So yeah, this RP is meant to be an illustration of a country's collapse into civil conflict following a devastating, infrastructure-shattering natural disaster. It is primarily meant to keep us entertained and having fun during summer (well for northern hemisphere at least), but even with that in mind it should be remembered that this will also have the intentions of training and maturing roleplayers and their writing skills, testing roleplaying concepts and bringing players together.

It should be noted that extensive military knowledge or realism awareness is not required for the RP (although the RP is, of course, MT and human only). Your primary goal is to jerk out textwalls practice good writing and to prove/sharpen/train your skills in the field (and have fun); I will aim to get some experienced players knowledgeable in the technical fields to try to mentor the folk here. The RP will invoke the traditional 'fuckton of countries jumping into fold for interoceanic intervention' trope, despite its platitudinous state, however I also wish for said element to not take up too much of the roleplay and more be centred on how the rebels work on their path to power. This RP will try to center on the relationship between outside intervention and participants in a domestic conflict. Interesting ways to flesh this out would be, to, say, instead of '500 frigates' across the sea your nation be involved in a complicated affair of supplying one of the participants, or trying to alter one faction's ideology for your own needs as it goes on. 'Implanted agents' will be invoked a lot.

Alternatively if you're that in depth enough you can always go for the civil and diplomatic side of this conflict. Have your reporters venture into the hills and live with rebels! Expose another nation's supporting of a group to their own agenda! Call them out! Get your newspapers batshit insane over the war! Have your ambassador talk with the rip in pepperonis'd president! The possibilities are endless and military involvement is not the only possibility.

OOC CONDUCT, RULES AND REGULATIONS

1. Ah, an old rule of the trade...NO godmodding, metagaming or anything below basic etiquette. This should be obvious at this point; such acts, if unable to be addressed OOCly, will be treated as 'tetraphysical protocol breach' and FT Synkom will promptly obliterate said breach with a good smack of an IGNORE cannon.
2. Don't be a dick. Accept criticism from others, don't get batshit insane when someone else calls you out for unacceptable behaviour. Yet another old rule of the trade.
3. Please abide by the RP setting agreements.
4. Keep OOC threads as clean of filth as possible. That means NO meme spam, NO shitposting, NO off-topic discussions (these should be taken to TGs) and if a dispute with another player gets heated, take it to the TGs. OOC warfare kills more than nukes, just saying.
5. We know not everyone posts or lurks 24/7, but if you have a major role don't piss off everyone by sitting there for weeks doing nothing. If you feel the need to temporarily withdraw please notify.
6. Any violation of this will result in the offender's prompt banning from the RP and if they are roleplaying a faction, said group will be handed off to someone else.

TL;DR: Earthquake happens, dams blow up and flood country, country falls into civil war between communists, technocracy advocates and new military junta.

Takika, full name Takikan Republic, whose name was believed to be an onomatopoeia of the cracking of locally picked nuts in explorers' mouths during their arrival, is a medium-sized country located on the east coast of the Naveka continent, with a population of around 12.4 million in late 2015. Due to frequent devastating earthquakes and floods in the past the agrarian country was rather behind in terms of economic and human development, the poor nation having a GDP per capita of mere four digits in the early 20th century. The few prosperous areas were mostly on the coastal cities such as Predibos and Opokazh, which relied on trade with foreign countries to generate profit.

This however changed when dictator Izbor Karet massively restructured and industrialized the country since his rise to power in 1958 in a military coup, improving living standards through public housing initiatives, putting an end to floods with the damming of major rivers, boosting and support of industry and agriculture alike as well as creating jobs and education opportunities. The economy became industrialized and modernized quickly with outside help as well as Karet's own iron-fisted initiatives, the GDP growing at a rate of over 10% per year in the late 1970s. The 'Karet Miracle' would leave behind a positive, even nostalgic, impression in the Takikan people for decades.

Following his death in 1987, the country was democratised. Over the years however the corrupt and indecisive government undone much of Karet's contributions and was unable to solve many social problems created during the course of their liberalization policies. Social tensions between various groups tensely divided Takikan society, the whole system seemingly in decay. Many protested the growing ineffectiveness of the liberal-democratic government as economic growth began to slow down, bureaucratic inefficiency plagued society and corruption became rampant.

On March 30 2016, a Richter 8.8 earthquake hit the Tordos mountains, the epicentre located in the northeastern area of Takika, causing hundreds of deaths, however what made the situation worse was the earthquake's collapsing of the Karet dam on the Lepod river, which fell from poor management and lack of maintenance, causing massive floods, along with multiple aftershocks and resulting landslides collapsing 3 other mountain dams in Takika. Thousands were killed and billions of dollars worth of economic assets lost during the disasters, which ravaged much of the country. Power stations were flooded or shut down, telecommunications blacked out for weeks, the entire country plunged into darkness.

A state of emergency was declared on April 2, with the government quickly rallying resources to repair the damage, however a group of officers of the Takikan Army led by Lieutenant-General Opovos Navony launched a coup on April 15, overthrowing the centrist government and 'exiling the cabinet with plane tickets to Otiver (the city where foreign investors gathered before)' as worded by a local newspaper. Navony established a military junta, the Emergency Committee, comprising himself and several other high-ranking officers. The Navony government promised restoration of order and received support quickly, following sacking of many ministers and politicians known before for corruption, this increased even more so. A new junta was established, reorganizing the armed forces and quick to initiate rescuing and repairing missions in the devastated mountain areas.

The chaos and civil disobedience that had followed on 4.2 did not die down however and very soon the power vacuum was used by two insurgent groups to rapidly gain prominence. First was the Liberation Army for the Takikan People (LATP), a communist-socialist insurgent group that had been active under many names back in Karet's era, before being forced into mountains and rural areas after successful anti-guerrilla campaigns by Karet and the first generation of democratically elected leaders. They had slowly resurged over the years however acquiring weapons and equipment bought through revenue generated from the crop of rural villages they had captured, and using the earthquake's aftermath jumped back into the game through successive capturing of northwestern towns. Leftist rebels also captured cities and towns in the south declaring allegiance to the LATP, while a mountain town, Numesh, devastated by the earthquake, was quickly captured by LATP troops as soon as the earth had calmed.

Another was a newly emerging one, one with rather futurist ideals. The Takikan Technate Movement, founded in 2008 as a think-tank and political party but later grew radical in their ideas and eventually started calling for violent revolution to institute a 'technate', a technocratic, scientocratic system which they viewed as the best and most efficient government structure and management method, many tenets inspired by the 30s Technocracy movement of the 20th century such as thermoeconomics and energy accounting. The TTM dispersed their supporter base across the country, and had also been arming themselves through secret deals with Odryska and other technate nations, with the fall of the dams they launched takeovers of town halls as armed intellectuals and public workers, the main support base of the TTM, forced officials out at the point of their guns. The TTM has captured many significant towns and even the large city of Predibos but still based their command in Buskeja, their founding town.

The junta's forces have already started to engage in fighting against both movements, all are attempting to win hearts as they race and dash for devastated towns to rebuild. The helpless remnants of the former democratic government are holding out on a few coastal cities, concerned by their own existence as it will be only a matter of time before Navony gives them a second plane ticket off to a liberal democracy - or to heaven. Indeed, who could have thought an earthquake leading to such aftershocks...

The Takikan Republic is a medium-sized country on the west coast of the Naveka continent. In 2015 it had a population of 12.4 million and a GDP of $254 billion. With an area of nearly 377,000 square kilometers, it is ranked the 6th in terms of area in Naveka and considered medium-sized in global perspective.

History

The area that comprised modern Takika was explored by Kalbovians in the 17th century, when it was noted for the prevalence of nuts in the northern area which the explorers lived off once they had ran out of food. The explorers returned to their homes but another wave came in the mid-1700s, followed by exoduses of settlers to establish this place, Takika, as their new frontier. The settlers arrived at the southern and western coasts as well as farming along the banks of major rivers, at this point the prevalence of natural disasters in the area showed itself as in 1787 an earthquake destroyed a settlement and left hundreds dead. Less than a year later, a massive flood destroyed several farms and towns and killed more than a thousand, devastating the area. This caused many to leave, although the majority stayed, believing the disasters were only occasional. Indeed, the flowing rivers offered good soil for agriculture and the coasts were wide and plentiful in catch.

In 1803, the Takikans, who have, despite all odds, turned the region into one of civilization, proposed to form a state to become a member of a pan-Navekan confederation. The plan proceeded and a republic was proclaimed, though following wars in the major proponents of this confederation the plan fell apart and Takika became an independent republic instead. The agrarian country however suffered a staggering amount of natural disasters due to strong rainfall and increasing seismic activity in the area in the 19th century, with over thousands dead as a result of these disasters and economic development slowed down severely. Most of the country, primarily farmers, were in poverty and constantly prayed that another flood or quake will not strike, while a small elite built up in the coastal cities based upon trade. This strong division between the rich urbanites and the poor rural people worsened problems.

This changed in 1958 however when Izbor Karet, a general in the Takikan army, took over the republic in a coup d'etat. He massively restructured and industrialized the country with some foreign assistance and his own iron-fisted initiatives, damming rivers and initiating large projects to mitigate floods, boosting and support of industry and agriculture alike as well as creating jobs and education opportunities and a public housing project offering homes for those who have lost their residences in earthquakes. Thanks to these measures, the rapidly industrialized economy grew at a rate of over 10% per year from 1977 to 1979 and the total GDP multiplied during his rule, alongside a booming population. Following Karet's death in 1987 the country was democratised to become an unitary parliamentary republic.

The ineffectiveness, corruption and bureaucracy of the democratic government however led to mass dissatisfaction of the public and a low opinion towards the career-based politicians who had little of the country-benefitting heart of Karet. A classical story of a country gone to shit after democracy, by the 21st century Takika's unemployment was at an all-time high, wealth gaps surged and the great dams that were once monuments to Karet's rule suffered from chronic mismanagement and lack of proper maintenance, primary reasons leading to their collapse in the 2016 earthquake.

Geography

Takika with 376,980 square kilometers of area has a generally broad and flat landscape, making it a suitable area for agriculture, especially given several rivers flow in its borders. The Tordos mountains start in the northeastern area of Takika and from there the major rivers and their tributaries flow, irrigating the land. However, Takika is also located on an intersection of tectonic plates in the Tordos hence seismic activity in the area.

Inland, the dominant form of climate is humid continental, with the coasts being that of oceanic climate. Takika exhibits high rainfall with as much as an average annual precipitation of 8,340 millimeters per year. This is the primary cause of floods but the frequent rain also helps in boosting agriculture in the area, although there have been many cases of crops drowning.

Takika has many natural resources such as utilizable hydropower and arable soil. It also has many minerals such as bismuth, copper and aluminium in the northeast area as well as coal and iron found much more widespread in the country.

Demographics

Takika has a population of 12,440,340 in 2015. The population grew massively during Karet's dictatorship thanks to improving of infrastructure allowing for increased sustaining of population as well as the successes of agriculture able to feed a larger population. In terms of demographic transition Takika is considered to be mid-Stage 3 with a low death rate and a decreasing birth rate. In 2014 the total fertility rate was 1.8, a great decrease from 2.6 of the 1950s when Karet came to power. Takika also has a stationary population pyramid in 2014, and exhibits typical demographic traits of a lower MEDC (More Economically Developed Country) although in terms of actual economy it straddles between a MEDC and a LEDC.

The 2014 census shows the ethnicity in Takika largely homogenous with 93.7% being Takikans and the rest varying concentrations of people from neighbouring countries. Mavekans are the largest minority with 4.7%, most of which live east/south of the Yebina river where Takika has borders with Yeblos and Maveka.

Culture

Takika, like the rest of the Navekan continent, has a largely somewhat-Greek cultural influence, though traces of them are lost in language. Most Takikans are hard-working but also daring innovators who have somewhat of a sense of collectivity, although they are also described as 'selfish' due to their concerns for their own survival with the natural disasters always imminent. Takikan cuisine is known for the prevalent use of nuts and sometimes a mixture of cooked and raw food being served in one dish. Being often more concerned for their own survival Takikans have made few accomplishments in literature or arts, although the few who have are almost always coastal inhabitants.

Economy

The Karet miracle boosted the Takikan economy by many times since the 1960s following his mass industrialization initiative. Takika has a nominal GDP of $254 billion and a per capita GDP of $20,450 in 2015, with a slowing growth of 1.5% per year. Takika's major sectors of its economy are mostly secondary although a service sector has been growing since the 1990s. Major industries include machine building, agriculture, mining and construction. In 2009 Takika reached a record high unemployment rate of 7.2%, while the situation has improved since then there remains many economic problems in Takika.

Following the Tordos earthquake and its consequences, nearly all economical assets of Takika have been completely paralyzed.

The Liberation Army for the Takikan People is the armed wing of the outlawed Takikan People's Revolutionary Movement, a coalition of leftist communist-socialist parties that were declared illegal by Izbor Karet in the 1960s following attempted communist subversive activity. The LATP was formed shortly after the TPRM's proclamation as a joint armed wing of the Takikan socialist movement, however was no match for Karet's heavy-handed military and cooperative local partisans and were forced to the mountains and the north, where they held out in pockets for decades dwindling in strength. Following Karet's death however the LATP resurged in power as the democratic government was too corrupt and inefficient to keep it in check or indeed destroy it and through arms supplies by unnamed foreign socialist states the LATP rebuilt their guerrilla force. By 2009 there were reports of the LATP possessing armoured vehicles factories and munitions factories in their zones of control.

Following the Tordos earthquakes and aftermath in 2016, the LATP grasped this chance and used the power vacuum to commence a 'country-wide offensive' in which dozens of towns fell to the communist militants in a day. Several other leftist militant groups have also captured cities and declared allegiance to the LATP. It is estimated that the LATP possesses a strength of at least 14,000 as of latest events.

LATP units are organized into 'operational groups' which are self-sustaining fronts with their own agricultural and industrial assets necessary to sustain their forces. These are then subdivided into battalions, primary combat units. The LATP also exercises Maoist theories of guerrilla and protracted warfare. As of the latest events, the LATP has 5 operational groups of unequal size, most of the industrial assets located in their areas along the Stazhos river.

Politically, the LATP is likely subject to schism on the method of post-revolution national governance. The old-school vanguard Marxist-Leninist faction's influence is being challenged by Maoist, Stalinist, Khrushchevist and even democratic-socialist factions. These have not significantly impeded party structure however.

Players playing as the LATP are granted permission to organize its forces and equipment as they see fit themselves.

The Takikan Technate Movement, also known as the Takikan Movement for Technocracy and colloquially known as the Futurists is a political movement that advocates for the establishment of a technocracy in the form of a technate in Takika. Their primary political goals are to establish a 'truly efficient political system' which is managed by 'technical experts that actually have an idea what they're doing' in contrast to 'career-based politicians'. Besides a revamping of the political system, the TTM is also advocating of a restructuring of the economic system as well, that would be based on thermoeconomic principles and the valuing of energy, rather than arbitrary price values, in products.

The TTM was founded in 2008 as the Thinkers for a More Efficient Takika, however the group became convinced that the decaying economic and political state in democratic Takika could not allow their ideas to be implemented in the context of democratic election to power. As a result by 2011 the group had started to dive into radicalism and had advocated for insurrection on several occasions. By mobilizing students, public workers and other social groups they had obtained a significant membership count and wide support across the society due to their revolutionary views which fitted the ideas of the intelligentsia, students and intellectuals - who made up the membership base.

By 2014, the TTM was recorded as having being responsible for several violent clashes with other political groups. It had also started to prepare for armed insurrection as recorded in several 'cargos of questionable content' by the Takikan intelligence. These were used to assemble weapons, vehicles and machinery for arms production in either basements or abandoned warehouses in the countryside purchased. However, due to the difficulty of building military vehicles without news going out, the TTM mainly focused on high-tech infantry implements, such as individual protection, scanners/sensors and weapons.

During the Tordos earthquake, and in its aftermath, the TTM perhaps took the most of the initiative. Using their widespread, diffused membership, they quickly seized governmental buildings subduing cities under their control. Significant relief efforts were undertaken by the group in a PR campaign, however there was noticeably more emphasis on the repairing of infrastructurally important regions like major roads and power plants. The procuring of more professional production equipment in the factories of large cities have allowed the TTM to produce heavier weapons such as RPGs and MANPADS and even vehicles at a larger scale. Blueprints of easy to build mobility vehicles and urban fire support vehicles are also being supplied by Odryska.

Like the LATP, the TTM is very scattered, but has a more centralized organization maintained thanks to its firm control of the area immediate of Buskeja, its headquarters. It is organized into 6 largely sufficient 'columns', on average with about 1,500 men in each. The TTM has a total membership of 21,000 in 2016 and an armed wing of approximately 16,000 troops, not all of which party members.

The Takikan Armed Forces is the military of Takika. In 2016 it had 87,400 troops, or around 0.6% of its population. Organized into 7 corps, it has received modernization in 2008 however is largely mismanaged and suffering from poor organization. Navony's new government has pledged to reform the TAF into a more efficient combat force for fighting the various anti-government factions that had risen up. Despite the onslaught of the rebel forces, the government troops have been able to mostly retain control of its assets. This is not the case in some areas however where the TTM seized much of the southeastern frontier's arsenal.

However, some army units have since defected, either to communist or Technate movements, or are lost. The ORBAT will only list approximate forces still available.
