Band of Brothers: 1914

The IC Thread has been posted, so have at it people!
Intro

Thousands of young men were standing in line to enlist. The newspapers had been all over it for weeks, with the Archduke assassinated, the world had gone into full blown war. The Balkan states had been attacked, which brought in Russia. Then Germany was brought into the fold as well as France and England. Forces were being prepared as the Germans entered Belgium, their plan was to take France swiftly. Though they didn't think the Belgian's would have put up such a fight as they had done. This slowed their advance down a bit and gave the allies time to mobilize their forces. Many of the soldiers believed that the war would be over my Christmas. But they were soon going to see that it was not going to be an easily fought victory or as glorious as they had envisioned. Many would not return home after the war, new weapons were developed that changed the very course of warfare. A bitter and bloody war was about to start, a war that was thought to be the war to end all wars.

Hello P2TM, Welcome to Band of Brothers: 1914! The Rp will follow Abrams Company, a new company of fresh recruits in the BEF (British Expeditionary Forces). The RP will start at the battle of Mons and I would love to be able to go through all the years of the war. Granted we will see if that happens and if people want to do that, we would have to set up a time frame or something to allow us to get through the years. I haven't really seen many RPs like this around for awhile, let alone following an English Company in World War 1. So this is as much as an experiment for me as well as the community. So like I said, this will follow Abrams Company, fresh recruits who had just arrived in Mons a day before the attack begins. Now we are sticking strictly to history with major events. Smaller events we can add in, but they will more likely be a small skirmish that really doesn't do anything to tip the scales of the war. Now, your characters can die in battle and get wounded. I want to make this as realistic as possible, again minus the small events that I will throw in there.

Rules
1. Have fun
2. My word is law and so is my Co-OP
3. As stated before you can die or get wounded
4. Everything is allowed, though keep racism, sexism and such strictly to the IC.
5. If you have a disagreement with a player take it to TGs and not in the OOC thread.
6. Try to keep your actions and weapons as realistic as possible.

Character APP
Name: John Liam
Age: 26
Birth Place: Oxfordshire, England
Rank: Captain
Appearance: John[/img]
Role:Commanding Officer
Equipment: Webley revolver
Bio: John was born in a small village in Oxfordshire, his father worked for the local government. While he did this, he managed to make a few friends in higher places and obtained a few favors as well. John from a young age was very average, average build and average intelligence. But he always wanted to a challenge no matter how hard or how long, he wanted to be challenged and if he failed so be it. At the age of 9 he was sent to an all boys school, there he was taught how to fire a weapon, clean and basic leadership skills. Though he did well in his studies, he much preferred to put his skill to real life situations. After several months, a bully at the school was picking on one of his friends. So he took matters into his own hands, he confronted the bully and beat the kid. The bully and John were both kicked from the school, John then went to a small local school near his home til he was 17.

At the age of 17, he enlisted in the army. He figured if he had been trained at combat skills, he might as well put them to use. Once his father had realized what he was going to do, he pulled a few favors from the government reaching as high as parliament. He pulled a few strings to get John promoted to Captain at the age of 19. He spent his first two years as a lowly grunt not receiving much attention. But after that, he soared through the ranks thanks to the favors his father had pulled. When he was told that he was going to lead Abrams Company, he took the challenge head on and couldn't wait. Shortly after receiving his Company, he received word that War broke out and they were soon going to be sent off to Mons.

Does it have to be realistic as to gender, or is it male only?

Were flamethrowers around in 1914 and could I have a flamethrower character if that was the case?

realistic gender, equipment and actions lol it would have to been possible at that time.

Eclixia wrote:Were flamethrowers around in 1914 and could I have a flamethrower character if that was the case?

Yes, but it wasn't really used on the allies side til the Battle of Somme. So I would say do something else then you can switch over to a flamethrower once we get to that point.

Character APP
Name:
James Swinburn
Age:
20
Birth Place:
Portsmouth
Rank:
Private
Appearance:
Average height for a youthful young man, slightly skinny, brown eyes and dark brown hair, pale skin.
Role: (riflemen, MG operator and so forth)
Rifleman
Equipment:
A standard issue Lee-enfield rifle, flare gun, knife and a shovel.
Bio: (two paragraph minimum)

Born into a working class family of three children, James grew up in an industrial city filled with busy shipyards, chimneys belching black fumes and cramped living conditions in terraced houses in rows of hundreds. His house was in a part of Portsmouth known for crime, and when he was confronted by a man with a knife in a dark alley one night with his two brothers, he beat him to death with a pipe before calmly returning home for the night. He went to an authoritarian state school, half an hour walk from his house, and so he got used to a lack of sleep and constant exhaustion that was part of his life. However, he did what he was told and obeyed the rules of the school and rarely got into any trouble with its teachers or the headmaster, and came back with a set of promising results each year from his annual tests as he progressed through primary and into secondary school, finding a job with his father at a shipbuilding company at the age of 16 when all other prospects of other work failed.

Now comfortably working on the Royal Navy's latest dreadnoughts and seaplane tenders coming in from their offices in London, James continued to feed his family and began dating a girlfriend, Jane, who was part of another family working on the railways just out of town. During this time, he became determined to join the Royal Navy and serve aboard the very ships he was tasked with building with his company. Shipbuilding was very much a dead end for James and he felt increasingly unsatisfied with his life, looking forward to serving with the British Empire in the defence of his country. However, as dreadnought after dreadnought was being ordered and then launched down the slipway where he worked, he knew something big was coming. An opportunity to get out of this job and into a new life.

When Britain declared war on the Central Powers to respect their treaty with Belgium, James didn't hesitate to sign up to the Army. In fact, he was the first one in the recruiting office, wrestling other men to get to the front of the queue. The newspapers wanted him to. His family wanted him to. His country wanted him to. His God wanted him to. He was sent to the front immediately.

TAKEN FROM 'FASCISM'S RISE'

10 Downing Street, London

Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald sat down at his oak desk and inspected the various documents laid out before him. However, reports from the Admiralty on their new plans for battleships and the movements of Japan in the Far East could wait - for the first thing he saw on the table was the Daily Telegraph's front page, 'ADOLF HITLER VOTED INTO POWER IN GERMANY'. Reading through the article, Ramsay didn't know what to think of the new leader - would he try to challenge us or unite with us? However, the Prime Minister knew that the new Chancellor, whatever his aims, would be a concern and would need monitoring to ensure he did not challenge the Kingdom or her empire. However, he could debate to himself over this new Chancellor later, as the growing crisis in Spain needed his attention. Oh yes, the so-called Great Depression. He could worry about the frightening unemployment and economic growth figures later. He had an entire day to do that.

As far as he knew, the fighting in Spain was between two sides - the Republicans (who were in turn backed by anyone from anarchists to liberals) which supported the current government, and the Nationalists, right-wing anti-communists (which prompted most of the fascist and far right to join them) which had attempted a coup on the current government. MacDonald new that if he decided to go to war, throwing the entire might of the British Empire behind one cause would either bring a swift end to the war or escalate the conflict to an international bloodbath similar to the Great War. He decided that he was to bring the discussion up in the House of Commons later, and see what his party had to say on the matter of the 'Spanish Civil War'. That, and this Hitler chap, too. Now, the Admiralty. What do they want?

Ramsay was proud of his country. But beneath the politics, the days sitting behind a desk skimming through paperwork, speaking in Parliament and leading the Empire, he feared one thing - British military might being challenged. And that was what concerned him the most about Hitler.

He heard muffled knocking on the door in front of him, and then glanced up from the latest report from the Admiralty to see the Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Frederick Field in impeccable Admiral's suit, come in and shut the door behind him.

'Please take a seat, Admiral.'

'Thank you, sir...' Field replied, taking a chair and seating himself, placing the documents he was carrying in the last spare space on the desk.

'That's where my morning tea goes, but nevermind.'

Sir Frederick was about to apologise and remove his paper but the Prime Minister's smile convinced him otherwise.

'Prime Minister, I would like to inform you of the Admiralty's plans to build a new battleship class in person.' the Admiral said, firmly. 'Despite the current economic situation, reinforcing British naval might will require new warships to be secured.'

'Request denied.' the PM replied, sternly. 'I assure you we have enough aging, sluggish and overwhelmingly expensive iron ducks in our fleet. I would like to turn your attention to the new Chancellor of Germany of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, and you and I both know that socialism leads to communism.

The two men, hailing from the upper classes of British society, shuddered at the thought of communist revolution, and despised it.

'Yes, what would you like to say about Adolf Hitler?' asked the Admiral.

'U-boats' the PM replied, gravely, remembering the damage the German U-boat fleet did against both warships and civilian ships throughout the war. He feared this would happen again.

'U-boats. Sir, all the senior figures in the Navy believe that we are more than capable of handling a U-boat threat based off our experience from the Great War. Whatever the German U-boats do to us I take full responsibility for in the future.' Sir Frederick's confidence was clear.

'Very well. What is this new battleship class you are discussing? Is it feasible in such an economic environment?'

Sir Frederick gave the Prime Minister a thorough description of the new battleship, the Queen Elizabeth I class, drawing many diagrams, notes and sketches of the new warship. However, the Prime Minister was not convinced, and his thoughts were evident on his face.

'Concerns, sir?'

'Where's the aircraft carrier?'

'The aircraft carrier?' Sir Frederick's face was confused on the Prime Minister's seemingly random question.

'Sir, I insist, battleships are the capital ship and forever will be. Carriers are far too fragile and expensive in open combat.'

Despite knowing that the Admiral of the Fleet was most likely right out of his expertise and experience as a naval strategist, the PM was not comfortable without a carrier in his fleet. And to the Admiral's surprise, the Prime Minister reached for his report from the Admiralty sitting on his desk and opened it to find a plan of a new carrier on the first page.

'I didn't see that in there when I was checking it to send it to you from the Admiralty.' Field said, confused even further.

MacDonald inspected it, and he liked what he saw.

'Sir Frederick Field, you have no authority to build a battleship. Instead, you must build this.' the Prime Minister promptly thrust the plans onto the Admiral's lap. 'Build one. And make sure it's seaworthy.'

'Yes... of course, sir.' the Admiral replied, getting up from his chair, pushing it in, and then turning away and disappearing through the door.

The Prime Minister smiled to himself, and when he heard a bump and his cup of tea and saucer shatter on the floor, he couldn't help chuckling at the poor Admiral.

Character APP
Name: Liam Devlin
Age: 35
Birth Place: Dublin, Ireland
Rank: Private
Appearance: http://i.imgur.com/YEvUkt8.png
Role: Rifleman
Equipment: Lee-Enfield Rifle, Bayonet
Bio: Liam Devlin was born in the late 1870's to a tenement Family in the Dublin Slums. He grew up poor and was usually seen playing games of Gaelic nature, overawed by men such as Michael Cusack, who was organising a Gaelic Revival. Liam himself became a supporter of Home Rule in the years leading up to the Outbreak of WW1, having grown tired of the British manhandling his country. He was one of the many Dublin Workers fired in the 1913 Lockout, where he was arrested for several days by the Metropolitan Police. He stayed in the Tenements until he was enlisted into the British Army at the outbreak of WW1, much to his frustration.

Liam himself is a capable fighter, having participated in numerous fistfights in recent years. He is physically tough and, due to his Christian Brother's education, is quite knowledgeable. He likes to write in a journal he bought while in England, keeping a record of life in the Army. As regards to taking orders he has no problem following them. He has no problem with other working class people like himself, but he doesn't really like the well-off Protestants, like Captain Liam.
