Humans, sapient creatures and other beings ahoy! Welcome to the 62nd Baptism of Fire, hosted by the Fiefdom Soccer Federation (FSF) and Federation Royale Quebecoise du Football (퀘벡왕립축구협회 / FRQF)! This tournament, first of three WCC tournaments, marks the beginning of the 75th Edition of the NationStates World Cup, where the 32 nations will brave the cold and snow in icy realms of Cosumar and Royal Kingdom of Quebec.

This historic and prestigious competition, the once-only chance for your nation when entering, is reserved to teams that have not entered a World Cup before and thus without a WCC ranking. With the Baptism of Fire as the opportunity, one is able to gain their KPB points that should come handy during their World Cup endeavours and help getting warmed up before the qualifying phase.

With no ranks, all 32 teams entering the Calania region of Atlantian Oceania will start with equal chance and hopes of winning the competition. There are 2 factors that play a huge role in your chances with the World Cup : Roleplay and luck. With the two combined, it is safe to say that you can never write your team off, while also be encouraged to post your roster and RP to your best. If things don't go that way, it's entirely fine! Sometimes things happen and so it goes with it, like life.

In this thread, you should post everything in-character (IC) associated with the Baptism of Fire. That includes, and is not limited to, the rosters and roleplays. The co-hosts will also be posting their nation info, stadiums, results and possible RPing challenges on their half of the Baptism of Fire. There are some things that one should not post, however, and that is anything out-of-character. Whether it being notes, comments, placeholders (this one especially a big no no) and whatnot, should not be posted here. They have to be instead directed to the World Cup Discussion thread or hosts via Telegram. Unnecessary out-of-character comments will result turning your RP bonus into 0.

New to NS Sports? Here are some tips for you.

First of all, if you are new to the NS Sports forum, you really should read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying. This guide presents you a general idea on what to do and how tournaments in NS Sports work. In case you have any additional questions, feel free to ask on the Discussion Thread (again, linked above) or send one of the hosts a telegram.

Now that you have already taken that step, you should start thinking in a roster for your team. A roster is -in its simplest form- a list of the 11 players in your starting lineup, their positions, manager/head coach, and also the players in your bench or reserves. Some participants often include some other information aimed at enriching the RPing experience and opportunities, for example, additional information on their players, coaching staff, their backgrounds, clubs, style of play, strenghts and weaknesses and anything else deemed to be of interest or anything you want others to know about your team. There is no limit regarding the number of players you can include in your roster, and there's no gender- or species-based restriction of any sort, either, with several past World Cup champions and other established nations currently competing or having competed with all-male, all-female, mixed-gender teams, teams comprised by monks, and also teams made up of elves, sentient bears and ponies, among several others.

Next up, you may want to include a style modifier for your team in your roster. A style modifier is a number ranging from -5 to +5 which will be inputted into the scorinator and will also serve to give others an idea of your style of play. Teams with negative style modifiers tend to be more defense-focused and will concede (on average) fewer goals at the cost of having more trouble at scoring goals. On the other hand, if your team is more offense-focused, then you should choose a positive style mod. Teams that play offensively tend to score more goals on average...but also tend to concede more goals in return. For those of you who would rather a more balanced style, a neutral style mod of 0 is also available. Teams will also be assigned a style mod of 0 if they don't state a style modifier.

Okay, so you already have a list of players and have chosen a style mod for your team. Good. Now pay attention to this part, because this is one of the most important things to include in your roster as it will have an effect on your opponents' RPs. Ladies and gentlemen, now we present to you the RP Permissions Box:

Code: Select all
My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my goalscorers: Yes/No
Godmod scoring events: Yes/No
RP injuries to my players: Yes/No
Godmod injuries to my players: Yes/No
Hand out yellow cards to my players: Yes/No
Hand out red cards to my players: Yes/No
Godmod other events: Yes/No

The box above will be the tool enabling you to tell your opponents what you are willing to allow them to do, as well as what you are not allowing them to do. Please copy and paste it somewhere into your roster indicating your preferences as well as any restrictions for every option. Now let's review the meaning of each of these options:

Choose my goalscorers allows your opponents to choose which player(s) score your team's goal(s), should they RP the match before you do. Almost everyone allows this option since the most common form of roleplay in this forum is the traditional match summary/report, and it would be really difficult to write one of those without identifying the goalscorers. Godmod scoring events enables your opponents to RP goals that are scored in an unrealistic way or not likely to happen in reality.

The RP injuries to my players option is pretty self-explanatory: it allows your opponents to injure your players. However, most participants who allow others to injure their players will also set restrictions on the severity and causes of those injuries, thus retaining some extent of control on how badly injured their player is and future consequences and impacts of that injury on their teams. Just like "Godmod scoring events" for unlikely/unrealistic goals, Godmod injuries to my players refers to your opponents RPing injuries on your players but caused in less common and/or unrealistic ways. This option is generally used for more drastic injuries than those of the standard injury option, ranging from rendering your players unable to play the remainder of the tournament, ending their careers, or even killing them. That causes this option to be restricted by most players.

Yellow cards and red cards are an important part of the game, as yellow cards are handed out to players who aren't following the rules of the game as a warning, with red cards being handed out either after a second yellow card or as a result of a particularly severe violation of the rules or unsportsmanlike behaviour. Those players that are shown a red card are sent off the field, forcing their team to continue the remainder of the match with less players. Basically, if you choose "yes" to any or both of those options, you are allowing your opponents to enact such disciplinary actions against your players in their RPs. However, you can also set limits on the number of those cards if your players are less prone to carrying out actions that cause them to be booked and/or sent off.

Finally, Godmod other events refers to other unrealistic and/or unlikely events not related with goals or injuries. This can include from severe weather conditions, events by fans in the stands, to the opening of a portal to another dimension at the center of the pitch in the middle of the match. There are several things that can fall into this option, therefore you might deem it appropriate to set some limits for your opponents.

RP Challenges

With this Baptism of Fire, there will be 2 RP challenges. One provided for the Cosumarite half and other Quebecois half, it will be unveiled with the IC information in next ~72 hours. Stay tuned.....

All-Star Match

Separate to the RP challenges, all nations are welcome to submit an in-character RP on somebody from your national team, whether coach, player or even a mascot. Those selected, after a long period of review, will be selected to play as the 'Team of Ice and Snow', which is going to be the team of all-stars from the latest joining the fun World Cup offers. This team will be playing a joint selection of the best players from both Quebecois and Cosumarite National teams, who will be teaming up in a Cocodragon XI or 'True North Combine', in the All-Star matched scheduled following the completion of this Baptism of Fire.

It is to be noted that you are not obligated nor forced to write an RP submission, and that the hosts will decide the selection of the teams depending on who's available and fitting for the challenge.

ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC

Transportation

To arrive in Quebec you'll likely just want to fly in to the city that you will be playing in. The 8 cities going to be hosting the tournament, with all of them possessing a major airport served by most major airlines, including the giant Quebecois duo of Spiritair and Aeroquebec groups. Landing to Quebec, however, is still going to be a huge challenge: International flights are permitted to land and take off, but expect many delays on both departure and arrival due to mother nature behaving madly.

If you insist on arriving via waterways, poor you. Due to the worst winter in 100 year's time this Winter, most ports (obviously not including ports at California City and ones on shores of Terra Henrius) are frozen and won't be used for transportational purposes.

While travelling inside country, there are main methods you can use for this. The railways here isn't as quick as it'd be with other nations (the maximum speed being 225km for the fastest train service), but they are extremely punctual/on-timerelatively punctual compared to other methods (one or two-hour delays are better than what you'd get in other options, with this bad of a weather), popularcramped (best option out of any right now) and frequent (one train per 30 minutes, with more coming due to demand), making it a very cost-effective and attractive option. Even with such situations the services in Quebec National Railways (QNR) are high-quality and well-maintained, so don't worry about your comfort while riding trains.

Quebec does possess a strong auto industry and cars are somewhat prevalent, so you can travel via cars if interested. This, however, is a very risky option for travelers due to icy and snowy road conditions in almost all highways and driving is not recommended. Same thing with buses.

As for aeroplanes, Flying between those cities are not recommended at all, due to weather conditions at all airports but California City and Gotham, making the flights very risky for even the most veteran of pilots.

Lodging

There will be some hotels of high-calibre (at least 4 star ones) available in those cities. However, those 4 cities being medium-sized cities, there will be some issues. The same will not be guaranteed with the visiting fans as there will be mass influx of Quebecois citizens as well, to watch the games. Therefore it is recommended to make reservations 3-4 months ahead of the tournament, in order to guarantee your reservation in the hotels around the city.

If you are still in trouble of finding hotel or motel suites, there will be hotels, motels and other modes of accomodation available at your expense, on towns slightly far away from the venues(50km-100km). For more information please contact Tourism Quebec or for more specific information any tourism agency of the city/cities you'll be off to(OOC: TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec if you have any questions or so).

Weather

Mainland Royal Kingdom of Quebec is located in Temperate and Polar regions, with the cities located in varying degrees of climate zones so all 4 seasons can be experienced each year, but with different extremes. For those visiting anywhere but Gotham or California City it's very likely that the snowfall will be extremely frequent. As this tournament is ICly held during January, in middle of worst snowstorm in 100 years (with one the 2 years ago breaking a 50-year record), temperatures will be altered to following:

California City:
It'll still be fine for California City. With snowstorm passing right to the north of the very southwestern corner of Manitoba province, all's good and usual. 15'C to 25'C, so get your surfboards and sunscreens ready!
Rouyn-Noranda: -18'C to -27'C, with lots of wind and snow
Sarnia: Temperatures usually stayed around -5'C in average day, with actual temperature being lot warmer due to Sarnia's abundance in manufacturing and chemical factories providing all the warmth and smoke for its lonely, winter days. The proximity to the Kamikwajaang River also helps. BUT, due to the snowstorm and whatnot, it'll be around...-12'C to -16'C.
Quebec City: -24'C to -35'C. Not windy, but lots of ice and snow (70cm/day)
Charlottetown: -8'C to -12'C. Relatively warm. very windy and heavy snowfall
Iqaluit: -45'C to -55'C. Good luck

This will not affect the train services, though it'll do more than enough job of freezing people up, as all of the games will be held outdoors.

Also this won't apply to Gotham, which is a temperate location but is located far south of mainland Quebec.

Languages

There are three official languages in this nation: English, French and Korean. All 3 languages are taught in school curriculum and with great depth, causing most of the population to be at least trilingual. Additionally, in this part of the nation there are some other First Nations languages being recognised as regional languages and are used+learned to great depth in schools, so please note this when you're RPing in Quebec. Most Quebecois you'll meet are extremely polyglot and that will show with way they speak.

When it comes to linguistic status on city that you're RPing on/about, you're more than welcome to TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec about it.

Money

The national currency of Quebec is Quebecois Dollar, which is fairly expensive. The current exchange rate is $3 NS for 1 Quebecois pound. With the nation being rich with huge economy, almost everyone will have at least has a good deal of money here. So please don't feel surprised if the products are much more expensive here than back home, excluding alcohol.

Things you'll need in your stay, prices in NS Dollars (NS$) and Quebecois Pounds (£)

-Hotel: NS$ 35-400, £12-135
-Public transport in the cities: NS$2-$5, £0.7-1.7
-Bus transport to different cities: NS$5-50, £1.7-17
-Train transport to different cities: NS$6-80, £2-28
-Ferry between lakes: NS$5-$12, £1.7-4
-Flights between cities: NS$65-150, £22-50
-Average cost of food: NS$12-45, £4-15
-Sports tickets: NS$60-600, £20-200
-Bottle of water: NS$9, £3 (Sale of bottled water extremely limited, with public fountains providing very low interest for the people)
-Alcohol: NS$3-150, £1-50 per keg
-Public phone: NS$1.5 per call, £0.5 per call

Cuisine

Quebecois cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change. Originating from dominant Korean and elegant French cuisine that came with settlers, as well as materials and existing food of the First Nations living in the area, Quebecois cuisine has evolved through a complex interaction of the natural environment and different cultural trends and is the best mix of it all.

Quebecois cuisine is largely based upon rice, other diverse kinds of grains, vegetables, and meats(in this area moose and caribou, and to rare cases bears). The meals are noted for the number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice. It varies on the personal preferences but often in every meal they eat at least some form of maple syrup, Kimchi and/or bread. Commonly used ingredients include sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). In this part of the nation, fish are caught off the rivers and lakes to be eaten in whatever the way one prefers as well.

Ingredients and dishes vary by region to region, with many. Many regional dishes have become national, and dishes that were once regional have proliferated in different variations across the country.
Meals are regulated by cultural etiquette, which are very hard to follow for even the average Quebecois due to all the processes they take.

TG The Royal Kingdom of Quebec for any questions.

Religion

Quebec is a religiously diverse country, though divided when it comes to dominant regions. In the cities where the Baptism of Fire will be hosted, First Nations' religions are widely practiced, with Quebecois Catholic Church and Buddhism right behind. Due to these differences, all three levels of Government keeps some separation from any religions, though they still hold some influences in those levels and receive lots of funding. It is also not recommended to argue about politics or religion in Quebec, as political and religious apathy is not known....for most part.

Laws

Culturally and socially, Quebec is in bit of a mix. Another handy chart will be in place to explain some of Quebec's laws in place:

Recreational drugs: Legal, though selling them without licence can lead to up to $10,000 in fines and 5 years in jail.
Hard drugs: Illegal, with punishments up to $50,000 in fines and 15 years in jail for possession and consumption of the drugs
Prostitution: Legal, though people's attitudes about it will be very conservative in this part of the nation
Pornography: Legal, aside from child pornography(applies to any pornographic videos or anything else starring people up to 18 years of age). Possession of child pornography will land you straight in jail for 5 years, while production and distribution of it can lead to potential death sentence. So, don't try it as it's a big no-no.
Legal age for tobacco: Varies (16 in Val d'Or and Rouyn-Noranda, 19 in Churchill and Winnipeg, 18 in rest)
Legal age for alcohol: 16
Maximum BAC to drive: 0.03.
Saying the word 'Coconut': Legal

All the foreign citizens caught under the Federal and/or Provincial law will not be extradited, unless of a special order given by the Emperor, His Imperial Majesty the Jacques IX.

RP Challenge : Ice and Snow

Royal Kingdom of Quebec, as you already know by now, is a nation well known for its diverse geography from temperate to polar regions, as well as its extremely cold weather. This gives people advantage in that there'd be cool summers where they'd be able to actually not have to worry that much about sweltering heat. With that being said, the Quebecois State is going through a particularly tough challenge as they are currently in middle of a worst snowstorm in 100 years. Even with arsenal of snow shovelers and other machineries to deal with winter, as well as the Quebecois people having already used to the environment, this has made their lives much tougher than expected.

At the same time, the Quebecois State is still getting used to their southern penal colony in Terra Henrius. Terra Henrius, where Gotham is located, was first acquired by Quebec after the Syndicatian part of the Mertagne was divided into 2 and sold off to Quebec and Unified Sunrise Islands. Those in Quebec City, who thought that Terra Henrius is a great patch of land on a rapidly desertified region, decided to turn it into a massive penal colony where there'd be minimal authorities and slave labour projects to supposedly reeducate criminals who have committed horrible criminal offence. 8 years after the acquisition, Terra Henrius has turned into what people expected it'd be: well-developed, profitable and with lots of agricultural products to exploit off. At the same time it's been with minimal authorities and turned into North Ruland where homicide rate's very high.

With this in mind, here will be some major delays, incidents and even worse events happening throughout one's stay in Royal Kingdom of Quebec, whether you be in Mainland or Terra Henrius. They'll be posted as mentions right next to your game results, a separate RP posted by myself or a side mention on a results post if it's a thing affecting not just one region but across the nation.

Feel free to telegram me for any additional information about the winter storm and/or Terra Henrius.

California City - The Cannabis Capital of the World

California City is the second-largest host city at only the 895,000 (city) and 1.85 million (metropolitan area, which overlaps that of Southern part of Winnipeg), but it's not without character. Located in the Southwestern corner of Manitoba province, where an hour-long drive from Winnipeg over the mountain range gets you into a very sunny, warm place, it stands as a city and region unique from rest of the country. Blessed by the sun, climate and wonderful soil, California region also stands out as the producer of nation's 45% of marijuana, which should translate to around 13.5% of Multiverse's weed production. Grown in plantations big and small, one can drive through the area and find the plantations anywhere one wishes to find (OOC: Think of cotton plantations in Southern US), showing its grand scale.

When it comes to the city itself, California City is the warmest city in Quebec, with over 35% of the people speaking Spanish or Portuguese as their primary language. The people here, blessed by sun and warmth, play lot more sports involving water and outdoor sports, causing Winnipeg Spartak to be one of the most, if not the most popular team on LigAnaia R49. Even right now the weather is 15-20'C above celsius, causing many vacationers to spend their time in Southwestern corner of Quebec. Make sure to enjoy your stay when you're around, because you'll need to get adjusted to rest of Quebec later!

Trojanajara - The Contraceptives Capital of the World

Trojanajara is a city in Ontario, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, 1,500 kilometres northwest of Kingston and 890 kilometres east of Winnipeg. With about 178,000 inhabitants, Trojanajara is one of the province's smaller cities and the second-smallest city to hold a match in this Baptism of Fire. However, it is one of the richest and most connected of Ontarian-Frontenacois cities, due to its significance and isolated location: the city is known for the world-class contraceptives company Trojana Co. (responsible for 97% of Multiverse's contraceptives market share) its associated sports club Trojana Condommakers FC. It is also the home of Trojanajara Country Music Festival, a huge fest that brings over 1 million people every year, for 7 days of country music, food and lifestyle twice a year - July and January. Aside from that, the city lacks attractions due to its small size and isolation - the nearest cities in Thunder Bay and Sault St. Henri are 6 hours away by drive or train. Known for hyper-conservative but heavily loyal fans.

Accomodations: Trojanara Central Hotel, Manju House Trojanajara, Ontarian Court Lakehead, Billy's Country Bar and Buffet, Trojana Museum, International Contraceptives Museum

Sarnia - The Chemoville

Surrounded by two of 5 Great Lakes of Quebec, Sarnia (also known as Quebecois Stoneshore) is the city with its own uniqueness in it. Built on local Aboriginal land in 1850s after a longstanding agreement, it has developed as an important city for Quebecois industries, most notably that of refining, chemical and motor industries. In spite of changes, the city of 510,000 maintains a small-town feel with its ancient architecture, some dating back the Queen Arlene days in late 1800s, while coexisting with factories and high-risers built and occupied by those companies. Like with Trojanajara it is a very dreary and boring place to be at, because of its paltry entertainment options. This, however, causes the Sarnians to devote their hours in their local sports team. Whether it be R49's Chemo-Metallurg, QHL's Spark or QBL's express or even Sarnia Tech Spartans (more or so basketball, but football's sometimes followed) doesn't matter; they will buy into it.

Accomodations: Steeltown Hotel, Irontown Villa and Resort, Dolsan Kimchi House, Hanryeo Hoetjib Sashimi Place

Rouyn-Noranda - The Barren Plains

One of the great pleasures of Quebec, it is the juxtaposition of cultures between the four solitudes within Canada. Through a landscape that is both virgin and scarred from nearly a century of extracting wealth from the mighty Great Tyrian Plains, this very windy, snowy and isolated city of 1.85 million people is memorable and standing out on its own.

The local Crees and Inuits are everywhere both in town and at the stadium, and the unique, passionate Aboriginal flavour in rival city of Val d'Or Val-d'Or, with the city itself being located at the native land and natives being 56% of the population, holds the torch of Abitibi-Temiscamingue province as ICly Minnesota of Quebec. The people and the area itself may be economically and mentally depressed, but are proud of their own cultures and will cheer for their teams to death. This diversity and uniqueness of following and thoughts in the city and the 4-million province in general has produced many professional athletes in sports where physicality is demanded, as well as lots of writers and workers in performing arts. It's also on its rise as a winter sports mecca, as well as native-led tourism industry, of Quebec.

With football, there's no place like Rouyn-Noranda. Due to lack of other sports team on summer season, Rouyn-Noranda area lives and breathes on its football: It goes like this: High school teams are usually played in 5,000-seaters (a rarity in Quebec), club football attended by hundreds of scouts and its college football team, the AIT Vikings (OOC: think of Green Bay, but with a huge city), ruling as the king of the sports when there's no challenger in Huskies hockey games.

This is no different on the actual games at Imperial Copper Stadium. The high capacity, high-energy crowd, and run-down charm lends a very cool old-school atmosphere to the 87-year old arena, making a true experience for football fans from other regions. With its proximity, right in middle of Abitibi Tech University in Noranda, more economically-depressed part of the downtown, it turns into utter madness whenever there's a game at the 92,300-seater with tailgates, house parties and orgies taking place on the 30km-radius. The stadium food consists of traditionally hot, substantial meat and fish dishes such as Flæskesteg (roast pork with crackling) or Kogt torsk (poached cod), but has lots of choices of alcohol and marijuana to support the diet. The music choices on the stadium are usually among the best in the nation, and the unique nature of Rouyn-Noranda fans make the game experiences here exceptional.

Quebec City - Capitol

The nation's capital, most historic city, home of the Royal House of Jeongs, Royal Parliament and many government institutions. Bastion of traditions, Korean-Franco pride and classical antiquity. Quebec City is called the City of Light, and is one of the most romantic cities in the world. It is the national and global centre of culture, art, fashion and cuisine, as well as intellectuals who have come from all across the world, making it a true metropolis among global citizens. Culturally it is still with a strong Franco-Korean component and heritage; though significant influence does come from overseas, they often are absorbed into the greater Quebecois culture to be a part of it. It is a true place to be, and for anyone with ambitions and dreams of succeeding as intellectual or artisan, Quebec City is where you strive to find yourself in the position.

Charlottetown - The Garden Island

Known for its potatoes and beautiful scenery on countryside, Prince Laurent Island is an island small in population with only 350,000 people. The island is a moderately-sized one, with most people spending their hours on key industries of agriculture (most notably potatoes and dairy products), fisheries and tourism. Its people are humble and simple, preferring to stay in their native isle or somewhere near in Maritime Quebec.

With sports its people are highly passionate in attendance and love of football. Since the early 70s the Islanders have been among the most supported out of all teams in a market its size, and its occasional successes in the former Q-League has made the team and island a small star among metropolis-based giants in the league.

Iqaluit - Land of Ice and Snow

Iqaluit is a city of 750,000 people, most of them Inuits. With average winter temperature of -27'C, It is by far the coldest major city in Quebec, located right in the Esquarian Arctic. Therefore, most of the transportation is done through subways and underground hallways, which are often well known for being insulating, as well as luxurious. The city is extremely well known for its love of hockey, having 25,000 hockey arenas and rinks in a city of 750,000, but football is well-followed with Iqaluit Red Army drawing huge attendance figures.

Gotham - Heaven and Hell on Earth

If Montreal is the city of dreams, and Quebec City the city of history, then Gotham (formerly known as Magnaeus) is the City of Nightmares. Ever since the fall of the Inevitable-part of Mertagne and the Quebecois colonisation, its history is a long and bloody tale of crime, debauchery (also called as Jeruselemism) and anarchism. So it is of no surprise to anyone here that it has the highest homicide rate of any city in Atlantian Oceania- barring Ruland because Ruland is just another level of things. It has suffered disasters of all kinds and is currently home to heroes, civilian polices, villains and of course corrupted people. For those here to attend the Baptism of Fire must remember that they need to stay in groups and of course only their stadium, restaurant or hotel 'cause their safety cannot be guaranteed in case they move out of time.

Welcome, all 32 foreign delegations, to the Fiefdom of Cosumar

...

We are a kingdom in northeastern Atlantian Oceania near Audioslavia, Thatius and Western Sunrise Islands. The current year of our calendar is 1006. Over a millennium since Cosumarite civilization first dawned with 5800 shipwrecked settlers of unknown origin and diverse ethnicity. The current population is approximately 900 million. Our government is a constitutional monarchy led by the benevolent King James II (61) and beloved Queen Charlotte (51).

CULTURE: Cosumar is known for its wide-ranging civil freedoms (including very liberal attitudes on sex and recreational drugs), obsessive space exploration, and harmonious balance between nature preservation and technological advancement. According to the WA Census, Cosumar has the best Human Development Index in Atlantian Oceania and is second-most scientifically-advanced. 70% of Cosumarites are atheist, agnostic or otherwise irreligious and our government is completely secular. Of the remaining 30%, many adhere to Nordic paganism or other ancient native religions (13%). There are also small Buddhist, Christian, Muslim and Hindu populations (8% combined). Cosumarites are stereotyped as looking down on religion as "primitive mythology", and while that is not completely unfounded, you will find Cosumarites are even better known for being very welcoming of other cultures because of our own ethnically diverse origins. Cosumar is deeply cultured, with vibrant art and music scenes thriving in the historic urban areas. Ramusok's Renaissance Art and Heavy Metal undergrounds, for example, are internationally notorious. You can read more about your host city's culture below.

GEOGRAPHY & TRAVEL: Cosumar consists of a large landmass called Cosumarus (for context, roughly 70% the size of Australia) and a smaller landmass Klyde's Isle in its eastern waters. Together, they make a shape that is often compared to an alligator's open mouth and a pear about to be swallowed up by it. The land is divided into 21 provinces, historically known as "Fiefs". The Fiefdom also encompasses several extraterrestrial colonies (we mentioned our obsessive space exploration, right?). Please refer to these maps to observe the various cities and regions of Cosumar. Cosumar has a diverse array of landscapes. In general, temperature increases as you move from the semi-tropical southwest up to the northeastern taiga. Population is the densest on the eastern coast and sparsest in the central desert. You can read more about the climate and geography of specific cities below. However, as you will note in the RP Challenge, the Fiefdom is currently experiencing a record-cold winter, so every location will be colder than usual. Travel to population centers is made simple by our innovative TransCosumar Hyperloop, a system of high-speed monorails that safely zips around the country at speeds exceeding 700 miles per hour. Your teams' tickets have already been reserved, with private seating.

LANGUAGE: Most Cosumarites have chips implanted in their brain that allow them to process many of the world's major languages, so communication should seldom be a problem when out touring. Because Cosumar was born from a diverse set of heritages and welcomes many immigrants, this was helps everybody could communicate efficiently. The default language is English, but Swedish, Welsh, Vloo, Spanish, Esperanto, Norwegian, Finnish, German, Latvian, Slovene, and Japanese all have regions where they are prevalently spoken. A patchwork dialect dubbed "Cosumarite" is also heard here and there, but it is more of a mash-up of English and Nordic tongues than a language of its own.

FOOTBALL/SOCCER: Association Football is extremely popular in Cosumar as both a spectator and recreational sport, first in the Fiefdom in both regards - just ahead of Gridiron Football and Basketball. The COCANEFA Harlighet Ligan ("Glory League") is the highest level of the sport in Cosumar with 18 clubs. The Harlighet Ligan, which also competes in the COCANEFA Cup and UICA tournaments, dominates the Cosumarite sporting landscape. Read about the most recent season here. Two additional tiers (the 18-team Sekundar Ligan and 22-team Tredje Ligan) round out the CosumarLigan system. Further down, hundreds of clubs compete in regional lower leagues. As our domestic league has grown in prominence in recent years, the talent of our national team has improved - and is now in the world's Top 15. The national team, Cosumar Ligans and this very tournament are run by the sprawling Fiefdom Soccer Federation (FSF). The FSF has invested heavily in promoting this tournament. Even without their team playing, Cosumarites will go crazy for a WCC tournament being played on home soil and attend the these BoF matches in droves. Measures have also been taken to accommodate foreign fans in all four host cities to make the process even easier for ticketholders than normal tourists.

RP Challenge: Dragons!

Just in case all the information above and below doesn't provide enough roleplaying idea-fodder, all nations playing in Cosumar (groups E-H and the Final) may also involve the following into their RPs for a slight scoring bonus:

This competition is called the Baptism of Fire. But for this edition, with northeastern neighbors Quebec and Cosumar both suffering their coldest winters in recent memory, the "Baptism of Ice" may be more appropriate. The snowstorm afflicting Cosumar's northern peninsula is particularly severe and, for the first time in modern recorded history, has forced many of the famous Cosumarite Azure Dragons to migrate southwards out of the vast nature reserve that encompasses their ancestral habitat. So as they start to fly into the more inhabited regions of Cosumar in unprecedented numbers to escape the blizzards, several unforeseen consequences might unfold in the host cities that are preparing to host Baptism of Fire matches.......

Another tidbit of note is that the southward migration of the endemic Cosumarite Azure Dragons may cause a clash with the warmer range of the Cocodragon. Meetings between the common pesky Cocodragon and awe-inspiring Azure Dragons have rarely been documented as their ranges do not overlap. The winter storm may force them to interact for the first time. Might be another event that could have implications for your visiting teams.

Please click this link for more detail about Cosumar's two species of dragon.

Host Cities & Venues

Group E

RAMUSOK, RAMUSOK FIEF

The capital city. Home of the royal family and King's Congress. Epicenter of multiple historic dynasties. Bastion of knowledge and creativity. Diverse and eccentric, yet clean and elegant. Ramusok is the crown jewel of Cosumar, the pinnacle of a thousand years of Cosumarite civilization, and one of the finest cities in the Multiverse. As a global city, people of all kinds live here, though the city does still have a bit of a Swedish component leftover from the old Albertsson dynasty, evident in some of the place names. Usually pleasantly moderate, but with the record-cold winter, temperatures are currently around 20F (-7 C).

Tourism: If you appreciate history, Ramusok has much to offer: from the decadent Royal Palace at Område av Storslagenhet, to the iconic Thomas Street, to the ancient jewel-studded Monolith of Lyra, shrouded in mystery. There are centuries-old libraries and museums everywhere. Yet Ramusok also boasts some of the most stunning modern architecture in the world, coexisting with the ancient in harmonic balance. Just see the stunning all-glass resorts and offices overlooking the water on Azure Lane. Or the Forest of Lamneth - the largest urban nature park in Cosumar. The nightlife is extravagant thanks to the young and "hip" population and many prestigious universities in town. Make sure to catch some of the live music at night - there are venues specifically dedicated to genres ranging from black metal to neoclassical to indie pop to avant-garde jazz.

Venue: Fire River Arena (80,000) - One of the oldest and most historic stadiums in Cosumar. Fire River Arena was the home of the Cosumar National Team for its first five World Cups (51-55) prior to construction of Leviathan Arena for World Cup 56. Fire River Arena still hosts the first home World Cup Qualifying match each cycle out of tradition, as well as the odd friendly. Domestically, it is the home of the Harlighet Ligan's Ramusok United. The club's supporters fill the arena with blue shirts each weekend. It got its curious name from a local legend. The Sampson River, which runs into the ocean just a mile away from the stadium, was a key tactical location in the battles of ancient Cosumar. When Mikael The Magnificent completed his conquest of the area, he was said to have kept miles of its shoreline in flames as a sign of sheer intimidation. He was even said to have dumped such a quantity of explosives into the river that flames danced upon the waters for two whole weeks. A retractable roof and heated pitch should ward off the worst of the wintry effects.

Matches: Stacoco vs. The Island Formerly Known as Tasmania (MD1), The Island Formerly Known as Tasmania vs. Savalen (MD2), Greater Cascadia vs. The Island Formerly Known as Tasmania (MD3), and the Final

SURPRONUK, PAROUGAN FIEF

Surpronuk is the smallest host city at "only" 2 million, but it is not without character. Located in the far north of Cosumar and surrounded on all sides by mountains and nature reserve, it remains more isolated and homogenous than most Cosumarite cities. It is the most Nordic city in Cosumar, with 65% of people speaking Norwegian or Swedish as their primary language. It is one of the northernmost cities of over a million in Atlantian Oceania and is known for its frigid, snowed-in winters. Especially this year, the weather is bitterly cold, with temperatures south of -20F (-29 C). Further, the stadium does not have a closeable roof or pitch-heaters. Good luck.

Tourism: Activities in Surpronuk revolve around nature. Much of the northern peninsula is the ancestral range of the famous Cosumarite Azure Dragon and is designated as nature reserve. If you can brave the cold, the many hiking or horse-back riding trips are exquisite. The landscape consists of ancient rolling hills and small rocky mountains and cliffs, all thickly forested by pine and other evergreen trees. These deep, dark forests are thought to have mystical properties and are holy in some old folk religions of the region. People in the city of Surpronuk itself are active and health-conscious. The city has a unique feel due to its boxy architecture designed to withstand blizzards. And many many statues.

Venue: Memorial Stadium at Lockwood Road (35,000) - Smaller stadium, but with a lot of character - much like its city. Its intimate atmosphere will lend itself well to traveling contingents of fans.

Matches: Savalen vs. Greater Cascadia (MD1), Greater Cascadia vs. Stacoco (MD2), Stacoco vs. Savalen (MD3), Round of 16 (1F vs. 2E)

Group F

KLYDE CITY, NORTH KLYDE FIEF

One of Cosumar's oldest cities, founded over 900 years ago near where the first settlers landed. Situated on the western shore of Klyde's Isle, it is a short underwater rail ride across the gulf from Ramusok. In ancient times, its port served a critical function for sea travel between Cosumar's two landmasses because it is where the strait is the narrowest. Much of its local economy is still derived from the sea. Klyde is now a modern metropolitan hub of 4.5 million, but it still has strong roots to its local Irish and Welsh heritage. Outsiders often still think of leprechauns and clovers songs when Klyde is mentioned. Klydians, as they are known, have a peculiar propensity for tea of all varieties when they aren't chugging cider and ale. It is the Tea Capital of Cosumar. Seafood is also ubiquitous. Temperature forecast is the same as Ramusok's, but with even stronger winds blowing in across the gulf.

Tourism: The famous Klyde Marina stretches miles long and is five minutes from your hotels and the stadium. Walk along the water and enjoy innumerable attractions along the way, from aquariums to boutiques to barking harbor seals. It's a little cold for the beach right now, but there's stuff to do downtown as well. MacArthur Symphony Hall is world-famous, and there are Irish bars aplenty - often with live Celtic music and even Celtic Punk.

Venue: The Klyde Sportsplex (90,000) - When it was built 15 years ago, The Sportsplex was regarded as one of the most technologically advanced venues in the multiverse because of the sheer number of events and sports it was designed for. It is still one of the finest in AO, having recently hosted the SBCC, World Bowl and NSCF Championship Game. It is situated adjacent to the scenic Klyde Bay - giving fans a fantastic view of the ocean and skyline from their seats.

Matches: Paputu vs. Mattijana (MD1), Mattijana vs. Tobiasia (MD2), Chernordad vs. Mattijana (MD3), Quarterfinals (R5vR6)

CASSANDRA, CRESSCALUS FIEF

Cassandra is Cosumar's glitzville. This city revolves around showbiz and celebrity. Our versions of both Hollywood and Broadway are here, as is the only legal casino in the Fiefdom. Located in the barren northern steppe between the Pristine Forest and the mountainous northern peninsula, Cassandra has little to speak of in terms of landscape. But it grew into an important city due to its location on the bank of the Pristine River, which connected eastern Cosumar to the west in the early days of continental expansion. Cassandra's northernness and flat landscape (nothing to shield it from freezing winds) means it is taking the brunt of Cosumar's current apocalyptic winter. Expect temperatures around -15F (-26C).

Tourism: People flock to Cassandra City for the famous plays and musicals on Staropoli Street, the film studios, and the celebrity-sighting. Oh yeah, and did we mention the ten-story Cassandra Megacasino? Gambling is outlawed everywhere in Cosumar except on its premises. There are also extravagant attractions of even less reputable nature, such as the largest luxury brothel in Cosumar, and the most strip clubs per capita in the northeastern region. An "anything goes" pilgrimage to Cassandra is a rite of passage for young adults across the region.

Venue: The Amphitheatre (60,000) - A fitting name for the finest grounds in this theatrical city. Home to Cassandra City, one of the biggest clubs in Cosumar. Surprisingly, this will be The Amphitheatre's first time hosting a major tournament - and has been expanded by 6,000 seats for the occasion. It has also been outfitted with additional pitch-heaters in addition to its retractable roof to cope with the raging blizzards. It is also famous for its extremely bright headlights that illuminate the pitch more than most stadiums during night matches...visiting players often complain about the brightness. Don't get stage fright!

Matches: Tobiasia vs. Chernordad (MD1), Chernordad vs. Paputu (MD2), Paputu vs. Tobiasia (MD3), Round of 16 (1Ev2F)

Group G

KALDUKOSIC, KALDUKOSIC FIEF

Kaldukosic is the most populous city in Cosumar (16 million) and is one of the most important hubs in Atlantian Oceania, situated on the east coast of mainland Cosumarus, just south of Ramusok. The two cities' metro areas overlap to form one giant megalopolis. Whereas Ramusok is known more for its artistic, historical and governmental importance, Kaldukosic is a the mecca of Cosumarite big business, home to booming technology, finance and medical industries. It has an older, more profession-oriented population than Ramusok but also a higher average income. Not as much youthful energy in the nightlife and music/art scenes, but plenty of swanky luxurious clubs and hangouts. The effects of Cosumar's historic winter start to lessen a little when you get as far south as Kaldukosic. Temperatures hover slightly below freezing (30F/-1C). Still plenty cold for a soccer match though.

Tourism: Dragonbreath Tower is the tallest skyscraper in Cosumar. Take the glass elevator to the Skydeck and walk across an invisible catwalk to the next-door building, 2800 feet above the ground. Infinity Plaza is the Cosumarite equivalent of Times Square, with massive hologram advertisements and paper-thin billboard screens everywhere. Complete with throngs of people moving like molasses and the stock exchange a few blocks away. Visitors may also be interested to visit the headquarters of The Cosumarite Courier, our nation's most world-famous news publication.

Venue: Leviathan Arena (99,114) - One of the most iconic venues in Cosumar, Leviathan Arena is more known for soccer has long served as the home of the National Team in World Cups (and local club FC Kaldukosic). It has the steepest and highest stands of any stadium in Cosumar. Sitting up high is not for the weak of heart - visitors frequently faint from the steepness of their view. With fans towering above the pitch, Leviathan has subsequently become infamous for its colossal (even suffocating) atmosphere. Also of note is its Museum of Cosumarite Sport, one of the largest in-stadium museums in the world.

Matches: Holy Philippine Empire vs. North Carcossia and the Hesperides (MD1), North Carcossia and the Hesperides vs. Rocesia (MD2), Losthaven vs. North Carcossia and the Hesperides (MD3), Semifinals (QF3vQF4)

PELETHAS, MORPONTE FIEF

Pelethas is kind of the California of Cosumar. It has everything. Yep, the Mediterranean climate too. Mmmm. Nestled on the south-central coast between the Jagged Mountains and the ocean, there is an enormous mountain chain to the north and beautiful golden-sand beaches (the finest in Cosumar) to the south. Pelethas has a prevailing image as a quaint vacation town with more tourists than actual inhabitants. But with a population of 3.1 million, Pelethas' size is often underestimated even by Cosumarites. Thanks to the mountains, precipitation rates are very high, enabling Pelethas to also contribute to the economy via agriculture. Of course, the fruit, nut and vegetable farms aren't too glamorous, so they're a bit removed from the actual city for the tourists' sakes. Except the vineyards of course, because tourists like wine more than carrots. Mining towns of Scottish heritage dot the land of north of Pelethas amongst the first mountain slopes. While the forecasted temperatures of 45F (7 C) aren't exactly sunny, this is the warmest you'll find in Cosumar this week with the current winter storms. Teams placed here should be thankful they're not in Surpronuk.

Tourism: Whether your team likes to ski or jetski, or rock climb or suntan...there's something for them here. Well, sunbathing at the beach might not be the best idea right now given the current temperature. Pelethas Peak (8,912 meters) is the third-highest point in Cosumar and towers over the city. Getting to the view at the top would make for a great profile pic! In the city itself, there's tons and tons of shopping. And more shopping. Oh, and Cosumar's largest chocolate factory, tallest roller coaster, and most comprehensive anatomical museum.

Venue: The Xanadu Dome (74,000) - After finally finishing construction a couple years ago, the state-of-the-art Xanadu Dome is ready to host its first major soccer event. To date, it has only hosted the World Bowl Final and home games of gridiron powerhouse Pelethas Thunder. Will your team be the first of what will someday be many historic teams to achieve greatness in this brand-new stadium? With its artsy interior décor and magnificent glass exterior, The Xanadu Dome is hailed as a wonder of modern sport architecture.

Group H

HAGENHEIM, DUVERSIA FIEF

Hagenheim is an oasis of civilization (2.7 million) smack in the middle of Pristine Forest, Cosumar's largest expanse of uninterrupted nature. Located in Cosumar's far northwest, it is very very chilly at this time of year (-5F / -20C) and blanketed in snow, though not the arctic-cold of Surpronuk. Hagenheim is Cosumar's "greenest" city in every possible way. Appearance-wise, it's as if the city is growing out of the forest - there are trees and vines and shit all over the place like some kind of urban jungle. Like how you would imagine an abandoned city to look in 100 years. Many people live in treehouses, sometimes networked together to form tree-neighborhoods (a concept expanded upon in Kalloroda). 58% of the population is vegan and another 19% is vegetarian. Hagenheim is also Cosumar's hub for renewable energy innovation and has the lowest carbon emissions of any city with over 2 million people. Perhaps unsurprisingly by this point, it's also known as the "hipster" capital of Cosumar. Hipsters, hipsters everywhere.

Tourism: The whole freaking city is awesome to explore. It's so unorganized, like a maze, with cool hidden places all around that you can stumble into. South End is known for having the most expansive tree-neighborhood, and is open to visitors. Indie rock, folktronica, alternative hip hop, new wave and other 'hipster genres' have thriving scenes in Hagenheim, which also has the most record stores per square mile of any Cosumarite city. Coffee shops and hookah lounges are also ubiquitous. Hagenheim also has by far the most marijuana use per capita of any Cosumarite city. If you walk down the road for more than ten minutes, someone is bound to offer you some.

Venue: Jorn Hagen Memorial Stadium (36,000) - A field with a lot of history, as it is over 150 years old. Home to the CFL's Hagenheim Vagabonds, lacrosse team Hagenheim Elves and third-division soccer club Pristine Forest FC (its original tenant, which was a much bigger force in Cosumarite soccer in the old days when the stadium was built). Pitch-heaters have just been added specifically for this event to reduce discomfort for your teams and snow build-up during the matches.

Matches: Mercedini vs. Vyshehradska (MD1), Vyshehradska vs. Arkan (MD2), Platerdam vs. Vyshehradska (MD3), Round of 16 (1Gv2H)

MALLOX, GELLANO FIEF

Mallox is a traditionally blue-collar industrial city in central-east Cosumar, equidistant between the Eastweald Woods and the Helfin Desert. It is known as the hub of Cosumar's transportation industries, with many of the Fiefdom's cars, rails, planes and spaceships being manufactured here. The city is also famous for its passionate sports fans, with Mallox FC, the Mallox Mavericks and Mallox Tigers being among the best-supported in their respective sports. Mallox has a bloody history due to its location on the border between many of the historic dynasties. Malloxites also have a unique culinary tradition (lots of organ-eating) that is considered disgusting by most other Cosumarites. It has a relatively cool but dry climate usually, but is frozen in ice and sleet at the moment, with temperatures dipping to 5F or -15C.

Tourism: Malloxites aren't always the friendliest to outsiders (by Cosumar's standards of openness), so exploring the city may not be as jolly of a time as in other host locales. Still, be sure to try out some of the famous sports bars to watch BoF games you're not going to yourself. Try the ox-heart pie if you dare. The ICMI (Interstellar Conveyance and Minerals) factory may also be worth checking out if you're interested in spaceship construction. The famous Eastweald Woods are only a short Hyperloop ride eastward if you're a nature person.

Venue: Orange Palace (46,000) - Longtime home stadium of Mallox FC, one of Cosumar's most historically successful clubs. As you can see below, it is aptly named.

Savalen National Squad - Baptism of Fire 62

Team Facts

Nation: The Nomadic Peoples of Savalen

Region: International NorthWestern Union

Stadium: Dodford Park, Tronfjell, Hamar, (Seats 57,250)

Nicknames: The Savages, The Lynxes (national animal), Savs

SENIOR TEAM

Coach - Marvin Vetlesen.
Well know home-grown coach, who has only ever had jobs in Savalen. Following promotion with Alvadal United into the top division two years ago, he was drafted in to replace the foreign coach with quite a temper, Jonny “Hamfist” Barton in the U-15 and with just a month's preparation, led them to the quaterfinals. Snapped up by the senior team, he has had a year or so to work with the team.

Continuing with what he knows best, he has gone with youth, 26 being the oldest age in the team. Will their energy and fearlessness pay off? Or will it be a quick ticket home?

Style Modifier +2

Starting Tactic - 4-2-3-1. The coach does have an Italian Assistant, Fabio Dalmonte, who has influenced Vetlesen to the extent that he has very flexible tactics that may change during the match. Favourites are 4-1-3-2 and 3-2(WBs)-1(DM)-2-2 (Offensive with wing-backs). Followed his friend from the U-15s to the senior team.

STARTING XI

GK - #1 Leiv Selberg 21 y/o
Definitely the best goalkeeper in the league, but with so little back-up, can he sustain the good form that finished in him winning the title?

LB (CB) - #8 Otta Gudmundson - 26 y/o
Not a very large left-back, but otherwise has a good defensive record.

CB - #5 Conrad Alvdal - 25 y/o
Solid, tall and fast centre back, but he has a tendancy to lash out to provacation. It is surprising that he is in the starting eleven, but with Ibsen out, it must have been a flip of the coin.

CB - #9 Ron Jorgensen - 21 y/o
Another centre back with a similar build, but is a little slower and less experienced. However, his positioning and tackling makes him a guaranteed starter.

RB (WB) - #3 Norvik Falla - 24 y/o
Absolute beast with quite a bit of pace, but the end product can be lacking, however these offensive attributes mean that space can be left in behind.

DM - #7 Rauno Liikanen - 25 y/o
Nabbed from the neighbouring country thanks to his parents being from Savalen, he has an eye for a pass and great positioning.

DM - #2 Tobsakha - 20 y/o
Absolute beast of a man, but yet still has some pace. However, just like Alvdal, does have severe disciplinary problems, but only when seriously wound up.

CAM - #36 Temuge - 22 y/o
The star of this team. He can pretty much do anything in offence and isn't the worst in defence. Captain for a reason.

R(A)M - #4 Kurt Axelsen - 16 y/o
Some of the world’s best teams are interested, but his level-headedness means that he has come out stating that he will definitely play in Savalen for now to continue his development. His talent is unquestionable, but the fact that he is the youngest member of the team means he has less experience and ability. One for the future, but don’t be fooled, he deserves the call up.

L(A)M - #17 Þór Eldgrímursson - 19 y/o
Has an excellent cross and seems to find even the smallest player. He doesn't have the greatest of right foots, however.

ST - #2 Max(im) Lisov- 21 y/o
Remember the name. Absolute star striker, whose right foot is a thing of wonder. He may seem a little small, but the years spent in the junior high-jump teams mean that even in the air, Lisov musn't be underestimated.

SUBS

GK - #11 Alfred Elstad - 24 y/o
One of the two Elstad brothers, his height means that set-pieces aren’t a problem, but any low shots may prove difficult to deal with.

CB - #75 Derik Ibsen - 24 y/o
NSadly out for the first game and maybe the second, but, unless the man who replaced him aces his matches, is likely to resume his position in the centre of defence. Vice-Captain.

LWB - #16 Matt Tatar - 23 y/o
Not a bad prospect, but his defensive game can be lacking. Vetlesen likes putting him on when switching to 3-2-1-2-2.

RB - #12 Avdo Vuèko - 25 y/o
Prone to injuries, one of which halted his development. However, he has made a steady comeback into the team over the past half-year. On his day can be an absolute rock, stopping anything that comes his way, but is unlikely to start whilst the team plays offensively.

DM - #14 Chanar Aarnes - 25 y/o
Nice, hard-working, defensive midfielder, but the two in the team are just too good, but is excellent cover. It's one of the few places where Savalen really doesn't have a problem.

MC - #18 Max(im) Sviták - 18 y/o
Skilful and powerful, just like his brother, who plays for the U 15's. His ability with free-kicks and the ability to make something out of nothing may prove vital in the latter stages.

ST - #15 Gunnar Moy - 25 y/o
Has an absolutely amazing bullet header thanks to his height, but it is impossible to displace the current frontman, but he is a little better on the counter. Impact sub? Absolutely.

R/LM - #13 Samson Elstad - 22 y/o
Brother of Alfred, can play on both flanks as he is good with both feet. Critics say he doesn’t show his attacking ingenuity enough, but it certainly is there and hopefully he can turn up at the right moment if called upon.

ST - #6 Malik Gur- 18 y/o
His call up is surprising, but Vetlesen went to a lot of Alvadal training sessions to decide who he was going to take between him and Marik Svensson (of Trondheim Vikings FC). Nice low shot and a cool head for penalties may prove decisive, especially in the latter stages of the match.

Football is the national sport of Hasznia, but restrictions on professionalism as well as enforced isolation under the Kingley Republic have stunted its growth at the national level. With the recent liberalization of employment laws, Hasznia has seen a dramatic rise in the level of play in its domestic White and Blue leagues, as well as an increased interest in football at the youth academy level. Despite this increased investment, however, Hasznia remains a backwater in global football, with its only participation an abortive attempt in the 37th Di Bradini Cup last year.

The senior national side is dubbed the "White Suns" after the sigil of House Diedrich, which held the Archduke's Throne in the days before the Kingsley Republic, a symbol which also graces the revised national flag. Their kits are conservative, bearing only variations of the national colors of blue, white, and black. The side that has been selected for the Baptism reflects the overall youth of Hasznian professional footballers across the board; with limited earning potential, many players retire at or before age 30 to pursue other opportunities.

Head Coach: Byron Payne, 53
A noted poacher for Barracha and Gray Summit in his playing days, Payne is a disciple of the Hasznian style of coaching, which values individual effort and position play over team chemistry or creativity. His tenure at Isper in 2013-2014, meant to save the club from relegation, ended with the exact opposite, although Payne himself was vindicated in the press while the club's board was vilified for failing to provide him the latitude to fill slots on his roster. The pressing question as the Suns prepare for World Cup qualifying, is whether Payne can get it done now that he has his pick of the players in Hasznia's top flight.

Payne's coaching style will be familiar to most of his players; fullbacks stay at home, midfielders create chances, and striker score goals. A relatively experienced midfield should be able to anchor most plays, while the pairing of fan favorites Ed Miller and Alex Hawkins has been the buzz of the Hasznian blogosphere since the rosters were announced. Most outlets agree that there are some significant omissions from Payne's roster, but none of them can agree on what those omissions are.

Quick messages behind the Scenes
As usual in this section of Javan News Agency, we hear what the inside men, which in this case happens to be the Team Staff and Players have to say. So lets not hesistate.
 • "Our lads are going to smash this tournament, and come back with the glory of the trophy!" - Manager of National Team
 • "I aint lettin' no goals in! I am gonna save ma team, coz I can. I feel 'part of them, though I do admit I stand out in ma gold kit.." - Hermann Reading

Football, football, football. The national sport of Mercedini will be sure to expand its reaches throughout the whole of this prosperous nation and hopefully to the rest of the region. The 'MFL' (Mercedinian Football League) is the most advanced in the region, with the four-tiered system bringing in over Y40 Billion to the economy last year.
The Republic of Mercedini will be trying it's hand at the 62nd Baptism of Fire over the coming weeks, with director of the Mercedinian National Football Federation (MNFF) Peter Lambrini keen on making an impression on the world stage, "Mercedini loves it's football, so we are hoping for a good run in this tournament to capture the eyes not just on the viewers at home, but of the world! Who knows, we might even win the World Cup!"
Tickets sold out quickly, as the sport crazy nation were keen to see their lads on the world stage, and to enjoy the majestic nations of Cosumar & Quebec. The official shirt of Mercedini will be the signature Blue and Black striped home kits, with white and red away kits.
Mercedini will compete in Group H alongside fellow first-timers Platerdam, Vyshehradska and Arkan

Fixtures:

On the flight to Cosumar

Vetlesen looked again at the the letter that he had recieved from Cosumar. They were drawn with Stacoco, Greater Cascadia and The Island Formerly Known as Tasmania. He looked at the name of the nation again. "Why would anyone ever name their country that? I'll just call them Tasmania in private." He turned the page - it wasn't like the groups gave anything away. None of the team had participated in a football tournament of this size and importance before and he had only seen a few of the teams at youth level before.

He flipped through a load of pages with different information such as travel and culture. He knew a little about Cosumar after being in their group for the U-15 tournament and was impressed by the chips that allowed them to speak any language, but it would be cool to actually visit their country. At last he reached the schedule and to his delight they got to play Surpronuk, in the far north of Cosumar. He knew it was the coldest weather in memory for the region and this played straight into his hands - Savalen was also a cold place and the league played through winter, but the extreme cold could prove a problem for those from the south of the country. There was the bonus that they would play in the national stadium before the final if they got there, but the trip for matchday 2 could be problematic - he wanted less travelling time and more training time, especially in this weather.

Late,Late Sports Show

"Gooooooooooood evening, good evening, good evening, good evening, good evening, good evening, evening good and welcome to the latest episode of the Late, Late Sports Show. I'm your host, Jeff Morgensson, and I'm here with my co-host during the Baptism of Fire and World Cup, Savalen's favourite footballer, David!"

"Good evening everyone, I'm really looking forward to today's episode - we have previews of both the Baptism of Fire, or as hosts Quebec and Cosumar have labelled it, Baptism of Ice, due to the cold weather and the 7ball cup in Drawkland and why we didn't end up being hosts."

"You're doing well, David. I hope you are up to the task for the rest of the program. First though, lets go to Eriksson, who will be one of your commentators during the matches."

"Thanks, Jeff. As you can probably see, the storm is very much a nuisance, but what you won't believe is that our player will be playing through this tomorrow. I am currently standing just outside Memorial Stadium, where two of Savalen's group matches will be. It has only the very basics, so it will be much like the northern stadiums in Savalen in January. Maybe the coach will be inclined to play those players who have competed in such conditions before. Well, before I freeze to death, I'd better get inside. Back to the studio."

"It sure is bad. We would usually do a quick Q&A, but with that weather, it's unsurprising that it won't happen. Hopefully he'll be able to answer a few of the viewer's questions before the start of the first match, against Greater Cascadia. That leads us on nicely: David, what do you think of the group draw?"

"Well not much really - none of the other teams have announced their teams. But our team seems strong and they all seem to fit together on paper. Whether this happens on the pitch is a different matter, but with Marv as our coach, I think we will do well. I would say that a run to the quater-finals would be good and we have a great chance of getting to the final, as long as injuries don't strike us too hard."

"Well, thanks Davaid. I will just add that it will be interesting to see how the weather affects the football. Good luck to our boys.
Now onto 7ball..."

The group stage matches for the Baptism of Fire have been revealed. The Indo-Malaysian team is in Group D, and will be playing in Quebec, which has recently been ravaged by extreme weather, with it being described by the Quebecois as the worst in a hundred years.

Our team have been unsure about where Indo-Malaysia' match will take place, but an anonymous person called in to say it is Bannockburn Stadium, though this is unconfirmed.

The Journey
After exchanging Java's for Quebecois Dollars, they began their flight towards the Quebecois Capital, due to being unsure of where to fly to. Flash Richardson, a forward for the team, seemed disgusted at the cuisine, and insisted on bringing his own food.
Though we are unsure about them having a hotel, a Quebecois Hotel Company has allegedly reserved places for the team in branches in major cities, allowing space for the team.

Arkan News Network
Your Weekday Arkan News!

"So, the Baptism of Fire, the precursor to the World Cup, has started, with the team being announced. What are your thoughts on the team? Strengths? Weaknesses?" Asks Domi Oloke, host of ANN and the host of Arkan Food Network. Domi, although questioned for her ethics in getting news, see the Oket Scandal, has been praised for her abilities in front of a camera.

"Well, surprisingly, Artem Ovoloc, a Arkan-Remorovian citizen joins the roster for the tourney. As we saw during the APSL this season, he's a scoring machine, winning the Golden Boot. As I say that, he's slotted on the bench, behind Renzet Hententat, another APSL Golden Boot winner. Right behind the position is Nikko Pulvolv, former captain of the team. Pulvolv has talent in his vision and passing, so he could be a set-up man. So, a strength in my eyes would be their attacking,"says Yelltin Abramov, keeper for the New Leo Lions and reigning Golden Glove winner in the APSL.

"Speaking of awards on the team, Gogolv Eterio has a Golden Glove to his name, and the back-line itself has two GloryCup's to its name, thanks to Jako Rumeto and Ylevin Tresmondo,"says Caltrip Aridriv, former Arkan National Chess Champion, up until he tragically lost his arm in a chess related accident. He's never played chess again.

"Eterio is a great keeper, I would know, I had to come in after the injury he had first game of the APSL season, so I'd hope he does well. Rumeto and Tresmondo are both great defenders in their own ways, so I'd expect them to show," Abramov said, crossing his legs under the table.

"You do bring up that injury that left Eterio out of the first team for the entire season, sans the last two games. Will that injury be an ailment in the upcoming tournament, and how so?" Domi asks, crossing her arms across the table.

"Well, as well as his arm has healed near perfection at this point, no, though he still has trouble fully extending the arm," Abramov says.

"Well, that's good!"Domi exclaims, crossing her legs."Now, Arkan is in Group H, which is being hosted in Cosumar, in the towns of Hagenheim and Mallox. Are you hoping to see the team go far in group H?"

"As an Arkanian soccer player, yes, I am hoping they do. Cosumar has some wonderful locations, and the two towns are no different,"Abramov says.

"Well, thank you Yelltin for joining us today! This has been Arkan News Network, and we'll see you tomorrow, as we broadcast the Arkan City Capitals against the Cryslis Crystals in a preseason match for the Arkan Hockey League! This has been Caltrip Aridriv, and thank you for watching!"

A chorus of trumpets played loudly and triumphantly as a soccer ball zoomed around a virtual soccer field. An unidentified player; only a silhouette, kicks the ball, and sends it flying towards the screen revealing a dazzling set of letters: “SOCCER TODAY, SOCCER TONIGHT”.

A man, dressed in a bright blue suit, and with dyed green hair, steps down a flight of stairs smiling handsomely. His suit, littered with glitter and sparkles, is a sight to behold.

“Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! This is the 62nd Baptism of Fire, and our first official entry into the world stage Soccer Circuit!”

A chorus of cheers erupted from an unseen audience. The host laughed in delight and continued his speech.

“For all of your tuning in from your homes, we have an excellent show here for you today! As of a few minutes ago, our national soccer team is arriving into Klyde City, Consumar to compete in the first rounds of a division that we hope, no… DREAM to excel in. Of course, since our team is in the F Group, our first opponents will be the Confederate Islands of Paputu, Mattijana, and of course our lovely friends from down in Tobiasia, all very talented and skilled teams!"

The camera cut to an image of the national soccer team stepping off the jet into snowy Consumar. The players, all dressed in black suits and ties seemed unfazed by the large crowd awaiting them outside the plane.

The host let out an exaggerated gasp.

“There they are! Peter Propst; star Midfield and captain of FC Al’Tov, winners of the Chernan Cup!”

Propst, seeing the camera, gave a short, nervous wave.

The host let out another flamboyantly excited gasp.

"And behind him? Tage Gustavsson! Captain of the National Squad and one of the best forwards in Chernorad, if not the Baptism of Fire!”

He laughed excitedly and continued his tirade.

“Out next we have our new rookie team member, Blasius Zotov, straight out of high school! He is bound to impress many spectators this season!”

The camera cut back to the host, still smiling.

“Well, we wish the best of luck to our team down in the Baptism of Fire. We will of course be covering EVERY. SINGLE. SECOND. Of this entire event, so make sure you stay tuned for much more of the good stuff! We might even see some of those famous Azure Dragons, that are rumored to be making an appearance this year!"

The trumpet song began to play again and the screen began to slowly fade to black as the host waved the audience goodbye.

Warren Black , Minister of Sports, looks over the international wire to see the latest news for the upcoming World Cup competition. When he noticed that the Baptism of Fire was aproching. He realized he had to choose this year's national team. There were a few easy choices such as coach Rodger Richardson and Tyler Stevens, best Striker in the whole country, he'll be the captian. Well it's time to pull the files on the players who are healthy and currently not on deployment with the military. Well this will be tough. There's not many players but we'll be competitive in the group stage against New Gazi, Lightshield, and Indo-Malaysia. What a better way to announce Cre Drago is open to forigeners will a international competition.

Editor's Opinion: Surprising Selections, Comfort Picks, and Young Bloods
By Jason Otero, Footy Editor, Port Vale Sentinel
THE ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUÉBEC

My, what a 23-player roster was released today from the brand new Sporting Association of Herendon! I'm sure when it was first stated that young (and I mean young) Miss Winter would be the national team manager, all expectations were scrapped, and thrown out the window. However, contrary to popular belief, her few (read: two) seasons have been bolstered by a wisened staff. Frank Haas brings four premierships and two Queen's Shields (awarded for most points at the end of the regular season) to the table, and in his fourteen years as manager at Portage FC, he's never finished below sixth in the standings. Doctor McConnell will keep the team in tip-top shape, and make sure that practice sessions don't run too hard on the team. Captain Cadian Cassady (yes, he of unearned disrepute) and his Vice, Adrian Layne, will keep the team focused during play.

Speaking of Cadian Cassady, it's quite interesting to see him being listed as a player, and the new head of U18 development. One would assume that this is his retirement tour, with a booking of that sort. Despite your opinions of what his father did, he is a brilliant footballer, and a fortress in mid-field. Alongside Miss Winter, he will lead this team into the future, even if he is not on the field. His first protégé has even made her way to the big field! Kaira Grey will be a starter, earning her first cap at the age of 17! Kaira hails from the western regions of the country, playing up in the mountains, where she has opted to skip primary academy, after graduating from sixth form. She's already used to the 4-5-1 (a common formation in the mountains), and is already a leader on the National Development Team. One must look forward to seeing her shine and grow as a player.

As we continue down the roster, it is a big surprise to see Arrienne Andrewson on the team sheet! Some may say her cards were unfairly dealt to her when Monship was relegated to third tier Southern League, but she's had two years to work her way back up into the Championship, and even into the Premiers. That said, of the five midfielders, who do you take off to play her, and is she really worse than Tito? I feel there also is a better keeper to have on the reserves, but a young blood like Marquez should be able to handle it.

From here on, we'll have to see how Miss Winter takes care of things, and hope for the best! Kickoff for the first matchday occurs at 8th cycle on Anke, so make sure your TV sets are tuned!

Cadian put down the paper onto the obsidian coffee table. He'd just finished packing his bag for the practice pitch, and was relaxing a bit, when Silenna stirred on the low mattress on the other side of the room. "Up so early?" she muttered, eyes still wrenched shut with sleep.

"Yeah, you know I like to be early." he said. Silenna mumbled something that was unintelligible to Cadian, rolled back over, and was immediately asleep. Cadian leaned on the half wall separating the small studio apartment, appreciating the sleeping form of his girlfriend. He shook his head, grabbed his bag, and headed for the front door of the rented room. The Sporting Association had sprung on a short term lease of a fancy hotel while the team was in Québec. The heavy oak door swung open silently, as Cadian stepped out into the hallway. The sun had not even started to rise yet, as he walked down the stairway, and out into the freezing morning.

As had been the tradition for the week they had been there, a black car idled outside. A back door opened, and he stepped in to the warm interior. "Off to the field again, sir?" the driver quipped, already knowing the answer.

"Listen, just because the Queen sent you here with us, doesn't mean you get to call me sir..." Cadian said playfully. With his experience in the Queen's Guard, Cadian was very familiar with Jacques, the personal driver of the Queen. And likewise, Jacques was very familiar with Cadian, and how to push his buttons.

"Absolutely, sir. To the practice facility, we go." he responded, as the car drove off into the dawn.

The Brigantii Baptism of Fire 62 Squad

Staff
Coach - Ron Winston. 64 year old Winston failed to lead Brigantii to the FWFA Championship in Cusco but has kept his job as the team look to embark upon the Baptism of Fire. Winston likes to stick to a traditional 4-4-2 with a big man up front. With years of experience both at home in Brigantii and managing overseas he is a passionate ambassador of the game and has a wealth of knowledge. His biggest issues will be between picking which keeper he starts with, with two fine goalies to choose from and not having a proper left footed winger to choose from.

Assistant – Donnie Barrett.

Image
First XI
GKP - Ray Hurst, Rookscroft City. The Rookscroft keeper kept 9 clean sheets in the league as the blues cemented their place in mid-table and has been Ron Winston's number 1 pick for the FWFA Cup qualifying campaign and managed to keep 2 clean sheets in 8 appearances.

RB – Harry Melville, Rookscroft United. The wing back was an ever present in the Rookscroft league winning team and played in several of Brigantii's matches in the FWFA qualifying campaign.

CB - Zac Eisenhower, Madonnachurch. The solid centre back was one of the first names on the team sheet after his strong performances for Madonnachurch, who had the second best defensive record in the league.

CB - Wardell Raines, Bishopbury. Blighted by intrusions into his personal life and his team's capitulation this season

LB - Byron Samuels, Moorledge Town. The left back has fast become one of the top prospects in the country and has linked up with the national team after a great showing in the Di Bradini Cup, where he scored twice.

RM – Mitchell Clay, Ridgemont Town. The right winger has been Winston's first choice since he took over the team. He may not be flashy or particularly pacey but he did finish with the most assists in the league and is a good, honest midfielder.

CM - Frankie Wallace, Bishopbury. The question has hung over the team for a while, Wallace of Stevenson. Winston however persists in Wallace and Stevenson. The 29 year old was the top scoring midfielder in the league this year and will be looking to find the net for the national team too.

CM - Jarred Stevenson, Albertpool. Captain. Stevenson has been an ever present in the Albertpool team since debuting ten years ago and links up with team mates Mcnamara and Irwin. He has a thunderous strike and is capable of hitting the net from a distance.

LM - Stephan Mcnamara, Albertpool. Despite not being left footed Mcnamara is deployed on the left for both club and country. Fast, agile and deadly when he cuts inside on his right foot, Mcnamara has been attracting interest from overseas in Cusco and Tiburtina.

CF - Michael Irwin, Albertpool. The diminutive attacker burst on to the scene a few years ago in Brigantii and is an out and out striker with goals galore in him, he's finished as the top scorer in the country over the last few seasons and at only 25 has years left.

CF - Robbie Lambeth, Landfell. The Landfell striker helped fire his team to a league cup final and scored a handful for his country in the FWFA qualifiers. Tall and powerful, he'll be a handful for defenders to mark and is the target man in he two man attack.

Subs
GK - Paul Robertson, Torkingham Wanderers. Played his part in a superb season for newly promoted Torkingham, keeping ten clean sheets in 38 games.

CB – Dereck Chamberlain. Rookscroft City. Dereck has been a bit of a bit part player this season due to injury but is still one of the best in the country and will bring with him some experience.

RB – Dennis Shaw, Throstle Rovers. One of the more senior members of the squad, Shaw moved to Throstle at the beginning of the season but with their relegation will be looking for another move before he returns from Quebec.

CM - Aaron Ramsbottom, Marketnewton. The midfielder is an up and comer in Brigantii, with a deft touch and sublime vision, he's also something of a playboy and a little reckless.

CM - Russ Baker, Brierthorne. Another young player. Baker was omitted from the DBC team in order to get him fit for the Baptism of Fire. Short, stocky and with a decent engine, the midfielder is a solid addition to the team.

CF - Trevor Winter, Marketnewton. One of the top strikers in the country, Winter has been deposed as Marketnewton's top stiker by Sylvain Nicot, but still has plenty of goals in him.

This is TTV News at Five, our top story tonight.

The Tobiasian Sports Council have selected their team for the upcoming Baptism of Fire football competition. The new manager is Liz Sheffield, former manager of 3 times league winner team Tobiasia City FC, who stormed to victory last night. Liz is in the studio with us now.

TTV-So how do you feel about being selected as the first female manager of Tobiasia International Football Team?
Liz-Well it's an honour really, I look forward to flying out tomorrow with the team, and I'm glad the Sports Council have selected me really.
TTV-Well obviously the team will be playing soon, Liz do you expect a victory? And who do you think will shine?
Liz-Well I think all the team are really coming on as players. I think the opposition should particularly look out for Fraser Philips, Lee Ryans and Flint Eastgate. Those three can carve into the opposition and together, they really are unstoppable. So yes, I am expecting a victory.

Thank you very much, that was Liz Sheffield, Tobiasia Manager.

In other news, the world famous tX-n nuclear plant, containing 12 nuclear reactors, is approaching completion. Tobiasia Energy says that 9 reactors are already activated.

And tensions run high as the Liberal Alliance of Socialist States raises the international threat level to 9, as war is declared on the old enemy, the Alliance of Conservative Nations. The LASS defence council says that the ACN has been making unreachable demands since the last hostilities.
