The best example currently would be the Cecile the Lion controversy. Why do people care so much about an animal they never cared or heard about before this incident?

Honestly, the only animal that we should be treating as human is a dog. Sure, we shouldn't give the rest brutal deaths, but we shouldn't be giving them luxurious lives either.

I think, in a way, it's disgusting. This is an example of everything that is wrong with the internet. Sure, the dentist was completely in the wrong (at least the guides were) and he was a cunt. Maybe he should have lost his job, he should certainly be prosecuted by someone. At the very least, lose his hunting permit.
But the reaction the internet gave him is completely un-fucking-called for. The internet's massed hordes have no concept of fucking moderation or proportionality. This happens a lot.
And then, it's directed over a guy who killed an animal. And we're seeing this a lot with the targeted response against hunters.
It's not over a rapist, or a murderer. It's not a war criminal or Josef Mengele or the hundreds of thousands of dead in Syria and Iraq since IS and the Syrian Civil War, or those dead in East Ukraine.
No. It's a person who took a legal weapon and (usually) killed an animal in a legal manner.

This general apathy extends beyond the consumables and into wild animals.
The best example currently would be the Cecile the Lion controversy. Why do people care so much about an animal they never cared or heard about before this incident? Who they will promptly forget in a weeks time? I think the vast majority of the people share my opinions on animals (except for individual pets of theirs) whether consciously or unconsciously and I believe the problem people have here isn't that he killed the lion but because he is an old white wealthy man.
A couple weeks ago thousands of endangered tortoises who were thought to only be numbered into the hundreds were found stacked in cargo holds in SEA. Five endangered rhinos were killed a couple days ago in Kenya, I think the numbers left on that species can be counted on one hand with left overs. And another 41,000 species of animals are on the endangered animals list while 16,300 are close to extinction, which nobody cares about. I dont care about it, you dont care about it.
How much do you really care about animals? Cecil the Lion? Industrial farming?

They've been our companions for nearly 40,000 years. There's no reason not to be respecting a species which helped us survive, hunt, and overall, get this far.

Why not sheep? They helped us make the jump from a nomadic society to an agricultural one, and they don't bite things and act annoyingly.
