Carl Sagan, astrophysicist and atheist wrote:"Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.
When we recognize our place in an immensity of light-years and in the passage of ages,
when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling,
that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual...
The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both."

He manages to not paint the Human race as ass holes when comparing them to aliens as well which is nice.

I've always imagined that if aliens exist, their race has its fair share of assholes as well... that's how I'm writing my sci-fi universe. There are nice people in every sentient species, but plenty of assholes to go around too.
I read a really good short story by Terry Pratchett that made me really want to get into Discworld, but its size is quite daunting and I don't know where to start? What's the name of the first book?

The Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic are the first two books but they aren't necessarily the place to start. I'd suggest maybe Equal Rites or Moving Pictures both are fairly early books but are more stereotypical of most of the other books than the first two are.
