IC Thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=382182

This is the sign up for a Game of Thrones/Songs of Ice and Fire inspired RP. It will be medieval Fantasy Tech with limited magic and monsters to be determined by the players. Each Player will control a House that must make alliances or wars to take the throne of all of a fictitious Dienstad or declare their independence once and for all. I have attached a link to the map I am currently using. City Locations can be moved if requested, names are up to you, but I will update them as quickly as I can. If you would like, download a copy of the map and edit it, then post your claims on this thread. I am also accepting names for rivers, seas, lakes and oceans from sign ups. Due to situations beyond my control, I am limiting the initial sign up to seven players including myself. If things go well or houses ‘die off’ we may add more, depending on the RP.

As it stands, this RP will take place on a made up continent called Dienstad, much like the region many of the interested parties are from. The basic background plot line is this:

King Robert has died, leaving no heir for the throne. No one is in a position of power strong enough to waltz in and take it for themselves. Within days of his death, two separate claims for the throne are made. The first is the Queen, being the wife of the late King her family believes that is time a Queen takes over the Kingdom and ensures a peaceful transition. However the Queen needs a Consort to give her an heir, with the old King dead and enemies at the gate she will have to remarry, and soon. The second is the King’s first cousin, a man from the same noble family as the late King. He believes, with the death of the King, he is the next logical choice in line for the throne, but he has not made strong diplomatic ties with the other Houses. As such, he will need to negotiate and work with the other Houses to defeat his late cousin’s wife and her conspirators.

To sign up, pick and name between 4 and 6 cities within close proximity to each other to claim for your House. List their location and names on your sign up sheet. In addition, each player signing up gets to claim one title of their choosing. This Title will go to a Family Member who may or may not be the reigning Lord, but will give them significant influence in Capital Politics. As such the titles and benefits are as follows:

King’s First Cousin - According to his beliefs, the King’s Land in the center should be under his rightful control. Many consider him to be the rightful King, and will support his claim. However, he is Lord of his Family’s land, and as such has no starting contact with the King’s Land at the beginning.
BONUS: 3,000 loyal Royal Soldiers in his Family Capital, Initial Claim to Throne, Starts in Family Home.

Queen - According to the Queen and her birth Family, it is time for a Queen to rule Dienstad. She starts in the Capital, with the loyalty of the King’s Guard and many members of the Small Council, including the Master of Coin and Master of Secrets. These members will allow the Queen to control Royal Budget and Intelligence, as long as the Houses keep paying their taxes of course.
BONUS: 60 King’s Guard Soldiers in the Capital, 100 Family Soldiers in the Capital, Initial Claim to Throne, Royal Treasury, and ability to recognize coups before they take place, starts in Capital

Hand of the King - The King shits, and the Hand wipes, the old saying goes. The Hand of the King was the last person to Speak with the King before he passed away, and as such only he knows the true desires of the dead King. In his dying breath, the King assigned him as Protector of the Realm and promised the Hand’s children the Throne. However, who will believe such a claim? The Small Council he led may not be trustworthy, but the late King trusted him to ensure the future of the Realm. Can he negotiate to ensure the King’s will is upheld?
BONUS: 200 Family Soldiers in the Capital, copy of King’s last will and testament, claim on Throne, starts in Capital, Loyalty of the Callraven and its 4,000 soldiers.

Commander of Kingsport Royal Army - A brave Knight who has earned the respect of the King enough to command the Garrison in charge of protecting the Capital. He leads the largest force in Kingsport. 3,000 Royal Army Soldiers loyal to him and whomever sits on the throne. Though he could easily take the city for himself, Dienstad would burn him alive for it. Instead as the number of Kings grows, it is in his best interest to determine one to follow and support their claim, or attempt the much harder line of neutrality.
BONUS: 3,000 Royal Soldiers loyal to him in the Capital, 40 ships in the Capital, starts in Capital

Lord of Rosenport - To the north of Roseport lays the mining City of Goldshire, the largest gold mine in Dienstad. The Lord of Rosenport is the de facto commander of Goldshire simply because they are the responsible for its defense. As such, Roseport controls nearly a third of the Gold that keeps the Royal Treasury afloat. The rest coming from other sources and taxes. As such, they have one of the largest armies in the King’s Land under their control. 8,500 Men Loyal to the Roseport Lord, however 1,500 soldiers are from the Goldshire Garrison and won’t abandon their post. BONUS: Massive Gold surplus, 3,000 soldiers in Goldshire and 5,500 soldiers in Roseport, 20 ships, starts in Capital for King's funeral.

Lord of Golden Keep - If Kingsport holds the Capital, and Roseport holds the Gold, then Golden Keep holds the military forces that protect the King’s Sea from invasion. His is the largest Navy and Army in the King’s Land, with 8,000 soldiers, 2,000 Royal Marines and over half of the Royal Navy. If the Lord of Golden Keep so chose, he could bypass Roseport and launch an invasion of Kingsport to ensure the crown rests on the head of whomever he wished.
BONUS: 10,000 total soldiers, 80 ships, starts in Capital for King's funeral.

The Bracatans were once rulers of the ancient kingdom of the western scrub lands called Adria, but was brought under the rule of the Seven Kingdoms in the earliest conquests. Since then, they have served King's Port quietly and in return have been respected with neglect. The sun, which is not hindered by hills or forests, has darkened the skin and hair of the Adriats far more than their eastern neighbors. While most of the Adriats are herders or small farmers, the wealth of the Bracatans comes from their control of the salt market. Salt is mostly mined in Pugrahan, but is also refined in the coastal cities of Azim and Balda. There are heavy limitations on the mining and refining of salt and only a noble (Tarkaan) may issue a permit for its manufacture.

The Adriats prefer blunt weapons such as clubs and hammers, even officers prefer the blunted falcata to Eastern swords. Since it makes them unlikely to pierce heavy armor, which they do not wear, they are more likely to incapacitate than to kill. Their fighters are sometimes called Shatterers because they can break bones to great effect through chain mail or weak plates. For range, the herder tradition has also lead them to prefer slings to bows. Horses are seldom owned by the poor so typically only officers and nobles will ride. Finally, they also create the finest Siege Slings (trebuchet) in the realm, though they are seldom seen outside their own country since there is a maze of rivers that divides them from the rest of the world.

Does that work for you?

Those cities sound great, thanks for attributing them. That's really exactly what I had in mind.

It's Sir Andralin <Minorhouse>, I'm not sure how we're doing minor houses though.

Give me a House name and a city name, I can add it after the map claims have been made.

House Qoryx are a strong, mountainous house that have ruled the Alps since the invention of writing, perhaps even before. House Qoryx and the Alpine folk had previously been extremely isolated from the rest of the continent and was very defensive against anyone who dared approach the Alps. They celebrated their own culture, and developed their own language and customs completely separate from the rest of Dienstad. Knowing the mountains were well defended to the point of impenetrability, Konrad Qoryx proclaimed himself "Schutz der Alpen," and called up the Alpine folk to join him in claiming the surrounding area to the North, an area that could be easily defended and would provide much wealth and prosperity to the new Qoryxern people. The local lordships and feifdoms fell quickly and brutally to the Qoryxern, and were declared subjects of the Qoryxern people, becoming the slaves, workers and servants of the ruling class of Qoryxern. Soon after, the nearby feifs and lordships came to negotiate with the newly founded "country", and arranged that, in exchange for House Qoryx's loyalty and that of the Qoryxern people, the newly arising Kingdom would come to include the new Mountainlands in the Realm by showering them with titles, fortunes and royal positions within the Realm. The now Herzog Konrad agreed, on the condition that they would run their own internal affairs and maintain their own culture, but as an integral part of the greater Kingdom. Thus, the Mountainlands was formed and joined with Kingsland to form the Realm. Additionally, while Alpine is their first language (referred to as Mountain Tongue by the rest of the Kingdom), the Qoryxern all speak common tongue fluently, albeit with a thick Alpine accent. ((Alpine = RL German))

Every child of House Qoryx is born in the free mountain city of Schwyz (Freibergstadt Schwyz), a two days' ride from the family home of Zürich, in view of the Lord of Schwyz (Freiherr von Schwyz) and the townspeople of Schwyz (der Schwyzer), a highly symbolic ritual that has dated back to well before Konrad Qoryx, and is steeped in ceremony. The family home of Zürich is a large city of over 550,000 that sits on the Wiss Thur, an extension of the larger Thur river. While most of the Qoryxern are labourers, farmers or fishers, the wealthy have amassed a huge fortune in mining, and have always remained close to House Stafford of Rosenport due to its de facto rule over Goldshire, but has also remained very close with the Lord of Goldshire, due to the abundant resources in Goldshire. Always in favour of progress and efficiency, the well-armed, extremely well disciplined and well-trained Qoryxen Eisen Wache (Qoryxen Iron guard) is thought to be one of the best in Dienstad, and is best at fighting in rough or non-open terrain, especially in the Alpine Mountains, but falls short on amphibious and siege capabilities. The small Qoryxen Marine Wache (Qoryxen Naval Guard) is also well-equipped and very modern for its time, but lacks in size and ability by comparison to other, more maritime regions. Notably, Qoryxern generally do not partake in tourneys like the rest of the realm, preferring instead to orchestrate large, well-disciplined military parades in ceremonial uniforms. The Wachablösung in Zürich is a notable event that draws crowds into the Guardplatz of Ordensburg Zürich, where well-dressed soldiers change their guarding shifts.

Feel free to change the font I used, it was so it would easily stand out.

Herzogtum/Duchy - Herzog(Herzogin)/Duke(Duchess)
Fürstentum/Principality - Fürst(Fürstin)/Prince(Princess)
Grafschaft/County - Graf(Gräfin)/Count(Countess)
Nobles - Edler(Edle)/Lord(Lady)
Knights - Ritter(Frau)/Sir(Madam)
Young Lord - Junker/Master(Mistress)

Junkern and Rittern both do not carry "von" in their surnames, as their title is not hereditary, merely noble. Edlern and above are all hereditary, thus they carry "von" in their surname.

HOUSE NAME: House Huntley
WORDS: "Fury and Rath"
SIGIL: A flock of ravens surrounding a black shield charged with a dead weirwood, on a scarlet field (The Blackwood sigil from here for ease, i like it)
FAMILY HOME: Huntfall
LORD: Eddard Huntley
TITLES: Lord of Huntfall, Warden of the East
INITIAL TROOPS(up to .5% of pop): 7,000
INITIAL WARSHIPS(subtract 50 soldiers per ship): 20 galleys (1,000)
CITIES: http://s569.photobucket.com/user/United ... s.png.html
Piedmont - 15,000
Oldtown - 300,000
Huntfall - 400,000
Highgarden - 350,000
Stone Shore - 100,000
Hightower - 200,000
Blackwater - 75,000

FAMILY:
Lord of Huntfall, Eddard Huntley, 35
Lady of Huntfall, Arya, 29
-- Robett, 14
-- Galbart, 10
-- Natalia 8
-- Sansa 8
-- Rickard 5
-- Torrhen, 6 months

Ser Benjen Huntley of Golden Keep, 29
Lady Valerie, 26
-- Wyman, 8
-- Wendel, 5
-- Wylla, 1

Ser Harrion Huntley of Castle Piedmont, 21

House Huntley is a old and proud house from the Eastern peninsula, where they once ruled as Kings of the east, before submitting to the rule of the Kings of Dienstad, aiming to preserve their own power and the smallfolk under their rule. They maintain a small fleet for trade protection, and a moderately sized but very well equipped force of knights, pike-men and swordsmen and above all, highly skilled archers, benefiting from the ample farmland and trade that their numerous port cities and village bring in, but also the great woods and game upon which the House name and seat drew their inspiration from. House Huntley holds claim to the largest abundance of Forestland in the Kingdom, making them and their sworn vassals some of the most noted providers of furs and ships.

The current Lord of Huntfall and the East, Eddard Huntley is the second born son of Brandon Huntley and Wykka of Hightower. Both of his parents and his older brother, Rickon were taken by the bloody flux when Eddard was but 12, leaving him just his younger brother's Benjen, who now holds the command of the Golden Keep and Harrion, holding the command of Castle Piedmont, the westernmost point of Huntley control in the foothills of the Alpines. The loss of most of his family at a young age left Eddard a hard and ruthless man, though not unloving. He would do near anything for his family and his closest friends, though he holds no love for his enemies and will do anything to best them.

He is among the most capable swordsmen in the Kingdom, while only slightly above average with lance is a common sight at tourney's, alongside his brother and many smaller lords sworn to him. The east has been reluctantly loyal to King Robert and his predecessors, though now Lord Eddard see's a chance to raise both his stature and power within the Kingdoms, he waits only for the right opportunity to present itself.

((I went ahead and cleaned up the rest of the area to the east of the capitol. I didn't want to take anymore cities than anyone else so i made the last one (Piedmont) small, and intend it as a just a Castle, with the population representing the small folk in the area and not a actual city/village. If anyone has a issue with this, feel free to remove it and i will edit my history some))

Don't forget PA, you get to add a character with one of the following open titles:

King’s First Cousin:
Queen:
Hand of the King:
Lord of Golden Keep:

based on your story, I'd go with Queen(Robert married into your family to ensure loyalty) Lord of Golden Keep(a family member was put in charge of the fortress city that guards the Capital) or Hand of the King( his Hier was gifted the throne)

I'd suggest having one of your characters be the Queen, then you can decide how you want your family to handle Robert's Passing

I'd sooner go with Lord of the Golden Keep myself. Would rather be the House the people need to help them achieve their goals.

In that case, place Benjen as Lord of the Golden Keep, i'll edit someone else into my first post for the Castle of Piedmont. That should allow me to put all 3 of the Brothers in the capital. Might make for some interesting developments, im not going to roleplay the House as having any true love for Roberts family, though it wont prevent anything if sufficient promises are made :)

EDIT: Slight edit in to make Benjen the lord of Golden Keep and a new, younger brother (Harrion) Ser of Piedmont

HOUSE NAME: House Gilligan
WORDS: Justice and Strength
SIGIL: Blue and White chequered with a plain white bar in the middle with a red lions head. Basically like the bottom far right of this.
FAMILY HOME: Luton Hoo
LORD: Lord Andrew Gilligan
TITLES: High lord of the South, Lord of Luton Hoo and High Lord of Luton.
INITIAL TROOPS(up to .5% of pop): 5000
INITIAL WARSHIPS(subtract 50 soldiers per ship): 10
CITIES: http://imgur.com/rVGOxJ0
1: Riverwatch -200,000
2: Riverguard -300,000
3: Shoreditch -50,000
4: Isling -100,000
5: Luton -200,000
6: Southron -300,000

FAMILY:
Lord Andrew 45
Lady Noelle 42
-- Jason 20 (Married to Lady Sara of Riverguard, 19)
-- Anna 18 (unmarried)
-- Tyler 10

House Gilligan is an ancient house in the Southern lands, but wasn't always a powerful one. Though they have always been the Lords of Luton and Luton Hoo, it was House Ipping of Isling who ruled as Kings and queens of the south. By the time the Dienstadi kings has come to conquer the South, the Ippings were led by King Jontos the cruel, a malevolent and brutal ruler. House Gilligan led by Lord Adam had always vocally opposed King Jontos and grew in strength as Jontos vassals flocked to support the Gilligans in the removal of their cruel overlord. Thus, when the invasion of the South began, Jontos gathered what few lords remained loyal to him and marched north to fight the foreign invaders. However instead they were met by an army led by House Gilligan who defeated the Kings army and executed the King. As per prior agreements with the Dienstadi rulers, House Gilligan was elevated to high lordship of the South, while House Ipping was allowed to retain lordship of Isling. The new balance of power was sealed with the marriage of Jontos daughter to Lord Adams son Lord Kevan.

Since then, House Gilligan has ruled peacefully, only ever marching war to defend the Souths border at the twin rivers of Anson (Eastern river) and Loson (western river). Southernors do not like to travel far from their ancestral homes, and it is rare to find a Southerner anywhere beyond the capital. They are a strong but dependable people. House Gilligan maintains a small fleet as southerners have traditionally mistrusted the unpredictable nature of the seas, as such, the Souths cities boast some of the strongest port defences. While not posessing the large tracts of farmland other areas of the kingdom has been blessed with, House Gilligan boasts sizeable iron mins in the Souths heartlands which allow it (and it's allies) good opportunities to outfit armies and keep them supplied with arms.

This makes the south a dark horse in the political machinations of the kingdom. Lord Andrew favours no particular candidate and has no interest in achieving a higher political station. However, for the sake of preserving order in the realm (Order and stability is highly valued in the south) Lord Andrew would be willing to throw his weight behind one of the candidates should they prove worthy of backing. The Souths proximity to the capital and its easily defensible location make it a strong base of support.

However, the faction that loses Lord Andrews support may not have lost the South completely. House Ipping still broods over its ancient defeat and should the right offers be made to Lord Rodrick Ipping, could be persuaded to bring about a change in the management of the South.

(I think that's everything. This is the first RP post I have made in years and even then I was never that good, so apologies if my skills aren't so much rusty, more just not there...)

Just a quick update, I'm going to go ahead and make one of my characters The Queen(or Hand of the King) since we are still missing a lot of the important characters. Figured it would allow us to start with some troubles. Also, Lamoni and Wanderjar will probably be our last two kingdoms. Opening post will be out shortly after one more sign up

Just a thought i had, but perhaps we need to flesh out the "why?" on the Queens claim to the throne. Was Robert a bad person? Bad King? Or is she just power hungry?

Map placements: http://i.imgur.com/hiQvEfp.png?1

HOUSE NAME: Murchadha
WORDS: First in battle and fierce in slaughter; these hands are hostile to tyrants.
SIGIL: 9 Pointed Star/Nonagon, Colors; Purple, White, Crimson. Other colors often used; Gold with Emerald Green
FAMILY HOME: The Isle of the Nine Towers
LORD: Voprak Murchadha
TITLES: Great Keeper of the High Seas, High Obeja of the Deep Places(Leader of the traditional religion of the people of the Nine Towers), Guardian of the King's Waters

The House Murchadha is an infamous bloodline in Dienstad, the whispers are that it is not originally of Noble blood but rather an ancient compromise to sea-raiders for a measure of peace and security(entirely untrue?), though many would argue the people of the Nine Towers are nothing more than thieves, brigands and pirates loyal to none but each other(debatably even not this), and loyal to their heathen cult, but time and time again when the Golden throne has called the Murchadha have answered without question and given blood on the land and sea.

Beyond these periodic proofs of loyalty to the throne, the Murchadha rarely impose the laws of nation upon the people of the Nine Towers, instead they allow them to follow the laws of the Deep Places(moral codes set forth by the ancient religion of the people). The Murchadeans(as they are commonly known in uneducated circles) are generally a swarthy people, rarely have they ever ventured far from the coasts. They are excellent shipbuilders fashioning the most respect clinkers on the sea. Their own vessels utilizing a rigging unique to the seafaring peoples of the Kingdom, they protect this secret jealously and with reckless abandon of a mother protecting their child.
Murchadeans make their living by the sea; fishing, merchant trade, transport, raiding, and piracy. They are generally considered an unpredictable people, obtuse and obfuscated in their behavior. The word of a Murchadean to those who are familiar with them as a people is as sure as the next sunrise, however getting a Murchadean to speak plainly is another matter entirely.
Often those in the Houses who employ spies with utilize the Murchadean sea network to send messages, as the Murchadeans take great pride in keeping confidential the names of those who hire them for anything, and indeed even what they are hired to do.

They vicious warriors on the sea, and fierce raiders on the coast. Death is an honor, and open cowardice is considered a sin, though that does not mean they are reckless indeed one can sum up their views as thus "The brave will have their songs sung, but the cunning will sing their own!" Common weapons of the People of the Nine Towers, Silver currency of the Murchadeans

While I have no RPs under this name. I have RP'd in the past, and a cookie for my GD compatriots who can recognize me by my syntax. Alright, after a minor background check, you are good to go. I have added your claims to the main map in the OP, but I might have butchered the nine pointed star of your House. My bad.

I would suggest you can be the King's Family, but I am not sure how to factor in the scattered sea pirates ended up leading the Rebellion that put King Robert into power. I will take suggestions though.

If you have any ideas or questions about things not addressed, feel free to bring them up. Most of your characters in the Capital will start in the Throne Room, waiting for the announcement by the Hand of the King

I would suggest you can be the King's Family, but I am not sure how to factor in the scattered sea pirates ended up leading the Rebellion that put King Robert into power. I will take suggestions though.

Robert could've easily used the water to quickly move forces loyal to robert stealthily from one place to the other, or the Murchadaens themselves merely popping up and offering threat to the home lands of opposing factions who dared weaken their own defenses to oppose Robert, or using the Murchadaens and their likely associations with sailors of other ilk as spies...or a combination of many factors. Leading the rebellion militarily would be less likely than I would springing up up unexpectedly in tenacious support. Like when you hit someone and discover the guy in the corner you weren't paying attention to would die before he let the guy you hit stub his toe.
As to the reasoning behind, I would suggest given the character I intend for the people of the nine towers as a whole-- make the motivation for them backing Robert something so odd and not well known or fully misunderstood as to border on the arcane.
As for the 9 pointed star, meh. I have one I drew but I drew it 1000x1000 and have no idea how to resize to fit that little square.

That makes more sense then trying to shoehorn you into an illogical role. Also, I think you might be natural enemies off House Mokane, who are also Sea faring peoples who focus on espionage and politics rather than brute force. Or natural Allies. It will be fun to see how things develop.

Also, your Star looks better than mine so i edited the map with it in there: http://imgur.com/Fwn7UOI

Trust the Mokans to be armed even when among their allies

The fact that the Mokans hadn't faced the same fate was a testament to their preparedness, or perhaps paranoia

I mean, Voprak can be Roberts cousin somehow, or really anything-- I mean to take a page from the movie the Negotiator he could've named Voprak the Hand and consequently the heir specifically because he was aware the Murchadha has no designs directly on the throne--though being of a minority religion would make the latter unlikely.
Sorry to join with a design more as a strong side dish than an entrée.
But the Sun as bright as it is still needs a sky to shine in.

As for the house Mokane, yeah I saw that and considered it advantageous to what I already had in mind. Murchadha guile to desire and designs, and brute as the instrument. Mokane would likely be more conventional in the desire and design department, but more subtle in the instrument department.

While I recognize a similarity between my 9 Towers and the Ironborn of the inspired story, they are much less an inspiration than say the implications of hidden cults of Dagon and Chthullu in Lovecraft's writing, mixed with the sailor spirit of Sinbad and such.
Not getting all horror writey, merely the idea that their motivations are their own and where coincide with the motivations of outsiders is often conincidence.

I absolutely couldn't get that star to go, thanks.

Okay, holy damn. Both the amount of stuff that just went down, followed by me finally watching S6e10 of GOT....I just can't handle it! :p

Also, House Black killing Lord Johannes' nephew-in-law Tommen of Goldshire is just a bad decision on their part. No matter what happens when the dust settles, House Black will not be looked upon favourably by House Qoryx and the mountainlands.

So, will Valyrian Steel (or something similar) be a thing in this universe?

Also, just preparation for my upcoming post. House Huntley will at least partially represent the Old Gods in this world, with the only difference from the books being that Knighthood's are a thing. I'm assuming the Mad King would've been a follower of the Seven so i am using that as some historical basis for Eddard joining Robert's rebellion.
In other words, conservatives are generous with their own money, and liberals are generous with other peoples money.
