World Cup of (Ice) Hockey 31
Welcome to Hannasea for the 31st World Cup of Ice Hockey. Hannasea is a small, unremarkable city-state federation, located in the Rushmori Alps. Ice hockey is not a majority sport but is growing in popularity, and the country's alpine climate is suited to hosting ice hockey even in late summer. Politically, Hannasea's major influences are the Guild Houses. Originating in medieval Hannasea, the first guilds reflected the trades of the time, such as the Guilds of Fletchers, Coopers, and Chandlers, but over time they have modernized: the most recent trades to have had their Guild Houses officially incorporated include the Guild of YouTube Games Reviewers, the Guild of PPI Claims Telemarketers, and the Guild of Celebrity Jazzercise Workout Videos. Nine of the bigger, richer, more prominent Guilds have bid to host groups during the World Cup of Hockey. The Hannasean people are generally friendly though somewhat intolerant of outsiders and deeply distrustful of non-humans, and are enthusiastic if not entirely knowledgeable ice hockey fans.
Group draw
There are 8 groups of 5. Each group was drawn using seeded pots (the numbers represent current WCoH rankings, not overall seedings - Novaya Zemlya is ranked 6th but, because of Ko-oren's absence, seeded 5th, for example) with the unranked nations randomized. Each group then had one nation drawn from each pot, and each group was then further randomized.
Groups will play a single round robin format as follows:
MD1 (27 August): 2v5 3v4 1rest
MD2 (28 August): 5v3 1v2 4rest
MD3 (29 August): 3v1 4v5 2rest
MD4 (30 August): 1v4 2v3 5rest
MD5
Guild of Mercers Group
The Guild of Mercers is the predominant political power in Hannasea. Though neither the oldest, largest, nor richest Guild House, the nation's dependence on the merchant trade has ensured its concerns are always paramount within the ministries. The Mercers Group will play their games in an entirely new purpose-built arena in the city of Pintook, with teams being given accommodation in the famous brightly colored chalets that cluster the shoreline of Lake Took.

Guild of Mongers Group
The Guild of Mongers is the largest Guild in all Hannasea, though its size sometimes works to its disadvantage. Born of a consolidation between various disparate Guilds - such as the Cheesemongers, Ironmongers, and Fishmongers - it is often riven by internal divisions over different types of "mongering", and as such is relatively politically irrelevant. Its stadium reflects this, conjuring up a unique smell that combines the ambience of a fishmonger's stall with the character of iron foundry, a charming aroma that will also percolate through the accommodation rooms above the arena. It is based in the industrial heartland of New Blopping.

Guild of Alchemists Group
The oldest Guild in Hannasea was drifting into irrelevance with the decline of belief in alchemy, but encountered a surge of renewal in the eighteenth century as industrial chemistry took off. While the accoutrements of its Guild House - including the associated lodgings and hockey arena, bedecked with alchemic symbols and with much gold leaf on display - speak to its past, most of its Guild members derive their income from more modern occupations such as agrochemicals. It is one of two major Guilds in the First City of Old Blopping, and is in fact one of the few extant buildings in what used to be the Royal Houses.

Guild of Apothecaries Group
Another ancient Guild, the Apothecaries have, much like the Alchemists, substantially modernized their operation, and only narrowly voted down a proposal to rename themselves as the Guild of Impotence Medication Suppliers. Essentially, they're the trade guild of the pharmaceutical industry, and as such very wealthy. Although isolated to the coastal city of Kent, their hotels and arena are modern and sophisticated, with an 18,000 seating capacity, large television replay screens, and a shifty-looking guy who hangs around the changing rooms selling unidentifiable purple pills by the handful.

Guilds of Skinners and Tailors Group
The skinners' and tailors' Guilds have been locked in historic battle over seniority for centuries, and when it came to bidding on which Guild would play host to the Hannasean national team, another round of fractious arguing broke out. To settle the dispute, the other Guilds have agreed that the two Guilds will co-host the group, building a new shared arena, one half of which is decorated with luscious furs (and scary skinning knives), the other with fine silks and haberdashery (and slightly less scary...sewing needles?). Teams in this group will be housed in a small B&B determined to be equidistant to the nearest centimetre between the two Guild Houses in the cities of Lampton and Brethwick respectively, meaning it's situated in the middle of nowhere.

Guild of Launderers
The richest Guild House in all Hannasea is found in the somewhat inconspicuous town of Market Haverlock, but it has little to do with the humble trade of linen washing. Instead, it has evolved into the trade association for the bankers of Hannasea, a country whose notorious secrecy laws make it something of a tax haven for international depositors wanting to evade too much scrutiny as to the nature of their accounts. The banal exterior of the Guild House hides the lavish interior, and teams in this group - including the world #1 seeds - can expect five star accommodation, while they will play their games in a magnificent, fully underground arena, situated under Lake Carrier.

Guild of Brewers Group
An old, wealthy and immensely popular Guild House, the Guild of Brewers is based in the First City of Old Blopping. Its operations have continued relatively unperturbed by the march of history, and are mostly an unpolitical house that stays out of meddling with the Ministries, save for the four years of Prohibition in the early 20th century when a hitherto peaceful Guild turned itself into a violent insurrectionary force. To this day, it retains a symbolic private military presence overlooking the Chief Ministry no such foolishness returns. The Guild is under strict orders to limit its complimentary offerings to its Group members, who will be housed in a series of inns around the city and play in an arena built out of old casks (two hours of breathing the air inside will be enough to fail a breathylyzer test).

Guild of Pepperers Group
The remarkably bland natural cuisine of Hannasea has long created a strong demand for the spice trade, and the spicers' Guild is fairly powerful as a result. Located in the port city of Upper Niedewe, on the Incomprehensible Peninsula, the Guild has a role much larger than merely supplying table salt and pepper, also effectively running international trade negotiations and being strongly protective of merchant shipping. The resulting political volatility reflects the spiciness of its wares, but it should be able to offer good accommodation in seafront cottages and an arena built into the Cliffs of Strangeness, giving one team a magnificent ocean vista, and the other team a slightly less magnificent vista of solid rock.

Rosters and roleplays
If you are new to NS Sports, I would strongly recommend the Guide to Sports Roleplaying.
If possible, post a team roster. There will be a roster bonus, up to one whole day's RP bonus, available for everyone who posts a roster, which will be graded, as with all roleplays, on detail, style, and humor. A personal request would be that if your team is known as by something other than your nation's name, please include this in your roster.
Please make sure to post RP permissions. If you don't post permissions, your opponents may assume default permissiveness. Here's a sample RP permissions sheet, but feel free to customize your own with anything that's important:
- Code: Select all
My opponent may:
Choose my scorers? Y/N
Choose my box score stats? Y/N
Give out suspensions? Y/N
Give out ejections? Y/N
RP my players engaging in fights? Y/N
Godmode events? Y/N
There will be a daily RP bonus. Short news snippets will be posted at each daily RP cutoff, which will be posted at 0900 UTC.
At the end of the tournament, the Hannasean Federation will name an unofficial tournament MVP and an unofficial tournament Best-Of team.
OOC questions
If there are OOC questions or complaints, please post them in the WCoH discussion thread so that this thread may be kept clean for IC matters. Please do not post purely OOC posts in this thread.
Matchday 1 will be scorinated 27 August, 0900 UTC.
