Most influential flag of all time?

Postby PLESSUR » Sat Aug 29, 2015 3:39 pm

By influential I mean carries lots of meaning (not just within the nation), is instantly recognizable, symbolises an influential or important cause, whether historically or in contemporary times. Here's the reason for my list:

Stars and Stripes: The American flag has come to symbolise freedom, liberty, and half the world during the Cold War era.
British Union Jack: Britain ruled the largest empire the world has ever seen, and the Union Jack has become part of many other national flags, such as Australia.
Soviet Union flag: It represented arguably the most influential movement of the 20th century, as well as Communism's dis-movement in the 1980's and 90's.
French tricolour: Brought in by the French Revolution, influenced virtually all of Europe's modern flags and represents all what the Revolution achieved.
Pride flag, because, you know... *AHEM*

Please post your reasons for your vote and feel free to discuss!

My vote goes to the Star and Stripes. It really has come to represent the world in recent times and the new world order. My second vote would be the French tricolour. It is quite important for us Europeans.

The American flag might as well be a religious icon at this point given how it's treated by some people.

Anyways, the Union Jack definitely takes the cake. A fourth of the world's landmass rallied under the Union Jack. The free world rallied against Nazism under the Union Jack. The Union Jack could not be more influential.

Niel Borgenson's shorts at Camp Hiawatha in the summer of 1986. Changed the world, man. Changed the fucking world. And we all learned a little bit about ourselves that summer, I tell you.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

We are, we're discussing how much people engage in fellatio with the flags. Arguably influential.

So, if you prefer to jerk off with the Union Jack, while listing fairly incorrect points, by all means that's relevant.

The Netherlands flag is the oldest tricolour. Might as well include that, considering it has inspired the old and new flag of South Africa, the flags of Carribbean Netherlands countries and those of several places in the States, including the flag of New York City.

Either the Dutch flag of the Danish flag.

The Dutch flag was the first tricolour flag, and since then thricolours have spawned all across the planet like flowers in mid-spring.
The Danish flag was the first flag to exist.

Maybe people could stop putting forward the flag of whatever country they come from and consider other flags.
