I swear by God this humble vow,
That evil I shall disallow;
To safeguard mankind's preservation,
And shun all private inclination;
To banish the Devil to his fiery gallows,
And devote myself to the pursuit of shadows.
Oath to the Order of Argentum
The Pursuit of Shadows
A RUDASLAVIA ORIGINAL ROLEPLAY
For ages, the existence of these creatures was denied -- dismissed as folkloric myth! The institutions of civilization medicated the people's fears with faith in benevolent deities. Perhaps this was for the best. The panic-stricken terror of "superstitious" men and women subsided with the growth of modern theocracy. But there were those who maintained the recognition of truth. These few independent warriors, strong in both worship and battle, engaged the monstrosities in a secretive war that lasted throughout the progressing centuries.
But it wasn't enough. In their superior strength and overwhelming numbers, the devils shattered the ranks of their hunters. Lacking in organized unity and suffering the weight of their task, most who dared to pursue the monsters fell. A bloodbath ensued, allowing the wicked beings to thrive in the shadows and feed off humanity's ignorance like parasites.
Until the rise of the Industrial Revolution.
Armed with the conventions of latter-day weaponry, the tide of the war shifted in favor of the hunters. One by one, the festering nests of darkness were eradicated. One by one, the creatures fell to the bullets and blades of their relentless pursuers. But the hunters lacked a principle key to success -- unity.
Noting this substantial weakness, two British aristocrats rose to prominence: Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet. With covert financial backing from Parliament, they founded the Order of Argentum in 1836. A belligerent organization of utmost secrecy, the Argentum Order was composed of militant investigators. Devout in their faith and well-trained in the art of hunting, the Argentum detectives dedicated their lives to the global pursuit and annihilation of the monsters. Though once an exclusively British institution, the Order rapidly gained momentum throughout Europe by 1850.
By 1880, the Argentum Order had established strongholds in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Colonial dispatches in Africa also became vital to the operation. Strengthened by their efficient unity, the Order's hunters decimated the numbers of their prey worldwide. Suddenly, the dream of a complete human victory became an achievable reality.
It is now 1898, the closing of a century. In an effort to solidify its total defeat of the monsters, the Order's high command has established the elite Indagator Agency (I.A.) -- the best of the best Argentum hunters. The I.A. has been assigned one simple mission: to obliterate what remains of the Devil's grasp on humanity.
You, a dedicated member of the Order, have just been made an Indagator Agent. Will you finally destroy the putrid creatures once and for all...or fail in your endeavors?
The Order of Argentum
Founded by Arthur Wellesley and Sir Robert Peel in 1836, the Order of Argentum (or Argentum Order) is a secretive conglomerate of trained detective-hunters. Though established with British Parliamentary finances, the Order is not a branch of the British government. Instead, it is a private organization without allegiance to any one nation. Its sole aim is to eradicate the influence of the Devil's earthly minions, an effort which has proven largely successful.
The Argentum Order has a rigid, yet simplistic, hierarchy. At the bottom of the totem pole lies the informants. Informants are technically not official members of the Order, but rather trusted associates of the organization that probe society for clues regarding malicious supernatural activity. Through an intricate network of communications, informants pass their findings on to the Huntsmen. Huntsmen are the Order's sanctioned foot soldiers. Most are college educated, well-trained detectives that investigate the informants' claims. Upon concluding their investigations, they submit their discovered evidence to review by the Council of Ministers. The Ministers, who hold the highest positions of authority in the Order, either approve or reject the Huntsmen's proof. If the proof is deemed valid, the Ministers usually order the execution of the accused "paranormal criminal(s)." The execution is then carried out by the Huntsmen who had initially gathered the evidence.
While all Huntsmen are permitted to collaborate and associate with one another as they please, none are permitted to know the identities of the Ministers. This sustains the overall security of the Order, as the faces of the high command are unknown to lower-ranking members.
The Order is based out of London, England. It is currently comprised of about 2,000 members, not including informants. The Council of Ministers seats 25 officials that vote on the validity of presented case evidence. As the institution was initially founded in Britain, the majority of Huntsmen are citizens of the British Empire (roughly 60%, in fact). Another 30% hail from various Western nations in Europe and North America. The remaining 10% includes members from widely differing nationalities, ranging from African colonials to residents of Eastern Asia. The lack of racial restrictions makes it possible for affiliates of any ethnicity to be inducted.
All Order members are required to have a college education (at least a bachelor's degree in any field) and five years of training in both investigation and combat. As a result of these high standards, most Huntsmen can identify as being part of either the middle or upper classes. However, there is no official class restriction. Provided that he/she meets the educational requirements, a lowerclassman can receive Order training and membership.
In accordance with the Argentum Doctrine of Gender Equality (1869), women are permitted to be inducted into the Order. However, because educated women are so few in number, there are only a handful of female Huntsmen.
The Indagator Agency
The Indagator Agency was just founded by the Council of Ministers in 1898. It is a team of elite Huntsmen dedicated to destroying the Devil's monsters once and for all. Indagator Agents are unique in that they do not require Council approval to act on their investigations. If they believe a suspect guilty of paranormal crimes, they may react as they see fit. This power comes with great responsibility; for if one is falsely accused of paranormal crimes and executed, the mistaken Agent will be expelled from the Order and likely sentenced to death/life imprisonment.
Indagator Agents are the Order's very best and most qualified Huntsmen. They are master detectives and hunters who have devoted their very souls to the total destruction of their prey. To be a part of the Indagator Agency is amongst the greatest honors an Order member can receive.

Weaponry/Technology
So I'm sure a lot of you sci-fi fans have a Steampunk boner after reading the information above. However, I'm afraid these next words will greatly disappoint you: this is NOT a Steampunk RP. I like Steampunk, so long as it's part of a videogame. As far as RP's go, I am selective about which Steampunk storylines I follow. Thus, this RP will be focused on real-life weaponry and technology that actually existed during the late Victorian/early Edwardian period in 1898.
As the Order is dedicated to hunting the most dangerous of supernatural entities, silver is crucial to a Huntsman's arsenal. Bullets and blades of silver are common to the inventories of Order members. And, since most of their prey consists of Devil-associated creatures, holy relics are equally essential tools of veteran hunters.
