"Change is coming" - [Filipino political transition thread]

Postby Cosmic Humanitarian Federation » Thu Apr 28, 2016 9:14 am

Link to the Philippine General discussion thread.

Never before has the elections been more decisive. With economic growth now on relatively prosperous terms under the current administration in comparison to the rest of the region, if not, the world, the Philippines still faces some tough challenges, economic growth is only for the few, the West Philippine sea dispute, which has the potential to escalate into something uglier in a galactic scale and more with the involvement of the US and the coming of the arbitration ruling at Hague, corruption, the civil conflicts and others.

The future is now in the hands of one of these people: A man preferring to continue the so-called "Daang Matuwid", another man facing corruption charges and claims to be pro poor, another man claiming to wipe out crime within 3-6 months and create a federalist government, an American actor's daughter and a feisty lawyer with a seemingly frail physical condition.

Rodrigo Duterte, long time mayor of Davao has finally seen victory during the latest presidential elections (if one is to cite the tentative results from the COMELEC transparency servers). His service for 22 years as Mayor of Davao city, one of the largest cities in terms of population and land area in the country has been renowned for turning the once murder capital of the Philippines into one of the top 10 safest cities in the world, at least according to some surveys, numerous ordinances such as those anti discrimination city ordinances (preventing discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, so on and so forth), the best social and emergency services in the country (including free city healthcare) and also making the city as one of the few places in rebel infested Mindanao were the rebels refuse to attack due to his refusal to treat them as enemies. However, much of this did not come without a price, as the mayor and president elect is criticized for turning the city into a police state, running anti crime vigilante squads (criticized by CHR for being extra judicial in nature) and finally, the ultimate source of international criticism being his foul politically incorrect language. Despite these imperfections, the Filipino people embrace him as the ultimate source for radical change in the nation with growth of wealth concentrated only on the few families, rampant corruption, crime, security and others through his platform of state industrialization, suppression of crime and corruption within 3-6 months, a warmer relationship with China and finally his promises for a federal parliamentary form of government which is designed to eliminate politics of personality and the political injustice of the "Imperial Manila" phenomenon.

However, the race for the VP is another story with Leni and Marcos having almost the same number of votes and separated only by a narrow margin of a few thousands. With vote canvassing incomplete, the conclusion of this political transition is still uncertain.

My personal (negative) opinion. Not voting or campaigning any candidate unless I am told to...

Duterte: I'm kinda scared of him because he said he's gonna turn us into a revolutionary government .
Poe: She's okay. But her OJT presidency should it happen, may effect us.

Roxas: Epal, Liberal Party milk-drinker.

Binay: Nognog, Pandak, laki sa pera (dem corruption)

Santiago: She's so smart, she's crazy!

Duterte winning would be a dream come true. It doesn't look like he takes guff from anybody. He can't completely fill the shoes of Ferdinand Marcos but I believe he can come close.

Look at PDP-Laban's party positions and what Duterte's ideals are for the Philippines.

But yes he lacks a filter.

I suppose.

PDP-Laban's positions are similar to that of Indonesia's Pancasila, which for all intents and purposes, is neither left wing nor right wing.
