Navy's newest weapon kills at seven times the speed of sound

Postby Goldenson » Tue Oct 13, 2015 1:30 pm

The level of scientific advancement is astounding but should we be frightened or be in marvel?

WASHINGTON -- The phrase "faster than a speeding bullet" just took on a whole new meaning.

"An electromagnetic rail gun is a gun that uses just electricity -- no gun powder -- and, oh, by the way, can shoot a projectile like this, well over 100 miles at Mach 7," said Rear Adm. Matthew Klunder, the Chief of Naval Research, which developed the rail gun. "Seven times the speed of sound."

Article: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/navys-newes ... -of-sound/

Another interesting thing is that the US Navy just revealed its state of the art futuristic Zumwalt-class ship which also has been designed to support the US Navy's railgun I just talked about.

Could this be the beginning of the second Cold War?

This wouldn't be the first time in the last two-three years that someone declares the cold war to have started anew. And I think there was more reason to claim that during other events.

Confirmed the projectile is large enough for nuclear warheads and the navy is modifying existing subs to carry nuclear armed versions of these.

Because of the speed of the projectile America will have the ability to nuke the rest of the world before the world knows its been nuked.

Railgun-armed destroyers?

God dammit, my nation came up with this a couple years ago. Where's my royalties?

Now we just need to put this and the lasers on a spaceship to really be in the future.
Get with the program, US Navy. Why isn't the Zumwault-class a STAR destroyer? Why do we insist on this terrestrial weapons-system stagnation?
Strap some Falcon 9s to the underside of these mammas and lets get us a Space Navy going.

I really, really want this to a stepping stone to plasma weapons. Or pure fusion nukes. Or antimatter weaponry! So many possibilities.

How do you nuke someone before they even know it happened? Once the nuke detonates, everyone in the area will know that it happened.

It won't change anything. Nukes are nukes. Them going faster just provides further reason to not use them

I think he means that by the time the enemy would know that the US has launches nukes at them, it would be too late to retaliate.

It involves 1.21 gigawatts of electricity and some plutonium being used in conjunction with the railgun. *nod*

The nuclear bomb is still far more destructive and dangerous.

So no, there will not be a new cold war any time soon.

Only until DARPA perfects the nuke stealth tech they're working on. Once that comes online we'll be able to nuke anywhere on the planet and they'll have no idea about it.

Oh I know he's satirical

But there are some people who are seriously thinking the rail gun is the best thing since the nuclear weapon

So

Its more for them.
