However, was it always their intention to oppress everyone, or did it come as a by-product of reaching a greater good? In short, can a dictatorship possibly have good intentions?
Personally, I think they're very hard to come by. Although dictatorships do not always have to translate to authoritarianism, it very often becomes like that. For example, was Vladimir Lenin's dictatorship over Russia- considering war communism and the NEP- with good intentions, or did it have the ulterior motive to oppress others? Some are more clear cut; it was obvious that Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler used their respective ideologies to appeal to a greater good through oppression. As for Mao Zedong, his true intentions have been debated.
So, what say you, NSG? Can a dictatorship or a regime be well intentioned?

People don't tend to think of those people as "dictators" due to their good intents.

But we're not talking about good dictators (and Pol Pot was indeed about as far from a good dictator as you could get), but rather dictators with good intentions.
What did he intent to achieve by murdering his own people? Good things? Every dictator in history probably thought of themselves as the good guy, but that does not mean that they meant well for their own people.
