State Council ruling confirms Turkish President Erdoğan’s palace as illegal
Turkey’s State Council anonymously vetoes a previous ruling which lifted major restrictions on opening natural preserved sites for construction of public buildings, in a move which shows President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s billion-lira Presidential Palace Ak Saray as illegal.
The 2014 alteration of the law had greenlit the construction of the multi-billion-lira 1,000-room presidential palace, which was built on the grounds an area of 300,000 square meters within the Atatürk Forest Farm (AOÇ), a protected zone established by Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The Ak Saray had been inaugurated October 29, 2014 by President Erdoğan.
The unions and other organizations who opposed the construction of the palace note that on February 10, 2014, the Ankara 5th Administrative Court ordered the suspension of all construction of the palace, due to the fact that the AOÇ was designated as a first-degree environmentally protected site.
Previously, the Ankara Chamber of Architects had inquired over the legality of the land permit, but the permit had been declared a “state secret."
The palace had initially been planned for the use of the prime ministry, but upon his August 2014 election as President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that the complex would instead serve as the new Presidential Palace.
The Presidential palace has been the epicenter of controversy over the state’s financial waste. The Chamber of Architects had vowed to keep disclosing facts and figures on the palace. The total cost of the palace is believed to have been around TRY 5 billion, and monthly electric bills are estimated to be as high as TRY 1 million.
