Date Format of your Nation

Postby The Northern Kingdoms » Thu May 28, 2015 11:53 pm

Does your nation use D(D)-M{M[M(M)]}-Y[Y(YY)]? M{M[M(M)]}-D(D)-Y[Y(YY)]? Y[Y(YY)]-M{M[M(M)]}-D(D)? Y[Y(YY)]-D(D)-M{M[M(M)]}? A different date format?

(Optional) What's the history of that?

The Northern Kingdoms use D(D)-M{M[M(M)]}-Y[Y(YY)] and Y[Y(YY)]-M{M[M(M)]}-D(D), such that it fits well with the international norm.

I use Monster Girl Encyclopedia (although set on modern time) as a medium for roleplay (my nation is not limited to it, though). I am an MT nation (set in today), with experimental and a few functioning PMT technology. My nation is when Sweden smokes much weed, takes much LSD, takes up more arms than normal, and dates a monster girl (mamono).

Because of a lot of European influence, the date is DD-MM-YYYY. However, when writing the date in numbers, the traditional YYYY-MM-DD order is used.

Today in Hariko is 30 매 2015, or 2015.5.30.

Time is a twenty four hour clock: 15.30, for example.

The nation of Seamus-Tropez uses the standard DD/MM/YYYY date format in official documents and paperwork, mainly due to an influence from European nations, specifically the French region.

So yeah, you might as well predict that most of the replies to this thread in the future will say that their date format is DD/MM/YYYY, just like most of the nations' posts before this one.

The official format is yyyy/mm/dd. This format is the one used in all government agencies and documents, state-owned industries and businesses, and is required for all shelf life and other expiration date tags (except those that use a separate 'international' format).

This is remarkably different from the formats used in nearby countries. The reason why this format is used is because Fonnish people prefer to write in a dd/mm/yyyy format (e.g.: the Fonnish write 30 May 2015 or 30/05/2015), while Ostish people use a mm/dd/yyyy format (e.g.: they write May 30 2015 or 05/30/2015). Thus, the yyyy/mm/dd format was adopted by the government to avoid "favouritism" towards either side, and to avoid confusion on dates like 02/07/20XX, which means "2 July 20XX" to the Fonnish, but "February 7 20XX" to the Ostish.

While government officials must use the official formats in their documents, private businesses are free to use whichever format they prefer, except in legal documents like contracts, which have to use the official format. This means that media like newspapers use whatever format they prefer; predictably, as an unwritten rule, all newspapers within the historical borders of Fonidia use the dd/mm/yyyy format, while newspapers within the historical borders of Osteyon use mm/dd/yyyy. However, this can lead to a bit of confusion in the Central regions where the old boundary was located, since nowadays (and even before the Union), most cities and towns there are split into 50/50 of both, and some towns physically located in Fonidia have more Ostish inhabitants and viceversa, although people living there usually know about this 'rule'.

The capital Royal District is located in the Central-Eastern portion of the Union, directly south of the old border, in the Fonidia side, which means that the dd/mm/yyyy is used in media based there, even though the native population is evenly divided between Fonnish and Ostish people.
