Is an African-American really African? Are Irish-Americans really a distinct group of people that can claim some sort of heritage? some Europeans tend to laugh it off and say we're just Americans. I think that is rather odd.
What is your opinion on the matter? Do you identify as an American sub group?

Actually, different racial groups have completely different cultures in America, depending on where you are.
Hispanic-Americans and African-Americans have an entirely different culture than White or Asian Americans. I think it would be simplistic to say we all just become one big culture after we immigrate here with no influence from the mother country.Novus Maryland wrote:I'm an American with European ancestry. American is a nationality not an ethnicity or a race. You can move to China and get citizenship but you'll never be Chinese in the ethnic sense, and your base culture/language will always be different.Ashmoria wrote:you are American.
So if I went to China and had several generations of kids, would they all be just Chinese?

That's overly simplistic. Nationality is an entirely different subject. You can never be racially American unless you're a native American. To ignore the racial and ethnic identities of our country would not only be an insult to those races and ethnicities that have(and still) suffer from racial discrimination(Asians, Blacks, Irish, etc) and would ignore the fact that cultural, racial and ethnic factors have been historically more important than national ones.
No, they would not be Chinese. Ethnic Chinese people would always see them differently than 'real' Chinese people. their cultural heritage would be different.

As for my historical places of origin, it's a nearly equal mix of Italian, Irish, Lithuainian, and Armenian.

P.S. I think the native Americans would like to have a word with you on that. You know, since my European ancestors came here and stole their land and genocided them.
