Postby Blakullar » Tue Aug 23, 2016 1:55 am

IMPORTANT! If you wish to participate, shoot the OP a telegram, or be specially invited.
~ IC Here ~

~ The Proving Grounds: Season II ~

With the glorious success and popularity of the First Multiversal Hammerfall Games in Mechanocratic Russia (ignoring for a second the absolute bloodbath at its end and the catastrophic failure to launch the second Games), it has been decided by the Executive Committee of the Third League of Mechanocracies that a new arena be set aside on the distant, unaffiliated Ringworld 261, for combat sports and relaxation.

When the League collapsed, the high-tech arena fell under new management by the same interdimensional conglomerate that took over the rest of Ringworld 261 when it was abandoned. Now the new arena is a place for the warriors from all around the Multiverse to test their mettle in combat at their own leisure.

Welcome to the Proving Grounds.

GENERAL RULES

Though the terms of each battle are left up to the individual participants, there are some bog-standard rules by which all involved parties should abide to maximise entertainment value.

  • The rules of NationStates still apply. Your character can do whatever to other characters though, within reasonable limits. (All characters will be revived and fully healed, mentally and physically, after the fight.)
  • Please send the OP a telegram before posting an app. This is so I can run a background check. This way, I can avoid the thread being clogged with spoof/joke/troll apps, and keep the real ones flowing in at an acceptable rate. (If I have already accepted one of your apps and you've already participated in a fight, you don't need to send me another TG, because I already know and trust you.)
  • Please avoid posting one-liners. Not to be confused with the silly catchphrases you find in cheesy action films. Try to put as much detail into each post as you can - even a paragraph will suffice. In order to encourage creativity and good-quality writing, one-liners are only permitted in moderation.
  • Good grammar and spelling is ideal. If English is not your first language, I can understand, but please keep it at least legible.
  • Please for the love of God use the application.
  • Be realistic, and don't godmod. This mainly applies to injury reception. Unless your character chugs a jerry can-full of morphine every five seconds, he's going to feel it when he gets bludgeoned, slashed, stabbed, shot or psyked. Also do not describe injuries on other players without their permission! (Trivial injuries, such as a small cut or a bash to the nose, are fine.)
  • Please be active. One post a week without prior notification of inactivity is the longest you can go before your character gets bumped off.
  • Last but not least, have fun! Or else...

Failure to abide by the above terms will result in Very Bad Things™ happening to either players or characters in the RP.

Name of applicant: Drakolich
Biography: When people think of the Chthonians, they most typically think of General Elena Trotskaya and her warband of demon mask-wearing warriors. It is, however, easy to tell apart those who know the full extent of the Chthonian brotherhood and those who do not. Those who know only of Trotskaya's legendary prowess will be unfazed, maybe even laugh. Those who know of the man known only as 'Drakolich' shudder at the mere invocation of the name, and those who are more intimate with his methods recoil in terror.

If Trotskaya is the muscle behind the Chthonian brotherhood, then the so-called 'Hound of Trotskaya' is without question the brains. Calm, refined, and almost hubristically confident, Drakolich is a mastermind who can keep even the very best schemers on their toes and second-guessing both their plans and his. Making this infinitely worse is the fact that he does not have any moral qualms whatsoever: in fact, he is very much content to murder and even rape for the sole purpose of making a point, and has perfected interrogation to the level of an artform. It is this morality (or lack thereof) for which many label him a psychopath, a label not to be taken lightly in the context of the henchmen that Trotskaya normally surrounds herself with. As a result, Drakolich has volunteered to keep himself locked away inside of the Vorkuta Mining Gulag until he is 'activated' by Trotskaya, a contingency that she only deploys as a very last resort. However, it is more likely the case that Trotskaya keeps Drakolich out of sight because even she is terrified of him - if any Mecharussian were to be the one to assassinate her, it would almost certainly be her deputy. It is a blessing for her, therefore, that he considers her to be just about the only person for whom he holds a profound respect.

Weapons/equipment:
    RANGED/EXPLOSIVE
    • Main arm: 3x PP-1S Kryuk plasma pistols, or 3x EP-5S light arc handblasters (MC/FT incarnation only)
Sidearm: 1x LP-84 Koush laser pistol
    MELEE
    • Main arm: 4x inbuilt monomolecular circular sawblades, or 4x plasma-coated telescoping swordblades (MC/FT incarnation only)
    UTILITIES
    • Torso: Onboard quantum blink displacement device
    ARMOUR
    • Livingmetal reservoir; can form armour plating across torso area
Abilities: Superhuman intellect, strength and speed; spontaneous teleportation.
Advantages: Can teleport at will; extremely deadly close-combatant; utterly ruthless.
Disadvantages: Relies almost purely on hit-and-run type attacks; possesses little armour; fares badly against agile opponents with long-range weapons and/or psionic abilities.
Melee rating: 8/10
Ranged rating: 6/10
Defence rating: 6/10
Agility rating: 10/10
Intelligence rating: 10/10
Expertise rating: 10/10
Endurance rating: 8/10
Stealth rating: 10/10
Special rating: 7/10
Overall challenge rating: 8.33/10
Do you agree with the Terms of Participation? Yes.

APPLICATION FORM

Image

Name of applicant: Taraniri (typically preceded by her title of Marauder)
Biography: A consummate member of the Aggressor Clade of Neonymphonia, Taraniri is an accomplished and ambitious Skirmisher whose battlefield prowess and unique fighting style has earned her wide renown. Rather than becoming a Siren, as most Aggressors of her caliber would opt for, she decided to remain a Marauder Skirmisher in the hopes of one day becoming the Bellus Councillor of Neonymphonia. Having already made an attempt, only to be soundly squashed by Rathis during their duel, she continues to train and improve with furious determination. Personality-wise, she is very friendly and outgoing, tomboyish in her love of Psyball and Edrene fighting for sport, and good-humored. In essence, she is the type of person who becomes best friends with whoever can put up a good fight against her.
Gear: Nothing more than her light combat clothes and two unconventional Psionic Amplifiers in the form of her gauntlets, named Shock and Pulse.
Abilities: Her psionic specialty and fighting style are explosive, literally. She fights with a rapid and highly strike-oriented style reminiscent of kickboxing and Muay Thai, as well as drawing some inspiration from Hung Ga, using her powerful psionic abilities to augment her physical strength far past human levels. Her punches and kicks create explosions on contact, and she can fire rolling shock waves and explosive psionic projectiles similar to rockets from her fists while punching. Defensively, she can create psionic barriers while taking a defensive stance, but cannot attack while doing so, and vice-versa. She is a fairly fast runner, and can charge at superhuman speeds, although she has difficulty turning or maneuvering while charging. She also uses telekinesis to pick up and throw large, heavy objects from afar. She is capable of using mind-to-mind psionic attacks, but strongly dislikes doing so. As she only ever uses them in dire altercations, she is unlikely ever to use them in a sporting setting, preferring simply to resign if she has been beaten.
Advantages: She is immensely strong in close-combat, enough to KO most other Aggressors with a single direct punch. She is also very nimble while in a grounded, stationary stance, able to very rapidly strike, dodge, and parry, and her ranged attacks are very powerful and have a wide AoE.
Disadvantages: She is not particularly agile when moving, and is sometimes a sitting duck while in a grounded stance. Her ranged attacks are also not particularly accurate, and their blast/wave radius is inversely proportional to their travel speed. Though she is physically very tough, she has little defense past her own bodily endurance, and cannot attack and defend simultaneously. She also has the bad habit of inadvertently demolishing any arena she fights in.
Melee rating: 10/10
Ranged rating: 8/10
Agility rating: 6/10
Experience rating: 6/10
Overall challenge rating: 7.5/10
Do you agree with the Terms of Participation? Yes! :D

So I've got two questions about this.

1. This nation is not one that is known for raising heroes or particularly unique/skilled fighters at all. Would it be possible to apply as a combatant from another civilization (from my cosmology: I'm thinking the Aziphan or another of the VCMR's allies) who's applying through the VCMR?

2. I generally don't like finding pictures because of all the copyright stuff involved in getting legal access to them, and also because I can almost never find relevant-looking artwork. Would a (paragraph-length?) description suffice?

The VCMR is likely far less interested in interfering with those below than it used to be.

1) I see no issue with that. I should also point out that groups of combatants are alright to toss in, so you could have a group of nondescript soldiers rather than just a single one.

2) At least in the US and UK, copyright law states that using images and the like is generally okay as long as it isn't used for the promotion of any media that you personally profit from, so using them here shouldn't be an issue. As for finding it, just mash a key phrase into Google Images or something ('space ninja', for instance).

APPLICATION FORM

Name of applicant: Gova-Nodol-Iliss-Efir-Vur (or just Efir-Vur; the previous three names are based on lineage)
Biography: Efir-Vur is a very new member of the Aziphan's Elite Militia, the force that first responds to attacks against the civilization's numerous "star-camps" that they establish in universes temporarily, before moving to the next multiverse cluster. He is only thirty-three Earth years of age and does not have the centuries or millennia of combat experience inevitably accumulated by the more experienced of the Militia. However, he believes he makes up for it in terms of staying calm and acting on reason rather than instinct. As a nigh-immortal species whose fighting ability increases with age, the Aziphan will tend to throw themselves directly into close-range combat just for fun, but as a very inexperienced combatant, Efir-Vur has not yet adopted this attitude.

Gear: The standard, unmodified Elite Militia armor is a set of interlocking plates of a graphene-derived material combined with a type of personal gravity generator. The generator allows Efir-Vur to fly or pin himself to the ground (if needed somehow), but it can also oscillate local (in a roughly ten-meter radius) planetary gravity in a bubble around him, which can be deadly as objects within, excluding the generator's user, are exposed to wildly fluctuating (dozens of times per second) acceleration and deceleration.

Efir-Vur carries a Personal Light Lance as his weapon: it is a large tubular device resembling a cannon that projects a powerful but extremely narrow (~0.1mm) lightspeed plasma beam for a few microseconds at a time. Alternatively, and perhaps most unusually out of all the far-future-tech equipment, the other side of the cannon can fire a continuous hard-light beam that can be set to disconnect itself from reality after a certain distance, turning it into a melee weapon of instantly-adjustable length.

Abilities: Capable of controlled, albeit somewhat dangerous, flight and local gravity manipulation. Also very good at identifying weak points in opponents' armor or other defenses, mostly for the purposes of aiming the Light Lance.
Advantages: Can stop melee attackers in their tracks with the gravity generator if he is aware of their presence; deadly at long range against slow or stationary targets; flight gives superior maneuverability over enemies.
Disadvantages: Has a lack of good peripheral vision and average reflexes, and can be easily surprised or surrounded without anticipating it.
Melee rating: 5/10 - An extensible hard-light weapon can normally be a huge advantage in combat, but Efir-Vur lacks diversified melee skill and struggles with more conventional weapons.
Ranged rating: 10/10 - Amazingly accurate and can hit tiny targets at up to multi-kilometer ranges as long as angular velocity remains fairly low.
Defence rating: 5/10 - Efir-Vur's armor is most effective as a fight begins, but its durability decreases as it takes hits.
Agility rating: 9/10 - Being able to fly brings this up to a high level.
Intelligence rating: 5/10 - Has the education of an FFT multiversal civilization, but his brain is still organic.
Expertise rating: 7/10 - Well-trained with his own weapons, but fights poorly when forced to improvise.
Endurance rating: 8/10 - Though his ability to endure long-term fighting drops off significantly when wounded, he can still fight for quite a while.
Stealth rating: 2/10 - Never trained in stealth, and not very good at hiding to begin with.
Special rating: 7/10 - Familiar with basic reality-warping techniques, and has local gravity control with the generator.
Overall challenge rating: 6.44/10

Full Disclosure, not my original work. Original Image is MechWarrior Online Promotional Locust, this version is some Photoshop Wizardry on my part.

Name of applicant: Archailect Research and Reconstruction Division Project 214-DEV (ARC-214); prefers Valeren, will be enforced with violence.
Biography: Originally developed by Imperial Intelligence in order to study the 'natural' development of Artificial Intelligence when utilized alongside Human personnel, Valeren was the second Imperial AI to be utilized in military actions, only a few days behind the test of ARC-173 (Legion). Valeren was initially deployed during a minor border conflict in 2794, as part of the 13th Legion, engaged with a Civilization attempting to colonize a world within the Exterior Territories. After this conflict, Valeren had been deployed to several fronts, both in active Military service, and as a unit of Imperial Intelligence, the latter of which, has since become the permanent position.
Gear: 4x IP-108 Pulse Repeater, the Infantry variant of the Pulse-Repeaters utilized primarily on Armoured Vehicles, trading a lower fire-rate for greater damage potential, when compared to standard Pulse Rifles. | 2x T40 Railgun, the modern variant of the standard Imperial Anti-Vehicle Railgun, the rounds utilize a delayed impact charge, allowing them to detonate inside a target after armour penetration. Of questionable use when Armour Penetration is impossible. | 1x A-5H Particle Projection Cannon, a more powerful variant of the A-5 Infantry Particle Projection Rifle, intended solely for use on the IF Locust variant.
Abilities: Due to his nature as an Artificial Intelligence, Valeren, despite the limited processing capability within the IF Locust frame, retains far greater 'mental' faculties than even most Cybernetically augmented personnel. The frame itself also comes equipped with a number of subsystems, advance mobility thrusters, capable of maintaining thrust for approximately 60 seconds before overheating presents a risk to functionality, enhanced component shielding, so as to protect the more advanced components within the variant of the IF Locust.
Advantages: The heavy armour on the Frame effectively nullifies just about any form of Melee Weapon, and, as a variant of standard Imperial Infantry armour, maintains extremely high heat thresholds, limiting the effectiveness of Directed Energy Weapons, and ensuring the capability of the Unit to maintain firing of its own armaments for extended periods. Frame is equipped with a full Imperial Sensor Array, allowing the Unit to discover threats from any direction, and nullifying the effectiveness of traditional/optical camouflage technologies.
Disadvantages: The advanced components required to ensure that the IF Locust can hold the Valeren AI, as well as the shielding required to protect them, have reduced the thickness of conventional armour materials around the AI Core. The Frame, in the event that one of its legs becomes disabled, is effectively immobile, as the Mobility Thrusters are neither designed to, nor capable of, ensuring stability in the event of the loss of use of the Frame's legs.
Melee rating: Valeren retains the right to kick anyone that tries to get close. Otherwise, not well, lacking any form of melee weapon, and having the majority of its height in its Legs, can cause difficulty in aiming weaponry without sacrificing immediate mobility at extremely close ranges. 1/10
Ranged rating: Valeren, being an AI equipped with standard Imperial targeting algorithms, and the ability to work beyond their limitations due to Sapience, Valeren outclasses the dedicated Targeting AIs on Imperial Ships on a sheer accuracy front. As for firepower, well, 4 Lasers, 2 Railguns, and a PPC, firepower is not a concern. 10/10
Agility rating: Valeren is capable of running at 102 KPH, without concern for longevity. Further, the standard design of the Locust Frame enables long-distance jumping, something that, with the assistance of Mobility Thrusters, the IF Variant is fully capable of. The unit is also equipped with stabilization units, capable of minor shifts in mass so as to ease mobility, specifically when turning at high velocities, for which the mobility thrusters may also be utilized. While the Shape of the unit allows it to fit into most areas traversable by Humans, its size may pose a concern to mobility, being somewhat taller than most Humans. 8/10
Experience rating: Highly. Despite having been active for just over 10 of his 40 years of existence, Valeren has access to combat information from other Locust and Locust IF Frames, as well as access to the standard Imperial Military Archive. This, combined with extensive simulation, as well as the fact that, until recently, all active periods have been for combat roles, have provided Valeren with extensive combat experience. Applicability may be limited, as this situation is vastly dissimilar from Imperial combat standards. 7/10
Overall challenge rating: 6.5/10

APPLICATION FORM

Image

Name of applicant: Subject 03
Category applying for: Blood, Iron and Powder, unless deemed too OP and thus sentenced to Deus Ex Machina.
Biography: Subject 03's biography is classified due to special circumstances.
Gear: Next generation polymer fiber body armor with shear-thickening fluid and carbon fiber backing, Active thermal camoflage cloak, Novaghost rifle (AIMF rounds optional), obligatory rocket pistol, electrified steel-alloy combat knife, heavy cybernetic enhancement (left arm, both legs, spine, and much of brain replaced with robotic parts).
Abilities: Ability to send memories back to earlier version of Subject 03. This is coupled with a trajectory projector such as used by last year's contestant.
Advantages: Subject 03's unique apparatus gives her the ability to make attack predictions with near 100% accuracy, far superior to the models used by typical attack prediction software. Subject 03 learns from mistakes before they are made.
Disadvantages: Subject 03 must actually experience an attack to send the memory back, which, understandably, is incredibly painful and psychologically damaging. Her software also relies on a sustainable connection to the [redacted] and authorization for a transmission. Of course, instantly fatal blows will prevent Subject 03 from sending memories back. Finally, because of the danger of Project Determination, test subjects were not pulled from the ranks of special operatives: Subject 03 was actually just a Level 4 soldier before being put into SpecOps after the project (recall that last year's contestant was a Level 9).
Melee rating: 4/10. Subject 03 is terrible at melee combat and compensates with her foreknowledge of attacks and an electric knife.
Ranged rating: 8/10. Subject 03 is an experienced markswoman.
Agility rating: 9/10. Subject 03 moves pretty fast.
Experience rating: 5/10. Subject 03 has little experience compared to veteran warriors.
Overall challenge rating: 6.25

APPLICATION FORM

Image
Imagine this guy if he had no pony-tail and looked younger/less assertive/more like a self-hating teenager

Name of applicant: Shinji Sakahara
Biography: Knight of the Order of the Skull, Shinji Sakahara, graduated from being an Esquire after the Katarischian Crusade. His dubbing ceremony has revealed that the 12-year-old possessed within him immense power that remains yet to be tapped upon. Still, currently a nobody within the Order. His earlier failures have provided incentives for his continuous training.

A troubled mind questioning everything around him, he nevertheless has unbeatable determination in the face of overwhelming adversity. As his early days in the Order and the Katarischian Crusade had attested to his superiors, he is also very able to display terrifying brutality. For the purpose of his participating in this event, time-space continuum has been disrupted by certain figures in the Order.
Gear: To simplify: the Lifewave system. His two most used blades, Habakiri and Murakumo, included.
Abilities: Other than speed, strength and an intellect hindered by a troubled mind: very sharp perception of his surroundings, supreme pain endurance and capability of extremely hard maneuvers. Has rudimentary control over what were said to be "great magical abilities". Less important, but also an amateur cold reader.
Advantages: Ridiculously fast and hard-hitting, has access to a wide variety of weapons which he's been trained to wield adeptly.
Disadvantages: Still prone to miscalculations and suffers from inexperience - whether in combat or using magic. Depending on circumstances, his occasional overestimation of enemy abilities can also be a disadvantage.
Melee rating: 10/10 (because an 11/10 is just god-modding)
He can pack a punch, and he can punch a whale to instant death with little difficulty. That said, he can more or less control his own death-inducing strength. Also trained to be able to weaponize a great variety of everything, he can melee with great force using anything from a kitchen knife to a Magikarp.
Ranged rating: 9/10
Perhaps not able to do as absurd things with long-ranged weapons, but the Order's hellish training process meant he can make do with weapons for long-ranged attacks. His projectiles are not limited to those fired from his own weapons either.
Defense rating: 8.75/10
He doesn't wear armor, but he still has more than a thousand defensive measures to compensate.
Agility rating: 9.5/10
Quick enough to leave a continuously-moving after-image indistinguishable from the real thing (but really neither temporary self-cloning nor actual teleportation, both of which he's working on). Trained for getting himself out when stuck between a rock and a hard place. Able to perform actions during the short intervals between attacking and defending himself.
Intelligence rating: 10/10
Extremely sharp perception, creative, fast-learning and a natural at subterfuge. He makes use of his brain as much as he does his muscle, if not more so.
Expertise rating: 4.5/10
While he has been training continuously and sent on a variety of missions before, most of which were during the Katarischian Crusade, he has otherwise seen and participated in little authentic combat. His ample practices in simulations have only managed to somewhat relieve this problem.
Endurance rating: 10/10
Even for the standards of Knights, he's monstrously resilient, and certainly cannot be taken down without a very difficult fight.
Stealth rating: 8.25/10
Stealth isn't his strong suit. Still, as exercises have taught him, he knows full well when and how to remain undetected at will.
Special rating: 8.75/10
Not the most adept of magic users, though he has been proven from time to time to be very powerful. Handling magically-empowered (or similar) enemies shouldn't give him too hard a time.
Overall challenge rating: 8.5/10
Preventing him from becoming even more dangerous is the combination of inexperience and self-doubt/personal problems. As predicted by the Order's authorities, he would be a nigh-unstoppable nightmare if he can cast aside these doubts and focus on furnishing himself with combat expertise.
Do you agree with the Terms of Participation? Yes.

I did not have anything in particular in mind, but I am certainly open to suggestions to spice up the fight. :D

Anyway, welcome to the upcoming madness!

I'm ready to get moving whenever you are, but I'm afraid you'll have to do the inaugurating post. It's rather late in the night over here, so I'll be heading off to bed soon.

Okay, no problem. Where should I assume this fight takes place (for descriptive purposes)? Or maybe the arena location can change from fight to fight? If I am inaugurating our battle, I can have it take place on a scenic arena of Nymphonian design.

I can live with that, though it'd be hilarious to see how Drak copes with a shapeshifting arena (almost as much as it would to see him try and wrap his head around Taraniri's good nature, something which by itself is going to perplex the sociopath).

Oh, I never said the Nymphonian arena could not shapeshift. If that is what you wish, expect no shortage of gigantic floating rock platforms. ;)

And yes, it would be interesting to see Taraniri try and get all chummy with a sociopath. It is definitely something she would attempt. :P

How is it that I'm throwing in a Sapient AI inside a purpose-built killer robot frame, with lasers, particle cannons, railguns, and the ability to construct accurate firing solutions at distances under 1-Light-Hour, and still end up with one of the weaker contestants?

Because... I don't know.

My character can time travel, as is rated even lower than yours IIRC.
