Úlrik attended local state primary schools as a child, but Benedikt owned a successful fishing business and was able to send Úlrik to Loyolaskóli, a Jesuit boarding school in Ryttaren. There, he became well-connected with many Ryttaren elites and formed lifelong friendships in high places. He attended the University of Heidelberg and received a BA in political science with a secondary concentration in European art history, later attending the London School of Economics, receiving an MSc in political theory. After several years as mayor, he decided to run for the Dagmari Senate in a challenging race against an incumbent from the Centre Bloc. Social strife had been increasing since noticeable Muslim immigration to Áshöfn started twenty years earlier. Úlrik won on a platform on reduced taxation, limited immigration, and anti-EU membership, winning 55%-45%. Since then, he has worked tirelessly for his constituents in Áshöfn, hoping to secure a good future for its residents.

Background: Áshöfn is located in the very far north of Dagmar. The first settlement in what is now known as Áshöfn was founded in the year 1286. It was once a refuge for many of Dagmar's remaining Roman Catholics, who are now heavily outnumbered by members of other faiths. Once a small fishing village, mining rapidly industrialized the town in the mid-19th century. Today, Áshöfn is a relatively large city and is one of the largest northern municipalities. Immigration from Iceland in the mid-19th century gave it a large Icelandic minority which survives to this day. Background: Trevr Karlsson was born in Ryttaren on March 4th, 1980. He attended Austrvegr College in Ryttaren and received a bachelor's degree in Commerce, and moved into his own apartment at the age of 19. When he was 24 he began working as a staffer at a local radio station, 106.1 All-Time Classic Rock. In 2011 he received his own radio show where he talked about news and played his favorite music, which tended towards 50s and 60s doo wop and rock and roll. He is known for his shyness and lack of public speaking skills that has dogged his employment opportunities all his life. In 2016, he was nominated without his knowledge by the irrelevant and minor Liberal Party, which held no seats and was formed in Varland in 2002, to contest Ryttaren South, a riding made vacant by the suicide of Hans Egilsson, in a by-election. The party wanted a public figure to represent them and figured a radio host would do. When told about the nomination, he accepted it, thinking he would never win, and so never ran any sort of campaign. On January 3rd, he polled at 1%.

However, polls also showed a high level of dissatisfaction with the candidates fielded by the other parties, with the Alliance Candidate being a Golden Civics businessman with no prior experience who made a fool of himself on live television, and the NP candidate being an open fascist who never held back from glorifying Hitler. The Vikings did not contest the election and the SDP's candidate pulled out early due to a disease diagnosis.

The Liberals saw an opportunity, and its owner, a relatively wealthy businessman who had tried to get the party going for years, spent thousands of dollars on an ad-blitz campaign, and hired people to go door-to-door asking for votes, raising Trevr as a candidate without any major controversy. In an election that saw a turnout of only 42%, Trevr managed to fend off all other candidates and after the runoff was done he won 54% to 46% against the GC Businessman, after the fascist campaign melted down and the businessman called for the criminalization of unions. His win was completely luck.

This victory was incredibly unexpected and Trevr was, in fact, vacationing in Greece when he heard about the news, and had to rush back to Ryttaren to take his place, and arrived at the airport on the 18th.
