I was going through NSG and I saw that the NationStates Transgender Thread was locked. Why?

EDIT: Scratch that, it's gone completely. What the hell?

I locked it so I could remove the extended chit-chat threadjack you and Jormengand were indulging in. And for that, you are both *** warned. ***

I'd like to appeal this.

Those who cannot do their job properly need to shape up or ship out.

While I'm not sure the exact choice of wording is the best, but I agree with the sentiment - the whole point of the thread is, and I quote:

I don't think that you can with any seriousness call a greeting that goes beyond two posts in a support thread "Off-topic." We're supporting each other, it's a support thread, how much more on-topic can you get? There's not always some new, exciting trans-themed bit of news to talk about, and therefore we don't always have anything more on-topic to talk about than each other, and supporting each other. Given that pretty much everyone who uses the thread objects, could you please consider revising this decision?

Thanks,

There were 15 of them, with so many hug and kiss smilies that I had to edit them out to get this to post. However, I'll get you a second opinion.

I count in there two separate greetings, one conversation about how attractive we think other trans people are (which, guess what, is kinda an important trans issue) and one post that neither of us even made.

That's about as valid as saying, "So, you think it'll rain?" is a conversation about climate change.

Looks to me like a bunch of chat. Appeal denied.

Well, no. Talking about the attractiveness of a trans person is talking about the attractiveness of a trans person and kinda implies talking about passing, and reassurance that they do; talking about the weather is not, as you rightly say, a conversation about climate change and does not at any point imply it.

To clarify, if we can't support each other in a support thread, what can we do? If we can't talk about the issues that a specific trans person is facing with passing and self-confidence in a trans thread, what can we talk about? When the entire user base of the thread is against your ruling, what's the purpose of it?

I'm starting to feel like Max Barry in his incident with the UN, thinking "I probably assumed that even if the UN noticed, they’d have plenty of blood-thirsty dictators and international war crimes to prosecute before me. But what with Saddam behind bars and all that world peace you’ve been hearing so much about, I guess they worked their way down to me. " Doesn't the moderation team have bigger things to do than mess around going "Mrrh, we have power and we're going to use it to annoy people who are talking about arguably semi-tangental things to the detriment of absolutely nobody," such as actually using your mod abilities to, I dunno, make the NS experience better for everyone instead of worse?

The purpose of moderation is to help foster a safe and enriching community for the player base. The trans thread is one of the best examples of that. This is because people have formed friendships and engage in practices of mutual self-help. People will feel less able to offer such support now that you have completely unnecessarily waded in warning people because of your own misconceptions of what is "relevant", coloured by your collective privilege and the lack of any experience of transgender life and issues in your entire moderation team. Damage has already been done, please do not repeat the error.

In my opinion, not only is this ruling incorrect, but the mods in question have wilfully created a hostile environment and should be disciplined. As others have said, the purpose of the thread is to allow people to support each other and discuss relevant issues. People have pointed out the relevance, yet the moderators insist they are correct and even respond with mocking language about how irrelevant the posts supposedly are. This creates a hostile environment to the transgender community and their allies. I know I'm not allowed to do a third-party appeal, but I do wish to submit this for review of moderator abuse for creating a hostile environment to certain individuals, which I believe I am entitled to do even if I am not a direct victim.

I hate to tell the mods how to do their job. That being said, the ruling is unfair because chit-chatting is one of the purposes of the locked thread. Support means talking and greeting each other. Even on unrelated topics.

The warnings have been rescinded and the posts returned to the thread. It was not my intention to spoil anyone's experience here but simply to act on a report as I would on any other report, in good faith where I thought the rules had been pushed a little too far.

Farn's actions were not with malicious intent. No, this wasn't moderator abuse whatsoever.

Posts like this do nothing but aggravate the situation. It implies that Farn deliberately went out of her way to make the participants of the thread feel uncomfortable. Let's not throw accusations around for situations like this.

I don't mind the conversations in the thread - it's what it is there for. It is a discussion thread - directed for that side of the LBGT community.

However -

this could've been easily summed up into two or three posts. Emoting is alright, in moderation - but it was, indeed, very spammy. The warnings have been repealed, so not much else to do about that - but I'd appreciate it, if this doesn't happen again - stay on a Trans* related topic, talking about attractiveness is fine - it's related but in the future, limit emote post like that as it does clutter the thread up some. Thank you.
