Beijing gets the 2022 olympics

It used to involve Oslo and Stockholm as contenders, but within the past few months it was between Almaty and Beijing. It's now given to Beijing.

1. Why couldn't Oslo and Stockholm have worked together to give one of them the Olympics and help the other with the initial investment to host them, offering to pay them back once the revenue comes in?

2. Why couldn't Beijing have been blacklisted from the Olympics altogether in light of their human rights record, forcing them to choose from among other candidates?

Hosting an Olympics sucks. It's an enormous burden on the host city. Look how well Athens did. Be glad China got it and not you.

Summer would be a definite possibility though, if you can find a city stable enough to host it.

Well, I know that Nairobi has bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, but Kenya is sadly not ready for such a committment. The only countries I can think off at the moment that can do such a job are maybe South Africa, or Nigeria.

Very, very few hosts ever make any sort of profit off it. To my understanding, Los Angeles in the 80s was one of the very few to do so, and mainly because nearly all of the Olympic facilities were repurposed after the event was over with, and in some cases, existing facilities were used instead of building brand new ones.

It doesn't. Cities that host the Olympics lose millions, if not billions. Good thing African countries don't win, because I can't think of any that can afford to waste so much money on nationalistic grandstanding.

London made a profit too, but take into account that The Olympics seem so commercialised that it was clear all the money was made through sponsorship deals, advertising and repurposing the Olympic village as expensive flats.

Lets just hope by at that time, Nigeria would actually have made some progress in poverty reduction, and the fight against corruption.
