UGGH! THIS FONT IS HARD TO READ

Postby Kolechistan » Sun Jun 26, 2016 1:07 am

How do I change the font to an arial or other sans serif font?

The scripty cursive foofoo font is hard as hell to read, and I hate it.

We... don't actually use a "scripty cursive foofoo font" on the site. Can you provide a screenshot?

Have you tried disabling extensions/operating in safe mode? It could be that one of your extension is causing the change, and I notice you do have several installed.

None of the extensions I have mess with fonts.

Two of them were homebrew to keep my tabs and bookmarks sorted, and the third is a font normalizer that wasn't even installed wheN ifirst noticed this.

It looks like everything is in bold+italics for some reason.

This is the kind of error that often results from improperly closing HTML tags, but I know of no such mistake in the NationStates code.

I've run into this on Chrome on older machines. Can you try this:
Luna Amore wrote:So I've seen italicized fonts on Chrome before and the only consistent fix I've seen is to check Chrome's flags ( chrome://flags in the url bar) and look for Disable DirectWrite and make sure it is set to enable.

*edit* make sure to close and restart Chrome after the change

Oddly enough I'm using chrome on linux, and there is no "DirectWrite" option listed.

I've got Chrome on Windows 10 and I don't see the bug. It's probably either the computer itself or one of the extensions. I'd suggest trying the following things:

[*]Enter Chrome settings and reset your settings to the default. It's apparent it's not anything on the server hamsters end.
[*]Disable all your extensions. Perhaps a extension on your computer manipulated the settings to where it changed the font?
[*]Try a different browser (such as Safari, Opera, IE). Does this problem persist for you on other browsers, or is it just chrome?

If it persists on other browsers, it's likely a computer problem, from there I'd suggest scanning to make sure you don't have viruses and such. Malwarebytes are very good at catching things that regular antiviruses don't. If you're looking for a free antivirus, try avast.

If it doesn't show up on other browsers, it's likely a bug in either the browsers or the extensions you have enabled in chrome.

Also, have any of your extensions recently been updated? It may be a problem with a new version of one of them.

Looks fine in Firefox under Ubuntu.

Regardless of what you think about your extensions "not messing with fonts", I think EWS has the right idea - strip back to a clean browser and see if that clears it. If so, then re-add your extensions 1-by-1 until you find which one caused it.

From the screenshot it doesn't look like misplaced italics to me. That's a different font, something like Chancery.

Turned off all extensions, still getting the italics and fancy text.

The text in question btw is from the url:

http://www.nationstates.net/nation=kolechistan

It also shows up in the issue selection/handling page.

Yeah, that's what I checked. Just so you don't think we're yanking your chain, here's what I'm seeing

The site is fine - it's something at your end. Possibly the default serif font on your browser, or a local stylesheet.

Expanding on that, go into settings, show advanced, then click customize fonts - you should be able to see the fonts there.

I can't find the "advanced" link in my settings.

Could I get a screenshot of where the setting is?

I just wanted to point out that this is an issue even if I change browsers. Since it worked before, and because of this I'm pretty sure it's on the server's side.

I don't think anyone here has been able to reproduce this issue. I haven't been able to reproduce it on my Chromium installation on Ubuntu 14.04; my Safari and Chrome installs on macOS 10.11; or on Firefox, Chrome, or Internet Explorer on Windows 7.

Sorry, not sure how I missed this earlier. But if it is not just on your browser, it probably won't solve anything.

Oh, I thought you were talking about nationstates settings. I was going bonkers looking at my account here :P.

I checked the fonts and something got really screwed up there. It was trying to render the page in some variant of arabic.

Issue resolved.
