Indian villagers worship newly built toilets

Postby The Ridings of Yorkshire » Sun Oct 04, 2015 3:21 am

http://www.planetcustodian.com/2015/10/ ... -them.html

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi claims 100% success in eradication of open defecation under Sawach Bharat (Clean India) campaign. Against a target of about six million toilets in rural areas, he claims construction of about nine million in one year. The irony is, rural people in the country are worshiping these newly constructed toilets instead of using them.

One of such auspicious moments was captured on camera somewhere in India, which explains just why building millions of toilets in India can not eliminate practice of open defecation.

At one of such homes in poverty stricken rural India, residents inaugurated a newly built toilet by performing proper pooja (worship or ritual performance). The toilet seat and floor of toilet was covered with flowers, while coconut and bananas were offered to the God of toilets (if something like that exists).

A plate was placed at ground, in front of the toilet filled with a cup of sindoor (vermilion), an essential part of most of Indian religious ceremonies, and a glass full of milk as another offering. The toilet, that is nothing more than a latrine-seat, covered with discarded empty rice and wheat sacks, is decorated with garlands and mango leaves. A green ribbon waited arrival of a lucky one who was scheduled to inaugurate the toilet.

Most likely, this toilet, like millions of others which were built during the period of last 12 months, will not be used. It’s a reality and a huge obstacle for Clean India Campaign that despite availability of toilets, people, especially males, prefer to defecate in open. West mocks at India’s obsession for worshiping cows, stones and pervert self-claimed godmen, such as Assaram Bapu, who serves a prison term for rape of a minor girl studying in one of his schools. So, toilet worship shouldn’t be a surprise in rural regions where people have never seen one.

In rural India a facility like a toilet is an alien privilege. People in rural India still believe it’s an unhygienic and unholy practice to have a toilet within house premises, many others don’t know how to use and why to use toilets. A web of other cast and culture-based issues are also responsible for such attitude of people.

The government definitely needs to carry out aggressive awareness campaigns to convince them to use toilets and give up practice of unhygienic open defecation that is responsible for death of 600,000 people annually. About 620 million people defecate in open in the country. A survey conducted by the Research Institute for Compassionate Economics Sanitation Quality, Use, Access and Trends shows that out of interviewed 22,000 people in five Indian states, 40 percent of households with a working latrine have at least one member who still defecate in the open.

Another study by the BMC Public Health states,

“Strongly ingrained beliefs around impurity and pollution and the required rituals for purification and cleansing post-defecation in Indian society may play a big part in the choice to continue defecating in the open”.

Government claims of 100 percent success in building separate toilets for boys and girls in every school in India seem false. The government is only focusing on haphazard construction of toilets, and ignoring the need for educating or training people to use these toilets.

I kind of laughed (maybe in pity) because of this article and that I don't know anyone that superstitious at all in my life that I have actually met, but I need to know YOUR opinion, because it matters, on this (literal) toilet humour, so, post away! (And answer the poll!)

I'm surprised how we can consider this country a "up-coming superpower". Lack of Democracy I can understand. Lack of knowledge I can get. Lack of toilets? Just no.

Having a toilet is something you will learn to appreciate once you are in a situation where you have none. I'm thankful everyday to have functioning and clean sanitary installations.

Superpower status is not about how smart or cultured you are but about having atomic weapons, economic weight and the will to throw it around.

There has been many a long car trip when, upon arriving in a town and finding a toilet with my bladder about to burst, I have felt the need to worship the great white seat of relief.

Superpower is based on things like economy, politics, nuclear arsenal and such. In fact, even America (the US) lacks proper toilets in some remote places, it's not just "undeveloped" nations.

Indian Politics resemble Hitler's. India's economy is based on population, not skill or quality and there military while formidable is definitely not the strongest. Not even in it's region. India is far from developed. Compare Beijing or Shanghai to New Delhi or Mumbai and you'll see what I'm talking about. It doesn't deserve a superpower status

That's not even true. It's blatantly false, they have a lot of skillful IT workers, start-up founders and scientists. They have strong, innovative companies.

then where are the innovative products?

India has done amazingly well from the outsourcing of IT services to the rest of the world but I'm not sure that is going to be sustainable.Indias IT sector is still a small niche which is not backed by further diversification investment into IT product development and manufacturing. Sure 10 million people might be supported by the IT industry but that leaves the other billion in the population unaffected. Furthermore IT servicing has relatively low start up cost which means that as wages rise in India lots of international competiton will spring up to move in on the market.

India needs investment and manufacturing, which is of course where China's avantage lies. China can direct Investment where it wants it and thus China makes everything that the world buys while India just answers the worlds phones.

Well, India has too few toilets for their population. That and the design of most of the toilets they do have ensures that they do not have to worry about things like The Eternal Toilet Thread.

umm they aren't worshipping the toilet.

It is tradition to 'bless' or 'pray over' or do a 'pooja' of anything that's new.

People do pooja of new cars, a new house, a new everything, mostly when they have been needing it for so lon.

I see why many people think its a bit odd to do a pooja for a toilet, but if you think about it, it isnt that odd. Their village may have just got a toilet which means they no longer need to defecate out in the open which is amazing. They are most probablyy extremley happy and grateful for this toilet. Doing a pooja is like saying thank you to the gods for anything. So just like people would do a pooja of a new car or a new house to thank god for it, similarly they are doing it for a toilet.

How do i know this, i stay in India.

India's military is most definetley the stronges in South Asia.
Our politics do not resemble Hitler's.
India is far from developed... i cannot deny that, but we are rapidly developing.

India has not been able to match the PRC's growth because they dont have to run anything by the people or the opposition. We are a democracy and because of that there are several obstacles to economic growth.

Furthermore, a large part of China is still struggling with poverty, much worse than India's

I congratulate our Indian friends on implementing some old Roman ideas... more than two-millennia-old, that is. ;)

No, seriously, good idea. Sanitation is one of the most important infrastructures, and keeping excrements out of fields and gullies is crucial for public health.

When I was in Goa I noticed that the locals defacated through a hole in their floor which emptied under the house. They also never fed their pigs, claiming the animals would always be provided for.

You can guess what happened. While ingenious from a business perspective when the pigs were sold, I have sworn to never eat pork from India again.

"Worshipping" and "giving thanks/blessing" are wildly different actions.

And still the attitude I was introduced to was that "If you kick it, it's a stone, worship it it's a deity". meaning that God is spread everywhere. divided among the objects in the universe. Worship what you will, it makes no difference.

Even the greeting of Namaste means "I bow to the Godhood in you". I see it as being consistent in pantheism.

And if you knew. Ooooh. If you knew what people have to do just to go shit in some places. You might understand the Godhood in a waste disposal system.

actually in the Indus city of Lothal all houses had their own private toilet connected to a covered sewer network constructed of brickwork that emptied into a network of public cesspits. Thats 3700 BC
