How do we know we exist?

Postby Dirtcrakia » Fri May 29, 2015 9:37 pm

How do we know that reality or universe actually exist? Is there really anyway to prove that our reality is true? How do I know the world, the people, time around me is real. I don't see people doing other things outside of my senses, so how can someone be so sure they are real? You may reply to this thread, but how do I know that what I'm seeing is simply a product of my imagination, or real? I'm I the only one real? Are you the only one real? Can someone prove reality is true?

You can prove to yourself that you exist, but you cannot prove that you're alive very easily. I'm too tired to explain now.

"I think, therefore I am," - René Descartes. I'd recommend 'Meditations on the First Philosophy' from Descartes, or for something less dry, David Hume's, 'An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding'. Both try to provide a rational answer to what is real or not.

Your thread title is answered pretty simply. To quote Descartes "Cogito ergo sum." ("I think, therefore I am.").

Not really. I mean, I'm pretty sure that the world and other people exist, but that's mostly because I don't think I'm actually imaginative enough to come up with everything I see everyone else doing or able to surprise myself quite the way other people can.

Also, if I was just totally inventing reality for myself, I'd give myself the ability to fly because that would be sweet. Since I cannot fly, I must not be the inventor of my own personal reality.

Although Descartes is a bit lazy about getting the world to exist since he basically invokes God for it to happen.

I heard this thing about how the material world doesn't exist the way we see it. Because if you think about existence like cause and effect, then the cause cannot be the same as the effect. For example, if you think a Twinkie exists as a cause to the image you see through your senses of a Twinkie, then the Twinkie can't actually be the way you see it because, Cause does not equal effect? I dunno I'm tired.

I roleplayed Rene Descartes for an AP Euro philosophical debate. I completely agree with you. The whole idea that God must exist because we can conceive in our minds such a being is complete bull. I can conceive a 6-legged snake with eagle wings and the head of our lord and savior Max Barry.

True, helps to ignore the whole God stuff. Stick with the first meditation for the stuff that can really be taken seriously.
