Okay, so I've just put on a new pair of socks. I really don't like them. And do you know why? They're those really short socks that you have when you want to wear socks while wearing short trousers. It's supposed to make the sock 'less visible'. By now, you can probably guess that I don't like short socks. I prefer long socks - the security and warmth factor that you get from them is far superior to the "goin' solo" feeling you get from shorter socks.
But I know of a lot of people who prefer short socks. They don't like the clammy feeling you get from long socks. My mother is one of these people. When I was younger, and was wearing short trousers and long socks, she would tell me to change them. I could understand her point - it was a warm day, I was likely to feel hot later on... It's there. But then again, when you wear short socks, especially with trainers or running shoes, they often slip off the heel in my experience, or you get annoying blisters from the back of the shoe. So, I was wearing long socks.
I know a few people are quite vocal in their opinions of socks. Rob Brydon, for instance, is a reasonably famous Welsh comedian, and he has fiercely defended long socks, even in the face of being insulted by Jo Brand on the topic when it was mentioned on the popular television show QI. Brydon has defended the long sock for its "...feeling of security." Jo Brand then countered, saying, "But they do make you look like a knob-head." (You can see the entire discussion here.)
So, NSG - what do you think about this heated debate that even made it to international television? Do you agree that long socks are superior in every way, or will they be relegated to the corner of shame as the short sock takes preference?
