You are a citizen in the Republic of Helisa, a country torn apart by an ongoing conflict.
Since before you were born, Helisa has fought in a war against its neighbor to the northeast, the Republic of Dolna. These countries' histories have been intertwined in power struggles, facing disputes over territory, political differences, and native language, which profiles one quickly as a Dolnite or a Helisian. However, the hostilities have never been as intense as the past ten years have been.
Across the border, battles have raged on, and pushes for border control occur nearly every day. Both sides seem intent on destroying the other for good. Despite the suffering of the citizens on the border, support for the war in Helisa has reached an all-time-high, with contributions to the war effort being on everyone's mind. Day after day, more young people are volunteering to the front lines, eager to fight. This was the path that you chose to take, though it didn't go quite as planned.
You were young, even for the adult-at-16 model that Helisa follows. The military, noting this, chose to deploy you to Alcistern, a small city known for its bustling port. Here, far removed from the harsh and bloody battles of the western front, the two sides have seemed to reach a stalemate, neither advancing or progressing with their ill-equipped and trained units. However, make no mistake: War is dangerous, and Alcistern is no exception.

Welcome to Mothertongue, a twist on the normal Military RP! In this roleplay, you are a young volunteer solider in a fictional country, eager to fight on the frontlines against your country's mortal enemies. However, your inexperience lands you in the city of Alcistern, where quiet days are heard, KIA counts usually remain below double digits a day, and life carries on despite the war. Whether you are pleased or not with your posting, you are to join a unit of soliders much like yourself. And even though the battle rages on, and nothing can be permanent, perhaps you will find comrades, friends, love, all the things joyous in life. But joy may be quickly followed by despair, deeper than you ever thought imaginable. Welcome to war.
In case it wasn't clear enough, I'll say it broadly: This is a Modern-Day Experience Roleplay, not a conventional Military RP. Slice-of-Life is also an appropriate term. While there will be many battles, gunfights, and big metal machines that create wanton destruction, the main focus of this roleplay is the characters in the Helisian military, and their experience in their posting at Alcistern. Think of the story as inspired less by Fury, more by M*A*S*H. The war does not define the emotions, the emotions define the war. Of course, as I said, violence will still play a heavy part in the action, but it will be viewed from a soldier living through the fighting's perspective, not a historical drama's.
Some inspirations for the theme of this story: M*A*S*H, Metal Gear Solid, This War of Mine, etc.

Personality: Mary is a force to be reckoned with. There's a reason she's one of the youngest officers the Helisian military has ever seen: She is all but a combat savant, a natural-born trooper. A no-nonsense leader who commands respect in the heat of battle, she seems to go into a completely different world during combat, one of fury..and of no mercy. Off the battlefield however, she is not much different. A non-nonsense, self-disciplined woman, Mary is isn't formal, but certainly isn't casual; usually not preferring the company of jokes or merits, she tends to avoid building attachments, and sticks to herself as much as she can. However, dig past the soldier exterior and you'll find a morally righteous girl who will defend her unit with her dying breath, and one who may be suffering in ways yet to be seen by others...

Pre-Military History: Mary was born to a chemist and a teacher, and led a seemingly average childhood. Much of her early life is unknown for unknown reasons, though she did run away from her place of residence at age sixteen. She was found and returned home on her 18th birthday, before leaving once again for Military Academy. Passing in just under two semesters out of the usual 3-4, she was immediately placed in the newly opened Alcistern front, and has been quickly advancing up the ranks on her own accord for a steady year.
