Yeah wasted food is a problem. I don't know how to properly solve it, but there should definitely be greater awareness campaigns launched by both the government and private industry to bring it to the attention of people and have them at the least become more informed.

I don't know if this could work, but I thought of a tax on wasted food.

I went to a buffet last night and while I ate quite a lot I didn't finish my last plate, how would things like that work into your idea?
Would I be charged a few extra bucks or something along those lines?

I'm just throwing an idea around, I doubt it's practical.

If you don't want to watch it, the basics are:
In the United States, up to 40% of the food produced is never eaten, much of it being thrown away long before it expires or even begins to go bad. The video discusses the adverse effects of this waste, including malnutrition and production of methane in landfills. It also points out that although many food producers would be willing to donate their unsold products to feed the needy, the fees involved in doing so make it far too detrimental for them to consider it.
Personally, I believe the fees involved in donating these foods should be lifted, lessening the amount of malnutrition and food in landfills.
So, what say you, NSG? What should the US do about its food waste problem? (2 votes, in case you think more than one method should be used)

Just giving countries food over the long term only encourages bad policies. If a place needs food, its population has exceeded what can be supported.

No, the fees are requested by food banks.

I don't understand? So do food banks charge people who donate food to them or does the government tax businesses for food which is given to food banks?
