The Fall of a Republic (IC)

OOC: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=387610

March 23, 6:56 pm. Prometheus, Byzanthia

Charles stood looking out at the sunset, admiring the pink fluffy clouds and the soft murmur of cars whizzing past. In the distance, he could see the burnt remains of the Federal Senate. As damaged as it was, construction workers could be heard moving rubble and searching for any trapped people, to insure that the area was clear for building again. Earlier that day, Charles had received two unmarked letters, which he had yet to reveal to the Federal Council. Life had returned to normal, for the most part. Aside from the fact that most of the Senators in the Federal Senate were dead, life went on. After the rather abrupt disappearance of Borris, the Federal Government officially declared him dead after investigations revealed nothing. The Prime Minister suspected that one of the letters was from Borris, and he had good reason to think that the one with the "gift" was the one from him. The other, Charles thought, was a letter sent by the government of Significance as an excuse for his actions. Whether or not Borris was alive or not remained to be seen. Despite the fact that Byzanthia had remained neutral throughout this entire conflict, Byzanthia was now on the radar of many nations in the world, especially Significance. Byzanthia, of course, did not know this. The government was too peaceful and ignorant to see this. But one day in the foreseeable future, Byzanthia will be attacked, and it will fall. And that is most positively guaranteed to happen. For now, Byzanthia is safe, but it has entered a whole new dangerous world in which it will fall prey too...

The end...for now

Present day. Prometheus, Byzanthia

In the past couple of months since Significance attempted to infiltrate the Greater Byzanthian Federal Government and stage a government coup, Greater Byzanthia has crumbled at a remarkable rate. The terrorist attack on the Federal Senate crippled the integrity of the nation, and ended up killing key political figures. In the wake of the attacks, Greater Byzanthia quickly realized that the world was not as kind as they thought it to be. In the end, Greater Byzanthia would fall to another, more powerful nation. But the question was: who would it be, and when?

"Got the New Language law in to effect, aided some country... What to do next?" muttered John Mursh, slowly walking to his computer. He knew that he might find something on the various lists on his computer, placed randomly to boggle anyone who didn't know what they were looking for. "Hmm, this country seems to be rapidly crumbling. I wonder why." He said to himself, scrolling down the page. "Oh, a coup killed most of their goverment. And they blamed someoe for it! Hah. I guess we might be sending troops their. Might fix things, and hopefully better then what the Americans did in Iraq."

Two Hours Later.
"Load the Humvee, and remember to attach it! I dont need to tell you what happened last time!" Colonel Mark Huve shouted, prepping his pistol. "Sir, don't we need permission to go into a country by those countries rulers?" Private Jim Hensen shouted back, cleaning his standard issue AR-10. They had just gotten the order an hour and a half ago to get equipment and men ready for a flight to a far-off country. "There is no goverment that we are aware of there anymore, atleast not a stable one." The Colonel said, walking past Jim. The Colonel thought, Ten minutes and we'll be shipped out to an unstable region.

The Prime Minister knew that his nation was falling. And despite his best efforts to remedy the government's imminent collapse, it would be of no avail. There were multiple nations in the world that were poised to take over Byzanthia at a moment's notice, ready to absorb whatever remained of their puny nation that was too weak to even defend their own citizens. Coupled with the nation's neutrality, the Prime Minister knew that Greater Byzanthia would not stand against foreign attack. New Jersey's misinterpretations of the situation continued to make the every-increasingly degenerative circumstances turn ever more sour. Most Byzanthians feared that New Jersey would only make matters worse, but kept this opinion to themselves to protect whatever little protection the nation had. Even the slightest comment could be enough to start a war. In the meantime, Byzanthia would wait for New Jersey to arrive, and in doing so, would meet with their commander to discuss the worsening situation in Byzanthia.

"Dropping in 5 seconds, hook on!" John Mursh watched from a video screen as Para-Troopers hooked onto the bar. "They'll be the first troops we put down there, maybe the last to come out." He muttered. Not much had changed from yesterday, he told himself. The para-troopers started jumping out of the plane. They had sacks of everything they could need, food, water, explosive ordnance, ammunition. Everything they need..

Dan Kurst started falling down to the Earth. He made sure nothing was falling off him, and then started laughing. He loved the thrill of the ride. A radio came in, "Acquire a base camp so the ground troops can get in, preferably an Airport. Godspeed!" he listened to it. It sounded like one of High Ranking Slootches. He then realized he needed to open the para-pack soon or he would die! He quickly yanked the cord, allowing for the circular parashoot to slow him down dramatically.

Ten Minutes later.

"Listen up! We need to find an area we can base operations to get the airport." Dan whispered to a group of 20 other Para-Troopers. He was using the new language put in place, so no one from this local area could understand them. Dan got a clip from his pack and loaded his AR-10. The rest did the same. Dan started walking to the back door of a house, along with the rest. They silently, or as silent as they could be, breached the door. Luckily for them, the rest of the doors were unlocked. Dan and half of the men entered one of the doors in the building, while the rest entered the other way. He could hear some talking. He listened closer and realized there was two people. Dan opened the door and had his gun traced on one person, while the rest had theirs traced on either one. "What the hell!" He heard the first person scream, a girl, in her native tongue. The other on was silent, but put his hands up. "Anyone know what language they speak?" Dan asked his comrades. They said no. At this time the girl had grabbed onto the man. "Someone radio the rest of the Paras to meet here or clear other buildings. We'll wait for more orders." Dan said..

Two arguing hours Later
"You weren't supposed to take any building! You were supposed to drop into the countryside and clear an area for the planes to land!" The Current Commander of the Paratroopers screamed through the video screen. "You may have just caused a damned war!" He ordered them to let the civilians go, and head to the countryside and clear the land. All they had were spades..

At first, officials were skeptical to believe that New Jersey would be one to suddenly "attack" an unsuspecting country. And to somehow break into a house for whatever reason and terrorize its inhabitants was virtually unheard of. Unfortunately, the residents spoke German, rendering communication with the intruders impossible.

The respondents to the 001 (911 in Byzanthia) call were surprised to learn that a full brigade of armed soldiers had broken into her home. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that no military personnel were stationed in the area. In no time at all, the Bureau of Civil Protection and Defense was ordered to send in a squadron of armed police officers to counter what appeared to be a terrorist attack. Soon enough, the area surrounding the house was covered in police cars, ambulances, and helicopters, along with soldiers equipped with outdated military equipment (Byzanthia is more focused on peace and war, therefore the military has not received many upgrades).

"What the hell are we going to do now!" Dan yelled, obviously nervous. The radio sparked to life "Any trapped unit, you can not get out of there safely. If you try to surrender, a full force-" the radio crackled, then started to be clear again "Sorry for that, wrong script. Wave a New Jersey Flag outside, but if they fire at you, fire back." Dan was still nervous but told one of his men to do it. Only time would tell..

After discovering that the intruders were not present inside the house, and after interviewing the residents about the whereabouts of their intruders, the BCPD concluded that the "army" was located somewhere in the countryside. A five mile perimeter was set up from the home, with patrols sent out to find the soldiers. After five hours of seemingly fruitless investigating, an officer spotted armed men stationed in the countryside. After concluding that the weaponry and clothing utilized by the soldiers were foreign, he radioed the rest of his task force to report to his location. ANd without a sound, they did. Hiding behind the tall grasses, the armed men were observed until they were deemed to not be hostile. Upon further observation, the armbands and symbolism on the outfits worn were determined to be that of New Jersey. Martin Waldfogel, the highest ranking there, then came to the decision to formally make their existence known. WIth four soldiers behind him, he made his way to the camp. Upon entering, he cleared his throat, and stated in a loud voice: "Good evening gentlemen. I find that you have acquainted yourselves with our nation. Unfortunately, we must put you under arrest for illegally crossing our borders and terrorizing our citizens. Of course, those are not the exact charges, but they will be explained in fuller detail once we arive in Prometheus. Now then, if you would please come with me". At that moment, the rest of the BCPD emerged, along with multiple SUVs that would be used as transport.

"Go get Dan" a private said to his comrade in the new tongue "Get the rest the leave to." He then turned to the Officer. He started speaking giberish to give them more time to get out.

"What the hell happened!" Dan said, packing up his stuff, getting the two SCVs they had ready. Most of the soldiers had already gotten onto the car, hosting 20 more soldiers the normal. It wasn't really affecting the SCVs. Dan got in one, while a equally high ranking officer got in the other one. They started up the engine, heading away to a new DP. "Radio the HQ to the new DP and tell em' to use Helis instead of planes." Dan said, still wondering what happened. Well, of they went.

The windows of the SUVs were blacked both on the inside and outside, with the transparency of them controlled by a remote possessed by the driver. For the duration of the ride, the windows remained blackened, leaving the intruders-turned-diplomats in dark about where exactly they were heading. The Prime Minister himself had been briefed on the situation, and had ordered the soldiers be brought to the Federal Palace (the residence and workplace of the Prime Minister) for further investigation. Contrary to what they had been told, the soldiers were not, in fact, under arrest. They were actually allowed into Byzanthia, while under the constant surveillance of BCPD. The whole situation was actually a test of sorts, to see if the New Jersey meant harm or not. It was a risky operation, and many government officials frowned upon the fact that many lives could be put in jeopardy by it. Nevertheless, the "experiment" went forward. Once things began to get out of hand, a division of the BCPD responded and attempted to track down the soldiers. Upon finding them, they were ordered by the Prime MInister to bring them directly to him. And so, the SUVs rolled silently under the large portico of the palace.

Yul system, M13 supercluster
-6,000 light years above the plane of the Milky Way
Two days prior to arrival

Sylvia brooded over the consoles of her ship's command center. The young lady, a hybrid between an anthro wolf and a anthro vixen had been ordered to jump somewhere outside Ecumene territory without her fleet. While the Ascendacy, a precious Forerunner Planet-Breaker was a very powerful ship, Sylvia held reservations about taking it into unknown territory without it's fleet to back her up. She'd even petitioned the Lord of Admirals himself....but all she got was permission to hold the fleet in reserve. It was clear they did'nt see the threat in an unknown system. Sylvia eventually came to accept this, though she found it unbecoming of her Fleetmaster rank.

"Jump the Ascendacy to these coordinates. Scans indicate intelegent life and maybe civilization. Do it now."

The Forerunner vessal opened a large Jumpspace Rupture- a portal into the realm that made superluminal travel possible. The ship entered this and then disappeared.

Current time, Lunar orbit, Earth

The exit portal was obvious. All Jumpspace rifts were.....it was something that could not be helped, even by the advanced technology of the Ecumene. The ship emerged from the rift slowly on the night side of the planet. After it did this, Sylvia opened the massive blast doors over the command center, a barrier going up to prevent decompression. From here, Sylvia could see the lights of the planet's cities. She also noticed other things....that there was little presence in space. This indicated to her that the civilization was still young...and likely at Tier 3. The large Forerunner vesssal slowly began to approach the planet.

8:23 pm. Federal Bureau of Aeronautics and Space Exploration Headquarters, Prometheus

Something was wrong with the sky. And Byzanthia didn't know what to do. Of course, that was a defining characteristic of the nation; after all, it almost always encountered problems that it couldn't solve. This, along with many other thoughts, drifted around in the head of Jonathan Hochberg, Director of the FBASE. The Bureau had been put into a frenzy by the event, with many speculating that the ship that suddenly appeared in a split second could be of extraterrestrial origin. Indeed, its design looked nothing like that of traditional Byzanthian rockets, and mathematicians approximated its length to be almost taller than the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Jonathan was in deep thought about what to do, when an officer approached him.

"Sir, the only means of communication that we are technologically capable of is television and radio. From what we can see, these..."aliens" possess technology that surpasses us by centuries. Do you wish to proceed?"

He thought for a moment. Surely, such a thing as this should be done by the Prime Minister. After all, he is the face of the nation. "I want the Prime Minister to be here to do it. I am in no position to make diplomatic contact with the aliens."

"Very well sir. We shall contact him immediately".

The Prime Minister was about to hold a private meeting with the soldiers from New Jersey, but was quickly rushed to the headquarters of the FBASE. In an address televised to the whole world (and the spaceship), Charles stated:

Greetings, fellow beings. I am Charles Burgardt, Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Greater Byzanthia. I do not speak to you as a representative of my nation, but as a representative of humankind. I hope that however primitive our means of communication be, that you will someday be able to make contact with us. I am eager to perhaps meeting your species, and hope that we may peacefully coexists alongside each other for many years to come.

Tunis, Greater Byzanthia

Christian Wachter leaned back in his chair, enjoying the warm sunlight that shone down on him. An ice cold glass of Tunisian mint tea was in his hand; Christian was currently lounging on the patio of a restaurant here in Tunis, sipping his tea and gazing across the street at the police station. A pair of dark sunglasses concealed his icy blue eyes, so no one would know that he was surveying the Byzanthian installation. Yes, Wachter certainly stood out here with his cold blue eyes, platinum blond hair and pale Nordic skin- well, after all these days in Tunis, it was tanned much darker than its original pigment. Officially he was here as a tourist, but that was a lie. Christian Wachter was an operative of the Stoßschutz Geheime Staatliche Nachrichtendienste- a mouthful, that was for sure(it was usually abreviated to SSGSN). In short, he was a Capilean spy.

Wachter was a longtime agent of the SSGSN, and he along with hundreds of other individuals had been scattered across Byzanthian North Africa to glean as much information about the place as possible. And Christian had been doing very well. So far he had recorded the patrol habits, equipment, and officers of the military base in Tunis and sent it all back to Nova Capile. Why was he here? It was obvious to anyone. Nova Capile craved Byzanthia's sprawling colony; it was their gateway to the Mediterranean. And so Wachter was building up his countries' information on the territory, so that an invasion could be executed much more efficiently. If required, Christian might even be ordered to sabotage something- and risk his life in the process. All was good and well to him; a hefty reward awaited him back home once he completed this mission.
Capilean News (Updated 16 November)
Where is the horse gone? Where the warrior?
Where is the treasure-giver? Where are the seats at the feast?
Where are the revels in the hall?
Alas for the bright cup! Alas for the mailed warrior!
Alas for the splendour of the prince!
How that time has passed away, dark under the cover of night, as if it never were.

Forerunner Planet-Breaker -Sylvia's Flagship-
Earth orbit

The ship had by now closed it's distance with the planet and was now orbiting it. Outside, the hull reconfigured....from it's current state to an aerodynamic one. As the communications reached her, it confirmed to Sylvia what she was dealing with. The ship raised it's shields, the hardlight barriers shimmering above the hull plating as the ship entered the planet's atnosphere. The entry was smooth for those aboard it and soon, it was sailing through the upper atnosphere towards the source of the communication. Sylvia waiting untill the ship was over Greater Byzanthia before trying to raise the nation with an audio and visual hail. They would be able to both see and hear her on any device tuned to the right frequency.

This is Fleetmaster Sylvia Xi Leng, commander of the Imperial Fleet of Holy Reconciliation. The ship you see is my personal flagship. I have held my fleet in reserve in the hopes that peaceful contact might be made. I will consent to a meeting at a place of your choosing to begin this meeting. I will not attack this nation unless you attack me first.

15 August, 2016. 1800 hours.

"Greater Byzanthia is a nation with a common heritage. We have similar values and I'm sure most of us Germans could find a distant cousin among the rubble of the Byzanthian streets. It is no place for children right now, but I feel it is our duty, as a common people, to sweep up the grime left by the nation's last few months of unrest and allow their kids to play in the front yard again. I ask that you contact your Senator and implore them to vote yes for this military peace-keeping campaign and allow our service members to continue their service to the Byzanthian people. We live in an unfair world that needs strong leaders on the world stage. We have the resources, the resolve, and the right people to lead the fight against suffering. Thank you."

Chancellor Fegelein, the head of state of the Land of Germany, nodded at the camera and then stepped out of frame. The news anchor took back the broadcast and tried to recap the Chancellor's remarks. "For those just tuning in, the Chancellor gave a short speech on our current, small-scale efforts in Greater Byzanthia. He has presented a plan to the Reichstag to extend and expand our presence in the territory, citing a common heritage and our similar values as a motivation to continue military peace-keeping operations.

The Chancellor stepped behind the curtain, away from the press room. He reached out and an aide placed a glass of water in his hand.

"How was it?" he asked.

The Assistant Defense Minister nodded, "I was convinced."

20 August, 2016. 1300. The Reichstag, Berlin.

"Order! Order! The Reichstag will now vote on the Chancellor's military plans in Greater Byzanthia. Yeas and Nays are mandatory under the procedure of the Reichstag. The Clerk will call the roll."

The Senators began to call out their votes. The Constitutional Party was consistent with the Yeas, with a few Nays. The Republican Party voted unanimously Yea and the Liberty Party and the Social Party voted unanimously Nay. All in all, the motion passed with a large margin and was approved by the Reichstag.

22 August, 2016. 0300. Northern border of Greater Byzanthia.

"Conquest 6, this is Conquest 1-1, crossing border at 27,000 feet. Break."

The pilot of the lead A400M motioned at the radio officer. He pointed at the screen, specifically to the altitude indicator.

"Correction. 31,000 feet. Over."

The mission controllers back in Berlin received and acknowledged the mission. From that point, the ten aircraft were an autonomous force with no need or authorization to use long-range radios to minimize the chance their objective was found. The German Army had 900 soldiers in the cargo of the ten aircraft, along with a few Puma infantry fighting vehicles.

"All callsigns, this is Conquest 1-6, jump is in five mikes. Over."

The commander of the squadron of planes accounted for each plane over the radio and each were ready to drop their payload. The five minutes passed quickly for the men in the rumbling, turboprop aircraft. The red light flickered in the darkness of the bay as the ramps of each plane lowered in sync. At 31,000 feet, the thin air wailed through the cargo area and the red lights flashed against the ice particulates in the atmosphere. The red light disappeared as the green bulb began to burn.

With a great sense of urgency, the men marched out of the planes. The IFVs pummeled the air as they dropped from the aircraft. Not a word was spoken the whole time, each paratrooper knew exactly what to do without instruction. That all happened many years ago in airborne school.

As each one hit the ground, they checked for injuries and gathered their parachutes. The last IFV to reach the ground strayed too far from the intended landing zone and managed to land on top of a private. Luckily, he himself landed in a slight dip in the ground and wasn't crushed by the Puma.

The first platoon leader made a radio call, "Surge 6, this is Surge 1, all troops and equipment are green. Over." The Commander of the inserted company of troops answered, "All Surge call signs, our mission is a go. Maintain formation integrity and get to the preplanned operational rally point. Out."

The men stood and began to march onwards, closer to the capital of the nation they hoped to protect. More troops would be coming soon, they knew, but the first wave had to make a silent entrance. The special forces and embedded foreign affairs agents would need to work in the dark before the bigger plan could unravel.

"Another country has landed into Byzanthia. I suggest we land more troops in using Air Cavarly." Said John Mursh to the leaders of all the branches. They where on the new NJN Hellena, the old USS New Jersey remade into a carrier. "But what about the last soldiers to land? They got taken hostage." The Lead-Admiral Bob Curry said, drinking some coffee. "We could tell them to resist any containment, and to fire on any hostile forces." All other men said Aye, and the order was given to send them out.

"Land, -031 -305." A pilot said, typing it. Ten Soldiers got ready, loading their AR-10s and uncocking the safety. Twenty other Helicopters were doing the same thing, albeit landing in slightly different areas. The doors opened and a thud happened, sparking the dreary soldiers to life. They hopped out, and headed to the road, where Three chinooks were dropping SCVs. They loaded in and continued into the capital.

COMMUNIQUE OFFICIALIS IN MAGNA BYZANTHIAN PRO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE ON THE BEHALF OF THE GREATER BYZANTHIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

FEDERAL MINISTERIO FOREIGN NEGOTIIS | FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

To: The Government of New Jersey
From: Charles Burgardt, Prime Minister of Byzanthia

Message:

Your soldiers are not in hostage. While it may appear that way, they have been located to a secure location within the palace to ensure their survival. They will be returned to your nation. Currently, the "thing" above our nation appears to be a space ship here on a diplomatic mission to make contact with the human race. They are peaceful, and do not intend to start any wars or conflicts. I intend to hold a meeting in Prometheus between your government and mine, including your soldiers. This is not an interrogation, but more of a way for our nations to get to know each other. I hope to hear from you soon.

Signed,

- His Excellency, Prime Minister Charles Burgardt
- The Honorable Christoph Schroeter, Minister-President
- Oskar Warner, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Men and women screamed in terror as the soldiers continued to march towards the capital. While most of the government was still transfixed on what appeared to be humanity's first encounter with aliens, the military was still on high alert. As soon as the BCPD heard of soldiers landing near the capital, the bureau ordered a large battalion of soldiers into the area. Soon after, they broke up into multiple groups, attempting to find the soldiers. Upon finding a group of them, a uniformed officer picked up his megaphone and stated: "Greeting from the Byzanthian Federal Government. We apologize for what looked like capturing your soldiers. However, we must state that you did enter our nation without permission. We allowed you to continue your progression, but that was halted after your terrorized a family. We then took them to our capital to explain the situation. We planned on telling your government after briefing your soldiers, but "the object in the sky" has delayed our efforts." He then motioned his men and women to put down their guns. "I invite your nation's leaders to Prometheus to talk about our current situation".

Official statement from Neu Gibraltar

Greetings, fellow nations. My name is President Vidi Vidi, but you can simply call me Vidi.

I was very concerned on hearing about our friend Significance, being said to be involved in the destruction of a nation's government, and we are of course looking into this. However, of greater concern now, and why I am writing this, is the apparent bandwagon of nations either jumping to fight or protect Byzanthia. As a peace loving nation, we hope to avoid this likely clash, that would, we believe, wipe out millions of innocent lives.

Therefore, we invite all of you, to send representatives to our country to discuss a peaceful solution to this current problem. These representatives will of course be allowed a small ensemble of guards to protect them if it would make them feel safer, but hope to avoid any conflict. The meeting itself will be in the Bermuda hotel, where guests will also have free accommodation during the meeting. I myself will be attending, and hope to see many nations arrive. Also, any transportation needs can be arranged by simply asking.

A second smaller point I wish to discuss is aid to Byzanthia. While the type of aid required can be discussed, we would like to point out that for our aid workers safety, they be escorted by the volunteer defence force, or VDF for short. The VDF is run completely by volunteers, with charity raised money. They are both our defence force, and peacekeeping operatives. We hope they are allowed to their duties, but if you need to keep an eye on them, feel free too, and if they cause any trouble, contact us to hopefully sort it.

We hope in our own small way to help the world through our actions, and wish a good day to all.
Signed, President Vidi Vidi.

EIN Ascendacy
Forerunner Planet-Breaker -Sylvia's Flagship-
Earth orbit

The ship rapidly decreased it's altitude unti it was less then two hundred feet above the tallest buildings in the capitol. Here, the hull partly dematerialized to reveal a hangar, from which a dropship emerged, escorted by two Forerunner Gunships emerged and headed to the nearest suitable facility, which was revealed after the Forerunner vessal visibly scanned the city. Sylvia emerged from this craft flanked by a pair of Promeathean Knights upon the craft's landing.

After officials ensured that the New Jerseyan soldiers were comfortable and acquainted for the meeting, the Prime Minister, along with his guards and the Federal Council walked out onto the Federal Plaza to greet the extraterrestrial starship. It had conveniently landed in front of the Federal Palace, the residence of the Prime Minister. Upon touching down, members of the Federal Guard, dressed in ceremonial uniform, saluted as the "aliens" began to disembark. The Prime Minister then stepped forward, extended his hand, and stated, "Welcome to Byzanthia. I'm sorry for such a short greeting, but I think that we will be able to exchange proper introductions at the meeting. If you would, please follow me." He then motioned the aliens towards an armored SUV.
