lose."
"I see. now then, skydekke is a plan of withdrawal and scorched earth, the main naval units shall flee along with a defense to the death in small pockets to buy as much time for the navy as possible, with the blowing up of anything that would be of use to the enemy."
"we shall consider saving the main naval forces potentially later on, we shall go with Operation regndråpe for now. I am ordering the Dockyards to hasten in the building of the costal defense ships Throndsen and Otto."
with a small nod, them meeting ended as the Harvik stared out at the lights and sounds of the dockyard as the Destroyer sleipner's hull was attacked and built by swarms of minimum wage construction workers anxiously waiting to go home.

Colonge, Germany
January, 1936
Army group A

Party flags lined the streets, hung from every window and lamp post, and were waved from the tiny hands of thousands of children as the grey coated soldiers goose-stepped passed them in the long parade lines. Horst-Wessel-Lied was played by a stationary band positioned next to a podium of honor. Upon the podium of honor stood several saluting generals, Field Marshal Heins Guderian, and deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess. The reason for the parade was to mark the first time that German troops had marched in the Ruhr since the Versailles treaty of 1919. A V of planes flew over head of the parade making the crowd look upward and point at them buzz by. Hess smiled, feeling pride in his nation. Sure the Entente would raise hell about it, but could they really make such a strong argument for why Germans shouldn't be allowed to march in Germany?

Berlin, Germany
January, 1936

The Fuhrer laid down his pen back down on his desk after finally finishing the paper. It was the letter he would send to the Entente once they eventually ( and inevitably ) demanded to know why he violated the Versailles treaty by moving troops into the Ruhr. He breathed out, satisfied by his work - and not a moment too soon, as he heard a knock on the door. " Come in. " the door was opened by an SS guard from the outside, who led in Herman Goering. The large and puffy faced Goering was perhaps not the most competent for man for his position, but he was loyal and he was manageable. Saluted, " Mein Fuhrer. " The leader nodded to Goering, who lowered his arm. " What developments do you have for me? "

" Mein Fuhrer, it is not a training exercise as we had originally thought it so. It appears to be troop movements. Several submarines are moving around the western Baltic sea - destination still unclear. It may also be of use to know that it doesn't appear they want be spotted. " Hitler straightened his back and looked off into a corner of the room he was in. He sniffled his nose as he left Goering in silence. " Would you - you like for a barrier to be made between Pommeran and Sweden? "

" No! " the response was immediate and surprised Goering. " We already will scaring the Entente, ship movements by us would only further their fears. Allow them to pass unhindered by our navy. Have we kept detailed records of their known movements Herr Goering? "

" Jahole mein Fuhrer! "

" I would like you to bring them to me as soon as possible. "

" Of course mein Fuhrer! "

" Good, thank you Herr Goering. That will be all for now. "

Goering saluted once again, and was dismissed out of the room. The leader looked down at the paper lying on his desk. Once he got those records, he would write up an alternative letter for the Entente. These soviet movements could prove to be a boon for Germany's goals.

Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and Cabinet

The Prime Minister gazed out his window, watching the people walk by going about their daily business, it was a rather average day, save for the miracle that was the lack of rain, Chamberlain smoked away as he listened to his gramophone. This went for about an hour until one of the butler's barged into the room, holding the daily newspaper, Chamberlain looked back at the butler, who exclaimed, "My Lord, the Germans have entered the Rhineland!" Chamberlain immediately stood in disgust, pulled the needle from the gramophone and said "Fetch me Lord Halifax, I'll be damned if Hitler doesn't hear about this! The bastard." Chamberlain scoffed as he threw his half-finished cigarette in the bin and immediately prepared a statement to be sent to France, Belgium and the of course, the Germans.

Bonjour, with the recent events of the German remilitarization of the Rhineland, it is obvious that we must come together to prevent another disastrous war, possibly provide a show of force to dissuade Hitler from any other aggressive actions. I would like you to send an envoy to London to discuss where the British can assist the French line, sending a British Expeditionary Force to your nation to show Hitler that the Alliance of the United Kingdom and France is not only invincible, but immortal. I will be sending a letter to the Germans demanding an explanation, which I feel we may need to discuss with them why they are sending military units to the Rhineland and breaking the Treaty of Versailles, but I suppose I can discuss that with a French delegation. I hope you receive this letter in good health.

I can only condemn the actions of Germany, the blatant aggression and the disregard for peace, frankly, I was aghast at the news. I can only imagine what reaction you hoped to garner by this action. While ultimately annoyed, we, in the effort to preserve peace, as was established by the Treaty of Versailles, will kindly request that you halt future actions that may provoke unnecessary conflict. If you require further discussion, you may contact the home office. Good day.

Good evening, in light of recent events of German aggression, it becomes apparent that one must look to their friends, and in the Great War it showed us that Belgian territory is vital in the preservation of civilization from the Huns. While I can honestly not fathom another war commencing, Hitler sending units to Cologne provides great concern that they may seek to intimidate their betters; now is the time where we must show Fritz that they cannot frighten us. I would like to offer support to the Belgian army in materialistic or monetary support, as well if you would like a temporary battalion of units, to bolster the number of units defending Belgium, we would be quite happy. I hope you are well.

United States of America

January 1936
President Roosevelt was sipping his morning coffee while waiting for one of his staffers to bring him his morning news paper. Then suddenly interrupting him, his staffer Fredrick rushed to him "Mr President! Please read the headline of the paper!". Roosevelt took the paper from his staffer and read the headline out loud, "Germany annexed Ruhr despite Treaty. My goodness Fredrick... we must act on this immediately!" Fredrick replied by saying "But how Mr. President? We can't just invoke a conflict. If we do that we could risk plummeting our economy further into the ground, we have our own domestic problems to deal with first, I recommend we write to him and ask for an explanation first and also write to the other members of the entente first and see where they stand on this violation of the treaty". The President replied "Good point, I'll write to them soon as I finish my morning coffee and fill in the crossword section of the paper...".

Good day Mr. Chamberlain, as you may have noticed from the news that Mr. Adolf Hitler has violated the Treaty of Versailles and invaded the Rhineland. I am hoping to hear a response back from him soon for the reasoning of such a drastic action as this. However due to the economic depression we are hesitant in sending troops over and risking spending more money then need to. I'm going to address congress about this today and I also ask that you address your parliament. However I also want to know where you stand on the issue so please respond ASAP.

Ankara
Turkey

President Atatürk was looking out the window on his office, watching the beautiful clouds whiz by on the blue sky. His cloudwatching was disrupted my Tefvik Aras, the Turkish Minister of Foreign affairs, charging through the doors

"Sir, the Germans have militarised the Rhinelands!"
"Have I ever told you your jokes are hilarious?"
"I'm not joking, Sir."
"Sit down"

Tefvik sat down in the chair opposite the President's and placed a file on the table. The President sat down and looked through the file.

"He wants war," he whispered to himself "Send squad of 4 spies to Berlin to try to find out what the hell Hitler is thinking of doing."
"Yes SIr!"

As Tefvik left the room Atatürk picked up the phone and called Fevzi Çakmak, the Chief of the Turkish General Staff.

"Fevzi, have you heard about the Germans militarising the Rhinelands?"
"Unfortunately, I have Sir, but I have some good news. The Soviets are "willing to part with military equipment for money"
"That doesn't seem very socialist... but anyway, have they produced any prices?"
"Not yet, Sir."
"Ok, thank you, Fevzi, goodbye."

To Joseph Stalin
From Mustafa Atatürk
Greetings from Ankara. The Turkish military is very poorly equipped and where thinking you might help us as we have learned that you are willing to sell military equipment. We were wondering how much would 20 T-28 model tanks would cost us? Our doors are open to any diplomats you want to send to us to negotiate prices.

Moscow, Soviet Union

The Kremlin was a beehive of activity, but few knew why. A convoy of staff cars had entered earlier in the day, no doubt high level party functionaries summoned by Stalin. This was not unusual for a day's business in the Kremlin. What followed was unusual - the sudden appearance of large numbers of soldiers around the Kremlin. Rokossovsky, Blyukher and Tukhachevsky had all been spotted arriving, accompanied by their staffs. Curiously, all had worn sidearms, a fact that went unremarked at first. Voroshilov was notably nowhere to be found, and unreachable at the Ministry of Defence.

Little news filtered out from the Kremlin - a lockdown was obviously in place, and those who attempted to gain entry were either detained outright or turned away. Whatever the events transpiring within, there was no chance of news leaking out. Even still, rumours abounded. Stalin was ill, Stalin had received great news, Stalin was planning on making an important announcement later in the day. The men of the Kremlin Regiment were following orders from Yagoda, and there was no word from the head of the NKVD as to his actions or intentions.

At Moscow Passazhirskaya railway station, there was a similar collection of soldiers and staff cars, evidently awaiting an arriving train. When the train began to pull into the station, the soldiers, with calls and shouts, cleared the platforms of any bystanders, so the arrival of the train did nothing to clarify things. The train, with just a single sealed carriage, bound non-stop from Leningrad, stopped, disembarked a single figure attended by a half-dozen retainers, before it shunted away from the platform and the mysterious arrivals whisked away in staff cars.

It was only late that night that a voice that had not been heard within the Soviet Union for a long time was broadcast over the airwaves - that of Leon Trotsky.

Comrades, I talk to you this evening to bring you news of a momentous occurrence in the course of our revolution.

In the face of undeniable evidence that our former comrade Josef Stalin aspired to amass dictatorial powers about himself, and to ruthlessly eliminate all within the Party that would oppose him, the workers, peasants and soldiers of the Soviet Union have risen up to cast him down and smash his dreams of restoring the autocracy of the Tsars. Comrade Stalin is now in the custody of the true guardians of the revolution, the Red Army, and will remain there until he may answer the charges laid against him in a court of law. Furthermore, Comrade Defense Minister Voroshilov has been taken into custody for being complicit in the crimes of Comrade Stalin, and will have to answer to a court-martial.

In this period of instability, the Council of Ministers has invited me to return from my exile abroad to assume temporarily the role of General Secretary of the Central Committee, until such a time as new elections to the Soviets may be possible. Without the risk of Stalin's repressive use of the bureaucratic to stifle dissent and promote his brand of rampant cronyism, I am overjoyed to accept.

To all Soviet men and women, I would implore to remain calm in this time. Comrade Stalin will be tried by a free court, and the proceedings made public, so that all may see the undeniable evidence of the monstrous plans he had in store in order to establish. I will immediately dispel the myth that this is a bourgeoisie coup in disguise before the apparatus of Stalinist autocracy trumpets it to all that will listen - this is a return to the true revolution, the revolution that many of us fought for all those years ago! To highlight this, I have written orders for the immediate release of Comrades Kamenev and Zinoviev, who were the first victims of Stalin's nefarious plot to take up the mantle of dictator.

Long live the Revolution!

The state of affairs were worsening for the Naval graduate, Prime Minister Okada. The radicals had almost got him a few days before in February, and the militarists were intent of going about, especially with the placarding Hirota rising to power, chosen to gain office by the 9th. Democracy was withering in Japan and the voices of the moderates were being deafened. The officer corps were getting wild, the Kwantung Army was acting independently, the former allies that were the U.S and the U.K, now drifting further from Japan. There was not much assurance for the Japanese democratic government, or what was going to be left of it, as the militarist take power.

Around the capital, everything was going along peacefully. Men and women went to work, children went to school, and the Japanese Empire stood firm. Included to all, was the evident growth of the romantic nationalistic and militaristic society. Children at schools were taught how to wield bayonets and rifles, men and women were persuaded to perform routine exercises at home and the work place to keep them fit for combat; even monks and priests were taught in the combat. Most of the industry diverted its forces to be worked in military factories, building aircraft, tanks, and rifles. The Japanese continued on impressively, under the slogan of '富国強兵', or 'Enrich the Country, Strengthen the Armed Forces', which led its emergence as one of the world powers possible.

As the works of the common Japanese unfolded, civilians and soldiers alike going about, the Kwantung Army was up and around in Manchuria, fighting and planning their proxy armies into the borderlands.

Chahar and Suiyuan borderlands, between the Republic of China and the Empire of Manchukuo
Demchugdongrub, the leader of Mongols of Inner Mongolia, rising to power in last year, had set up a Mongol Government in the borderlands. With this past development Japanese commanders of the Kwantung Army gave support to the new Mongol Government, in a bid to weaken China and subject them to the influence of Japan. In establishing a ceremonial Mengjiang-Manchukuo alliance, between the autonomous Mengjiang government and the Japanese puppet government, Puyi honoring the Mongol leader with the title of Martial Virtue Prince of the First Rank, also had subjected Mengjiang to the Japanese bloc. In the Kwantung's independent action, Japanese and Manchu troops assisted Demchugdongrub in the recent take over of Chahar, meeting great success.

Now, they plan to march on Suiyuan.

Moscow, Soviet Union

The confusion of the return of Trotsky left much of the Soviet Union in a state of paralysis for nearly a week after the once-exiled political figure had broadcast over the radio. In many respects, life simply remained the same for the vast majority of citizens within the Soviet Union. Their day-to-day life carried on, without much changing.

The case was different at the high levels of politics, as Trotsky embarked on an extensive campaign to discredit Stalin in the eyes of the Soviet people. Orders were issued countermanding the previous orders suppressing reports of the recent famine in the Ukraine - a move Trotsky was able to make as he had been in exile at the time - as well as reports of Stalin's treatment of political opponents such as Kamenev and Zinoviev, who were freed from NKVD custody and lent their political weight behind Trotsky.

Molotov had not escaped arrest, and was to stand trial for his actions in the Ukraine. Trotsky also sent out orders for the careful release of political opponents from imprisonment in the Gulags, and ensured that it was well publicized. The newspapers, both national and local, were filled with stories of how Comrade Trotsky had arranged the release of so-and-so, wrongfully imprisoned at the orders of Stalin.

The new ruling power was an uneasy coalition between Trotsky, Kamenev, Zinoviev and the Army Cheif of Staff Yegorov, who had replaced the imprisoned Voroshilov as Commissar for Defence. While there was friction between the four, they all shared the bond of having fought in the Civil War, and were able to co-operate for the good of the revolution. The Red Army generals by-and-large fell in behind Yegorov, with the notable exception of Budyonny, who had fled to Stalingrad on the news of Trotsky's takeover and attempted to suborn the troops of the Southern Military District to revolt against Moscow's rule and return Stalin to power.

Budyonny, a close friend of Stalin, felt his positon as a Marshal of the Soviet Union was in critical danger, and acted swiftly. A gifted commander of cavalry in the Civil War, he raced to Stalingrad and tore the command of the garrison from the city's commander before Moscow had time to wire through orders. Drawing on the lessons learned from his Civil War days, when the loyalty of a unit was sometimes questionable, Budyonny immediately gathered what he could from the Stalingrad garrison, commandeered a dozen trains and filled them with soldiers before setting off northwards towards Tambov. His plan was quite simple - assemble a body of troops and take Moscow.

However, Budyonny's counter-coup blundered into Tukhachevsky outside of Tambov. At the first news of Budyonny's actions in Stalingrad, Trotsky and Yegorov had dispatched Tukhachevsky to deal with the uprising. Taking with him troops from Moscow and nearby cities, including a tank brigade, he formed a ad-hoc force of some eight thousand men to defend Tambov. The resulting battle was a a confrontation between the old and the new in Soviet military thought.

Budyonny fought the battle as he had fought battles in the past - a massed charge of infantry followed by a crushing attack by cavalry. Tukhachevsky responded with the modern approach - artillery and tanks. The battle swiftly turned in to a rout for Budyonny, though nobody could fault his bravery. His attempt to flank Tukhachevsky's line with his horse blundered into Tukhachevsky's tanks and swiftly routed, at which point the tanks were able to roll up Budyonny's infantry force. Budyonny himself had three horses shot from under him and was wounded twice before finally falling in action. He died a brave man, brandishing his pistol in the open while trying to reform his shattered infantry. With his death, the counter-coup fell apart, and there was no further open resistance to Trotsky's establishment as the new Soviet premier, though there was no doubt in Trotsky's inner circle that resistance was merely bubbling under the surface.

To: Mustafa Atatürk

The Soviet Union would be interested in what you propose, but only within the context of a larger treaty governing access to the Bosphoros and Dardanelles.

It is our proposal that:

The Soviet Union shall provide:
- 20 T-28 tanks, with a cadre to instruct Turkish forces in their use.

In exchange, the Turkish nation shall:
- Sign an agreement permitting safe transit for all Soviet ships through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles from this day forward.
- Agree that the Soviet Union shall have the right to request that the Turkish nation refuse to permit the transit of naval vessals belonging to hostile nations through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.

It is my hope that this is merely the first step to closer relations between Turkey and the Soviet Union. If these current negotiations prove fruitful, I envision that Soviet naval interests in the Mediterranean Sea and Turkish military strength may both prosper together.

Regards,
Yegorov, Commissar for Defence.

Kingdom of Belgium

Prime Minister Paul van Zeeland entered his quaint, small office and hung up his overcoat and top hat on the rack. He was pleased to see that one of the aides had already brought a stack of telegrams and a steaming mug of coffee up for him. Taking a long sip as he sat behind his mahogany desk, the Belgian leader shuffled through the morning's mail. First was a telegram from the Governor of the Belgian Congo, Émile Devereux. Paul ripped it open and read the lengthy dispatch, which discussed the arrival of materials which were intended to build public works in the Congo, as well as the general state of the sole colony of Belgium. Paul set aside the telegram, intending to reply to it later. He had just lifted his gilded letter opener to the next envelope when a young man burst into his office. "Urgent news, Prime Minister! Hitler has remilitarized the Rhineland!" Paul dropped the letter opener and stared at the man in disbelief.

Finally he spoke. "What you say is true?" "Of course, Monsieur!" Van Zeeland sighed and buried his hands in his face. "What is going on! I thought that the Entente had Hitler's utmost assurances that he would abide by the Treaty of Versailles!" The courier stepped to the side as an aide stepped in. "A telegram for you, sir, from the honorable Lord Halifax of the United Kingdom." The mustached man handed the crisp envelope to Paul, who snatched it and tore it open with his hands. "I can guess what this is about," he muttered, not bothering to dismiss the two men; they were obviously hoping that they could snag a few pieces of information. The Prime Minister scanned the letter. After reading it three times he lowered the piece of paper and looked up to the two young men in front of him. "The British, while not at all convinced that another war will be sparked, are as concerned as I am about the recent push of German forces to the Rhine. They believe that it is vital to the cause of liberty that the old allies work together to force Hitler to back down from his rash moves, and proposes that Britain fund and equip a revitalized Belgian army."

The two aides exchanged worried glances. "Of course I will accept," Paul continued, "not because I am afraid of another war, but because I am want to show Hitler that Belgium is nothing to sneeze at. We proved our courage in the Great War, and I am sure we will show it again in any future conflict. Hitler must not be allowed to think that he can get away with something as drastic as this, an outright violation of the Treaty of Versailles." His audience nodded in agreement. "If you will excuse yourselves, I must get to work on a response to Lord Halifax and a telegram to the French government." As the two men left van Zeeland set aside the other telegrams and pulled out a pen and a fresh sheet of paper, which was already stamped with the Belgian Seal. After a good half-hour of wording and rewording, scrapping and restarting, the final letter to the English was sealed in an envelope and Paul began penning a second to the Third French Republic. At last he wrung his tired hand and began a final letter to Germany, letting them know that Belgium would not stand for this aggressive behavior.
When that was finished and all letters had been safely sent posted away, Paul steeled himself for the coming hail of concerned military officials and frightened citizenry.

Greetings.
The nation of Belgium has been rightly alarmed by the abrupt breach of the Treaty of Versailles by Germany. I was happy, however, to hear from your proud nation. It is reassuring that you will not stand for this sort of behavior, which completely overturns the terms set about in the Treaty of Versailles. Although Belgium maintains neutrality and will strive to remain neutral in any course of events, the rearmament of the Belgian military will be needed to ensure that said neutrality is maintained and not disregarded by any foreign party. It is commendable of you gentlemen to suggest the protection of my nation, and I will wholeheartedly accept it.

I will plan for the worst and hope for the best; planning to counter any threat to Belgian independence and hoping that no such threat will ever linger upon Europe. British equipment will be needed to revitalize our army, as it has been in a state of disrepair since the end of the Great War. However, I must insist that this equipment is paid for, not by the kindhearted government of your nation but by mine. Your offer of a light defensible force is generous, but in the current situation I believe that our famed neutrality is not compromised. In the event of any major threat to Belgian independence I will, in a heartbeat grant Britain and her allies access to Belgium's lands and ports, but since that threat has yet to descend upon my nation I must table your offer for the time being.

I agree that the nations of freedom must rally behind the banner of democracy and face Herr Hitler down, but this must be done as peacefully as possible.

Greetings.
The Belgian nation was shocked to the core when Germany violated the Treaty of Versailles and reoccupied the Rhineland. Clearly Herr Hitler and his lackeys have no regard for the wishes of all the people of Europe, and he needs to be warned that his actions have consequences. Germany is clearly threatening us, and, I will admit it, the Belgian army can not face up to the Germans. We would need equipment and manpower from your great nation. I am prepared to grant military access to you, our brethren in tongue, race, and arms so that Belgium can be fully defended from that raging Hun in Berlin.

I hope that you, President, are prepared to defend Belgian freedoms and that you would provide a token force to help guard our borders as a statement that we stand together against German aggression.

Fevzi was nervous, he rarely had an audience with the President, he was expecting bad news, maybe the spies had discovered that Hitler was planning to invade France. Maybe the Soviets denied any form of trade. When he put his hand on the handle, it slipped off due to the sweat. He took one last deep breath an entered the President's office. There he saw the President, sitting in his chair reading a letter.

"You wanted to see me, Sir"
"Yes. Have a seat."
"What did you want to talk about?"
"The Soviets replied, seems that they managed to reinstate a government pretty quickly."
"What do you mean?"
"Did you not here? Trotsky overthrew Stalin."
"Hmm...interesting. Anyway, what did they say?"
"They will give us the 20 tanks in exchange for passage through the Turkish Straits and that they will be able to request for other nation's vessels not be permitted access through the Straits."
"I don't really like that second part, but this would allow us to improve our relations with the Soviets. I say agree."
"Ok. Here we go."

Mustafa pulled a piece of paper from one of his desk drawers, set it down on the desk and began to write.

Cárdenas quietly sat in a single room, walls on all sides. This year had been especially cold in the City so he wore a a thin wool jacket, which kept him warm enough pared with his soup. In his perfect accent, he spoke in half Spanish and half English.

Por Favor, fetch me a cup of dark coffee.

His aide ran off and quickly returned with a Colombian brew. He slowly took a sip and cringed at the darkness of the coffee.

While sipping his cup of coffee, he quickly began to write a letter to his neighbors in the North.

President Lebrun looked over the stack of telegrams and documents piled on his desk. The telegrams were from the UK, France's staunch ally, the US, and Belgium. He had many issues to pertain too, and decided to start with the Belgian telegram. They reassured him that Hitler needed to know that his actions had consequences, and they did. Only, the consequences would probably be bad for the Entente and good for Hitler. They wanted manpower and equipment to fund their army, and Lebrun had to admit, they needed it, not just for Belgium but for France's stake. In the last Krieg, as the Hun would call it, Germany smashed through Belgium and hit France in the side, nearly killing her.

However, he didn't know how to respond. For infantry weaponry, he had 3 tools available. There was the MAS 36 Repeating Rifle 7.5mm, a good infantry rifle. However, there wasn't even 200,000 produced rifles, and the French Army for the most part was still using Lebels. He considered sending a thousand for the Belgians to experiment with, see if the reliable gun fitted their needs and standards for a infantryman's rifle.

He also had the Chatellerault LMG Model 1929. It was a modified and improved version of the god-awful Chatellerault LMG Model 1924, which was made with poor steel and tended to explode during continuous firing of the weapon. In addition, there were variants made for fortifications, two thousand would be sent to the Belgians.

Finally, he had the Brandt 81mm Mortar Model 1931. It was a excellent mortar, the masterpiece of Edgar Brandt. 100 would be sent to Belgium, much like the other tools at France's disposal. He briefly considered sending aircraft as well, but SNCAM was so sluggish in aircraft production that it just wasn't going to be possible. They needed the planes.

MESSAGE OF FRENCH
FOREIGN MINISTRY

RECIPIENT OF MESSAGE
PRIME MINISTER OF BELGIUM, PAUL VAN ZEELAND
ENCRYPTION:
EXTREME

Greetings to Prime Minister Paul van Zeeland, the French government, with the expressed permission of President Albert François Lebrun has offered to send a thousand MAS Model 1936 rifles, two-thousand Chatellerault LMGs, and 100 Brandt mortars to the Belgian military for use. In addition, we will confirm that France will not let Hitler openly violate the Treaty of Versailles, and that appropriate measures will be taken.

Next was the UK. They offered to send the BEF to France, which the French would enjoy to have, as well, they also mentioned that Britian would take measures against the occupation of the Rhineland. France sent a response.

MESSAGE OF FRENCH
FOREIGN MINISTRY

RECIPIENT OF MESSAGE
DEPUTY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, LORD HALIFAX
ENCRYPTION:
EXTREME

The French Republic would be willing to see the deployment of the British Expeditionary Force into France to deter German forces, and we are willing to send a delegation to London. Through discussion with the Belgians, we have confirmed that they indeed have taken measures to protect themselves, and rightful so, even now we have begun to send the Belgian army weaponry. Although the Belgians have taken defensive measures, we would advise that you request from the Belgians permission to deploy the BEF into Belgium, as we are currently of the opinion that German forces can be held back at the Maginot by ourselves only.

Rome, Mussolini's office
The Duce sat at his desk, reading over the reports that had come in for the day. Nothing to eventful in those papers. Just as he was about to finish his head advisor burst into the room.
"My Duce, I have urgent news!"
"What might it be?"
"The Germans have remilitarized the Rhine land! Hitler is violating the Treaty of Versailles!"
"An interesting development. I'll have to keep an eye on this, After all, this will effect all the major powers. I would consider an alliance with Germany but I fear Hitler's aggressive actions might drag me and Italy into a major war I'd rather not be in."
"Understandable, I would recommend staying as neutral as possible in major global events, Let's try not to get involved in conflicts with other major powers. We'll have to see how things happen though."
"I'll take that into consideration. You are dismissed." The Duce looked back down at his paper work as the advisor turned around and left the room.

Ethiopia
The Italian advance continues, crushing almost all resistance in the army's way. Though the Ethiopians are resilient and are doing anything they can to stop the Italians, they are no match for the modernized equipment and weaponry of the Italian Military. Especially the chemical weapons, which it' s use has come under scrutiny by the league of nations at the beginning of the war in October last year. Though it's use it justified because the Ethiopians are torturing and killing Italian prisoners and wounded solders, as well as using 'dum-dum' bullets which are also not allowed to be used.
The advance continues. With victories of the First Battle of Tembien , Battle of Amba Aradam , and the Second Battle of Tembien, three of the major Ethiopian armies have been destroyed, and their attempt to split the Italian forces in two have failed. The Italian forces now advance towards Addis Ababa. An Italian victory is close.

Small building, Alps, Switzerland
A few Italians gathered in the small and cramped main room. About 20 of them. These Italians were communist sympathizers who had fled the country after the socialist party was banned in Italy. Among them were a couple of the major party leaders. The meeting discussed the Future of the party, The future of Italy, and the possibility of a revolution. Ultimatly it was desired that a revolution was impossible at this point, though if an opportunity arises they will take it. Though they would like to have support from the soviets but they need to keep as quiet as possible for now, if anything got out about them it would mean certain death as Mussolini would have them hunted down.

Ja, vi elsker dette landet!
January 1936
Oslo

Hakkon VII had had his nose in a newspaper all morning long, the results of the coup in the Soviet Union worried him greatly, as he had over 200 T-26 tanks that were old relics of a past age, and he did not think the new government that was established would be willing to sell off old equipment, he was actually planning an invasion of Finland with Russian help, but with that a far hope, he had to postpone the operation by several months. also further down was the German act of invading the Rhineland, which while troubling to the allies, did not immediately concern the Scandinavian power in the European affair, the Norwegians just saw it as Germans reclaiming their rightful territory. turning to General Carl Johan Erichsen, he sighed.
"the reports we are getting from Russia are quite troubling, I don't believe any more supplies will be asked of the new Russian government, this puts a damper in our plans for Operation Fiskekrok (fishing hook). how are the armored regiment's faring?"
"the parts are trying to be made to fix minor problems, and the storehouses are being raided for anything that looks familiar to the parts that are used. one full regiment of 20 tanks are in position, with three more being expected to take around three to five days to traverse the difficult terrain. the artillery guns are being put into position, so far three companies of twelve guns are ready, hardly a bombardment across the entire front."
"here are my orders, build an airfield that can hold 25 biplanes that we are going to use for air support in the attack, get five small hangars to hold five planes each in them." the soldier that entered the room saluted and left the room to tell the orders to the construction crews.
Erichsen raised an eyebrow as he looked at the headline again. "the people are worried slightly, what should we tell them?"
"I shall give a speech to my people, and I also want the other nations to listen, primarily that mustached wearing stiff armed nut job that leads the German people. let us go to the radio station."
with a small nod, the leader of Norway left for the Storting to deliver a speech.
" Greetings, I am the King of Norway, Hakkon VII, Tonight I shall give an address, not only to the Norwegian people as an assurance, but a call for democracies across the world to stand up to oppressive regimes such as the one I am bewailing agaisnt. while, yes, we are of a Germanic descent, and hold close ties to our German brethren that sit in Berlin, we do not accept that a territory such as the Rhineland is invaded without a chance to defend itself, the Germans are barbarics and we shall sharpen the sticks and prepare the slingshots of war, I urge my people to arm themselves in basic needs, so as not to overwhelm the need for rifles on the army, I have faith that the industries of war are begining to turn, with our shipyards begining to produce destroyers that shall assist the Norwegian navy as it defends the sovereign seas of which Ola Nordmann bathes in, of which the Norwegian people spend their holidays and the businessman conducts commerce. the lush landscape of the Norwegian soil shall be defended in blood with no yield, if any nation that seeks to take over the Norwegian crown to fit his cronies in place, they shall be beaten back by shot and steel of the Norwegian might! I urge all nations to stop letting these regimes that say they are helping the people when they are really just warmongers!"
taking a deep breath, he continued.
"I especially plead the United Kingdom, Plead France, to do something about this aggressive stance by the German people. It is a hard choice for me,I know it is, as I am a member of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, my uncles is the King of Greece, and I know how much the people have suffered in the war, I urge the nation to prepare for somewhat of a struggle, for this war will be a war on many fronts if it occurs, the Norwegian colonies must be defended, because we are compensating in that area no doubt, and it will be a royal, no a national embarrassment if the colonies are taken from under the sleeping Norwegians nose, I urge the people to make earnest preparations for the defense of Norway, but not in this moment, but I urge the people to be aware of the world, and to be prepared for a fight with some nation that will not take too kindly to our so called aggressive stance, when they are the aggressors! I thank you and good day, Norway, good day the world!"

with a thunderous applause, Hakkon VII leaves the Storting to write off some letters.

To:Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain of The United Kingdom and the British Empire
From: King Hakkon VII of the Norwegian Kingdom
Greetings, you majesty, from one Monarch to another, I am of the opinion that the German Military and it's subsequent governmental regime is acting aggressively towards other nations, and I fear for the safety of the Belgian, french and British peoples. normally we would not be involved in world affairs, as we were not in world war I, but we feel as though inaction in these world events is an unwise decision for the Norwegian Kingdom and her subjects. as such, we would like a Military Alliance with your nation, to ensure that the Norwegian people are save. we shall also give you access to the Norwegian minerals you want and a share of 10% of all mineral extraction and commerce companies in Norway. you may also land your troops whenever you want in the nation in order to protect the nation, for we can be a valuable airbase for attacks on enemy ships, and an emergency base so you know who is coming.

To:President Albert François Lebrun of the French Third Republic
From:King Hakkon VII of the Norwegian Kingdom
Salutations, President, the German acts have sent shock waves throughout Europe and the Scandinavian nation of Norway, we feel as though we must not let the aggressive acts that the German Reich is doing. I am wiling to fight the German huns if they dare to attack such a firm ally of the Norwegians, as such, with your permission, would like to send an expeditionary force under general Hans Larvek Ålvensgran, the force shall contain 8,000 soldiers total and 20 motor bikes, 5 armored cars, 20 medium cannons and 500 horses for a mounted infantry force. they shall be deployed to help defend the french against the German attacks, if they come. an alliance would also be beneficial in these trying times, and the threat of the Germans grows closer for the tiny nation.

Kingdom of Belgium

The mobilized portion of the Belgian army, which before the German occupation of the Rhineland had stood at just 6,000 men, was enlarged. 8,000 men were called to arms and positioned along the German border, manning forts which had been in service since the Great War. In addition, shipments of French rifles had arrived en masse and were well received by the Belgian military staffs, who petitioned the government to buy thousands more of each type of weapon from France. Elite units of the army such as the Special Forces Group(a newly created unit formed from other commando forces) had their outdated rifles replaced with the first new French rifles. The Belgian navy, which consisted of a mere handful of torpedo boats and patrol ships, was informed that a new flagship was under construction. The B.N.S. Leo Belgicus(Belgian Lion) was a light cruiser and would be produced in Belgian shipyards based on the new British Town-class cruisers which were nearing completion in British shipyards.

While this was seen as folly be many, wasting Belgian resources and providing an easy target to enemy flotillas, it might finally allow the Belgian Navy to be seen as a bona fide maritime force and not a pathetic coastal defense squadron. In addition, many Belgians could find new jobs in shipyards, further lowering unemployment rates, which had skyrocketed in the 1930s due to worldwide economic depression. Despite all they were doing for the Belgian people the van Zeeland government was losing popularity. This was hastened as the Rexist Party and other similar far-right groups gained traction, blaming the old ways and, of course, the Jewry of Belgium for the failing economy and the devastation of the Great War. The Rexists, despite their swelling membership, were underfunded and were experiencing growing pains. The party leaders looked to the German NSDAP for funding and support, hoping that the Nazi officials would see the benefit of a Belgian fascist party in power in the Benelux country.

With portions of the Belgian army being mobilized and their equipment being replaced, many people feared that their homeland was gearing up for war. Frazzled government officials attempted to calm their countrymen with hollow rhetoric, but it proved ineffective. The common Belgian blamed their current government for the rampant unemployment and economic hardships of their country. To the alarm of Britain and France, the Democratic Center were rapidly losing supporters to either Far Right or Far Left radical movements.
If something did not change soon, an abrupt change in Belgian government was quite certain.
Capilean News (Updated 16 November)
Where is the horse gone? Where the warrior?
Where is the treasure-giver? Where are the seats at the feast?
Where are the revels in the hall?
Alas for the bright cup! Alas for the mailed warrior!
Alas for the splendour of the prince!
How that time has passed away, dark under the cover of night, as if it never were.

United States of America

January 1936

Washington D.C.
President Hoover is sitting down in the Oval office while listening to the radio "This just in, Joseph Stalin, Leader of the USSR has been over thrown in a coup plotted by Leon Trotsky..." Hoover interrupted the radio program by saying to his political advisor "Hmm Stalin is no longer in control... Good news William! The USSR is probably going to be more socialist rather than communist under the control of Trotsky". William replied while giving the President a letter "I agree Mr. President, however here is a letter from a nation much closer to home. It's from the United Mexican States". President Hoover reads the letter than replies to William "Looks like Mr. Carderas is willing to meet with us, hopefully this will be the beginning of a long lasting relationship between the two nations to help establish a stronger bond within the countries in North America. William, write back to them exactly as I say...".

Letter to United Mexican States
To: President Lázaro Cárderas
From: President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt
Subject: Possible Meeting
Encryption: High

Good evening amigo! We have received your letter and we will agree to meet in Cancun to discuss the future of our nations and the possibility of establishing a stronger relationship and trade partnership. I will send my foreign minister Henry Goldman to represent my nation at the meeting along with some of our secret servicemen.

Kind Regards,

Franklin D. Roosevelt
