Your Nation in the 1980's.

What was your nation like in the 80's? What were some important events going on, what was popular in your nation, what trends was going on, and did it have an effect in modern culture today (Forementioned question could vary in 'modern culture' based on what your year is on NS)?

Our nation was (and still is) under a dictatorship ruled by Anita Matsumoto (our nation's founding mother, though she wasn't the first leader).

The 80s were a time of despair and turmoil in Mikanjima. Many political opponents of the Matsumoto regime (mainly male anti-SJWs and anti-feminists) as well as "subversive, right-wing, reactionary elements", were purged and tortured in a similar way to the RL Cultural Revolution in mainland China. Also, the economy was struggling and living standards were quite poor at that time.

What was your nation like in the 80's? a single party communist government known as the Carriebean Revolutionary Army, the result of a coup in 1960 led to the regime taking power.
What were some important events going on,
we were still ruled by the Carriebean Revolutionary Army, though in december of 1981, Admiral Oda Nobunga, the successor to the former general of the revolution Takeda Shengin, died. within an hour, a funeral was held and a months worth of mourning was done, mandatory grieving and mourning filled the homes of every carriebean's 75 million citizens, with praises to the former leader being sung daily.
on January 1st, 1982, the successor to Nobunga, Katanashi Setsyoyanara Mourimato, the head of the air force, succeeded him. he then proceeded with a purge throughout the ranks of the formerly loyal Nobungan supporters, the purge lasting a year and killing over 130,000 of the former supporters.
what was popular in your nation
the short style baku baki dress was gaining traction within military homes, and riots against the regime continued well into the 80's.
what trends was going on,
did it have an effect in modern culture today

During the Cold War, both sides attempted to gain influence, neither succeeded. We remained neutral. Not much else was really happening, apart from culture changing, much like everyone else.

The 1980's began and ended with the 20th and 30th years of the Meriladanian Dynasty, during what is called the Era of Oppression. The Era of Oppression is characterized as a time of tyrannical rule, where the citizens were generally well educated and cultured, but mired by nationalistic propaganda and an extreme lack of civil and political rights.

That is to say, while isolated from the outside world on a large scale, that does not mean Sacheyenya had no outside influence. Disco records, literature, and other such things were snuck into the country through various smuggler groups from other nations, and an underground scene, mostly popular among the younger demographics, began to stir in this decade, with both revolutionary and youthful furvor.

It is often percieved today as the decade which first stood up to the Era of Oppression (though such activities as mentioned above occurred since the 1950's, the 80's were the first time they gained momentum), including three key revolutions which paved the way for later attempts at liberating the people; the Farmer's Revolt in 81, the Student Revolt in 82, and another key student revolt in 87.

1982 to all Guangxi people, for better or for worse is known as the year of blood. In the spring of the year, feminists, liberals and others like them rose up in droves to try and seize as much land as possible from the warlords and government holdings. It was a horrendous failure, and in the cities of Nannin, Guilin and Guangzhou especially furious warlord and government troops massacred the would-be revolutionaries in the hundreds and later thousands. By the end of the year when the slaughter and fighting ended, over 50,000 lay dead. With every city in the clique's streets stained blood red, liberalism, it's allies and proponents went into hiding and haven't made any major appearences ever since.

in 1985, the control act was passed which was aimed to make the politics more stable. It essentially turned the clique into a loose confederation of land owners and warlords under the same banner with a watchful government at the top, this modernisation effort was well recieved by all.

in 1987, the military independence agreement was signed, which would force the warlords to modernise their armies and work together better. It also discouraged buying of outside military hardware, but focus on making our own to compete. It has been very successful, with the warlords and large land owners nowadays being friendly rivals for the most part, and with engineers from each place competing to make better hardware, the armies of the clique are as modern as ever.

In 1982, our seventh Prime Minister, Reginald D. McFatton, Sr., finished his first and only term in office, he was succeeded by Rebecca Miyamoto. Miyamoto would be reelected in 1988.

Also in 1982, Alexander Johnson and Michael Adams applied for a marriage license but were denied due to being a same-sex couple. After suing on grounds of discrimination, the case reached the High Court of Gandoor in 1988, who ruled that denying marriage licenses to same-sex couples was unconstitutional, due to wording in the Constitution of Gandoor which defined marriage as "a consenting union between any two persons". Ironically, Johnson and Adams broke up in 1985 and they never married each other.

Home computers became more common throughout the 80's, at the start of the decade, 2% of all households had a computer, and by 1989, 17% of all households had one and 58% of people had access to a computer in some form, whether at a library, school, or some other method.

McDonald's, which entered the Gandoorese market in 1979, would reach the high point of their success in our nation in 1986, with over 1300 locations. The next largest fast food chain, Gandoor's own Ichiban Burger, only had 527 locations in 1986. McDonald's popularity would drop dramatically in 1989 and they would exit Gandoor completely in 2002.

In 1983, Setsuko and Her Family, an animated series based upon the comic of the same name, premiered on RTV. The series is regarded as the most popular animated TV show in Gandoor and is still on the air to this day.

In 1984, Prime Minister Miyamoto gave her now famous "Capitalism is not our enemy" speech at the Forum in response to criticisms that Gandoor was losing touch with the democratic socialist principles it was founded upon and becoming too influenced by capitalist culture. The speech is still used to this day to explain how Gandoor can maintain it's market socialist economic system while also taking influence from culture created or influenced by capitalism. In the speech itself, she pointed out that if Gandoor has any enemy, it is the lack of democracy and freedom in nations, not what economic system a country has.

The Japanese Super Sentai series began to seriously air in Gandoor starting in 1985 (one previous series aired in the late 70's) and would become a popular culture phenomenon here and, due to the fact that all but two series to air between 1985 and 1993 would be retitled to include the word "Warriors", the series is still known as the "Warriors Series" among some older fans.

The Collective People's Republic of Pantopia entered the 1980's with a soaring economy, due to the exceptional leadership of Grand Premier Lionel Arkita, who, by this time had perfected his combination of socialist economic planning with a well performing and growing private sector, which was also infused with government subsidies. This period of rapid growth and economic expansion had begun more than 20 years ago, when Arkita first introduced his system of "soft communism' (now referred to as market socialism). It ended in 1981, when Arkita died at age 70 following an extensive battle with lung cancer. This marked an end to an era, and the nation was unsure of what to do after Arkita's reign, which had lasted since 1959. The nation entered a period of national mourning which didn't abate for more than a year. The Communist Party also faced a dilemma that it had not had to deal with for 22 years, choosing a new Grand Premier. They quickly and simply decided to appoint Arkita's right hand man, Raymond Merkota (named after Jack Raymond, the founder of the CPRP). He pledged to continue the country along the same path of soft communism, but instead turned to a hardline model once elected. His short, 6 year reign was marked by heightened tensions with the US, and participation in the cold war which Arkita had tried to avoid. When conflict arose in Indonesia, Merkota sent in troops to try to establish power there. This eventually led to a proxy war, and almost a real war, between the two. Over 100,000 Pantopian troops died fighting the anti communist guerrillas, and after 3 years of this the people demanded a new Grand Premier. Massive anti-war demonstrations occurred in Republica, Loyola, and other major cities from 1985-87. In November 1986, the government started attacking protesters, and killed over 100 in Usonia in one incident. The party feared revolution and struck a bargain with the people. They would remove Merkota immediately and pull troops out of Indonesia in return for the end of protests. This settled the population and Grand Premier Nguyen was given power in early 1987. The rest of the 1980's saw good economic growth even as the USSR started to collapse.

What was your nation like in the 80's? Not very different from what it is now.
What were some important events going on? Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1981 sparking a new golden era of unprecedented economic and cultural growth. Foreign Policy-wise the Cold War continued with successful interventions in Grenada, Lebanon and Nicaragua stopping the spread of communism. In 1989 Reagan's Vice President George H.W. Bush was elected President.
What was popular in your nation, what trends were going on, and does it have an effect in modern culture today? Musically Thrash Metal originated and reached it's peak during the 80's.
When it came to films a golden era of Action Movies emerged with stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jean Claude Van Damme, Steven Seagal and Chuck Norris becoming household names. Meanwhile Video Games suffered an Industry Crash in 1982, but with the release of Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 rebounded and enjoyed great popularity. Culturally patriotism and capitalism rose once more following the hippie socialism of the 70's. 80's culture is still held in high regard thanks to nostalgia to this golden age.

Costa Fiero entered the 1980's on the back of an oil boom owing to two oil crises in 1973 and in the late 1970's which lasted until 1982. Prior to then, the government used the oil revenue to finance cheap loans from developed economies, especially the United States, in order to develop the country's economy and infrastructure. However, these loans were short term and this meant that banks demanded billions in loan repayments from the government virtually overnight. As the crisis depends, the country elects Miguel Jiminez Cordova as the new president. An oil glut further hampered the government's ability to make loan repayments and despite Jiminez's attempts to restructure government spending and pay off the debt, the country defaulted in November 1982.

The default came with an increase period of instability in the country as security forces found themselves severely hampered by cuts to defence spending. The government accepted a repayment plan from the country's creditors in 1983 but this lasted for two years until Jiminez lost the presidential election to right-wing candidate Eduardo Rios Enriquez who turned to the International Monetary Fund instead. Between 1985, the government implemented austerity plans and neoliberal reforms which were deeply unpopular. An oil price collapse in 1986 further hampered the government's efforts to rebuild the economy and this resulted in a new wave of even harsher spending cuts, including fuel subsidies. This dramatically increase transportation and food prices which provided the necessary spark for riots which occurred in the capital and elsewhere in 1989. During these riots, hundreds of people were killed and martial law was declared for the first time since 1960. Rios was swept from power in 1989 by socialist candidate Ernesto Frias Guzman, who began more reforms and saw an economic recovery during the first years of the 1990's.

Costa Fiero followed the western trends within fashion and music during the 1980's, although it's primarily remembered for the bad things that happened during this period.

Thirty years ago, in 1986, Antonius of the Noble House of Maro proclaimed himself Emperor of Mindhar and began a tireless military campaign—first to reclaim the ancestral lands that corresponded to what was then the "Province" of Mindhar under the rule of the Dominion of Ischia, and then to conquer the Dominion of Ischia itself. This campaign lasted seven years. In 1993 the Ischian military formally surrendered to Antonius Maro and Mindhar became an internationally recognised country, but that's a bit out of the scope of this thread.

Prior to 1986, Mindhar (and Ischia-that-was) was in fact not all too different from how it is today, apart from the name of the government and the colour of the people running it. Vaurians, the white-skinned colonial oppressors of the Mindhari, made up approximately twenty-seven percent of the population (today it is closer to nineteen percent) and controlled the government whilst allowing the rest of the country a free hand—including the eight great houses and the many minor nobles, which proved to be their downfall. The Houses, after all, are always recruiting, and many ethnic Vaurians were tempted into swearing loyalty to one or another, even if the leaders remained unaffiliated. Technologically, the nation remained backwards, apart from Salvastria and a few other key cities where the wealthiest Vaurians made their home. There was a fair bit more freedom in terms of religious affiliation (nowadays everything but Tsiva and freethought are banned) and social norms (but these were foreign social norms: eg decriminalisation of homosexuality and pornography, both prohibited in Tsiva, and now both illegal). There was, perhaps, slightly less economic freedom, and less concern for the environment (which nowadays has become so polluted with chemicals and unregulated rubbish dumping that it has become a government concern willy-nilly). The national GDP per capita was lower, though its increase is not due to greater wealth across the board but due to more resources being concentrated in the hands of the noble families and prominent industrialists—modern-day Mindhar has been described as unrestricted capitalism gone wrong by ocialist activists. (Mostly ones outside Mindhar, the ones inside the country usually being in jail.)

Perhaps most notable for Mindhari is that before 1986 there was no indication that the House of Maro was in any way more powerful than the other seven major houses—indeed at the beginning of the 1980s wealth and respect was concentrated in the House of Severin, and the Maros would not have gained control of the nation if they had not prevailed upon the Severins for support. This is a contentious point among Severin vassals, who of course believe Lord Augustos Severin should have become Emperor instead. Meanwhile, military strength in the 1980s was concentrated in the House of Davu, which committed three armies to the House of Maro before learning that the Severins were supplying the money. (The Davus and Severins hate each other, and would never have worked together knowingly.) Davu vassals argue that, essentially, their House won the war for the Maros, and therefore Lord Konstantin Davu should have become Emperor. Since Antonius Maro is still in power and has not named a successor, this argument is likely to continue for some time.

1980's were a pretty good time and remembered fondly by many today, being compared to the civil war, economic stagnation, and Communist Civil War of history puts it in a rather positive light. The time period though at the time was full of anxiety over the impending death of General Yoshirou, who had been our dictator since 1954. He had left it pretty unclear who would succeed him and battle lines were being drawn at the time. The civil war broke out in 1989.

Culturally it was an interesting period of time in that the culture was focused on being classy and trendy at the same time. Owning a fountain and a vineyard was all the rage. The cultural attitude is thought to have resulted from the country's traditionalist outlook combined with a desire to be as up to date with the rest of the world as possible.

Unlike every other nation in the 1980s, Guayador has commenced a period of isolation and nationalism in fear that the globalization happening around the country will cause the culture to die out. The form of government has changed from a constitutional republic to the fascist directorial republic Guayador had when it was founded as a response. Nationalist propaganda was rampant, the military was hailed and the nation was seriously loved by the residents. Eventually, in 1987, Guayador was then considered an autarky as it was independent and free of any outside intervention due to its isolation. The rate of technology as well as the quality of life and economy dropped exponentially as a result. Eventually, in 1989, the people successfully launched a coup d'etat against the fascist government and reinstalled the former constitutional republic. The economy and the quality of life went back up, and Guayador was no longer isolationist nor an autarky. Globalization immediately found its way inside the country and new technology and knowledge was introduced.

The 1980s impacted the following generations of Guayadorians. Guayador's culture and traditions are still being adhered to by citizens. Guayadorians have also become stereotyped as 'conservative people', due to the fact that they won't introduce new and liberal laws that they believe contradict with their culture. Despite all the conservatism, foreign products and local products are appreciated equally.
