PROLOGUE

Image

No one expected the bombs to fall in 2021. Not even the wealthy politicians and the world elite of the United States of America could have foreseen their world engulfed in the blinding glow of nuclear fire. Hundreds of millions of lives were ended in the blasts and fallout, and all of mankind faces the terrible nuclear aftermath of this obliteration every day. It’s been 66 years since the self-destruction, and the Earth lies in a quiet dying slumber as it rots away under the soft glow of man’s ignorance. But as for the desert state of Arizona... that’s a different story.

Arizona holds Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, the largest power plant of any state in the US, and when the bombs went off, so did Arizona. This cloud of radioactive fallout eroded the sky, and left the whole region under the mercy of the sun’s oppressive gaze, choking it in the heat and twisting the land into a barren hell. This absence of an ozone also transforms the Badlands of Arizona into a frozen wasteland at night. Those who did not die from the fallout and learned to spare themselves the scorching rays live under the brutal law of land, where ‘survival at any cost’ is the unspoken code. The harshness of Arizona’s grand mesas and valleys has been intensified, many of those who have lived under the scorching savagery of the new world have been gnarled, their humanity cast aside for survival, turning them into mindless barbarians willing to do anything to ease their pain and unquenchable rage. While some communities have formed out of the ancient wreckages that scatter the land, trying to establish lives of civility, trade, and order, these have yet to stand the decay of the earth reborn, many not lasting more than 5 years before they fall victim to ruin in the newly dubbed Badlands of Arizona.

The world of Arizona changed is a vicious and cruel place, the scorching desert plains being known as the “Badlands” by all that inhabit it. The new dead sky is unmerciful in it’s retribution, and has changed the arid sierra into a red hot hell on earth, temperatures rising to an almost constant 120 degrees fahrenheit in the burning Badlands, searing the skin and eyes of those unprepared. Sandstorms are savage in the prairies, being known to rip the flesh off the back of anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in one. With these dangers, however, comes opportunity. Scroungers and ruthless mercenaries from outside the state come pick the bones of the many untouched caches that lay in the god-forsaken pit of the Badlands. As well as these scavengers, sects and factions have risen up to try and seize the unscathed wealth that lies with the dead in Arizona, along with the inhabitants left in the Badlands.

Though all seems lost for the last gasping breath of humanity in Arizona, there are whispers and tales of treasure and a new beginning tucked away in the depths of the long damned city of Phoenix. However, the stories of promise were also trailed with the warning of unspeakable abominations and dark cruelties that sleep in the dead city. The living settlers and nomads of the Arizona saying the abyss that is Phoenix has been distorted and corrupted by the glow beyond compare of any other crater in the Badlands, and anyone foolish enough to venture there would meet an assured and agonizing death. But the promise of wealth and salvation is too much for anyone to refuse, and those looking for the prize of Phoenix are not deterred by the legend of evil that rests there. From this new hope seeping out of the ruins, mercenaries and factions alike fight to claim the bounty from the ashes of Phoenix.

That’s where you come in.

You are a treasure-hunter.

No matter what path may have lead you to this point, you are now set on a journey through the scorched earth of Arizona to retrieve the fabled riches and power that lie in the dark heart of Phoenix… But you can’t do it alone. You'll need to find others like you, and form a party. You'll need a faction to back you. Only then, could you hope to trek through the inferno that resides there.

Can you wake the Phoenix from the ashes?

INTRODUCTION

Image

Phoenix Rising is a character driven nuclear post-apocalyptic RP set in 2093 radioactive Arizona wasteland, created, written, and OP’d by Orvius and Violante. By combining all the things we love about the nuclear apocalypse genre, and leaving out all the things we find absurd/silly, we hope to create a more gritty and down-to-scorched-earth apocalypse roleplay experience.

Phoenix Rising came about through several conversations that we (Violante and Orvius) had about the aspects we liked and didn’t like about the genre. Both being adamant fans of series like Fallout, Wasteland, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., etc., we would have discussions about what we so enjoyed about this category of apocalypto as a whole. From that, we sought out to create our perfect image of a nuclear wasteland, and Arizona: Phoenix Rising came to be.

Water is a commodity to kill for, life is scarce and death is norm, the new scorching sun is one of the most lethal of dangers, sandstorms strip the flesh off your back, and defined morality is gone with the old world. Welcome to the Arizona Badlands.

WARNING: This roleplay will probably be a hard PG-13. Expect profanity, some gore, and extreme violence. If you’re easily offended, then you need not attend.

We hope you enjoy your stay.

RULES

Image

We will be very scrutinous in these rules. Too many roleplays have been dropped dead by just one constant offender, and we will not tolerate this. If either of the two OP’s consider any offender too much trouble, and remove them from the roleplay, this is the final word. You have been warned.

1. READ THIS WHOLE DAMN THING: This point must be stressed. If you do not read this entire opening sign-up sheet, then you will not be adequately familiar with the RP rules/character application rules/story/OPs/etc. If you don’t read ALL of it, then we’ll know. Trust us, we will know, and we operate on a zero tolerance policy.

1½. READ THE APP RULES BEFORE POSTING: This may fall under rule number one, but it is very important that you not apply a character without understanding the rules about posting, we seriously can’t stress this enough. An offender of this rule will either be corrected once, or be immediately rejected, depending on the severity of the offense. Zero. Tolerance.

2. YOU’RE NOT A BADASS: Players may create determined characters if they wish, but determination does not equal badassery, and you will not be the “Elite Sniper Super Cool Brooding Commando Dude Who is an Expert in Every Martial Art Ever, and Can Take Bullets Like a Tank”. Your character is a normal human being. A survivor, just as everyone else in the wasteland. If your character is shot, stabbed, maimed by an unspeakably disfigured beast, etc., then your character will react the same way any normal human would. Wounds are not to be taken lightly in this RP, and your characters fighting skill is expected to be reasonable. You are not taking on 6 raiders single-handedly without taking a scratch. Anyone violating this rule to boost their inflated ego will be immediately removed from the roleplay. Your character CAN die. We are dead serious.

3. RADIATION WILL KILL YOU: Make no mistake. Radiation is nothing you can just brush off. If the OPs have indicated that area is flooded with dangerous levels of radiation, and you don’t happen to have a full MOPP suit on (you won’t), then you better not go in there unless you want your character to drop dead instantaneously.

4. NO FIGHTING ON THE OOC: If you have a problem with another player, then please, take it to the telegrams.

5. YOU MUST POST A PARAGRAPH: No one liners will be acceptable in this roleplay. You must post at the very least, a paragraph long post each time.

6. YOU CAN NOT BE AFFILIATED WITH ANY OF THE SET FACTIONS: You are not allowed to have any past experiences with any faction, you can not have any favors with them, nor can you "have any friends on the inside", you are lower than a nobody.

GENERAL RULES:
No Godmodding.
No Metagaming.
OP’s say is final.

You should know the rest.

FACTIONS

Image

In the Arizona Badlands, there are only two types of people: The ones with the firepower, and the ones without it. While there are many people banded together under one flag trying to make their claim for glory, there are only a few power players that can really call themselves the factions of Arizona. In order to truly succeed in your quest for the heart of Phoenix, you will have to gain some favors from these powerful factions. Be aware however, that these factions are ruthless, extremely dangerous, and always looking for the upper-hand in any encounter. They may be able to help, but only if you are willing to do their dirty work first. As any waster in the Badlands knows, you never trust these people with your back. Not for a second.

Favors can be won from factions through jobs; naturally the higher priority, the better the pay. Do note that these powers are bitter rivals to the end in their struggle for dominance over Arizona, and working too much in favor for one will sour your reputation with another. The factions do not like being crossed, and they take these things very personally. Any waster with a gun and a deathwish can be a mercenary, but if you gain notoriety for doing high-attention jobs for a faction, and word catches wind, you will end up on their enemies’ hit-list.

The Sons of Flagstaff are widely feared newcomers from the cold plateaus of northern Arizona. Alleged descendants of a group of eccentric preppers who managed to survive the blast, the Sons are fully dedicated to the survival of humanity and are a rather well-equipped, if not scrappy, militia force holding on to the armory their ancestors left behind. The Sons of Flagstaff have only recently been making the scene in the ever-changing world of Arizona's land-struggles, as many had thought that the northern regions were uninhabitable, laid waste in radiation and pestilence. These northmen, however, have seemed to emerge out of thin-air from the north glow like ghosts in gasmasks. Frightening to most, they've only been seen appearing in the past three years, their stories of the north being met with disbelief by nearly all denizens of the Badlands. They have been known to try and recruit wasters and settlers in central AZ, telling anyone who will listen that the establishment of civilization requires strong backs and soldiers willing to give their lives for the cause of humanity. Those in the Badlands tend to very much distrust these new arrivals, as they have also been known to ruthlessly put down anyone they perceive as a threat, and raid food and ammo from Guild supply coaches. Some even say that the Sons of Flagstaff are conquering towns and settlements near their territory, in an effort to forge an empire. Rumors have persisted about how the Sons of Flagstaff have turned the old northern city into a fortress, complete with strong walls and constant guards. How true these tales are, and to what extent, remains to be seen by the rest of Arizona. Only rumors, and the word of the mysterious Sons of Flagstaff themselves can attest to their achievements in the revival of mankind.

The Guild hail from the market settlement of Payson in central Arizona. Men of business to the core, the Guild was crafted during the height of Payson's prosperity in 2078, as the merchants and traders of the town came to an agreement and formed the "Payson Guild of Trade and Commerce" to protect their interests and revenue. Since then, the Guild has taken on a life as it's own. When Payson's popularity as a trade outpost lessened, or the populous died off, the Guild took it upon themselves to expand their prospects and create beast-driven Guild Stagecoaches to carry supplies throughout the territories of the Badlands, and set up small trade outposts across the land. These Stagecoaches are large makeshift wheeled carts and recreational vehicles driven by what appears to be some sort of deformed descendant of the bulls and cattle that once roamed the ponderosa valleys of old-world Payson. Arguably the most neutral of the main factions, the Guild has little interest in the politics of AZ, rather more focused in how to increase their profits. This has made the Guild many enemies, as well as slight allies, depending on who they double-cross. Known as much for their shady dealings and cut-throat lack of ethics as they are for their mercantile, the Guild is renowned in their use of mercenaries and assassins to protect their goods and handle anyone that gets in the way of their wealth. Their most recent enemy are the northmen calling themselves the Sons of Flagstaff, as they have been raiding their supply coaches and intruding on their territory with their own trade. The Guild's number one priority at this time is to destroy or dismantle this threat, as soon as possible, and are openly willing to pay guns-for-hire to do it for them. These amoral men are known far and wide for their selection of weaponry, gear, food, and supplies as well for the intrusive way they come into settlements and indirectly, and sometimes directly, crush their competition. It's little wonder why the people of Arizona do not fully trust these backstabbing mass-merchants, but their treasury in stock is almost too much for anyone to resist. If you do decide to do work for them, be sure not to cross them, as they will advertise a price for your head.

Little is known about the Luke Remnants, other than the type of speculation and stories that’s shared around scavenger’s campfires. ‘Reclusive’ hardly is a just description for these near-apparitional men occupying the massive garrison once known as Luke Air Force Base. No one outside the base has had the opportunity to speak to the Luke Remnants, and with good reason; they shoot on sight without so much as a word. There are other isolationist groups in the Badlands, but one thing makes the Luke Remnants different. They are armed to the teeth with high-grade military hardware, ballistic vests and helmets, faces always covered by black masks, and some claim to have even seen helicopters fly over the Air Force Base area, equipped with machine guns and pilots with trigger fingers for anyone unfortunate enough to wander near the base. Due to their anti-social behavior, there remains only theory and guesswork as to who these mysterious and powerful solitary beings are. The most popular assumption is that they are raiders who found the base deserted and looted the gear, though their advanced patrol formations and knowledge in the operation of aerial vehicles is left unexplained by this thesis. The more superstitious (or crazy) claim that they are the damned souls of the original soldiers stationed there, cursed and forsaken to forever live in the base for their part in the apocalypse, and that is the reason for being so attached to the base for as long as anyone can remember. No one knows for sure, but there’s no asking the Remnants. There have been tales passed around trading posts that the masked Remnant patrols have been going farther and farther out from the home base, and there have even been reports of them clearing out and scavenging from old buildings, though that necessarily hasn’t put the ghost theories to rest. For the more rational, it begs questions: how could a group be isolated for so long? How have they not died out yet? Conjecture and questioning can only go so far, and unless you’d actually manage to get an audience with them, you can never know. All that is known is that they are the last in the Badlands to hold on to the remains of largest military base in Arizona, and they sure as hell are using it.

Everyone in the Badlands has their favorite poison, and chances are, the boys from the Rincon Valley Cartel have it in stock. Just like the Guild, the Rincon Cartel are shrewd businessmen, but they have the one thing that the Guild lacks: chemical knowledge on how to cook the Badlands’ only steady supply of narcotics. The harsh cruelties of the apocalypse are often too much for survivors to bare, and most are all too eager to find an escape. Some look to alcohol, others to sex, but nothing is more potent in it’s euphoria than what the Cartel supplies. Home to the ruins of the former town of Rincon Valley in Pima County, this faction supposedly can trace the roots of their organization to the original drug-cartels of old-world Mexico that made Arizona their romping ground for catering their merchandise to the entire nation before the Blast. Whether they actually hold ties to those cartels or if they just do in spirit is debatable. What’s not debatable is that they entirely dominate the market, being one of the only groups of the Badlands that have the surviving insight on how to craft their deadly pick-me-ups. Hearsay is that they assimilate or execute anyone that has the know-how, in order to safeguard their status as the supreme marketers of opiates. Their primary export is Meth and Krok. Meth can be pretty expensive, especially since the highly synthesized concoctions needed to cook a batch are only growing more and more scarce, so for the poverty-stricken inhabitants of the Badlands, Krok is the most popular choice. Krok, formally known as Desomorphine, is a very cheap and easy to manufacture version of Heroine, only requiring a little bit of Codine found in common cough syrup for a high ten-times as strong as morphine. Unfortunately for the buyer's, use of the toxic drug causes chronic necrosis of the skin, blood vessels, bone and muscles, causing them to literally rot away to the bones, their skin becoming cracked and scaly, hence the name “Krokodil”. The addiction to Krok is so hard to kick, that users come back again and again even as the limbs fall off their bodies, often selling their children to the Cartel to become indentured servants to the gang’s operations. This is only one instance that demonstrates the cruel indifference the Rincon Cartel have for the wasters of the Badlands, but just as their old-world counterparts, they are widely feared for their murder and mutilation of anyone that would possibly interfere in their business, and they thrive off that reputation. There isn’t such a thing as a law on drugs anymore, nor criminals, but if you asked any waster wandering the Badlands who the local crime lords were, they’d most likely point towards the Rincon Valley Cartel. Fear, efficiency, and ruthlessness are a way of life for these dope-peddling cutthroats, and they make sure to remind everyone why they are the only Cartel in Arizona anymore.

Otherwise known as the Legion of Tucson, this is a large and prominent gang who holds influence from Casa Grande, San Simon, and Tubac, everything within their border is considered their property, including the people. They typically allow entrance into their territory via a toll, however those who fail to come up with anything they want, will typically end up becoming indentured servants or just killed for entertainment. The gang was founded in 2021 by Hogarth Leuven, the chief of police in Tucson. He emerged along with other survivors from the devastation of nuclear war, the city of Tucson fell into crime: murders, theft, law was all but gone. militia type gangs were beginning to populate the city, he couldn’t stand by and watch the city he swore to protect go to hell. Due to his position before the warheads went off, he commanded a great deal of respect by people who knew him. So it wasn’t difficult to rally up friends and former co-workers. With his task-force created he set off on a mass purging of anything he viewed as unlawful and wrong, he followed his own moral compass and began to clean up the streets of Tucson, first it was militias and gangs, next it was people who wouldn’t contribute to the band of heroes, soon the just and righteous task-force were lynching those too old to work, or people who didn’t share Hogarth’s beliefs. As time continued on and Hogarth’s passing. The gang now known as Ferocactus grew restless, they had brought peace and prosperity to Tucson in a time of anarchy, and their numbers swelled with new recruits. Their next war chief, Levi Ankle-Twister had plans to expand. He sent his army of thugs and delinquents on a grand conquering spree which finally ended at Casa Grande, if only because the radiation levels emitted from the Maricopa County area were too great to continue further. They are currently building a slave trade to fund their conquest, as well as trying to devise a way to enter Maricopa County, or more specifically Phoenix, in hopes that it will hold a way to destroy their enemies and fuel their empire. They say it’s for a noble cause, of course. To “keep law and order”... Whatever the hell that means. So, if you’re in the Tucson area, you’ll have to pay tribute to the Ferocactus if you value your life or your freedom.

There are many more factions that scour the Badlands of Arizona, but you will just have to meet them for yourself...

OOC NOTE!: Your character may not have any strong ties to any of the factions. We want you to start with nothing, so I repeat, NO PREVIOUS OR CURRENT AFFILIATION WITH ANY FACTION.

NPC SYSTEM

Image

As deadly as the treachery of the Badlands’ angry deserts is, your greatest threat is without a doubt the people living there. On your quest for the treasure in the heart of Phoenix, you’ll have to meet some of Arizona’s most unsavory characters in order to gain favors for your journey. Meeting said characters face to face can be a bit intimidating, but it’s a necessary venture in order to cross the swathes of lands that they hold claim to. You’ll also need to speak to merchants for ammo and water, and doctors to stitch up your most recent wound and keep you from bleeding out on their floor.

OOC: In order to better visualize and direct attention to important characters in the story, we have concocted the NPC system. This allows for better and more organized interaction with key characters around the Badlands that are crucial to advancing the plot. We hope that this will keep players from becoming stuck in the plotline and eventually losing interest.

An NPC will include a portrait of the character, a name, a written description, and usually dialouge. Let’s take a second to look at an example down below.

EXAMPLE NPC

NPC

Image

BADLAND WANDERER

This waster is covered head-to-toe in what seems to be a large protective leather poncho, complete with a hood. This poncho bestows a bit on an eerie silhouette to the man, and it doesn’t help that you can’t see his eyes past his goggles, and he has his lips covered some sort of dust-mask. His hunched stature is also a tad menacing, like how a cat or a coyote arches it’s shoulders when threatened, though the heavy rusack on his back might have something to do with it. Rusack or not, the entire air about this man reads “itchy trigger finger” and it’s enough to make even the hardened mercenary think twice about getting too close.

The hooded figure finally speaks after a few awkward silent moments, which can be assumed he spent sizing the rest of the party up. “If you folks wanna buy something outta my pack, then I’ll be happy to oblige y’all. If not, stay the hell back or I’ll blast you into so many pieces your friends will get tired of looking for ya.” He shouted over the dunes, the clear tone of uneasiness quivering in his voice.

At the time that a portrait like the one above is shown on the IC the OPs will write for that NPC, and interact with the other players. This is to avoid things like players skewing the lore one way or another, and to make it easier for the OPs to set-up jobs and mercantile interactions.

APPLICATION

Image

Here we’ll explain the rules for character application by example.

Name: (Give your character a name. Note, that if you name them an equivalent of “Markus ‘Cool-Guy’ DeathSlayer”, your app will be frowned upon. Show some humility, please.)

Gender: (Pretty much self explanatory.)

Age: (16-70 is the acceptable range.)

Ethnicity/Race: (Arabic, European, Native American, African, Indian, Asian, Slav, Russian, etc.)

Appearance: (A written description of your character's physical attributes, mostly the face. You may submit a picture in a spoiler, if you so desire. A picture is appreciated, but a written description is still required.)

Personality: (Very important, should be complex and very detailed section. This should include how your character interacts with other human beings.)

Skills: (What your character is particularly skilled at. REMEMBER! Rule Number 2! Don’t go overboard on this section. Keep your skills modest. Useful, but modest. We will not tolerate self-proclaimed “bad-asses”. Our RP is not here to fuel your ego at the expense of others.)

Weaknesses: (Weaknesses. Could be anything. A bum-knee, asthma, low mental capacity, horrifyingly large spinal tumors… Could be anything, but you do need them. Ideally, this should tie into or be somehow involved with your skills.)

Outfit: (What your character is currently wearing. Satchels, eye-protection to spare your eyes from the sun’s rays, some sort of sand-storm protecting jacket/coat, general clothing. Please, don’t put a kevlar vest.)

Equipment: (Supplies must be rationally limited. Functional guns with ammunition is not acceptable. If you push to have some kind of working firearm, then you better have a damn good reason, and ammunition must be minimal. You’re starting with nothing, as we want you to progress and find better equipment throughout this RP. Choose a melee weapon.)

Bio: (Should include character’s history, and be at least a paragraph, should be the longest entry. Impress us.)

Code: Select all

Character Application

Name: Gabriel

Gender: Male

Age: 28

Ethnicity/Race: Caucasian/Northern European

Appearance: Standing at 6’ Gabriel has an imposing figure, though he does tend to slouch. His chapped pale skin usually lays hidden under a face-wrapping and hood, so only his light-blue eyes and few greasy blonde locks peer through the opening in his hood. When unmasked, his facial features reveal a very worn man, with deep creases dug into his forehead making look older than he is. Though there is something very stoic about his face. It must be his nordic heritage, but there is a real sense of sobriety in his deep brow and calculating hawk-like grey blue eyes. A distinctive dreary sadness is also present on the face of the man, his thousand-yard stare and apparent removal from matters at hand betraying his obviously troubled inner-thoughts to those he meets face to face . However, that’s when he has his face uncovered, and eyes not goggled, which is not very often in other company or wandering the Badlands.
Image

Personality: Gabriel is not what you would call a “people-person”. In fact, he tries to avoid them when he can. Dealing with people causes him to be rather… uncomfortable. He shakes, stutters his words, even feels sick to his stomach, and out here in the wasteland, awkward situations like that never bode well. Especially when not shooting you on sight is considered an act of kindness out here. So, Gabriel keeps himself distant, trying only to discuss with the traders that he sells salvage to, and even then he makes sure to get straight to the point and tries not to make eye contact.

Skills: What Gabriel lacks in people skills, he makes up for in resourcefulness. Living out in the isolated wilderness has taught him valuable lessons in survival. He knows much of the terrain of South-Eastern Arizona by memory, and prides himself on efficient pathfinding through mesas and ravines. He also has taking up crafting makeshift weapons and supplies in his spare time, salvaging things like scissors and scrap metal to fashion shivs, devious improvised weapons, and he’s even been known to carve little wooden trinkets as well.

Weaknesses: Gabriel’s unintentionally sinister demeanor has gotten him into many a predicament before, and has found himself under the barrel of a gun on several occasions just for cause of suspicion. As well as his absent charisma, Gabriel is found lacking in many of his fighting skills, relying on dirty tactics and clever alternative weaponry to make up for his inadequate strength.

Outfit: Gabriel is almost constantly shrouded in a long rawhide cloak-like jacket that reaches down to his ankles, complete with a hood to save his light skin from the sun. This longcoat drapes off his shoulders, and gives the illusion of a larger figure than he really possesses. Under that is but the bear essentials. A filthy old shirt that used to be white at one point, tattered dirt-caked cargo pants with many useful pockets, mud-crusted goggles, and ancient leather boots with the soles nearly all worn out and held with duct-tape. The typical wastelander apparel. These garments are seldom seen however, since Gabriel finds a sense of security of sorts in that long hooded cloak. Something of a comfort object, he supposes. Rather practical as well. He it bought two years ago at Geronimo Trade Post for six pounds of coyote bushmeat.

Equipment: Gabriel does in fact, live out of that dusty rucksack he’s often seen hauling a off his back. Stuffed to the brim with everything he owns, this bulky awkward backpack is responsible for carrying his impressive entourage of equipment (which some might call junk) and any salvage that he scraps. Among his most used items is his rifle, a cracked and rusted bolt-action 308. Remington Model 700 that’s had it’s barrel bent and something jamming up the action. He hasn’t shot it in a while, but it works for scaring off would be highwaymen. The rest of his usual accessories include binoculars, shivs, a large shard of a mirror, and any odd contraption he may have made. Gabriel has made his livelihood off of making do with very little, and he’s quite proficient at it. Anything he may have on him may be sold off or scrapped later.

Bio: Gabriel is what you might call a scavenger, or as they are called by the local flavor a “Scrapper”. Scrappers salvage anything useful and try to pick out bits and pieces from the usual looted areas and try to make them workable or at least presentable to traders. Gabriel has been at this for nearly 10 years and has become a frequent visitor of the Geronimo Trading Post, with nearly monthly drop-offs of salvage. Though he does bring persistent business to the post, he is not very warmly acquainted with any of the traders there. Hell, they don’t even know his name. Gabriel says very very little to the merchants there. Near nothing other than what he’s selling and what he’s expecting to be paid for it. Many of the traders occupying the post are rubbed the wrong way by this, as one could imagine. There are many rumors among the handful of people at the post about just who this eerie scrounger is, though none are consistent with each other. It doesn’t help the matter that some of the traders say that they can sometimes hear him quietly muttering to himself, as if he’s having a conversation. Some have theories that he’s the runner for a local powerful raider gang, collecting supplies as they gain power. Others say he’s a lone gunman assassin, only dropping in to resupply before the next kill. However, the truth of his life is much more prosaic than the suspicion of his only colleagues. Gabriel lives in the hills and vistas of Graham County, wandering the landscape for salvage and hunting, and living in a constant state of isolation. While many would consider this life a wretched ordeal, he prefers it that way. In fact, Gabriel finds that it’s much easier when he’s away from anyone else, and he doesn’t have to worry about who he’s going to have to shoot, or very possibly be shot by. Not to mention the whole process makes him queasy. No, he much more favors the solitary life he’s chosen. Much easier that way, or so he thinks...

I'm a sucker for post-apoc.

But this is just post-apoc done... right.

Count me the hell in, and I'll be (probably thinking up and mentally fleshing out my character instead of sleeping tonight and then) working on my app tomorrow.

I'm always one for flattery! :D Thanks for the compliment.

We're both fans, and not-so-coincidentally I happen to live in Ay-Zee. I know the state well enough to know the geography and what have you, and thought it a good setting. Besides, what better place for a hellishly hot desert wasteland than the Copper State herself?

But no, there aren't any Desert Rangers in this roleplay. It's our own original IP, it just happens to be set in Arizona. Like I said before, I'm a big fan of pretty much any post-apocalyptic franchises and that includes Wasteland.

Not really a fan of cyborgs though...

Character Application

Name: Alice

Gender: Female

Age: 16

Ethnicity/Race: Caucasian / Canadian

Appearance:
Alice is rather short, standing around 5'0'' and having a thin perhaps underdeveloped frame due to chronic malnourishment. Her face is slightly pointed with an upturned nose and thin, chapped lips and round, grey eyes. Is missing a tooth beside her canine. Sandy hair is cut short and is often unkempt. Complexion is light with freckles dotting her face, which often receives more sun than other parts of her body. Scars mark her right arm and back from a previous brush with death.

Personality:
Alice is distant if not aloof, many times pessimistic, unable to make close connections but is not averse to socializing and working alongside others. Hypocritical and sarcastic, brave in a reckless manner, she possesses many insecurities concerning her own abilities and often strives to prove herself capable. Quick to anger at perceived slights. Vocal with her own views and opinions. A warped sense of right and wrong leads her to harshly judge those around her. Is willing to help those she takes pity on. Values monetary goods and is all to willing to steal from those she dislikes. Due to various incidents Alice has no preference for men or women but generally avoids intimate contact.

Skills:
Alice possesses a greater than average memory and, while not photographic, would be hard pressed to forget details. Flexibility and her small size allow her to more easily fit through tight spaces, something which she often takes advantage of when needing to hide. She is rather quick but her endurance allows only for limited sprints at full speed. Despite how loud she can be she is capable of sneaking without alerting others. She can read. She is intelligent and good with math without needing to try (though her need for it is few and far between).

Weaknesses:
Alice is prone to bouts of depression, and while she downplays its severity it does negatively affect her and her performance. Physically she is weak and cannot carry much in terms of weight/gear. She also tires rather easily. Emotions sometimes control her and she is often immature about many things. Has a habit of pissing off those around her. Often acts before thinking. Violence, sometimes lethal, is the answer. Has tremendously horrible luck (though it sometimes works out in the end).

Outfit:
Alice wears ragged clothing that has mostly been scavenged and haphazardly repaired over time. A wide-brimmed hat contains her mop of hair while a tattered scarf and tinted goggles protect her face and eyes. A torn poncho (patched in mismatched fabric) is her main defense against the harsh sun with little to nothing on underneath. Dirty khaki cargo pants offer more pocket space and scuffed boots protect her feet. Threadbare gloves reaching up to mid-arm protect her hands. A leather satchel is her main storage space that is normally worn beneath the poncho and behind her. A machete is strapped to her left thigh and a holster to her right.

Equipment:
    - Bottle Caps: she collects them.
    - Bottle of Water x2: most valuable thing she currently owns.
    - Coca~Cola: an unopened glass bottle of soda, no doubt stale; hoping to sell.
    - Disposable Lighter: good for a few more lights.
    - Glasses: to help with reading fine print.
    - First Aid Kit: a basic medical kit that is in serious need of resupply; enough to treat minor wounds.
    - Flashlight: manual charge, still works.
    - Food: jerky, canned goods, and other non-perishables; not much.
    - Machete: old and bent blade but still cuts well.
    - Needles: medical tools (rather dirty) that she has kept on her person.
    - Playboy Magazine: recently found, sometimes read.
    - Shotgun Shells: scavenged but useless to her.
    - Taurus Handgun (model Raging Bull), black metal: damaged and unable to fire, but still good for show and threats (bluffing); belonged to a former guardian of hers.
    - Tinted Goggles: cracked in the right lens but useful against the sun.

Bio:
Alice was born somewhere in northern New Mexico near the Colorado border. An only child, her small family sought refuge away from a struggling post war civilization, opting to make it on their own strength. For several years the family was able to survive, hunting and farming to some measurable degree of success. Alice, still young, would help with various chores or, when not needed, read from her father's ever growing library of books, becoming adequately versed in various subject matters ranging from history to mathematics. For the most part life was simple but good.

At age twelve Alice would witness the death of her mother and father, killed by a roving gang of bandits who happened upon the homestead. Hiding, Alice barely escaped with her life and was left to wander the wasteland alone. Near death, she was soon found and rescued by a strange man: he spoke little if at all and was exceedingly rare to catch sight of without his filter mask in place. Broken from her traumatic experience, she latched onto the man and would travel along with him for some time. The man, a fortune hunter, often scoured the wastes of the world in search of valuable objects for which to sell. Capable of defending himself, the scoped rifle slung across his back quickly became a defining characteristic of his persona. Though he spoke little and never once mentioned his name, he and Alice got along fairly well, forming a warped father/daughter bond as they journeyed south. Alice, naive of the world after having been isolated for so long by her parents, would quickly mature on her travels with the man, growing pessimistic to the plight of mankind. Still, her time with the man was enjoyable if not happy given the circumstances of their meeting. He sought fortune in the ruins, and soon enough so did she.

Sadly it was not to last. The man disappeared a year after their meeting, supposedly killed protecting the girl that had since become his partner. A final act of heroism in saving her life by sacrificing his own, having come into conflict with a hostile gang of bandits near the New Mexico/Arizona border. Given his satchel and supplies, Alice was forced to flee, a decision she still regrets to this day, as the man led the bandits away from where she headed. A few years wiser from her travels, she was able to survive on her own, though would struggle a great deal for the next several months. Wandering about with little purpose, she soon took it upon herself to travel west into Arizona, having heard tales of fortunes to yet be found, intending to continue on when the man could not. Honing her skills as she went, Alice became somewhat capable of surviving the harsh realities of the world despite the odds stacked against her, her journey west marked by dangers for which she still carries the scars (several run ins with bandits). Having lost faith in humanity as a whole, Alice instead looks for fortune.

Character Application

Name:Aaron Washington to only his close friends and his tribe, Ayastigi (Warrior in English) to outsiders

Gender: Male

Age: 17

Ethnicity/Race: Caucasian/ Native American

Appearance: 6 Feet tall, average build, Brown hair and eyes, angular face and high cheekbones. Has several tribal tattoos and markings.
Image

Image

Personality:Aaron is a hard worker. He finishes his missions and jobs quickly and efficiently. He is quite socially awkward and has trouble communicating with others. When he does get to talking though, he can ramble and tends to be annoying. He will never back down once he has picked a cause, he must see it through for the sake of honor. Surprisingly, he does have a soft spot for people in need, which also gets him into more trouble than it's worth.

Skills: Aaron is a highly skilled frontiersman. He has learned how to survive in harsh climates the hard way. He is an extremely skilled warrior, being one of the few in his tribe able to slay the Equa Yona (the Great Bear in their language).

Weaknesses: As stated above he is almost impossible to get along with when he talks. Aaron has no real education so he cannot read or write. Also puts honor before reason, leading to very tense situations. Doesn't understand the workings and customs of the 'civilized world'.

Outfit: Armor is made of metal scraps and leather over patchwork clothing made out of cotton and animal hides. His helmet is a steel visor and gas mask over a cloth head wrap. The mask does little of what it's supposed to, he uses it mostly for show as it is the customary head-dress for his tribe.

Equipment:
Short, longbladed Spear (Blade made from scrap, heated and shaped into a rough blade. Shaft is a tough wood.)
Three throwing spears (Same as above)
Hide Buckler
Large Sheath Knife
Tomahawk: His tomahawk is his most prized possession and was passed down to him by his father. It is made entirely from steel with a rough leather grip and has several feathers and bones on strings tied to it. It was most likely manufactured before the Great Apocalypse. Aaron keeps it in pristine condition.
Dried meat (Roughly one week worth of meat)
Waterskin
Bedroll
Gieger counter, only barely functional

Bio: It was not until much later in young Aaron's life that he realized he was very fortunate to have the life that he did. Aaron Washington was born in the Equa Uyvladvdvi (Great Gap, otherwise known as The Trench) to the chief of a nomadic tribe that had wandered from the east before settling in the fertile canyon. His first memories were of wrestling with his brothers in the sand, helping his mother with the chores, and watching his father direct the tribe. He learned the important lessons of the wasteland from a very young age; not trying to wrestle the bears, not going downriver to the Fire-Hands tribe, not drinking water that makes the death box tick, among the most important. Aaron's tribe was not alone in the canyon, for there were many other tribes that had found the fertile land to live in. The Fire-Hands were downriver of his tribe, they had weapons that could kill with fire and sound. Upriver of his tribe were the Kalkori, a pacifistic group that relied on Aaron's tribe for protection in exchange for food and supplies.

Things seemed hard to Aaron at the time. With the constant threat of the Fire-Hands, cursed water, wild animals and outside tribes, he had much to worry over in his short-lived childhood. Sadly, things only got worse for him and his people. In Aaron's sixteenth year, the river flowed red with blood. The Kalikori tribe had been exterminated by some marauding army from the east, throwing their corpses in the river. Many people died of sickness soon after, and other from dehydration for refusing to drink the water. The Fire-Hands took this opportunity to destroy their weakened foe, obliterating Aaron's tribe. Aaron was the only one, to his knowledge, to survive. He fled to the east, past the still burning Kalikori village, and to clean water. Aaron wandered south from there, down into Arizona. He helps people with their problems, asking only food, water and lodging in return.

This app is very promising! I like the outfit quite a bit. There's only a few things that need to be addressed.

Is his name Aaron Washington or Dorne as it is the skills and personality tabs? Also we'd like a little bit more description as to his appearance so we can get a better visualization of his face. As for his equipment, I like that the list is modest as our character creation rules required (I'm glad someone is reading it), but I'd like to know what the spears and tomahawk are made out of. Jagged sheet-metal, lawn-mower blades, etc. Anything would be fine, as long as it's reasonably junky. I'd also like to point out that the gas-mask will not be very effective as we want our players to start out with as little valuables as possible, though you may keep it, just understand that it'll be a pretty crummy one.

Oh, and one little side-note. It's a small thing, but in the Badlands the locals call the Grand Canyon "The Trench". Your tribe may call it the Great Gap, but for the rest of the Badlands it's the Trench. Just don't want to confuse any lore here :) (See the Map).

With those things in mind, I'm ready to accept your post once you have finished your bio. Good work here, I'll be happy to add Aaron to the posse.

Can I just use my app from last time, or do I need a new one?

Welcome back! :)

We'd like you to make a new one, please.
My nation does not reflect my RL beliefs. If it offends you, then you can firmly shove it up your ass respect difference and continue on with your day.
Libertarianism, Individualism, Free Religion, Freedom of Speech, Life-Liberty-and-the-Pursuit-of-Happiness, Right to Bear Arms, Public Liberty (I'm the Anti-Party party), and Anti-Plutocracy(POWER TO THE PEOPLE).
If you believe this is a human right we're seriously going to hunt you monsters down. We see people putting this "right" into their constitutions more and more everyday and it is absolutely appalling. There is nothing more depressing than a bear without arms, you sick fucks.
