University Students need therapy after seeing Confed Flag

The offer came after the university’s “chief diversity and inclusion officer,” Sean Huddleston, described the display of the small Confederate flag sticker as a “bias incident.”

According to Metrowest Daily News, students filed two “bias reports” within the past month as a result of a student displaying the flag in some way. The most recent bias incident – reported on November 19 – was a report of a student having seen a Confederate flag sticker on another student’s laptop.

In an email to students, Huddleston did not declare a ban on displaying the flag, but claimed that it upsets some students.

MRCTV obtained the email in which Huddleston wrote:

A student reported a bias incident today, in which the image of the Confederate flag was displayed on a laptop. Many of you may be aware that last month we received a Bias Incident involving two other students for a similar issue. Although related in nature, the two incidents involve separate parties.

The FSU Bias Protocol and Response Team has been made aware of the incident, and will meet to determine any measures that may be needed to respond to the incident. Our primary goal continues to be to expeditiously address and resolve incidents of bias that impede our progress toward a welcoming and inclusive campus community.

“Many see the Confederate flag as an inflammatory symbol of oppression and constant reminder of a dark period in the history of the United States in which slavery was a legal,” Huddleston continued, while “Others may simply view this flag as a symbol of shared southern heritage and in memory of the Civil War.”

Huddleston said the flag and other symbols “are not condoned by Framingham State University, as they violate the core values of our institution and not considered consistent with our desire to maintain a safe, respectful and welcoming campus community for all.”

He further described “bias incidents” as “situations that may not rise to the level of a criminal act, but still clearly communicate offensive or derogatory behaviors.”

Observing that students on campus in general may have suffered a traumatic reaction from seeing an image of the Confederate flag, Huddleston continued, “We recognize that bias incidents are upsetting for the entire campus community, but especially for the target(s) and witness(es) of these incidents.”

“It is strongly suggested that anyone impacted by a bias incident find someone to speak with,” he wrote.

According to FSU campus newspaper The Gatepost, social-media displayed a mixed reaction to Huddleston’s email:

On the popular anonymous social media app Yik Yak, one student said the Confederate flag controversy was “legitimately embarrassing” and “someone is getting in trouble for such stupid bullshit.”

Another student disagreed and compared the Confederate flag to the swastika. Adding, “That’s the issue. In case you were somehow still confused in 2015.”

One anonymous student posted, “Carry a copy of the constitution tomorrow, see how fast the PC police emails fly.”

One student related the bias incident involving the Confederate flag to the Star Wars films.

“So if I have a Rebel Alliance wallpaper, am I gonna get reported to the Empire?”

Huddleston said the university may hold a campus-wide forum on the history of the Confederate flag, so that students can discuss the reasons why they either defend or reject it.

In September, Framingham Patch reported that FSU – a public university – was once again recognized for its “diversity and inclusion” on campus. It received a Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award, which is bestowed on colleges and universities by INSIGHT into Diversity, reportedly the oldest and largest diversity magazine and website in higher education.

Your headline is misleading. The administration stated that anyone who felt upset by the display of the symbol talk to someone about it. Also, please don't use Breitbart as a source.

Well, no, because the college students didn't do anything that required a defense, and I'm saying Breitbart isn't a reliable source because Breitbart isn't a reliable source. Here's the original article they link to:

FRAMINGHAM – With four reports of bias on campus since September, a recent complaint about the Confederate flag could spark larger talks about race at Framingham State University.

Students filed two separate bias reports at Framingham State as a result of another student in some way displaying the Confederate flag in the past month, the school’s chief diversity and inclusion officer Sean Huddleston said. Now, Huddleston said he’s considering a campus-wide forum about what the flag means to different people, to turn discord into education.

This month alone, the school saw two bias reports - complaints to the administration about something a student witnessed or experienced that made them feel discriminated against or otherwise uncomfortable - about students displaying the Confederate flag. The most recent came on Nov. 19, after a student reported seeing a Confederate flag sticker on another student’s laptop.
Huddleston sent out a campus-wide email with information about the report, noting that “symbols such as these are not condoned by Framingham State University.”

The email did not ban displaying the Confederate flag, which Huddleston said would be a violation of First Amendment free speech rights and illegal. Instead, Huddleston said the intent of the email was to make it clear some people construe the Confederate flag as a symbol of hate.

“We absolutely believe everyone is due and should be able to exercise their constitutional rights,” he said. “We want to foster a community and an environment where everyone feels safe and welcome. If we have a student or faculty or staff that feels unsafe based on something that was said or they witnessed, we have an obligation to inform the campus that has occurred.”

Previous bias incidents include two in October over allegedly racially insensitive Facebook posts, according to the student newspaper The Gatepost, and one from April of last school year when a swastika was carved on a student’s car.

In the email, Huddleston included an explanation of why some find the flag hateful while others say it's a symbol of Southern heritage.

Some students on campus, however, called the email and the reports unnecessary. The Gatepost reported students took to the anonymous messaging app Yik Yak to decry the reports, calling them too politically correct. Others on the app defended the school’s actions.
Huddleston said the university routinely reports to the student body when a bias incident occurs. After an incident, the school’s Bias Protocol and Response Team meets to discuss the report and determine necessary response or punishment.

In this case, Huddleston said the necessary response might be a campus-wide forum on the history of the Confederate flag, where students can talk openly with each other about why they defend or reject it.

his conversation comes as campuses nationwide bring race to the forefront. Protests about how the University of Missouri administration handled racial incidents over the years prompted campuses across the country to follow suit. It also comes four months after South Carolina denounced the Confederate flag and removed it from the statehouse lawn.

“I think it is a really, really great opportunity. I don’t think we have enough civil discourse,” Huddleston said. “As these times are upon us, it is all our opportunity to get better. We at Framingham certainly want to be a part of that

As you can see, no student stated that they required counseling. Instead, some students complained about the symbol, and the university stated that they weren't going to ban it due to free speech issues, but that they'd be encouraging a dialogue about the issue, perhaps in an open forum. The "counseling" bit comes from the university head suggesting that if any student felt negatively affected by the event, he or she should find someone to talk to. No quotes from or reference to any student saying that they needed therapy of any sort as a result of seeing said flag.

And that's why Breitbart isn't a valid source.

Nah, it's because us left-wingers can't stand a conservative news network telling people the truth instead of the lies the liberal lamestream media spreads.

It's fallacious reasoning. Just because Breitbart doesn't fit with someone's preconceived notions of the world doesn't mean that they are not posting the truth. Instead of having a temper tantrum, show where the falsehood lies, and call it out on it's bullshit. Just like yumy did.

It's as if the university head has certain preconceived notions about the emotional integrity of their students. Wonder why they might have that notion, I'm sure can't be because they've observed students over time regress into emotional infancy.

But people believe it because it slots nicely into their confirmation biases. They've been taught that college and university campuses are basically IRL tumblr, with massive "safe space" policies that say people are not allowed to be white, heterosexual, cisgender or male in case it offends a single individual on some level.

Thanks to fellow users who took the time to fact-check this, I think I can safely say that this is, in truth, a non-issue, and Breitbart has once again lived up to its long-standing tradition of misrepresenting events that barely qualify as news to produce a bombastic smear against everything left of centre.
