Eisen, a PMT World (OOC)

It has been 100 years since civilization was destroyed on the colony world of an unknown posthuman civilization. Survivors are now rebuilding, but most information was lost, even their memories.

History
Eisen was a colony world for a late Transhuman / early Posthuman starfaring civilization, on the outer reaches of their territory. It may have been the last refuge of a nation fleeing catastrophe, or just another vacation world of a vast star empire. It’s no longer possible for the inhabitants to tell, and it seems no one has bothered to come by and check.

This civilization valued sapient rights very much, and thus, while it would exterminate omnicidal AIs, it wouldn’t always get rid of AIs that were merely a bit crazy. An insane asylum vessel carrying these AIs was docked above the planet. Unfortunately, very foolish “AI rights” terrorists seized control of the vessel and released the AIs onto the planet’s main grid.

Thousands of AIs were connected to the network. Some were altered human mind uploads. Others were created from trawling massive databases, for historical research, or to populate video games. Regardless of origin, most had strange goals - from restoring a finely-crafted copy of the historical Roman Empire, to turning the whole planet into one gigantic arthouse cafe and amusement park, to creating the “little green men” and flying saucers of a fictional alien world that never existed. For the first several days, things were quiet as the AIs quietly gained control of various fabrication systems and computer nodes across the planet. Then, chaos broke loose. Entire new ecologies of bizarre engineered organisms were unleashed. Vast troves of records were overwritten to reflect histories of worlds that never existed. Robotic drones collected unwilling citizens and placed them inside massive postmodern art installations.

Conflict was inevitable - first with planetary security forces, which were overwhelmed, and then between the AIs themselves, building up from automated backhoes and delivery trucks smashing into each other into dedicated war machines climbing over mountains and destroying urban areas. At some point (it’s not clear when) an automated kill signal of some kind was sent out, destroying near all computer hardware on the planet.

The planet’s civilization was effectively destroyed. Even worse, nearly all remaining records had been tampered with by the various AIs. Amnesia and death were widespread. Dangerous plants and animals were everywhere. Entire new sapient species - mostly based on humans - were created.

Setting Parameters
  • The Predecessors, especially the Cataclysm’s AIs, were capable of truly wondrous feats of technological marvel. However, this setting is PMT, and starts out at a much lower technology level. Technological wonders still stand on some parts of the planet, mostly in the various Madlands. In some places, they are even worshipped.
  • Some new human-like sapient species may have been created. However, these must be balanced. Things with very high power draw, very high intelligence, strength, and so on should be avoided. Your example for this should be Greater Mackonia and not any nations with things like vampires or demons or werewolves. Also, no ponies. You don’t need to have a special species, either. Humans are fine, too.
  • Space travel is limited to things like probes and small manned missions. No big colony ships, and nothing that can leave the star system.
  • Areas of the planet, called “Madlands,” are still full of rampaging killbots and other stuff leftover from the Cataclysm. You don’t want to go to the Madlands.
  • Omnicidal Maniac and Assimilator factions are generally to be limited to NPCs, unless they are somehow slow and emotional/irrational enough to engage in ordinary politics rather than grimdark slaughtermurdertorturing everything.

The Madlands
While the rampaging AIs themselves were largely destroyed (believed to be the result of a built-in kill signal that destroyed much - though not all - of the computer hardware on the planet), many of their creations, including robots and creatures, survived. This could range from anything from cyborg killer dinosaurs, to kilometers upon kilometers of roller coasters tended by rotting anthropomorphic theme park mascots, to abandoned cities filled with toxic gas, robots idly tending dumpsters and cleaning streets surrounded by skeletons. In general, the Madlands are very dangerous, and any expedition must be well-supplied and well-armed if it wants to make it back alive. The easy-to-clean areas of the Madlands have already been settled.

Map
Eisen Map: Elevation [16-07-16]
Eisen Map: Political [16-07-22]
Eisen Map: Biomes [16-07-16]
- Biomes are more suggestions than they are rules.
The map is broken up into triangles of roughly equal area. We’re just going to pretend they’re equal enough to make the maths easier. The planet is about the size of Earth. You cannot claim medium ocean and deep ocean tiles at the start of the game unless you give me some serious convincing. You can claim areas that are currently part of a Madlands. Those Madlands will be moved around to fit. Unclaimed areas should be assumed to be Madlands until they're filled.

Starting Tech Limits
You get more starting land if you start off with less tech.
  • Tech 1 (64 Starting Tris) - MT + 25 - Powered exoskeletal frames, early powered armor. Relies primarily on fossil fuels (which are present on this planet), fission power, and sometimes renewables for the eco-conscious. Primary firearms are chemically-propelled. Enough gene-editing to clean out most problems if you’re willing to pay for it. Mechanical arms have not yet exceeded natural ones, but they are projected to soon. Vehicles fly using conventional lifting technologies like wings. New replacement organs can be grown. Aging is still a thing, but it’s unclear for how much longer. Few people work in factories anymore, as they’re mostly automated.
  • Tech 2 (32 Starting Tris) - Mechanical or enhanced biomech arms exceed human basics, but full body prosthesis is not yet practical (or possibly even feasible). Infantry-scale railguns/coilguns are still a special case, though with the advent of powered armor, the typical chemically-propelled bullet is a lot bigger and faster. Directed energy weapons are still pretty much only mounted to vehicles for things like intercepting missiles. Commercial fusion power is a reality, but it won’t fit inside a main battle tank. AIs have not reached human level yet, but they’re getting closer.
  • Tech 3 (16 Starting Tris) - Fusion power is small enough to fit inside a main battle tank. Full body prosthesis is feasible and costs about as much as a new car - though that’s only at the lower end, which is little better than human. DEWs are still not practical as infantry weapons. Limited amounts of hovering - around 1-5m from the ground - are feasible for objects that can take the high level of power draw.

Example Application
Planet Eisen: Nation Application

Name: Nayba Collective
Concept: Quasi-nomadic Harmony/Supremacy half-human “alien”-hybrid cyborg cult in monster-infested Siberia.
Summary: After the area had collapsed into desperate tribes of hunter-gatherers, a small group of nine were lead into a remote cave, following visions of a far brighter - and stranger - future (probably from a Cataclysm-era AI, though this remains unclear). They emerged as a different, more biotech-compatible and cold-resistant species on a genetic level. The resulting cult began to spread across the cold Siberian wastes, capturing monsters from the Madlands and tearing them apart to see how they ticked (and recycle their bodies), then using the knowledge to build war beasts, grow bizarre plants and structures, and create exotic synthetic-organic hybrid bodies. Living mostly underground, they didn’t slay the surface-dwelling humans who refused to convert - they simply outlasted them.
Starting Tech: 3
Government Type: Loose Theocratic Confederacy
Leader(s): The Seer
Capital: Jokuskai
Economy Type: Varies; often communal in small colonies and almost capitalist in large ones
Population: 25 million
Map Claim: [already on map]
RP Example: Nayba Thread
Dominant Species: Nayba. A human-derivative that is highly cold resistant, heals more quickly, sees well in low light, and is more adaptable to biotechnology and cybernetics. Recognizable by golden irises, and, if the skin is pierced, a light purple blood and noticeable thick 'underskin' insulating layer. Many Nayba use engineered, manufactured/grown bodies instead, however, with brain transplants.
Additional Notes: I really should update this.

Additional Information: More Madlands Ideas

Here are some more ideas for Madlands that might be near or next to your nation. Multiple similar copies may exist for some (such as Wunderland and its sister park, Wunderworld Caulifornia).
  • Tyrantosaurus Wrex and his Murdersaur Imperium - Killer sapient dinosaur warriors with 80's style, violent marauding warrior culture, and railguns.
  • Death Furball Territory - Apocalyptic motorbike/hoverbike gangs of man-cat hybrids.
  • Death to Communism Zone - Propaganda-spewing robots that kill all "Communists" - which means all non-natives and non-robots.
  • Pleasantsprings, Iowa - If Stepford were an assimilating robot plague.
  • The Deadlands - Radioactive, poisonous, and viral threat area. Robots preserve architecture of the old world and keep intruders off their perfectly-manicured lawns.
  • World of Murdercraft - Area ruled by enemy boss AI from MMORPG that went bankrupt 1,200 years ago.
  • Wunderland - The Third Reich meets Alice in Wonderland: The Robotic Amusement Park.
  • Nature-loving blue space elves - Defunct. Killed and recycled by the Nayba and other neighboring powers.
  • Cubecraft - Highly habitable environmentally, but anything insufficiently cube-shaped is destroyed on sight by the locals.
  • Smash Zone - Robots locked into a never-ending war with each other over a central point. Visitors are killed and used for robot-making materials.
  • El Salvador Dali - If the highest tech a player can start off with is Tech 3, this area is Tech 7. You really don't want to be there. Trust me.
  • Deathsprings - What looks like a jungle is actually one gigantic carnivorous plant

Planet Eisen: Nation Application

Name: The Consortium
Concept: A heavily damaged Pre-Fall City divided into three parts, a massive, highly advanced Factory that is capable of producing things beyond the comprehension of anyone still living, used to produce basic firearms and primitive (compared to what it was designed to build) but complex devices of various sort. Is only in partially functional condition, industrial accidents making it worse all the time. Ruled by a group of Traders that exists in Palatial District, controls everything in the city, does their damnedest to keep things running despite literally everything falling apart without any ability to stop it due to a combination of extreme circumstances and internal corruption. Lower District is about to explode because the Consortium is all kinds of not helping the situation down there.
Summary: See above, I guess.
Starting Tech: Tech 1.
Government Type: Rule by Trading Conglomerate
Leader(s): The Board of Directors, staffed by the Trademasters themselves.
Capital: The Unified City, Palatial District, The Tower of Glass
Economy Type: Free-Trade/Free Market with restriction on what exactly can be sold by Non-Consortium Merchants.
Population: 16 Million
Map Claim: We're already on the Map, If I remember correctly.
RP Example: [Anything by Tinfect in the GA Forum]
Dominant Species: Humans.
Additional Notes: Non-Humans are ostracized as bizarre mutations that are often seen as extremely unsafe/unhealthy to be around, regardless of whether or not they actually are. The Consortium maintains a small fleet of Airships for whatever they deem necessary.

It was so bad that people needed answers, blah blah, and then founded a religion based on the eventual salvation of mankind blah blah opportunism AIs are bad beautiful priestess comes out of nowhere and assumes power, consolidates all remaining pre-war tech, there's psionics and stuff, utopia/dystopia, blah blah... most of this stuff is just in concept stages...

Starting Tech: 2, 3 in small concentrations. There is a large tech level disparity between the governors and the governed.
Government Type: Theocratic Absolute Monarchy
Leader(s): The Grand Priestess
Capital: Artahalla
Economy Type: Capitalist, although the state owns almost all businesses
Population: 20 million
Map Claim: already there
RP Example: You know me bruh. I'll link one later though.
Dominant Species: Human, possibly other species that other countries come up with. There may actually be a small population of Nayba in the North and Western areas. The Church does not discriminate.
Additional Notes: This is still heavily conceptual, I'll put more work in this when I finish my Cold War History Class.

So clarification on psionics and the like. It will probably show up as a later technology possessed by the crashed Posthuman civilization, and would use as much energy as it would normally take to do whatever you're doing with it. At game start, anyone with these abilities to a significant degree is extremely rare - one in one million at best - and is likely able to do something like start a cult. That's my intention, anyway. More details will have to be hashed out later.

Planet Eisen: Nation Application

Name: Studio 13 Films
Concept: A film studio that mercilessly raids towns and cities in order to capture foreigners to use as extras for B-Movies.
Summary: Studio 13 Films, which is notorious famous for its ability to make terrible great films for under 500 common units of currency, is often described by its top executives as a glorious liberator of those who are kept from the movie industry by oppressive governments worldwide. Its citizens, however (who are all forcibly employed as actors, movie production workers, or soldiers), occasionally whisper in debugged safezones that it is a cruel, corrupt corporate psuedo-nation constantly on the verge of financial collapse. To fuel its constant hunger for extras and production staffers, Studio 13 often launches raids into neighboring lands to burn towns and kidnap civilians. Because of this, and perhaps because of its god-awful movies, the studio is feared across Eisen.
Starting Tech: Tech 2
Government Type: Corporate Oligarchy
Leader(s): The board of executives, which advises the CEO.
Capital: Studio 13
Economy Type: Capitalism
Population: 18 million
Map Claim: The largest island just to the southwest of the central landmass
RP Example: This, or any of my other posts in any of my other regional RPs.
Dominant Species: Human
Additional Notes: 'Great' films produced for less than $500!

I'm curious what other twists you might have for these mall guys, such as a population of looters living in the basements and hiding from mall security, mall security being staffed primarily by overweight dudes on Segways, the "CEO" being a figurative prisoner drafted by the system, or the mall actually being open to visitors but easily prone to declaring them as enemies.

More Madlands ideas:
  • Tyrantosaurus Wrex and his Murdersaur Imperium
  • Death Furball Territory (Apocalyptic Man-Cat Biker Gangs)
  • Death to Communism Zone (sadly, any non-natives and non-robots are considered Communists)
  • Pleasantsprings, Iowa (Stepford, the assimilating empire reboot)
  • The Deadlands (Radioactive, poisonous, and viral threat area; robots preserve architecture of the old world and keep intruders off their perfectly-manicured lawns)
  • World of Murdercraft (Area ruled by enemy boss AI from MMORPG that went bankrupt 1,200 years ago)
  • Wunderland (Hitler meets Alice in Wonderland amusement park)
  • Nature-loving blue space elves (defunct; killed and recycled by the Nayba)
  • Cubecraft (Highly habitable environmentally, but anything insufficiently cube-shaped is destroyed on sight by the locals)
  • Smash Zone (robots locked into a never-ending war with each other over a central point; visitors are killed and used for robot-making materials)
  • El Salvador Dali (If the highest tech a player can start off with is Tech 3, this area is Tech 7. You really don't want to be there. Trust me.)
  • Deathsprings (What looks like a jungle is actually one gigantic carnivorous plant)

Most of the Madlands probably won't be this coherent, though. Most will be in a constant state of war with neighboring Madlands, without clear borders between them.

All of these need to be in the world.

Planet Eisen: Nation Application

Name: The Vyrak Technate
Concept: Industrialist technocracy inhabited by genetically modified humans with a penchant for diesel/decopunk aesthetics and technologies (think Fallout/Bioshock). Also, pseudo-german is the official language.
Summary: The city of Vyrak, home of the Vyrakshi and capital of the Technate, is believed to have been constructed by a Cataclysm-era AI for an unknown purpose, although it was never completed. Found by human survivors shortly after the entity responsible for constructing it was destroyed, they decided to make the art-deco city their new home, a place to recover from the destruction. Within the city, they discovered a series of books containing information on various pieces of technology and how to construct such devices, giving the new inhabitants a repertoire of potent knowledge, although it is still primitive when compared to the great works of the civilisation that made Eisen their home in the first place.
Starting Tech: 3
Government Type: Technocracy
Leader(s): The Technate Council
Capital: The city of Vyrak
Economy Type: Command Economy, run with the consultation of econophysics.
Population: 13 million
Map Claim: To the northeast of the consortium, on the coast above the madlands.
RP Example: Here
Dominant Species: Vyrakshi, basically ordinary humans with minor genetic enhancements (slightly improved strength and speed, universally good vision, eradication of genetic diseases, etc.)
Additional Notes: This is a puppet of SGU. If any anything needs to be changed or specified, just ask.
