2015 Spanish Election

Postby The Lotus Land » Fri Dec 04, 2015 8:17 am

Candidates
Mariano Rajoy (in office), People's Party. Conservative.
Pedro Sánchez, Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. Social democrat.
Pablo Iglesias, Podemos. Left wing, anti-austerity.
Albert Rivera, Citizens. Centrist, liberal.
Alberto Garzón, Popular Unity. Socialist, anticapitalist.
Andrés Herzog, Union, Progress and Democracy. Centrist, social liberal.

Nationalist Parties
Republican Left of Catalonia: Left-wing Catalan nationalist.
Democracy and Freedom: Conservative Catalan nationalist.
Basque Nationalist Party: Conservative Basque nationalist.
EH Bildu: Left-wing Basque nationalist.
Canarian Coalition: Conservative Canarian regionalist.

EDIT - Election results:
PP/People's Party: 123
PSOE/Spanish Socialist Workers' Party: 90
Podemos: 69
C's/Citizens: 40
ERC/Republican Left of Catalonia: 9
DiL/Democracy and Freedom: 8
PNV/Basque Nationalist Party: 6
UP/Popular Unity: 2
EH Bildu: 2
CC/Canarian Coalition: 1

With this results, any party is able to reach majority (176). Even with pacts or coalitions it would be extremely difficult to reach that number.
Which coalition/pact do you think is more likely?
If some parties abstain, a government in minority could be formed. Which parties do you think could form it?
Will Spain need to face new elections instead?
And quoting a user: If we do end up with another election, what are the thoughts on the results of that? Will IU join with Podemos? Will PP/C's manage to snag a victory?

Not Spanish. I think y'all have a political scene all sorts of cocked up. I guess I hope it ends up with there being a coalition between the SWP, Citizens, and UPD. The People's Party is shit, but if I were Spanish I'd vote for them over Podemos if it came down to it.

Actually Falange still runs for the elections, but they hardly get any votes. Most of the people who supported Franco now vote for the People's Party or Citizens.

I'm probably voting for Pablo Iglesias, since I think he is the best candidate to end with the two-party system that has led the country to a major crisis. I feel betrayed by the Socialist Worker's Party, which has participated in several corruption cases and doesn't seem to be leftist anymore.

In my opinion this election will finish with the two-party system in Spain once and for all, considering the first four candidates have chances of becoming the next Head of Government.

Do you know who will you be voting for?
If you're not Spanish, what do you think of the political situation in the country?

I'm spanish, I support Podemos. Ciudadanos and PP will probably govern together, though, which is sad

Yeah, that's the most probable scenario. I don't think I could survive four more years of Rajoy, so let's hope for something different.

I dunno. I know of all the Spanish political parties, but in such a decisive election, I don't want to add my two cents for the Spanish people. It just doesn't feel right for me.

The PP has done a decent job, but honestly, they' also show corruption and economic mismanagement.

Why is there 5 liberal parties and only 1 conservative party?

"Liberal."

Lol. Liberal ≠ Left-Wing. There are 2 centrist Liberal parties, 3 Socialist parties, and one big conservative party.

Well, that's an oversimplifcation, but think about it this way. Before 2011, Spanish politics were dominated by moderate right wing and moderate left wing forces, both of which would alternate having parliamentary majorities.

Thanks to economic stasis and growing political disillusion, radical parties, such as Podemos and Catalan independence movements, have become quite successful. The C's are fairly moderate, though they certainly lean left. It's become sort of a place for disillusioned People's Party and more moderate Socialist voters. Podemos is just SYRIZA's Spanish counterpart, if we want to be simplistic.

Spanish isn't a left wing nation in regards to popular opinion, it's just that a lot of people have an anti austerity attitude.

Wouldn't PP be more accurately translated to "Popular party" The name is rather fitting, considering that they are a populist party, that only seeks to stay in power.

I've read that Podemos has ties with Venezuela wants to make Spain like Venezuela. I've no idea why people would like that.

Those are lies. Podemos has actively criticized Venezuela, and condemns them for their arrests of political enemies.

These aren't lies. They haven't even hidden their ties and admiration for Venezuela.

Podemos is far and away the best, but Ciudadanos is a good choice for the non-socialists among you.

I highly doubt it. Podemos didn't participate in the debate of the 75 political prisoners in Venezuela and, unlike other parties, didn't support the action of other parties to condemn the Venezuelan government.
