(U.S) Schools aren't Cool.

Postby The Island of Quickscopers » Thu May 28, 2015 12:35 pm

I think the school hours in the U.S is getting out of hand. Most them in the U.S start around 7:00, then ends around 14:00. No big deal right? Well, that is way too early compared to me and some other countries. Let's take Britain for example, they require you to register (check in) by 8:30 (about) and they end school @ 15:10 (again, about), and Britain are in the top in terms of education. And the U.S isn't the greatest in education.

Bringing the too early part again, teens are sleeping terribly due to school hours and homework. And sleep can affect performance (academically) and IQ.

Speaking of homework, it is also getting out of hand. Top performers in education such as Denmark and Japan do not apply the homework principle. Homework can take up to 2.5 hours which distracts teenagers from social interaction, which is healthy for the human mind. Only a tiny percent of schools in the U.S take out the homework principle.

So NSG, what do you think?

Compared to China https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlbJJxxBBTs the US is slack.

And your assessment of Japan leaves out the fact that over half the students go from public school directly to "cram schools" or juku every day to continue studying. That's more rigorous than the homework burden in most places.

Schools ending at two? Any I've heard of end 2:30 at the latest, usually 3. Mine goes 8-3, though I wouldn't mind 9-4.

I'm in high school and I find homework to be helpful when it comes to test time.

As a matter of fact, I'm taking some college classes as well, and it helps a lot to do my own homework and study.

Although, some schools do start wayyy too early. My school starts at 7:15a and ends at 2:00p. Lunch is around 10:30am for some kids, and I believe that's far too early to call it a "lunch". It should be pushed down an hour.

ask moderation about reading serious moderation candidates TGs without telling them about it until afterwards and/or apparently refusing to confirm/deny the exact timeline of TG reading ~~~ i hope you never sent any of the recent mods or the ones that got really close anything personal!

signature edit: confirmation has been received. they will explicitly do it before and without asking. they can look at TGs basically whenever they want so please keep this in mind when nominating people for moderator or TGing good posters/anyone!

My Highschool went from 7:45am/7:55am to 2:45pm. The middle school started ten minutes earlier than that.

I did know a lot of people, though, who had to get up around 6:00am for a bus or to make it to school on time. Since I was less than a block away, my wakeup time was 7:30 sharp every morning.

Only memory I have from High School and handling idiocy - is taking so many tests for the end year Exams. To the point we skipped over most sections - much of the entire class failed the exams, and we were given two hours of mathematics to improve our grades. Then we knew less by the next year, and even more failed the exams. Yup. Though - this wasn't the US school [Ireland] :P

You also have to remember that school in Japan, while having less homework, also has much higher standards on standardized testing and has a sort of "cut the bottom" style with the upper grades.

The big reason the US is lacking in a lot of the comparable tests is because in America, everyone takes the tests, while in countries like Japan, only the top students take the test.

tl;dr: Common Core sucks.

Edit: Common Core and "no child left behind." Since the sentiment has become more "all children get held back by a weak link."

I would prefer it if schools weren't based on Crappy models of industrialism and allowed us to customize virtually everything about how we learn and what our schedule is.

Well, I wouldn't say perfect. It was decent as a younger child, but in my mid to late teens it was still a tad early. I believe there's quite a bit of research supporting the idea of starting and ending school even later for teenagers.

Schools in South Korea don't give homework either, and students from there perform very highly. Then again, most students attend hagwons after normal school hours end, so eh

My school starts at 7:45 everyday except Wednesday and ends at 3:15 always. On Wednesdays school starts at 8:45, with each of the 9 class periods cut down by about 10 minutes from the normal 45-minute length. In addition, some students start at 7:25/8:25 if they have something called "Flap". You see, our science classes are 90 minutes long instead of 45, so a period and a half. Some of these classes have the 45-minute section during 1st period, so the extra 20 minutes or so are squeezed in before when school starts for the rest.

As for the homework thing, I feel like it could use a little bit of cutting down, but not complete elimination. From personal observation, completing the homework helps immensely come test time because, as the old adage goes, practice makes perfect. Doing homework can help students retain the concepts the homework covers. Homework can also serve as an accurate depiction of a student's understanding of a concept prior to test time.
