Secret police in your nation

Postby Arvenia » Wed May 04, 2016 7:44 am

Every country had a secret police and now everyone just have security police, although some still have secret police organizations because they are dictatorships or messed-up democracies. Arvenia had four secret police organizations:
1. Redshirts - Unofficial name given to the secret police organization of the old Arvenian Commonwealth. It was known to protect the National Council and destroying every form of criticism towards the government at the time. It's biggest enemies were monarchists, communists and later Nazis.
2. National State Bureau (NSB) - Secret police of the National Socialist Republic of Arvenia under the National Socialist Party until the early days of WW2. They were doing political terrorism and religious persecution.
3. Department for the Prevention of People's War (DPPW) - Secret police of the APDM-controlled Arvenia during the Fourth Arvenian Civil War. It was formed to stop and monitor communist activities.
4. People's Protection Police (PPP/P3) - Secret police of the PRP-controlled Arvenia during the Fourth Arvenian Civil War. It was formed to protect communist sympathizers and monitor anti-communist activities.
What secret police did you have in the past or today?

There is an entire portion of the law enforcement known as Information and Reconnaissance Special Forces. They are a plainclothes police force which simply keeps their eyes out for suspicious behavior, spies or infiltrates criminal organization, or goes into areas of suspected criminal activity, and functions as the secret eyes and ears of the law enforcement. They often simply call in police on unsuspecting criminals. The general perception is that, if you're in a public area, the changes are there is a IRSF member in the area as well, and that any illegal actions which might avoid being seen by the CCTV surveillance will likely be seen by the IRSF, which will then keep tabs on you until the uniformed police arrive.

We have several:
-Department of Interior Security and Protection (DISP): our equivalent to FBI, DISP holds the responsibility of neutralizing criminal organizations inside Eclius by the means of reconnaissance, surveillance, infiltration, and neutralization

-Legio I Minervia: a robotic legion that is dedicated to counter-espionage operations. I Minervia is composed of Eclisian counter-espionage specialists, and their sole responsibility is to find, and neutralize enemy covert agents within Eclisian territory

-Department of Cyber Security (DCS): our equivalent to NSA, Department of Cyber Security is composed of elite Eclisian programmers and their responsibility is to find, trace and neutralize hackers and prevent crimes before it happens (since Info-tech, computers, and A.I. play vital roles in Eclisian society, hacking is considered to be an extreme threat to Eclisian social stability).

-Department of Boarder Security and Protection (DBSP): Their responsibility is track down and neutralize illegal immigrants and asylum seekers who aims to get into Eclisian territory without authorization. And also to find illegal immigrants and asylum seekers within Eclius and deport them
We do NOT use NS stats since it's not the most accurate reflection

The government of TurtleShroom does not operate a secret police, although it does have a spy service that is rumored to have gotten its hands dirty by taking out and messing with foreigners. The spy service is called the TurtleShroom Spy and Stalker Service (TSSSS).

However, there are non-governmental groups, basically terror cells, that exist independent of the state the operate like a secret police, and accomplish the same tasks, though for their private interests, not the government.

Among these groups are The FIshermen, which are a group terrorizing the City of Litlin. They are famous for using weaponized grappling hooks and other hook-like implements to kill citizens and hange their corpses from the rafters of a public building. Some suspect they are tied to another nation in the Region, Comrade Commisar, because they started killing a few months after an Aashinian force lended its security services in Litlin. The Fishermen are very brazen about their "disappearences", and have even intentionally made their existence public knowledge.

A second group is known only as the Sentinels. Their purpose, and what they actually do and enforce, is unknown, but they are credited with several suspicious "disappearences" and un-approved censorship of material they personally find objectionable.
{OOC: The Sentinels actually quash evidence and knowledge of Elemental Bending (in the Avatar cartoon's style) and any depiction of it. If TurtleShroomers found out that it was actually feasible to perform Bending like that, it would greatly damage several powerful interests in the country, particularly the oil industry. The Sentinels are said to have been created by oligarchs and oil barons in the country, but TurtleShroom IC-wise does not know of any of this.}

A third group is known only as the Star Chamber. The Star Chamber is believed to be a "shadow government", in that the actual TS government does not know about it or authorize it. It is suspected to be connected to the TSSSS, which coalesced itself without Congressional authorization or approval of the head of state around 2009-2010 AD, but no one can prove it. They allegedly take out foreign drug kingpins and other peddlers of goods seen to be un-TurtleShroomian, and make lengthy attempts to project TS power abroad.

The Republic of China does not operate a secret "police" force but a secret security system in which threats to public safety are removed without reference to any implicated individuals.

There is no need for secret police here as only one person is needed to keep the peace (hopefully this is self-explanatory).

The Happy Patrol maintains high visibility in all parts of the nation. But to this day, nobody knows what they do with detained prisoners, except from the wildly exaggerated tales of unlawful defectors.

There is no secret police force in Gamindustri.

The closest one is the Gendarmerie, and they are pretty transparent.

If the autonomous planets of our empire have secret police, that's their deal. The only secret police we have is Fleet Commander Marvis' special guard. They are not that kind to dis-obedient soldiers...

Minoa does not have a secret police and mass surveillance is illegal. There is however an intelligence agency (AIM) for monitoring the human rights situation and political happenings abroad, as well as organised crime at home and abroad, but this is a civilian agency.

Naturaiko when it was first founded was caught in a severe political landmine; as such, the First Prince issued an order of an elite group of spies to observe and report on those who he deemed to be threats to his sovereignty. This order came to be known as the Eyes, for their superb abilities to gather information.
In time, Naturaiko eventually became a safe and stable nation, and the Eyes were disbanded, though rumors abound in certain circles that they still act on behalf of the current Prince, Qazzam Namur.

Armed vigilanties serve as such kind of police in our country, but they only hunt down terrorists and felons. Also we have some intel with limited power, because we belive in privacy most of the time.
Skyhooked is MT/PMT with a few FT elements. Military is factbook only. NS stats are mostly non canon.

Historically, Bembernans were fearful of the 'Taxmen', a euphemistically-named group that was controlled by the then-incumbent Borcon dynasty. Though ostensibly existing merely for the purposes of enforcing taxation policy, they routinely operated as a paramilitary force that answered only to the Premier. They had nearly unlimited powers to suppress dissent, break up protests, and control the populace. Taxmen had the power to arbitrarily arrest any citizen they wished, and these people were often never heard from again, and others were simply beaten to within an inch of their lives by maverick Taxmen for spurious reasons. Marya Harloni, the incumbent High Commissioner of Bemberna, was famously abused by Taxmen in her youth, which ultimately spurred her to become a revolutionary.

Since the end of the Bembernan Civil War and the formation of the United People's Republic, the Central Executive Committee has abolished the Taxmen, breaking up their organisation and imprisoning many of its members. The CEC has put into place legal protections that prevent 'Bembernan citizens' from being subjected to cruel and unusual punishments or executions by the state. These protections are something of a propaganda tool however, as the Central Intelligence Committee has the power to arbitrarily strip citizenship from anybody who it decides to be a 'Seditious Individual or Terrorist' (known as SITs), at which point they are no longer covered by those protections. And while not as feared as the Taxmen were, perhaps due to their considerably more cloak-and-dagger approach, the CIC is nevertheless a ruthlessly efficient force with considerable powers, and has caused the 'disappearances' of countless citizens since the CEC came to power.

Our nation does have an intelligence agency we do not authorize a "secret police". It's 50% ethical 50% practical. Secret administrations cost a hundred times more money to control than a transparent agency and they almost never pay for themselves in the long run due to inaccuracy.
