History of the world and our beloved city:
Welcome to Ultear, a steampunk world where there are no countries, only large cities connected through a vast city of portals. Portals that were remnants of an ancient civilization long vanished from this world. There are few clues to what happened to what we believe can only be our ancestors, but the few clues we do find is that they destroyed themselves. The cities that exist are scattered around the world, some on the ground, some underground, some floating islands and others submerged and finally a couple floating through the sky like flying mountains.
The reason there are no countries and only cities is because the world is a dangerous place, overgrown jungles, endless deserts, freezing tundra, and vicious beasts that populate all these areas. Besides this there are also bandit camps that attack any who dare trek in the wilds and on top of that tribes of humanoids, many not even human, that may be hostile. The ruins of an ancient civilization are also littered around the uninhabited worlds, many places plundered, but many other ruins undisturbed as there are artefacts active there making trespassing impossible. Men can only dream of the treasures hidden in these ruins.
We hail from the city Zirkonis, an underground metropolis knowns for its seemingly endless supply of zirconia. Above ground is a vast jungle neighbouring a desert far to the east and the ocean far to the south. When our previous king died, King Tomia the third, debates got heated up on who should fill the empty throne. While the king had a son, prince Charmera, he suffered from a crippling disease and many believed him incapable of rule. Fights flared up between the people supporting the prince and those who were riled up by lord Atria next in line to the throne after the prince. These fights quickly exploded and things reached what couldn't be called anything else than a civil war. After several bloody fights which destroyed parts of the city and cost many lives, the lord was taken down by an assassin of the Starlight guard, loyal to the royal family to a fault, and the prince took the throne which was rightfully his.
During the fights however one of the buildings that suffered heavy damage was the portal hub and none of the portals would activate any longer. With so much destruction caused to the city, the city could no longer provide for itself. And with the constant unsuccessful attempts to repair the portals there was no way to ask help from other cities or even trade for supplies. Seeing no other options newly crowned king Charmera first of his name, has made a request of everyone willing to join an expedition in to the wilds surrounding the city to look for ruins of the old civilization containing artefacts which may be used to repair the portal hub or take care of the population in whatever way.
If this is unsuccessful there is a secondary objective to find another city so that we may evacuate the populace there so even if the city falls the people will live. To increase chances at a successful expedition people with a variety of talents are required, medics, doctors, engineers, hunters/trappers, navigators, cooks, soldiers, mechanics, artefact specialists, scientists of many subjects, ...
For the expedition a Walking Fortress will be provided, a vehicle capable of traversing any terrain and protecting the travellers within. The only downside is to prevent overheating it needs to cool down 8 to 12 hours a day. During which time it is best to scout ahead for signs of promising ruins. Every member will also be outfitted with a beacon tracker always locked on to the Walking Fortress's signal so they're always aware of in what direction and how far it is from their location.
The world is created at random and by you:
How it is determined what you find on your expedition is determined partially by a RNG system where you have to roll for results, and then by your own imagination, let us start with the dice rolls:
When going on an expedition you will be required to roll an 8 sided die, the leader of the group is the one who rolls (every group assigns a leader):
- 1+2 Animals, no Ruins
3 Humanoids, no Ruins
4 No Creatures, no Ruins
5+6 Animals, Ruins
7 Humanoids, Ruins
8 No creatures, Ruins
The second die depends if you rolled animals, or humanoids. If you rolled no creatures this die is not used:
For animals an 8 sided die:
- 1 Encounter animal, friendly, few, average
2 Encounter animal, violent, few, average
3 Encounter animal, friendly, pack, average
4 Encounter animal, violent, pack, average
5 Encounter animal, friendly, few, strong
6 Encounter animal, violent, few, strong
7 Encounter animal, friendly, pack, strong
8 Encounter animal, violent, pack, strong
What these animals are is completely up to the player, friendly, few, average could for example be a couple of bunnies, or a single deer. With pack this could become a group of deer, or a horde of lemmings.
Violent, few, strong could be a Tyrannosaurus if you so desire and violent, pack, strong a group of Griffons.
Whatever animal(s) you pick just make sure they match the environment you're in.
And as said before it only means you discover them on your exploration, whether you get close to them or they notice you depends on your group and the way you roleplay.
For humanoids a 4 sided die:
- 1 Encounter humanoids, tribe, friendly or violent depending on group’s actions
2 Encounter humanoids, bandit party, violent, few
3 Encounter humanoids, bandit camp, violent, many
4 Encounter humanoids, members from a failed expedition, desperate for help, few
Finally, if you rolled 5 to 8 with the first die and you encounter ruins you need to roll one extra 8 sided die for the type of ruins:
- 1+2 Encounter ruins, shrine to an old god, medium chance of valuables, small chance of artefacts
3 Encounter ruins, temple to an old god, great chance of valuables, medium chance at artefacts
4 Encounter ruin, remnants of an ancient city, small chance of valuables, great chance at artefacts, you probably will want to have the caravan stay here for a while, if recently encountered one – turns in to previously plundered ruins. Special: These places are intact because a powerful artefact prevented entry, either with a sentry system, or an artefact that increases the heat in the city beyond or below survivable temperatures, or ...
5+6 Encounter Ruins, previously plundered, minimal chance of valuables, minimal chance of artefacts
7 Encounter Ruins, small encampment, perfect for making camp, no chance for valuables, minimal chance of artefacts
8 Encounter ruins, crumbled beyond recognition, only a history expert has a chance of finding anything here
Remnants of an ancient city are a big deal, this is why the expedition was sent out, to hopefully find a way to bypass the artefact(s) holding you out and hopefully finding something, anything that can save your city. This is a place the entire group will meet up and will have to work together.
What are artefacts:
Artefacts are devices created by the ancient civilization that have extremely random effects, from nuclear bombs that create a giant forest on explosion to a pair of socks that will always feel warm and cosy. Almost every family has several artefacts in their position and those going on the expedition all have one with them which will be decided randomly by me which they are. There are people who have studied to try and determine what every artefact is and maybe even how to make more of them if they figure out what they are and what they do. But as there are artefacts in all shapes, sizes and appearances this can make it a nigh impossible profession where in some cases simply determining if an artefact is broken or not can already take years, discovering what they are can simply be impossible.

Final note/ extra info:
- Getting injured, or diseased is part of the game as much as exploring ruins and terrain, so don't be affraid of RP'ing that you got injured by a predator or a even simply from a bad fall in harsh terrain.
- The groups that go explore shift because it works with a (imaginary) turn table, some people stay to drive and operate the Walking Fortress, others keep an eye on supplies wile some simply get a chance to sleep at that time. This makes it so that the groups who explore can constantly shift allowing constant different group ups and interactions. Sometimes the "group" could even be a single person quickly scouting ahead.
- Example of a dice rolling program
- More to follow in future edits in case I forgot to mention other things, or things simply change.
