"The entire European continent seems to be unmistakably headed on an collision course towards a second Great War."
It is the Year of Our Lord 1939, and the world is close to the brink of war. Tensions continue to mount between the two main alliances, yet the scars of the so-called Dirty War still remain etched into the European conscience. Twenty two years ago, the Central Powers emerged as the victors of the Great War, using their superior dieselpunk technology and massive industrial capacity to deal a crushing blow to the French-Russian alliance. The cause of that victory finds its roots in the Diesel Revolution, which spread across the world, and following German unification in 1871, the new Empire soon found itself to be at the very center of the Revolution. Fearing this new unified Germany, France, Russia and Britain soon found themselves increasingly aligned against a powerful Germany. However, dieselpunk technology wasn't as widely used as in the Entente militaries, while those of Triple Alliance, later to be called the Central Powers, invested in dieselpunk, producing a wide array of machines and vehicles, who would soon prove decisive in the upcoming war in Europe. In 1914, the Austrian-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed by a member of the terrorist Black Hand organization; the assassination would set off a chain of events, and soon the entire continent of Europe found itself plunged into a war, which would change the history of war forever.
Germany, seeking to knock the French out of the war first before turning against Russia, mobilized their forces and attacked the bulk of French forces from Alsace-Lorraine, rather than through Belgium. Britain, not wanting to join without an acceptable casus belli, and with no violation of the Treaty of London, remained neutral, as German forces, with a wide array of dieselpunk technology, managed to smash through the entrenched French forces, much to the surprise of their military leadership. Making a beeline for Paris, the German military advanced towards the French capital, facing only weakened resistance, with the main bulk of their forces having been destroyed in the initial German offensive. With the French seemingly beaten, Italy joined the war on the side of the Central Powers, and their forces flooded into Southern France. While the French intended to conscript and mobilize more troops to counter and push back the Germans, they were not given the chance to, and a massive fleet of zeppelins dropped elite German commandos and tanks on the French capital, having used the initial invasion as a diversion. In a matter of days, the entire French government who weren't able to flee lay dead in the streets of Paris, and with this, Paris was now in German hands, and France lay at the mercy of the German armies. Facing no British nor Russian help, and with a battered and demoralized army, as well as their capital in enemy hands, the French had no choice to surrender.
As the Germans invaded France, Austria-Hungary launched an invasion of Serbia; despite their technology advantage, however, fierce Serbian resistance coupled with the incompetence of Austria-Hungarian commanders lead to several minor defeats on the part of the Austria-Hungarian military. However, the fate of Serbia was sealed with a Bulgarian entrance to the war. Meanwhile, facing widespread public support for the Entente and agreements from the French to give Romania more land, Romania joined the war on the side of the Entente, which would prove to be a big mistake. With the defeat of the French by late-1914, the Russians had been caught by surprise, and despite being able to make gains in their invasion of East Prussia, they were caught totally unprepared when German forces, turning around after their victory in France, inflicted a smashing defeat against Russian forces at the Battle of Tannenburg, shattering Russian morale and completely pushing them out of East Prussia. The Ottoman Empire, wanting to restore their former respect and prestige, soon capitalized on the defeat at Tannenburg, and within a matter of days their soldiers were flooding into the Caucasus. German forces proceeded to advance into Russia, and despite the defeat of their stronger ally, France, the Russian leadership still hoped to win the war by persuading Britain to join; neither country wanted German hegemony over Europe, but staunch opposition to joining the war without a valid casus belli was able to stop British entry. Romania, expecting Russian support, found itself invaded by both Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria, and while the Russians did send some aid and support, they were mainly focused towards stalling the German and Ottoman advance; however, by mid-1915 it was clear that the Russians were unable to, and with the defeat of Romania, Russia remained virtually isolated against the sheer might and power of the Central Powers. With no prospects of British entry into the war to the aid of the beleaguered Russia, the Tsar would sue for peace in July of 1915, and peace talks would be held, to determine the future borders of Europe.
As the various powers convened at the peace table, multiple treaties were drawn up to deal with each of the defeated countries. The Treaty of Toulouse would finally end the war with France, as the humiliated Great Power was forced to sign it, resulting in parts of Northeastern France being placed under German military occupation, Corsica, Nice, and Savoy being ceded to Italy, and the creation of a new North African state comprising of Algeria and Tunisia. Despite the constant grumbling of the French delegates, with their military in tatters and the government virtually gone, they had no choice but to go along with the Treaty. A separate one, called the Treaty of Warsaw, would finally resolve the conflict on the Eastern Front, as several states were carved out of former Russian territories in Eastern Europe, and parts of the Russian Empire, including Georgia and Azerbaijan, were ceded to the Ottoman Empire. Separate treaties would carve new borders in the Balkans, as Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria split Serbia and a joint Austro-Hungarian-Bulgarian puppet state was propped up in Romania, which was forced to cede Southern Dobruja and parts of Northern Dobruja to Bulgaria. The British Empire, not glad to see a rapid German victory and dominance over continental Europe, stepped in, attempted to use their influence as the world's strongest naval power and empire to prevent harsher terms to be imposed on the Entente, achieving some success. However, despite attempts at stalling and Britain's constant presence in the negotiations, the delegates and representatives of the defeated Entente eventually would sign the treaties by 1916, with their only alternative being a continued war with the Central Powers, a choice which would only bring more damage to their empires
With the conclusion of the Great War, the Central Powers emerged as some of the strongest nations in Europe, but the short war would have massive effects on war and technology, as countries rushed to study this new dieselpunk technology, which had been able to achieve stunning victories over France and Russia, two vast empires that had been defeated. Britain and Japan were the quickest to incorporate modern dieselpunk technology, followed by France, Russia, and the US in the 1920s. In the aftermath of the Great War, the victors of the war, mainly Germany, boomed, as the defeated powers were forced to pay reparations. German markets dominated continental Europe, and given their military prowess, it seemed that no one - except the British - could defy the Germans. Despite this post-war prosperity, there were post-war problems as well, especially in some of the Central Power countries, namely Austria-Hungary, who still faced the problem of ethnic tensions between minority groups within their Empire. By the 1920s, the whole system and balance in Europe were showing cracks, as France and Russia recovered from the war and revanchist sentiments resurfaced in those countries. Acquiring dieselpunk technology from the British, who viewed France and Russia as a balance to Germany and the rest of the Central Powers, they improved their militaries. However, France, after having been dealt two defeats by the Germans, was nevertheless cautious about its policy towards Germany, and sought to gain more allies against them, namely the British Empire. With the British not wanting to see another rapid Central Powers victory, and the threat of the German High Seas Fleet in mind, the Empire became increasingly aligned towards the French and the Russians.
In 1928, the world was hit by a global recession, and this signaled the end of the rampant post-war prosperity of the Central Powers. Despite this, most countries were able to recover by the early 1930s, when tensions began to rise in Europe following the signing of a 'defensive' treaty called the Paris-Moscow Pact, or simply just the Pact. The Central Powers took this as a sign of rising French and Russian power and influence, and sought to rein in their puppet states as well as seeking new allies to counterbalance this rising power and influence, which, if left unattended to, could post a serious threat to the Central Power's current dominance in Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe. As this happened, nations such as the United States of America remained largely isolationist outside of what was happening in the Americas, although they did incorporate dieselpunk technology into their military. A nation with gigantic industrial and military potential, it is not yet certain what side they will take in a potential war between the Pact and the CPs. In East Asia, Japan, a backwards feudal country prior to the Mejii Restoration, has risen to a prominent status, although they are still not viewed as equals to the Europeans. They continue to seek to expand their empire and influence in order to be seen as on par with the European powers. In Africa, the few remaining independent countries sought to preserve their sovereignty from the various colonial powers, often aligning with some of them in order to do this.
By the mid-1930s, tensions continued to remain frosty between the Central Powers and the Pact, and although no military action has been taken, mainly as a result of Pact cautiousness in regards to their approach towards the Central Powers, war still seems inevitable by many. As the world seems to be headed towards a collision course towards a second Great War, it is up to you to lead your nation - will you lead it to victory and prosperity, or will it crumble, unable to bear the strain? You decide.
Rules
- No godmodding/metagaming, of course.
- Don't be rude/disrespect other players. Seriously.
- Be realistic; don't automatically know your enemy's movements and deployments.
- I'm a bit conflicted in regards to the dieselpunk technology, and how much of it I should allow; you should bring any inventions/ideas to me before using it in the IC. There will be tanks, zeppelins, "walkers" (basically mechs), etc.
- The OP and Co-Ops word is law, but I reserve the right to overrule the Co-Op if it becomes necessary.
- No one-liners, even if it's a meeting. At the very least, you should have a paragraph of 3-4 sentences.
- Don't argue in the OOC if it does not pertain to the plot or IC. If you must, bring it over to TG.
- There are allowances for alternate history in other nations besides those directly affected by the events in this ATL, and if you aren't sure if I'll accept it, ask a Co-Op or better yet, the OP. I'll tell you if it's allowed or not.
