Should illegals be given the right to Vote

Postby Rio Cana » Wed Nov 18, 2015 4:51 pm

So, should illegals be given the right to vote. Currently on our island, our Governor some time ago granted illegals the right to get a drivers license and have a bank account. I really do not think this is a problem. However, he currently wants to allow illegals to have the right to vote in island wide elections. Seems our constitution does not specify that you must be a US citizen to vote for local elections. The non-voting resident commissioner we send to the US can only be elected by US citizens which means illegals would not be allowed to vote for him.

Some say since he has no chance of being re-elected that because of that he is doing this to get the illegal vote. A former governor of the opposition party says he once helped illegals become legal but that he did not support illegals voting in general elections.

Currently, our economy is a major mess, There is talk of a possible default in December. And the only thing the politicians seems to want to talk about is plastic bags, which has been outlawed starting in January 2016, and giving the illegals the right to vote. :palm: What they should be talking about is what is there plan to provide people jobs since unemployment is high but it seems they rather not talk about that.

One result of all this is that the left leaning and right leaning nationalists are in agreement in no vote for illegals. Some people have commented if illegals can get the vote then island citizens from here living in other nations should also be allowed to vote.

Found out that in Maryland there is a town which allows illegals to vote in local and county elections. They say in Europe some illegals can also vote in certain elections. Also, illegals here would have to prove they were living here for two years and are planning not to leave for a long time. So what do you think.

Not until they get citizenship or some kind of residency status.

You're both from PR? Wow.
I also didn't know your part of the nation was in such a shitty condition. Giving undocumented immigrants the right to vote is certainly tangential to keeping the place from exceeding Detroit as the biggest part of the US to default on its' debts.

As a left-leaning nationalist... No.

This whole "giving illegals the right to vote" thing is just trying to make an end-run around the naturalization process, and I certainly don't agree with it. :palm:

I don't see why any adult living in Puerto Rico should be denied the right to vote there.

Well illegals are not supposed to be in the country. So no they don't get the right to vote.

Well, no. Only citizens should have the right to vote.

A better question might be: should illegals be allowed to become naturalized citizens more easily; or something along those lines.

I'd be inclined to say yes, yes they should.

If they can be switched over to permanent resident status, then why not?

The Governor, if the legislatorw approve, can most likely give them permanent island resident. But if US Immigration catches them they will be deported since Federal law goes above local law.
