“Each revolution must be assessed in its own context, each had a distinctive impact. The revolutions spread from one point to another. They interacted to a limited extent. . . . The drama of each revolution unfolded separately. Each had its own heroes, its own crises. Each therefore demands its own narrative.”
Peter N. Stearns, 1848: The Revolutionary Tide in Europe
The world was awoken by the upheavals of titanic proportions of 1848. The explosion of people's expectations of their governments, quality of life and prosperity has led to revolutionary calls that have been heard by some, but not by all. Roused by this anti-climax, the world once again looks on the brink of revolution, reaching a full circle.
Europe, still at the centre of the civilised world, clings on to its past and explores the revolutionary future. Its imperialism has brought other new ways of thinking to Asia, where new powers are rising. The New World is still relatively fresh, but is getting quick to cotton on to the new ways and ideals. Africa, at the back of the line, is rapidly approaching a new dawn.
Be it a monarchy, republic or of a unique sort, you must lead your country to its new role and future. In a world of competing ambitions, no one can afford to be left behind.
