Pursuit of Shadows (Detective/Monster Hunter RP; OOC; WIP)

Postby Rudaslavia » Sat May 16, 2015 9:58 pm

I swear by God this humble vow,
That evil I shall disallow;
To safeguard mankind's preservation,
And shun all private inclination;
To banish the Devil to his fiery gallows,
And devote myself to the pursuit of shadows.

Oath to the Order of Argentum

A RUDASLAVIA ORIGINAL ROLEPLAY

History

Evil has infested the world since the Serpent's temptation of humanity. Incomprehensible darkness has corrupted the purity of mortal existence. Over the course of history, this darkness has assumed multiple manifestations; monsters of the most twisted nature, infecting mankind with the rotten cancer of wickedness.

For ages, the existence of these creatures was denied -- dismissed as folkloric myth! The institutions of civilization medicated the people's fears with faith in benevolent deities. Perhaps this was for the best. The panic-stricken terror of "superstitious" men and women subsided with the growth of modern theocracy. But there were those who maintained the recognition of truth. These few independent warriors, strong in both worship and battle, engaged the monstrosities in a secretive war that lasted throughout the progressing centuries.

But it wasn't enough. In their superior strength and overwhelming numbers, the devils shattered the ranks of their hunters. Lacking in organized unity and suffering the weight of their task, most who dared to pursue the monsters fell. A bloodbath ensued, allowing the wicked beings to thrive in the shadows and feed off humanity's ignorance like parasites.

Until the rise of the Industrial Revolution.

Armed with the conventions of latter-day weaponry, the tide of the war shifted in favor of the hunters. One by one, the festering nests of darkness were eradicated. One by one, the creatures fell to the bullets and blades of their relentless pursuers. But the hunters lacked a principle key to success -- unity.

Noting this substantial weakness, two British aristocrats rose to prominence: Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet. With covert financial backing from Parliament, they founded the Order of Argentum in 1836. A belligerent organization of utmost secrecy, the Argentum Order was composed of militant investigators. Devout in their faith and well-trained in the art of hunting, the Argentum detectives dedicated their lives to the global pursuit and annihilation of the monsters. Though once an exclusively British institution, the Order rapidly gained momentum throughout Europe by 1850.

By 1880, the Argentum Order had established strongholds in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Colonial dispatches in Africa also became vital to the operation. Strengthened by their efficient unity, the Order's hunters decimated the numbers of their prey worldwide. Suddenly, the dream of a complete human victory became an achievable reality.

It is now 1898, the closing of a century. In an effort to solidify its total defeat of the monsters, the Order's high command has established the elite Indagator Agency (I.A.) -- the best of the best Argentum hunters. The I.A. has been assigned one simple mission: to obliterate what remains of the Devil's grasp on humanity.

You, a dedicated member of the Order, have just been made an Indagator Agent. Will you finally destroy the putrid creatures once and for all...or fail in your endeavors?

The Order of Argentum

Founded by Arthur Wellesley and Sir Robert Peel in 1836, the Order of Argentum (or Argentum Order) is a secretive conglomerate of trained detective-hunters. Though established with British Parliamentary finances, the Order is not a branch of the British government. Instead, it is a private organization without allegiance to any one nation. Its sole aim is to eradicate the influence of the Devil's earthly minions, an effort which has proven largely successful.

The Argentum Order has a rigid, yet simplistic, hierarchy. At the bottom of the totem pole lies the informants. Informants are technically not official members of the Order, but rather trusted associates of the organization that probe society for clues regarding malicious supernatural activity. Through an intricate network of communications, informants pass their findings on to the Huntsmen. Huntsmen are the Order's sanctioned foot soldiers. Most are college educated, well-trained detectives that investigate the informants' claims. Upon concluding their investigations, they submit their discovered evidence to review by the Council of Ministers. The Ministers, who hold the highest positions of authority in the Order, either approve or reject the Huntsmen's proof. If the proof is deemed valid, the Ministers usually order the execution of the accused "paranormal criminal(s)." The execution is then carried out by the Huntsmen who had initially gathered the evidence.

While all Huntsmen are permitted to collaborate and associate with one another as they please, none are permitted to know the identities of the Ministers. This sustains the overall security of the Order, as the faces of the high command are unknown to lower-ranking members.

The Order is based out of London, England. It is currently comprised of about 2,000 members, not including informants. The Council of Ministers seats 25 officials that vote on the validity of presented case evidence. As the institution was initially founded in Britain, the majority of Huntsmen are citizens of the British Empire (roughly 60%, in fact). Another 30% hail from various Western nations in Europe and North America. The remaining 10% includes members from widely differing nationalities, ranging from African colonials to residents of Eastern Asia. The lack of racial restrictions makes it possible for affiliates of any ethnicity to be inducted.

All Order members are required to have a college education (at least a bachelor's degree in any field) and five years of training in both investigation and combat. As a result of these high standards, most Huntsmen can identify as being part of either the middle or upper classes. However, there is no official class restriction. Provided that he/she meets the educational requirements, a lowerclassman can receive Order training and membership.

In accordance with the Argentum Doctrine of Gender Equality (1869), women are permitted to be inducted into the Order. However, because educated women are so few in number, there are only a handful of female Huntsmen.

The Indagator Agency

The Indagator Agency was just founded by the Council of Ministers in 1898. It is a team of elite Huntsmen dedicated to destroying the Devil's monsters once and for all. Indagator Agents are unique in that they do not require Council approval to act on their investigations. If they believe a suspect guilty of paranormal crimes, they may react as they see fit. This power comes with great responsibility; for if one is falsely accused of paranormal crimes and executed, the mistaken Agent will be expelled from the Order and likely sentenced to death/life imprisonment.

Indagator Agents are the Order's very best and most qualified Huntsmen. They are master detectives and hunters who have devoted their very souls to the total destruction of their prey. To be a part of the Indagator Agency is amongst the greatest honors an Order member can receive.

You have just been made an Indagator Agent. Use your new title and authority wisely, else be destroyed yourself.

Weaponry/Technology

So I'm sure a lot of you sci-fi fans have a Steampunk boner after reading the information above. However, I'm afraid these next words will greatly disappoint you: this is NOT a Steampunk RP. I like Steampunk, so long as it's part of a videogame. As far as RP's go, I am selective about which Steampunk storylines I follow. Thus, this RP will be focused on real-life weaponry and technology that actually existed during the late Victorian/early Edwardian period in 1898.

As the Order is dedicated to hunting the most dangerous of supernatural entities, silver is crucial to a Huntsman's arsenal. Bullets and blades of silver are common to the inventories of Order members. And, since most of their prey consists of Devil-associated creatures, holy relics are equally essential tools of veteran hunters.

Keep these facts in mind as you fill out your apps.

The Roleplay Itself

This RP is not just about slaying vampires, werewolves, and other hideous abominations. Yes, it'll be a massive component of it. But it will also involve extensive detective work. Indagator Agents are not just monster hunters; they're also professional investigators. It takes serious examination and analysis to root out a vampire nest or occultist den. And, because the existence of these supernatural entities is rejected by public society, you will have to rely heavily on the information provided by trusted Order informants.

Teamwork and cooperation is necessary. If you're one for Rambo/solo kickassery play, this RP is not for you. Your prey is beyond powerful. Their strength gave them an advantage over humanity for centuries. They aren't stupid paper soldiers as portrayed in the movies. Every monster is a formidable opponent. Tread carefully, and you will be successful on your hunts. Play the hero, and you will die almost immediately.

There will be a set storyline to follow, but you are free to act as you wish. But be aware that every action has its consequences. Think before you move.

The RP will start off in London after the first case has been chosen.

Rules

1. I am the supreme entity of authority in this RP.

2. While I have no yet assigned co-OP's, they are my representatives in my absence. Thus, they should be treated with equal respect, and are answerable only to me or higher NS authorities.

3. We're all (mostly) mature here. Respect one another in the OOC. But feel free to exchange words/fists in the IC if desired.

4. Like many RP's, this roleplay is about good storytelling -- not competition. Your characters can die, and some probably will. The point isn't to win. It's to tell one hell of a tale.

5. Romances are permitted, but no extremes in the IC please. Take that to private threads in TG's.

6. All other standard RP rules apply. Y'all know the drill. :)

Index of Creatures

Here, information on each species of creatures you discover throughout the course of the RP will be listed.

Vampires

Physical Appearance: IMAGE
Known Strengths:
    -Retractable fangs
    -Retractable claws
    -Powerful, extendable jaws
    -Superhuman strength
    -Superhuman speed
    -Night vision
    -Invulnerability to non-silver weapons
    -Enhanced physical senses
    -Immortality
-Ability to blend into human society
-Ability to infect humans with disease by biting, thereby creating new vampires
Known Weaknesses:
-Combustion upon exposure to direct sunlight
    -Vulnerability to silver
-Vulnerability to Christian relics (such as crucifixes, holy water, blessed wafers, etc.)
    -Vulnerability to fire
-Susceptibility to penetration of the heart by stakes
-Uncontrollable hunger for human blood and flesh
Additional Information: Vampires are amongst the oldest of supernatural entities. Their existence was first documented in 3rd century Rome, and they have since spread their vile disease worldwide. Vampires often live in groups, usually hiding in secretive "nests" from which they prey upon humanity at nightfall. It is rumored that vampirekind as a whole is united under one "King of Vampires," but this has yet to be proven. As a traditional enemy of the Order, total extermination of the vampiric species is a huge priority.

Lycans

Physical Appearance: IMAGE
Known Strengths:
-Ability to assume bestial form at will
    -Superhuman strength
    -Superhuman speed
    -Invulnerability to non-silver weapons
    -Enhanced physical senses
-Ability to blend into human society
-Ability to infect humans with disease by biting, thereby creating new lycans
Known Weaknesses:
    -Vulnerability to silver
    -Detectable by animal species
Additional Information: Lycans, also known as "werewolves," are a powerful wolf-like species that first appeared in pre-colonial North America. Upon the transatlantic exploration, the disease quickly spread eastward to Europe and eventually became as pandemic as the vampiric plague. Lycans are extremely powerful adversaries. Though folklore holds that they can only transform during the night of the full moon, they are actually capable of transforming at any given time -- be it day or night. Unlike vampires, lycans usually do not live in groups. Instead, they live in isolation and prey on unwary settlements secluded in the countryside.

Demons

Physical Appearance: Unknown
Known Strengths: Unknown/unpredictable
Known Weaknesses:
-Susceptible to the rites of exorcism
-Detest holy relics of any form
Additional Information: Demons are the eldest of the Order's enemies, and also the most dangerous. They are the source of all evil that exists in the world. Demonic attacks are as lethal as they are rare. Unlike other species of monsters, demons do not manifest themselves in physical form. They possess the bodies and essences of human beings. Little is known about them, but most Western scholars theorize that they were once Lucifer's angelic followers in the War of Heaven. When Lucifer was defeated at the hands of Michael the Archangel, they were cast to the domains of Hell along with him. Since then, they have vowed to destroy God's most precious creation: humanity. Demons are usually invited by complex occultist ceremonies. They're difficult to suppress and impossible to control.

Current Available Cases

Here, you may view the list of cases available to take. Sometimes, solving one case will open up several more. Upon completion of each case, a poll will be opened to choose which to take next.

As influenced from Cylarn's Use of Force, each case will either be marked Pending, In Progress, or Complete.

The Madhouse

Order informants at the Betteridge Insane Asylum in Northumberland have apprehended a vampire. They believe the monster to have knowledge of key information regarding a local vampire nest. The validity of these claims is up to the Indagators to confirm or deny, as they have been allocated to explore this unique case.

Gypsies, Tramps, and Fiends

A series of mysterious disappearances has followed the travels of a gypsy family in the County of Southampton. The Romanichal clan, known as the Kimberfields, are deduced to be guilty of paranormal crimes by a local Order informant. They were last spotted in the village of Blacknest near the Alice Holt Forest. The Indagators have been tasked with finding and probing the Kimberfields for evidence of supernatural activity.

Strikebreakers

The United London Company, a joint-stock shipping enterprise based out of the UK, has recently been confronted with a string of violent strikes in the Thames Estuary. Lord Brigham Culver, an Order informant and the company's presiding chairman, suspects paranormal influence behind the protests. The Indagator Agency has been assigned to investigate and quell the situation by any means necessary.

Name: Vernon Baxter (Full name: Vernon Sinclair Horace Baxter, often goes by V.S. Horace Baxter)

Age: 57

Date of Birth: 15 December, 1840

Gender: Male

Appearance: Baxter

Voice: Thompson in The Adjustment Bureau

Personality: Vernon Baxter is a complicated and deeply conflicted man. His backwards upbringing, a twisted integration of love and abuse, has inflicted acute cases of sociopathy and narcissistic personality disorder upon him. In spite of these complexities, Vernon has learned to accept humiliation in stride. He believes that men must undergo personal struggle to build up true character. As a result, he's grown into a kind and courteous individual -- characteristic of a candid English gentleman.

Though once a short-tempered brute of selfish intent, he has learned to ease his violent urges by way of meditation and charity. Religiously, Baxter is a pious Roman Catholic. He holds that God is a part of all things and that the Order's war with the monsters is an ultimate test of faith.

But, notwithstanding these virtues, Vernon has noticeable racist tendencies. As a staunch imperialist, he views the Anglo-Saxon race as superior to most (if not all) others in terms of cultural and civilizational evolution. He scorns the Afghans in particular, by whom he endured unspeakable atrocities during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Still, he makes his best effort towards judging each individual by their character and not by their ethnic background; he had served alongside many brave minority soldiers in both the Order and the British military.

Vernon is somewhat famous for his humorlessness. He's often seen as a stereotypical intellectual whose obsession with knowledge has clouded his ability to feel joy. This is true, for the most part. The only person that is known to make him laugh is his daughter, whom he "loves with a passion greater than the force of the ocean waves." He dotes on Marie Amelia, even in her fully grown state. The young woman is now of marital age, much to the displeasure of her father. Vernon does his very best to protect her from his career as an Order member. While his wife is slightly aware (and worrisome) of the his Huntsman status, Marie Amelia has no idea. Vernon believes this is the safest measure to take, as she will never become engulfed in a conflict she does not know exists.

Regardless of his hatred towards his childhood, Vernon does possess the ruthless qualities of his Baxter bloodline. Like his predecessors, he sees brute force as the only solution to worldly problems. He is not above slaying a thousand innocents to eliminate one target. This policy has brought him great success in the Order, but has brought additional amounts of disdain to the family name.

He is popular nonetheless, and considered one of the most honored members of the Argentum Order. Over the course of his career as both a Huntsman and a soldier, he has respected his subordinates and led with intelligence and strength that can be matched by no other. He is the perfect commander of the Indagator Agency.

Skills: Baxter's most prominent skills lie with medical care. He was educated in orthopedic surgical practice at the University of Oxford and spent several years as a field surgeon in the armed forces. And, as a distinguished Royal Army veteran, he's honed the fundamental talents of both ranged and melee combat.

In addition to his physical abilities, Vernon has a knack for leadership. He is a cunning strategist whose skills evolved over the course of his military and political service.

Weaknesses: Vernon was critically injured during the campaigns of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. His leg was splintered by shrapnel while leading a cavalry charge, causing him to fall from his horse and break his collar bone. He spent the next few months in a prison camp and was given little treatment for his wounds, rendering some of the effects permanent. He now walks with a severe limp, requiring the assistance of a cane to move at an efficient pace.

And, having served on two violent warfronts, he experiences extreme bouts of post traumatic stress disorder. At one point, it even caused a seizure that nearly claimed his life. These bouts are often triggered at random, usually by spontaneous noises or certain actions resembling distressful circumstances of the past.

Time has also taken its toll on the Huntsman's capabilities. At 57 years of age, he has been slowed since first joining the Order over two decades ago. The youthful strength and enthusiasm he once flaunted has since faded. He is now more vulnerable to the power and agility of the beasts he hunts.

Lastly is his love for his wife and daughter. He is devoted wholeheartedly to the Argentum Order. But if forced to choose between his oath and his family, he would choose the latter without hesitation. This is why he has tried to separate his two lives entirely, but his attempts at doing so are not always effective. In the end, they could very well spell out his downfall.

Birthplace: Bangalore, British India (then under the Company Raj)

Nationality: British

Ethnicity: Anglo-Irish

Sexuality: Heterosexual

Place of Education: Achieved an M.D. in orthopedic surgery from the University of Oxford, as well as a Ph.D. in psychiatry.

Religion: Roman Catholic

Motivations: Above all, Baxter has an aggressive desire to create a devil-free world for his daughter to live in. He believes that the monsters are the source of earthly suffering. Thus, if they are completely eradicated, world peace and harmony can be achieved.

Weapons/Equipment: Silver crucifix, holy water (contained in a Russian Orthodox vial), garnet rosary, Colt Model 1898 revolver, silver cavalry sword (gifted from Huntsman Charles Williamson, only carried on hunts), walking stick w/ concealed dagger attachment

Family:
-Charlotte Elizabeth Baxter (née Fitzharris), wife, aged 43
-Marie Amelia Claudia Baxter, daughter, aged 21

Background: Vernon is a direct descendant of Major-General Arthur Baxter, one of the most controversial military figures of the 18th century. Major-General Baxter was an Irish-born officer of the British Army. The son of a low-ranking aristocrat in Belfast, he rose to prominence upon the outbreak of the American Revolution. Baxter headed His Majesty's Blue Rangers, a voluntary regiment of Loyalist participants and Native American scouts. As the war progressed, the Blue Rangers gained a reputation amongst the Continentals as "savage mercenaries," symbolic of Britain's "tyranny" over the colonists.

But Baxter's truest moment of fame arrived in the fall of 1778 -- an event that would come to be called the "Pennsylvanian Massacre." On the banks of the Delaware, an encampment of approximately 138 rebel militiamen was uncovered by Blue Ranger scouts. A gruesome firefight ensued between the two parties. After the skirmish settled, all of the 138 militiamen laid dead in the muck. The massacre was heavily publicized in both the colonies and the British Isles themselves. American sympathizers insisted that the rebels had surrendered...but were slaughtered by Baxter's men regardless. The Loyalists, on the other hand, maintained that the militiamen had not surrendered at all. Instead, the Rangers were only acting in self defense.

No matter the truth, Major-General Baxter was henceforth called "Bloody Baxter." Though celebrated as a war hero in London, he was despised by all that stood for an independent America. Upon the conclusion of the war, Baxter returned to England with his family. Several years later, he was dispatched to India to lead expeditionary forces on the borders of Mysore. During the 4th Anglo-Mysore War, Arthur was involved in yet another massacre. As commander of the 20th Light Dragoons in 1799, Baxter ambushed a detachment of 600 Mysorean warriors outside the city of Srirangapatna. Only 16 of Tipu Sultan's men survived the attack, and 8 of those men died of infectious wounds. The event was condemned by figures on both sides of the war. However, it allowed British forces under General George Harris to finally carry out the Siege of Seringapatam (which ended the conflict itself).

After retiring from the Army, Arthur Baxter became a representative of the East India Company. He continued to utilize ruthless tactics against his enemies, bolstering Company authority over the Indian provinces. This employment of brute force was passed down to future generations of Baxters, who emulated Arthur's strength and aggressiveness.

One of these descendants, Edmund Baxter, inherited the fortunes of his forefathers in 1831. By this time, the Baxters were amongst the most influential families in colonial India. But, as predominantly Irish Catholics in a staunchly Anglican faction, they were somewhat ostracized from the social affairs of the Company's ruling class. Edmund, a young and ambitious man of charm, sought to break into these privileged rings of the elite. He began a string of correspondences with Lady Marie Amelia Kingsley, a Birmingham socialite renowned for her beauty and elegance. As the only legitimate child of Lord Reginald Kingsley, an affluent politician, Marie Amelia was the sole heiress to her family's wealth and titles. And, as a pure-blood Anglican, she personified the concept of a "superior" English aristocrat. Edmund and Marie Amelia were married by Catholic rite in 1837, forwarding the legitimacy of Baxter authority.

After becoming wed, Edmund returned to India with his wife to assume local jurisdiction in the Raj. Between 1837 and 1839, he viciously tripled the production of opium for exportation. The revenue gained from his efforts strengthened Company presence in the eastern colonies, but ignited turmoil within the Orient itself. Upon the outbreak of the First Opium War, Edmund enlisted in Her Majesty's service and took command of the 19th Royal Irish Regiment of Foot. Like "Bloody Baxter" before him, he rapidly gained notoriety for his savagery in battle. It is said that he ordered the bloody executions of 35 Chinese civilians for "suspected espionage."

In late 1840, while Edmund was still at the frontlines in China, Marie Amelia gave birth to the couple's only son. The infant boy was christened Vernon Sinclair Horace Baxter. His mother passed seventeen hours after labor. Edmund didn't receive the news until the New Year. After hearing word of his wife's death, he was reported to have entered a fit of destructive rage that lasted an entire night.

Vernon spent the first years of his life on the Baxter family estate in Bangalore. He did not meet his father until the end of the Opium War in 1842; he was 1 and a half years old. The child's upbringing was...extreme, to say the least. He was raised to glorify his family's military history, taught from day one to use brute force as the only means of solution to any problem. Though genuinely loved by Edmund, young Vernon was severely beaten for exhibiting any signs of "weakness." When a litter of infant rabbits was discovered on the property, Vernon was ordered to kill each of them with a hatchet. When he refused, Edmund thrashed him so violently that the child urinated blood for a weak. When an Indian servant dropped a platter of food in the dining hall, Vernon was ordered to flog her with a whip. Again, he refused, and was clobbered by his father until two of his ribs were broken.

As the years progressed, this continued mental and physical abuse began to take its toll on the boy's sanity. His moral compass slipped into chaos, confused by the conflicting principles of his Catholic faith and family legacy. This confusion was further complicated by an incident in 1854, when he was only 13 years old. While riding through the streets of Bangalore, his horse stumbled on a patch of mud and broke its leg. In what he believed to be a "strong" response, Vernon furiously beat the wounded animal to death with a club. Edmund was enraged upon hearing of the event. As punishment for his "foolish barbarism," the child was pummeled so fiercely that he was hospitalized for seven months due to his injuries. Vernon now recounts the event by saying, "If I hadn't killed the horse, I would have been struck anyway."

By the age of 15, Vernon was already exhibiting heavy signs of sociopathy and narcissistic personality disorder. Indeed, he epitomized the supposed "strength" his father so desired -- cold, cunning, brutal, and without remorse. Edmund had raised what he perceived to be the perfect Baxter. But in the process, the boy completely lost his faith. Rejecting the notion of a merciful and loving God, Vernon indulged himself in the study of the sciences. At age 16, he left his father's supervision to study medicine at the University of Oxford. His professors immediately noted his "keen interest" in lecture material and "prodigal talent" in the practice of surgery.

That same year, rebellion broke out in India. Though he desired to join the fight against the mutiny, Vernon opted to continue his studies instead. His choice was met with disdain from his father, who valued one's service to his country over any scholarly achievement. When the revolt was suppressed in 1858, the Crown dissolved EIC authority and assumed direct control over India's governance. As Company chairmen, the Baxters were rendered destitute by the loss. Edmund left Bangalore for Belfast in shame, purchasing a rundown manor house on the countryside. There, he secluded himself from public affairs and developed a severe case of tuberculosis.

Without his father's financial support, Vernon relied on Kingsley family loans to complete his education. Aged 23, he graduated from Oxford at the top of his class with an M.D. in orthopedic surgery. The young doctor then moved into his father's manor where he treated Edmund's illness throughout the next several months. However, despite Vernon's best efforts, his father could not be saved. Edmund passed in May of 1864. His last words to Vernon were: "Be strong. Be a Baxter." To this day, Vernon feels no sorrow over Edmund's passing. He describes the event as "the demise of a tyrant; albeit a tyrant who loved me, but a tyrant nonetheless."

Following his father's death, Vernon returned to India where he briefly operated as a physician. Upon the outbreak of the Duar War, he enlisted in the Queen's 2nd Regiment of Foot as a field surgeon. His days of service in Bhutan would change his life forever. At the Battle of Dewangiri, he was presented with a wounded soldier that was on the brink of death. The serviceman, a Welsh Staff Sergeant by the name of Charles Williamson, had been savagely bitten on the right forearm by what was thought to be an animal. Through extremely strenuous efforts, Vernon was able to safely amputate the man's arm. As Williamson recovered over the progressing weeks, he confided in Vernon and revealed that he was secretly an Order Huntsman. The Staff Sergeant had been pursuing a Bhutanese vampire called Rangupati, who was working under the employ of the penlops with his thralls. When Williamson confronted the monster at Dewangiri, it narrowly escaped after biting his forearm. In amputating his limb, Vernon had in fact rescued the man from succumbing to vampirism.

As the war carried on, Vernon proceeded to assist the Huntsman in tracking Rangupati down. In early 1865, they swarmed the creature's nest on the borders of Assam. In the ensuing clash, Vernon personally decapitated the vampire with Williamson's silver cavalry sword. Now lacking Rangupati's aid, the Bhutanese quickly fell to the invading British Army. The war officially ended that November with the Treaty of Sinchula.

After returning from the front, Vernon entered politics in British India. He was inaugurated as a regional official of the Bombay Province. Using his newfound governmental connections, Baxter became a valuable informant of the Order's Indian branch. He worked closely with local Huntsmen to root out the pestilent evils of the Raj. During his eleven-year tenure as an Order informant, Vernon exposed four vampire nests in Bombay and assisted in the hunt for the "Bhiwandi Wolf" -- a murderous lycan that had fled to India from Japan following the Meiji Restoration.

For his long decade of informant service and his part in slaying the werewolf, Vernon was officially made a Huntsman in 1876. As a Huntsman, Baxter finally felt a sense of purpose in his life. He reconciled with his Roman Catholic faith and began using local Buddhist techniques to control the violent tendencies he'd adopted in his youth. His political career was also advanced after being appointed provincial governor of Ajmer-Merwara in 1877.

At some point between 1874-1876, Vernon came in contact with Lady Charlotte Fitzharris -- the glamorous daughter of Colonel Francis Jordan Fitzharris, Governor of Bengal. The Fitzharris clan, a traditionally Catholic family of Breton descent, welcomed Baxter's friendship with open arms. Vernon became progressively closer to Charlotte. And, in lending political support to Colonel Fitzharris's campaign, they were permitted to be married in early 1877. In October of the same year, Charlotte gave birth to the couple's beloved daughter. The infant was christened Marie Amelia Claudia Baxter after Vernon's late mother.

Vernon generally disassociated his family life with his career as a Huntsman. After Marie Amelia was born, he took a temporary leave from his Order duties to tend to his wife and baby daughter. One night while holding the sleeping infant, he remarked to Charlotte, "How could I bear to strike this miracle of God? Was my father mad to justify beating his child? The love I feel for our little angel is beyond what words can describe. She will never feel the suffering I endured under the wrath of a 'Baxter upbringing.'"

When the Second Anglo-Afghan War erupted in 1878, Vernon renounced his station as Governor of Ajmer-Merwara to reenlist in the British Army. He was made a Captain of the 88th Regiment of Foot, where he again acted as a field surgeon. Charles Williamson, now commanding the 12th Royal Hussars in Afghanistan as a Brigadier, was advised of suspected paranormal activity in the highlands of Hazarajat. In response, Williamson deployed Captain Baxter to investigate. Vernon was accompanied by two fellow Huntsmen in the Royal Army: Lieutenant Bernard Ambridge and Second Lieutenant Vikesh Naagal. The trio slipped behind enemy lines and combed through the countryside in search of answers. Their hunt led them to the ruins of an ancient Achaemenid temple hidden deep in the shades of Foladi Peak. The temple, heavily guarded by a detachment of Afghan soldiers, was dedicated to the demon Humbaba -- an olden god of Babylon. The Afghans were excavating for an unknown artifact that was supposedly buried in the ruins. Upon being spotted, a fierce engagement transpired between the three Huntsmen and Ayub Khan's men. In the blazing hail of gunfire, Second Lieutenant Naagal was severely injured. Luckily, Huntsmen's superior combat training allowed for their slim victory over the Afghans.

Following the firefight, the trio pressed on further into the ruins. The Afghans' archeological labor had unearthed a valuable artifact; stored at the temple's pits was a well-preserved stone carving of Humbaba's features. They took the relic before departing for the safety of the British lines. The journey back, however, was to prove perilous. Swept up by a thick sandstorm in the deserts of Daykundi, the Huntsmen were forced to take refuge in an abandoned Afghan village for several nights. During this time, Naagal's wounds festered with infection, and Lieutenant Ambridge gradually began to exhibit an obsession with the temple carving. When they resumed travel, Ambridge's behavior grew progressively more bizarre. Vernon awoke one night to find the Lieutenant standing over him naked. Ambridge was holding the carving tightly in his arms and whispering incoherent blurbs of sexual obscenities. The next night, he witnessed the Lieutenant eating his own feces and shouting curses in fluent Latin whilst dancing on top of the artifact. The Captain, torn between restraining the madness-induced Ambridge and caring to the sickly Naagal, was becoming overwhelmed. The chaos eventually culminated six days after leaving the temple. Upon awaking, Baxter discovered that the Lieutenant had carved Naagal's heart out with a knife and was eating the man's corpse. When the Captain attempted to interfere, Ambridge proceeded to beat him in proclamation of "the Devil's princely grandeur." Vernon scarcely escaped by hitting his assailant over the head with a nearby stone, knocking the Lieutenant unconscious.

Baxter rushed the two men to the nearest settlement -- a small British garrison of 20 troops on the cusp of southeastern Bamyan. The Lieutenant's condition was growing rapidly worse. His obsession with the artifact became a crazed infatuation. He spoke in twisted tongues with the vocal effects of a monster. After two days, he began telekinetically moving objects and reading the minds of the stronghold's soldiers. There was no doubt that Ambridge had fallen victim to demonic possession. It was the rarest and most dangerous form of paranormal attack. Naagal's remains were transferred back to India while Baxter departed for high command in Kabul with Ambridge. There, he met with Williamson and appealed to the Council for permission to conduct an exorcism. One week later, authority to carry out the rite was granted.

The ceremony lasted eleven days and was compose of twenty-six sessions. On the twelfth morning, the demon was successfully expelled from Ambridge's body. It was amongst the most violent exorcisms in recorded history, costing the lives of two British soldiers and wounding four. Following the ceremony, the temple artifact was sent back to the Order's headquarters in London to be safely destroyed. Unfortunately, Ambridge died the next day of a serious blood infection he'd picked up in Daykundi. This made Baxter the only survivor of the Order expedition to Hazarajat. The event gained Vernon worldwide renown. Huntsmen from the Americas to Asia heard tales of his name -- the man who defeated a demon. To reward his service, Williamson had Baxter promoted to Major and placed him in command of the 6th Delhi Light Cavalry.

The battalion's brigade saw action at the Battle of Maiwand in 1880. The British artillery was heavily outnumbered by the Afghans, who overwhelmed Brigadier General Burrows' infantry lines. To allow the withdrawal of the Royal Horse Artillery Regiment, Major Baxter led the 6th Delhi in a brutal cavalry charge against Ayub Khan's forces. The maneuver, labelled the "Delhi Storm," has since been compared to the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava. Baxter's regiment was annihilated by the Afghan regulars, but the charge permitted the British artillery enough time to escape the battlefield. Vernon was hit in the right leg by a cluster of shrapnel, causing him to fall from his horse and shatter his collar bone. He and 36 fellow cavalrymen were taken prisoner by the Afghans, where they were subjected to torture of the most twisted kind. They were flogged daily and coerced to undergo near-drowning by having urine poured down their throats.

Baxter was amongst the only seven survivors (and given his injuries, it was a miracle that he was able to sustain himself). He and his men were rescued after two months of imprisonment. The Major was bed-ridden for the duration of the war. Army surgeons were able to save his leg, but the shrapnel had harshly damaged the structure of his tibia. Though his collar bone eventually healed to a full degree, Vernon would be condemned to walk with a heavy limp for the rest of his life.

For his bravery at Maiwand, Baxter was presented a Victoria Cross in 1881 (in addition to an Afghanistan Campaign Medal). He returned to his family in India as a celebrated hero of both the Argentum Order and the British Royal Army. Vernon described the Afghan War in his memoirs: "My service in Afghanistan was undoubtedly the most humbling experience of my life. It taught me the capacity of both evil and humanity. I had never felt so close to God; prayer was the remedy by which I survived through every passing hour. I forsook my arrogance in favour of life."

Between 1882 and 1885, Vernon worked as a medical practitioner at an Anglican clinic in Udaipur. There, he adopted the professional alias of Dr. V.S. Horace Baxter -- a name by which he is commonly addressed today. Aside from his surgical duties, Baxter continued to serve the Order diligently. He worked closely with fellow Huntsmen in the Rajputana Agency to pursue a local ring of vampires. While successful, the hunt nearly endangered Vernon's family on the Baxter estate. Thus, he opted to leave India with Charlotte and Marie Amelia for London.

In Britain, Vernon reestablished his political ambitions and became an official of the Parliamentary House of Lords. Amidst elective campaigns, he achieved a Ph.D. in psychiatry from his Alma Mater at the University of Oxford in 1892. The same year, Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone offered Baxter the chance to become Britain's ambassador to the Russian Empire. Vernon accepted and served as the United Kingdom's delegate in St. Petersburg for five years. However, in 1897, he was contacted by the Council of Ministers and informed of their intention to create the Indagator Agency. Baxter left his office as ambassador to devote full time to the Agency's planning and development. When the Indagator organization was founded in 1898, Vernon was made the institution's Lieutenant.

Now, as the spearhead of the Agency, Baxter is one of the most acclaimed Huntsmen in the Argentum Order. Under his leadership, the Indagators will surely win the final victory over evil.

...Or will they?

Name: Detective Alfred Kappel

Age: 25

Date of Birth: 1873, Sixth of April.

Gender: Male

Appearance: http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/ ... 5rltln.jpg

Voice: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yov1rHCOP6I

Personality: Alfred is a difficult person to deal with: extreme, impetuous, vengeful, psychopathic, unhinged, unpredictable, untamed, infamous, homicidal, and prone to violent outbursts. He conducts his investigations in a psychopathic and relentless manner. However, he is honest about it and will never show hypocrisy. He has his own charm along with his own principles.

Despite all his flaws and the way in which he handles his job, he gets results. This is the only reason the order keeps him around.

Skills: Alfred is a killer at heart. He demonstrates an excellent ability at swordsmanship and using firearms. Of course, there's also the fact that he has very ruthless yet keen detective skills.

Weaknesses: Alfred's mental instability. His craziness is his fatal flaw. It causes him to act rash, sometimes making misjudgements and getting himself and his team into sticky situations. Theirs also the fact that he's prone to violent outbursts and as a result, may lash out at his teammates if they "bother" him for long periods of time with insignificant information not related to the investiagtion. Indeed, he only cares about the investiagtion. He conducts it in a ruthless matter and is not above torture to get results, whether or not it actually works.

Birthplace: Berlin, German Empire.

Nationality: German

Ethnicity: Caucasian

Sexuality: Straight foward.

Place of Education: Humboldt University of Berlin, with a PHD in criminal justice (ironically.)

Religion: Athiest

Motivations: If anything, it's boredom. Alfred grew tired of hunting regular criminals and sooner or later joined the Order. He grew to take his new job very seriously.

Weapons/Equipment: Winchester rifle, colt revolver, and a dagger. All of which are silver.
Note that he only uses the rifle when he's going to a hideout.

Family: Dead.

Background: Alfred grew up in an environment of alcoholism and violence. Alfred's family moved to Londom when he was twelve, where he was later arrested in for passing forged checks. He and his family was deported from Britain due to “incidents of a similar nature". They moved back to Berlin.

After numerous run in's with the police, Alfred decided to clean up his act. He went to college and studied criminal minds, where he earned a PHD in criminal justice. Despite his unstableness, Alfred managed to make it through college without getting kicked out, something which he's highly proud of.

Alfred became a detective and was assigned to a series of gruesome and brutal murders. However, despite closing the cases and arresting suspects using brutal and ruthless tactics, Alfred began to see that all the murders were connected to each other and one cold case. After receiving anonymous letters taunting the Homicide Department, Alfred realized that the true killer - the Werewolf - was still at large.

Using the letters, Alfred followed clues leading them to several landmarks across the city. At each location, Alfred was able to solve puzzles and elude traps, as he was being set up and tested by the werewolf. The final clue led to a church, where he found the Werewolf, where he revealed himself to be "Heinrich Stark." Alfred chased after Stark through the church catacombs, finally killing Stark in a shootout.

All in all, his brilliant investigation attracted the attention of the order, who soon hired him. They regretted their choice only a little bit due to not expecting Alfred would be somewhat unstable. As said before, the reason they keep him around is because of his skills as a detective.

EDIT: While his investigation against the werewolf caught the eyes of the order, what really set him in was the fact that he had come into contact with a vampire. Alfred had been kidnapped by a vampire named Hugo Beck, who wanted to use Alfred as cattle for his blood sucking needs. Huge used mind manipulation powers on Alfred in an attempt to control him. It worked only temporarily, for Hugo did not realize Alfred was a man of strong will. In a freak accident, he escaped Hugo's mind manipulation and brutally killed the vampire. This was the final straw for the order. It was time to let Alfred in.

Note that due to his newfound membership his deportation was reversed.

Name: Ebenezer "Eb" Quantrill.

Age: 39.

Date of Birth: March 1st, 1859.

Gender: Male.

Appearance: Quantrill.

Voice: Calvin Candie.

Personality: Despite his newfound profession, Eb Quantrill has remained both a gentleman and a hedonist. His mannerisms are characteristic of the Southern elite in America, and he exhibits a very polite, yet inquisitive character when interacting with others. His clothing is usually clean and he keeps his appearance rather well-kept. Unlike his fellow detectives, he is very fond of alcohol, most notably bourbon, and he has been known to indulge diligently in the pleasures of the Orient (opium) and the flesh (prostitutes), enjoying these pleasures almost as much as he enjoys the acts of thespians. Like most men of the century, he is a bit racist towards people of color.

However, when he has been confronted with violence, his prejudices and desires go out the window, and his focus turns completely towards the task at hand. He has experienced great strife and violence throughout his life, and he is able to maintain his composure in the face of danger or mind-shattering fear.

Skills: Eb is a skilled shot, deadly with both pistols and long guns, stemming from his early days in the US Cavalry and his time as a lawman in the American West. He has also made extensive usage of knives, sabers, hatchets, axes, pick axes and other deadly tools. Hand-to-hand fighting is not as prevalent of a skill as his marksmanship, but close-quarters fights with outlaws, Indians, and drunks have shaped him into a fairly competent fistfighter.

Despite not having a college diploma like the other members of his order, he has demonstrated an ability to analyze crime scenes and profile criminals, in order to ascertain what he is up against. He learned his police work on the frontier as both a deputy US Marshal and as a Pinkerton detective, whether it be bringing down a gang's prostitution ring in his town or pursuing an anarchist criminal from Chicago to St. Alban's, or a kidnapped heiress from her mansion in Boston to the home of a demon sex cult in Eastern Europe.

He is also a strong drinker, capable of holding back considerable amounts of booze, unless absinthe is involved. He is also a rather talented gambler, at least in his own eyes.

Weaknesses: He's seen horrible things in his time, and no matter who you might be, horrible sights and smells and experiences tend to stay with you. It's a rare night when he does not relive his experiences in his dreams, and thus he is constantly haunted by the world that he had unwittingly stepped in to. In modern times, we'd call it PTSD. Eb Quantrill calls it "the spectre he can't kill."

You would be hard-pressed to find a more hedonistic individual than Eb Quantrill. He has stated time and time again that "I want to die like I was when I came into this world, but at a ripe age with a glass of bourbon in my right hand, an opium pipe in my left, my naked body laying atop silk sheets fitted atop a feather mattress, with a voluptuous, naked female companion laying beside me."

Birthplace: Wilmington, North Carolina.

Nationality: American.

Ethnicity: Scots-Irish/English.

Sexuality: Heterosexual.

Place of Education: Life, dude.

Religion: He's an Agnostic. Morally, he believes in right and wrong, good and evil. He knows what side he's on, but his spiritual views differ greatly. He believes that something - or someone - out there, a force beyond all comprehension created the universe. On the cosmological scale of things, good and evil are irrelevant, and this life-breathing force does not judge its creations.

Motivations: His defining moment came when a case he was working for the Pinkertons took a drastic turn for the worst. In Ribak, he was an unwilling witness to evil's effects upon the innocent, and scarred him forever.

Weapons/Equipment: Eb is known to always have in his possession two weapons: a revolver and a knife. He carries a nickel-plated Colt Single-Action Army revolver, along with 18 silver-tipped bullets, carrying both his revolver and ammunition in a stylish leather gun belt. He also carries a Bowie knife with a silver blade, carried in a sheath on his belt. He also keeps a rifle and a shotgun on the saddle of his horse, specifically a Winchester Model 1873 "Short" Lever-Action Rifle and a Burgess "Coach Gun" (short-barreled, double-barreled shotgun). He is most often seen wearing stylish suits and such, but he is never caught without his black Stetson. Eb also rides atop a brown Mustang named Rosetta, named for an Italian actress that Eb had courted during his early days among the Order.

Family: N/A.

Background: Ebenezer Quantrill was born in 1859, as the United States slowly emerged from the Antebellum Era. He was too young to comprehend why his nation was torn on issues, but when his state seceded and the South warred against the North, he was drawn into the conflict. He grew up in the Confederacy, while his parents were playing both sides. His father, a merchant ship captain, was running the Union blockade and discreetly smuggling slaves over to Europe, while his mother hid escaped slaves, lost Union soldiers, and Unionists. He didn't see the worst of the war until Fort Fisher fell, when the Union Army descended upon Wilmington and General Bragg and his Confederate troops retreated from the city. Due to the Quantrill family's "cooperation" with the Union in a case in which they hid a stranded Union naval officer from the Home Guard, their property was not ravaged by the occupying troops.

Times were hard in the South, with the bungling of Reconstruction and the rise of militant white supremacy. His father was an outspoken Republican, and the Quantrill family paid the price, shortly after Eb had turned 15. The Klan burnt down the family's home and lynched his parents, with Eb escaping his hometown and joining the US Army. He lied about his age, and he was sent West, where the US Army was embroiled in a war with the Indian tribes whose land was being encroached upon. He was assigned to a cavalry outfit out in the Dakotas, taking part in the Great Sioux War of 1876. He experienced plenty of violence, and gained a reputation as a reliable, if not model, soldier in the ranks of the US Army. He served until some time after his 19th birthday, at which point he left the Army and made his way to New Mexico.

He found himself in the tiny town of Sheridan, named after the famed Union Cavalry officer. Eb worked as a miner, a saloon bouncer, stagecoach guard, a cowboy, and even a pimp at one point for 2-3 years until he participated in a Marshal's posse to remove a group of outlaws that were ambushing settlers and stagecoaches outside of town. His courage during the battle impressed the US Marshal, who decided to take on Eb as one of his men. With the arrival of the railroad in Sheridan and the discovery of several deposits of gold and silver, the small town began to go, and Eb enjoyed his new line of work. By day, he was arresting malcontents and undesirables around the county while wearing a badge. By night, he was wooing the women of Sheridan, attending traveling thespian performances, and "dominating" the gambling tables of the town. While not the most morally-upright Marshal, he was excellent when it came to tracking down and subduing outlaws.

At the young age of 28, after 6-7 years as a Deputy US Marshal, he was hired by the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. His work took him from hunting outlaws in the West, to investigating rabble-rousing anarchists, communists, and socialists in the industrial slums of Chicago and the North. At the age of 33, he would soon find himself embroiled in something much bigger than outlaws or union activity.

In 1892, he was dispatched to investigate the kidnapping of Dalia McPherson, an heiress to the McPherson Ferry Service fortune, who was kidnapped from her mansion in Boston. Eb's investigation led to him discovering that Dalia had been taken to Europe, and he followed in pursuit, taking into his company an English man by the name of Lyle Stanton, who claimed to be a Scotland Yard inspector. The two men discovered that the kidnappers had roots in the Gypsy community, and they eventually followed the kidnappers' trail to a small Polish village known as Ribak. It was at that point that Eb's views on the supernatural were completely flipped upside down.

After a few days in Ribak, chaos broke loose. Otherwordly creatures and demented members of a local cult were rampaging through the streets, slaughtering or capturing men, women, and children alike. Eb and Lyle were able to fight off their aggressors and escape the village, but not before learning that Dalia was trapped in the town cathedral, in preparation to serve as a sacrifice to facilitate the arrival of some macabre sex demon. Enlisting the help of a few surviving villagers, Eb and Lyle led a horseback charge into Ribak. After 12 hours of vicious fighting against the demonic forces, Eb and Lyle were barely able to save Dalia and prevent the arrival of the demon.

Following the ordeal and the delivery of Dalia back to her family in Boston, Lyle revealed to Eb that he was actually a member of The Order of Argentum. He extended an offer to Eb, and despite the American not possessing a college degree, he was allowed into the Order. 5-6 years later, and he is a member of the Indagator Agency, the Order's most skilled agents.

I've fixed a typo in the character app. In the Religion section, I stated that "your characters are most likely to be atheist." It was supposed to say "your characters are most likely NOT to be atheist." Sorry guys.

Imperial New Vegas wrote:-snip-

It's a good start, but there are a few areas I'd like to address:

1. Why is he atheist? Becoming a career demon hunter usually has the affect of solidifying belief in religious forces. I know that I wrote "your character is most likely to be atheist" in the app, but that was an unfortunate typo (as explained above). It's perfectly fine to be atheist, but just explain why he maintains his disbelief in godly figures.

2. The Order is not a branch of the British government, even though it was originally founded on Parliament's dime. It's a private organization of detective-hunters for hire, much like the RL Pinkertons or Blackwater. You don't have to be a British citizen to gain membership, so why was his deportation reversed?

NICE! The Pinkertons were actually a major influence on the development of this plot idea. It'll be good to have one onboard.

1. Alfred believes that the relation between God and fairy tales myths like the boogie man, Santa Claus, and Tooth fairy are inseparable. He thinks their full of shit, basically. Of course, this is coming from a guy who hunts werewolves and vampires for a living. But despite being powerful, they aren't godly figures.

2. I assumed that this would be taking place in London. Seeing as how the order really wanted him within their ranks, they requested HMG to reverse his deportation.

1. Fair enough. But holy relics do harm some species, such as vampires. This renders his beliefs somewhat contradictory, but he's mentally unstable. So I guess that fits.

2. We will be starting off in London/Britain, but the plotline will eventually take us all over the globe.

Regardless, ACCEPTED. I will add Dr. Kappel to the Roster.

Given his experience, I suppose the Order could make an exception. But be warned -- it'll likely be controversial amongst the rest of the Huntsmen.

And with Eb's debauchery, he's likely already the most controversial member of the Order. He's basically a riverboat gambler.

And with Eb's debauchery, he's likely already the most controversial member of the Order. He's basically a riverboat gambler.

Yes, he will certainly be looked down upon by some of the more conservative Argentum authorities.

I sent out a few invites, and I might send out a few more, depending on whether or not those certain people will be interested.

Dibs on one of the female apps available, will come up with the app itself later. Or at least start on it.

In the event Alfred gets infected, could he use this to help the order?

No. In the event that an Agent becomes infected by a creature's disease, they become an enemy of the Order. The Order's goal is to eradicate the Devil's minions entirely. For a Huntsman or Agent to work with a monster would be as preposterous as the President making an alliance with Bin Laden (in a realistic, conspiracy theory-free world of course).
