Dawn of Nations-1850 AH RP (OOC, OPEN)

Postby Southern Babylonia » Tue May 05, 2015 6:39 pm

As the dust settles on the fields of blood and torment that tore down the old Europe of feudal contracts and dynastic squabbles once and for all, people all around the Western world, soldiers and businessmen, kings and coal miners, are singing new tunes, be they military marches or peace ballads, anthems of empires or anthems of workers. New powers rise up, driven forward by steam engines and Gatling guns. For now, the "civilised" rush to plant their flags in the four corners of the globe before the others, but their will come a tipping point, when their nice flagpoles will have nowhere left to go but on each others' turfs. Then what a commotion there will be! But doubtless, some of those flags will have to go down in that fight, while others will stand tall, planted in the ground, and define the way we think, speak and act for generations to come. Which ones, of course, is an ever-present question...
______________________________________________________________________________________________

And with that lousy formality of an intro, welcome to Dawn of Nations, my new Industrial Era AH RP! I haven't been on the forums for a while, but I'm happy to be back and hopefully making more RPs in the future. The rules are as follows:

1. Teh obvious no trolling, flaming, godmodding, etc. And OP's word is final as always.
2. Although this is an AH RP, I'd like to keep to a general frame of realism and at least a little historical accuracy. When you make your nation, take the RL history of your chosen area in to consideration, as well as keeping note of obvious geographic and technological constraints.
3. Let's all agree to do the best quality RPing we can, shall we? Each post should be at least 1 solid paragraph, 5 full lines, or both. If one post somewhere is slightly under, that's understandable, but strictly no one-liners. If someone seriously breaks this rule, it will result in a warning the first time, followed by a suspension from the RP, and I'd rather not have to deal with that.
4. We'll start off with time as follows: 1 page=2 months. If people want to change this later, adjustments can be made.
5. Don't completely copy RL nations, though you can very much resemble them and even bear their names. I'd like to keep this at least somewhat AH.
6. Thou shalt have fun.

Full Nation Name: Les États-Unis d'Amérique (United States of America)
Short Nation Name: Amérique
Territory:
Official Language(s): French (Canadian forms and Louisiana, though Québécois is considered standard). Several Native American languages (Cherokee, Cree, Innu, etc.), Spanish and English are also spoken in some areas.
Form of Government: Constitutional Republic, Representative Democracy
Head of State: Jean-Baptiste Deshôtels
Head of Government: Jean-Baptiste Deshôtels
Capital City: Québec City
Population: 11,00,000
Religion: Roman Catholicism is the most widely practised faith, though communities of Protestants and Jews exist, as well as various Native American belief systems
Army Size: 190,000 active, 300,000 reserves
Army Strengths: The Coureurs de Bois, the main light infantry force, have excellent marksmanship and stamina, and the integration of Native combat strategies grants troops the ability to use terrain to their great advantage and mount effective surprise attacks, as well as skill in close quarters and hand-to-hand.
Army Weaknesses: Overall, standard troops lack great discipline, and have trouble with forming up quickly and effectively in open field combat. Additionally, the nation's artillery is mostly outdated and poorly manned.
Navy Size: 120 ships; 60 frigates, 40 ships of the line, 15 steamships, 5 ironclad prototypes
Navy Strengths: The United States possess many ships equipped with cannon suited for rapid, somewhat accurate fire, making them effective in bombarding enemy positions in collaboration with ground forces.
Navy Weaknesses: Most of the ships themselves are poorly protected against enemy volleys, and the vast majority aren't yet equipped with any kind of steam power.
Economy: For a long time, the American economy has relied on the fur trade for much of its revenue, and this continues, though urban areas are quickly becoming more industrialised, and there is increased mass production of wood-related products. The government encourages hunters to seek to maintain populations of hunted animals so as to ensure continued profit in heavily hunted areas, though overall, animal populations seem ever-abundant. In the southern parts of the States, cotton plantations are an important part of the economy, and slavery is still legal in most of those areas.
Main Exports: Wood (Oak, Cedar, Maple, Spruce, etc.), Lumber, Furniture, Pelts, Beer, Cotton, Naval Supplies, Spices
History: The total of French colonies on the North American mainland, primarily composed of Canada, Acadia and Louisiana, stretched from Labrador to the Gulf of Mexico in the latter half of the 17th century. However, starting in 1713, consecutive wars and squabbles began to turn in favour of the British, with the loss of Nova Scotia at the Treaty of Utrecht and the increasing control of the English forces on Newfoundland. The Acadian community in Nova Scotia resented British occupation, and the 1749 demand that they either swear allegiance to the crown or face deportation prompted a joint insurrection with the Mi'kmaq. When Father Le Loutre and an assembled force of approximately 800 Acadian militiamen and 550 Mi'kmaq warriors captured Halifax in 1754, the British were handed back the settlement on the condition that Nova Scotia remain demilitarised for 30 years. Encouraged by the success of Father Le Loutre's War, France declared war the following year, when the Seven Years' War was breaking out in Europe. After a foiled attempt by the British General Wolfe to stage a battle on the plains of Abraham, Westminster was forced to agree to the terms of the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ceded all of Acadia and Newfoundland to France, as well as much of contested Appalachia and the whole of Rupert's Land.

The people of the colonies, however, did not rejoice very long. France's focus on the North American front had caused her to have to pay large reparations to Prussia after a string of defeats, and to pay for these, taxes and tariffs were raised a great deal. This upset many of the colonists a great deal, as they lacked any American-born representative to the royal court. In November 1779, a riot erupted in downtown Montreal, in which the Gendarmes were called in, and ended up killing 59 rioters and capturing 230 others, all of whom were executed without trial. This was enough to prompt a wholesale uprising in the city, led by General Hébert Lesvesque, which subsequently spread to Québec within two months, Port-Royal and Dieppe in February 1780, Detroit in June, and finally New Orleans in January 1781. A final battle was fought between the revolutionaries and a royal army landed from Europe near Plaquemine, Louisiana, on March 17th 1784, in which Lesvesque's army definitively routed the army of 13,000 French regulars. Lesvesque, in collaboration with Phillipe Muise, Jean-Marie Groulx, André Pelletier and Guillaume Vasquez, drafted a constitution and divided the electoral districts. Lesvesque was elected the first president of the État-Unis d'Amérique in April 1785, and served in the position until his death in 1792. A tradition continued by all governments since is that of respect for the autonomy of Native peoples, as they played an important role in the revolution. In recent years, both urban and rural areas have been receiving floods of immigrants, mostly welcomed, from Germany, Ireland and Italy, among other countries. As it stands, the government enforces no policies putting major pressure on these newcomers to adopt the local culture and switch entirely to French, particularly in rural areas where they have become the majority, though they are expected to learn the language for most substantial social advancement.

Full Nation Name: The Imperial Taganian Unified States
Short Nation Name: TUS
Territory: Argentinia, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia
Official Language(s): (include other widely-spoken languages) Spanish is the official language of the TUS. Portuguese, french, and english are also widely spoken
Form of Government: Dictorial Absolute monarchy
Head of State: Empress Megan Payne
Head of Government: High Primo Aden Prior
Capital City: Payne City (former Buenes Ares)
Population: 10,000,000
Religion: (state religion if applicable, and others widely practised in your nation) Catholcism is very big here.
Army Size: 250,000
Army Strengths: Artillery is the driving factor of the TUS army. Their infantry are very good marksman. Their cavalry provides a minor role for shock attacks on the flanks and running down enemy forces. Also Grand General Black is the master-mind behind the TUS army. The infantry of the TUS are good at fighting from a distance. Guirella warfare is encorporated when they can use it to the best advantage. The TUS infantry are becoming more mechanized as well with guns and the ability to use them. Large canons are becoming more and more common. Along with the ability to move them. Gatlin Guns are becoming more readily avaible for the armies use.
Army Weaknesses: The TUS likes to put their canons up close with their fighting men so grape-shot can be used to flatten the enemy. So the gunners are often in range of fire. And can be easily attacked. The infantry men are bad at melee. Except for the Imperial Guard. Their former Spanish soldiers of the best regiments in Argentina. So their all around soldiers. The infantry is easily spooked at the sight of charging cavalry. So fighting in the trees has become the commands answer. Along with wooden stakes to force the infantry to come and fight them.
Navy Size: 4 Man O Wars, 25 Ships of the Line, 50 Brigs, 100 sloops, 200 patrol boats.
Navy Strengths: Their brodsides are the strength of the fleet. The rams on the ships are also effective. Grand Admiral SIlva is a naval officer who is behind the rebuilding TUS fleet.
Navy Weaknesses: The fleet is stretched thin protecting the nations large water borders. But the capital city is protected by the Man O Wars and the ships of the lines. Patrol vessels and sloops are the power of alerting the nation about any attacks and pending invasions. The fleet is also very inexperinced as they are not use to running large warships. The smaller vessels are easier to be commanded and swarms of them are being used to overpow the larger ships.
Economy: Slavery is still used in the TUS to mine for precious gems, silver, and gold. Also the sugar trade, lumber industry. Manufactoring is also building as the country begins to mass-produce its own clothes and begins to fuel its own growing industry.
Main Exports Sugar, cotton, textiles, furniture, guns, and spices.
History: (at least one paragraph, or at least 8 points in point form) The Imperial Taganian Unified States (TUS) formed during the chaos of the world. Europe was in shambles. So Spain called home its troops to try and restore order. But the colonies, mainly Argentina and Bolivia through off their shackles and declared independence. Argentina, under the command of General Jordan Payne, marched off to war. A large fleet of Spanish warships were seized loaded down with supplies being sent back to Spain. Fleets were being seized. The Argentines rounded up Spanish citizens of power and just ordinary and were locked up on prison ships. The white and gold colored uniforms of the Spanish army were being given to the Argentina army. Just the front gold buttons were stripped off and replaced with just normal buttons. Also the hats were given a bright blue feather to show they were not Spanish forces. Also the flags of Spain were stripped and replaced with a golden symbol. A golden R with an E around it. Two wings extending and a star over it. The star of liberty. The Argentine army saw quick victories against unsuspecting Spanish forces. Ports were slaughters. Spanish forces were being captured and slaughtered. Disarmed and disrobed.

The Revolution was struck hard when General Payne died suddenly on a return visit to Buenes Ares. Several say the Generals wife, Megan Payne, killed him. But she was proven innocent as she had slept in the bed with him. And was woken by screaming maids who had come to waken them. The Generals Wife lead the Generals elite guardsmen to the Senatorial Council down the street and had them slaughtered for murdering her husband. She proclaimed herself the Savior of the People. The people, being told of the Senatorial Councils treason, rejoiced at the Savior. She turned the Argentina Republic to the Imperial Taganian Unified States. And placed herself as the Queen of the Union. The people were allowed to vote. She had a 99% approval rating. Now the nation is rebuilding. Reforging its power.

I like it, but could you possibly expand more on your military strengths and weaknesses? Having reliance on artillery is ok, but I can only imagine that your infantry plays an important role, and you just say they're good marksmen.
Also, could you give me a link to that RP, please? I searched for it and found nothing. Still, consider yourself provisionally accepted. :p

Full Nation Name: The Kingdom of France under the House of Orleanes
Short Nation Name: France
Territory: Mainland France, French Guiana, and French Algeria
Official Language(s): French and regional languages (including Arabic, Brenton, Alsatian, Flemish, Lorraine Francoian, Old Frankish, etc.)
Form of Government: Constitutional monarchy.
Head of State: King Ferdinand Philippe I
Head of Government: François Guizot
Capital City: Paris
Population: 36,472,000
Religion: Secular (However Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, and Islam are practiced.)
Army Size: 500,000 regulars
Army Strengths: The French Army is one of the most powerful in Europe. Because of the Industrial Revolution, new technology is being added to the French Army.
Army Weaknesses: However, the French don't have as much troops as nations like the British Empire do and if there was ever a war, France would struggle to get troops into the army.
Navy Size: 200 ships total (Which includes the mainland and France's colonies)
Navy Strengths: The French navy has helped France capture colonies such as Algeria from the Barbary States due to the navy being more advanced than the Barbarian Navy.
Navy Weaknesses: The French navy is not as big as extremely large navy of the British Empire and because of that, the French would struggle to compete with the British for building colonies in various continents such as Africa and Asia. The French mainland also had two natural harbors (Brest and Toulon), but other than that, the French used other ports to help dock their ships.
Economy: The French Economy suffered a recession in the late 1840s due to the greed of the administrators of certain workplaces (including factories, banks, etc.), which lead to the revolution of 1848 lead by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, a cousin of the late Napoleon Bonaparte.

King Louis Philippe abdicated in favor of his son, Ferdinand. Ferdinand crushed the revolution, but allowed democratic reforms to restore stability to France. Following the revolution, Ferdinand Philippe I and the restored National Assembly came up with plans to help grow the economy. As a result, new discount banks were created in each department to help local regional economies grow. Lots of paper money were printed to help fund certain projects. And hard work was encouraged by the government to help the nation recover from its debts.
Main Exports Grain from Russia, and cotton from the United States
History: 1. France is formed out of the Kingdom of West Francia in 987, following the Dissolution of the Frankish Empire over a century before.

2. Due to the weaknesses of French king, feudal lords begin to take over the country by the 1000s.

3. To restore lands to the French Crown, French kings would ally with lords, forcefully take land of weak lords, or simply go to war with stubborn lords. With England (their rulers are descended from Anglo-Saxon and Norman invaders) taking over many parts of France, French kings launch the Hundred Years' War to retake their lands from 1337 to 1453, and the French eventually win and unifies the lands.

4. During the 16th century, Roman Catholics and Protestants in France would fight various civil wars until a truce was settled.

5. France would build their colonial empire, establishing colonies in the Americas in the 1500s and beating the British in the French and Indian War until losing most of them to their colonists by the 1760s.

6. The French Americans, growing tired of high taxes putting pressure on the American colonists, rebel against the crown with help of the British. The rebels eventually win.

7. The French have high debts to pay off the costs of the American Revolution

8. Because of high debts of the American Revolution and projects that are simply a waste of time to the French people, the French monarchy falls and the Revolutionary Wars of France begin and eventually evolve into the Napoleonic Wars from 1789 to 1815.

9. France is restored under the Bourbons, but the Orleanes take over in 1830, establishing the present kingdom.

10. The French Revolution of 1848 happens, but is crushed by the armies of Ferdinand Philippe I.

Alright, well, here's an application for greater Germany ruled by the House of Hapsburg. The idea of German unification happening under Hapsburg rule is one that interests me greatly, so that's what I decided to go for.
Full Nation Name: The German Empire, also known as the Hapsburg Empire.

Short Nation Name: Germany/Austria.

Territory: Austria, Bohemia, and Germany.

Official Language(s): German and Czech.

Form of Government: Semi-constitutional federal monarchy.

Head of State: Kaiserlich und Königlich Franz-Joseph I von Hapsburg

Head of Government: Minister-President Eduard Lasker

Capital City: Vienna

Population: Somewhere around thirty one point eight million, according to varying historical demographics from Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany.

Religion: There is no state religion. Catholicism is the dominant religion in Austria and Bavaria, while Lutheranism is the dominant religion in Prussia and the rest of Germany.

Army Size: Around six hundred thousand standing troops, with significantly more reservists.

Army Strengths: Based off the military reforms of Prussia, the German military is among the most modern and well organized military groups in Europe. The Reichsheer is a disciplined and technologically advanced fighting group.

Army Weaknesses: Unlike most other European countries, conscription is rather limited, with smaller than average conscription quotas and shorter conscription mandates. Most of the army consists of voluntarily enlisted soldiers, especially German nationalists.

Navy Size: Around the ballpark of thirty eight warships, not including minor commerce defense vessels.

Navy Strengths: It doesn't really have any particular strengths.

Navy Weaknesses: It's among the smallest navies in Europe, which shouldn't come as a surprise considering the fact that both Germany and Austria focused primarily on land forces as opposed to sea forces.

Economy: The German economy is not the most industrialized in Europe, and Germany slightly lags behind Britain and France in terms of industrial capacity. The German economy, however, is one of the fastest growing in Europe, and, with the unification of the German states complete, Germany is starting to feel the full effects of its own Industrial Revolution. The liberal government has been active in passing administrative and economic reforms and, with significant government intervention and investment in the market, the German industry is very rapidly developing. The German education system, also, is the most liberal and efficient in Europe, with Germany having the highest literacy rate on Earth, at 99% literacy, and the Germans have far more educated workers than its economic rivals. In addition, Germany has a quite good transportation system, with railways connecting nearly all the nation.

Main Exports Timber, iron, nickel, copper, salt, agricultural goods, and, to a lesser extent, certain industrial products.

History: German unification occurred, most unexpectedly, in eighteen forty eight during the eighteen forty eight revolutions in both Austria and Germany, with revolutionaries demanding both liberal reforms and unification of the German states. The Academic Legion of Austria, a militant liberal organization of Austrian university students, was the leading liberal faction in the Austrian Revolution, and they quickly grew to become an immensely population organization in Austria. Amidst massive social turmoil and violent revolts, the Minister-President of Austria, Klemens von Metternich (a staunch conservative and opponent of German-Austrian unification) was forced to resign and was replaced with Eduard Lasker, a politician from the Academic Legion. Austria would then face rapid reform, with a new constitution being signed into effect, the first parliament in Austrian history (the Imperial Diet) being created, and the feudal system of Austria being abolished and replaced with a more modern system of administration. The Kaiser, who was then Franz Joseph I after his predecessor Ferdinand I had abdicated in the wake of the revolution, still maintained significant amounts of power in Austria, but for the first time in Austrian history the citizenry was given a small degree of power and the absolute rule of the monarchy was slightly checked.

Similar revolutions were successful all across Germany, with German pan-nationalists staging successful revolutions in most of the German states, including Bavaria, Baden, and Saxony. The path to unification of the German states had been paved, and, all across Germany and Austria, pan-nationalists called for unity amongst the German nations. Most of the German states, under the influence of pan-nationalists, heeded the call, and began a conference in Munich to decide upon the details of a unified German state. The desire to see German unified was nearly unanimous, but one particular detail seriously divided the conference-goers, and that detail was who would be leading the new state of Germany. Austria and Prussia, especially, were vehement that the houses of Hapsburg and Hohenzollern, respectively, be put on the imperial throne of Germany. Ultimately, no compromise could be made, and both Austria and Prussia took up arms against each other and waged war for the crown of greater Germany. Two separate coalitions were created, one seeking to see a Hapsburg ruled Germany, and one seeking to see a Hohenzollern ruled Germany; most southern-German states, and most German Catholic states supported Austria, while most of the northern states supported Prussia.

After seven months of bloody warfare, the Hapsburg coalition ultimately triumphed in the end, the Prussians being decisively defeated by the Austrians and Bavarians. Following the surrender of Prussia and its allies, the Conference of Vienna was summoned, where all the minor German monarchs unanimously agreed to a unified German state and signed a treaty declaring Franz-Joseph I of Austria the Kaiser of Germany. With the creation of the German Empire under Hapsburg rule, there came to be an internal debate in the House of Hapsburg regarding what to do with Hungary and their old Balkan territories; most of the German nationalists didn't want floods of foreigners in their nation, and the call was made to let Hungary, Galicia, Slovakia, and Croatia be independent. Ultimately, Franz-Joseph decided to focus on appeasing the pan-German nationalists, and the Treaty of Dubrovnik officially made the states of Hungary, Galicia, Slovakia, and Croatia have complete independence from the House of Hapsburg. It was a popular move, for the most part. Bohemia, however, a country with a significant German-speaking minority, was not granted independence; instead, Kaiser Franz-Joseph elected to integrate the Czechs into the Empire.

The new German Empire firmly established, the new liberal administration of Germany immediately got to work significantly reforming the German nation. The German economy, without having to deal with dozens of minor governments and nations, was, for the first time, experiencing major scale industrialization. The German government, nationalizing a significant portion of the economy and implementing major economic reforms, invested massively into industrializing Germany, with numerous government backed companies and factories being propped up. The German rail system, also, was overhauled, and, without having to deal with the mess that was pre-unification Germany, the German railways became infinitely more efficient. Countless social reforms, too, including the creation of a welfare system and safeguards to prevent the exploitation of workers were put in place, the liberal government wasting no time in getting to work creating a new and modern German state.

The government, currently, is continuing to rapidly reform Germany both economically and socially. The German government, while still fairly autocratic and still having a significant amount of power put in the hands of the Hapsburg monarchy, is among the most liberal in the world, and the German state is easily the most socially progressive in Europe. Still, the House of Hapsburg aims far higher than simply reforming the already existing German state. Heavily influenced by German pan-nationalists, the House of Hapsburg aims to expand the new greater German nation to include Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Belgium, all states with a German minority; in addition, weakening the French and Russians is a big aim of Germany. The Hapsburg government maintains friendly relations with the Slovaks, Croatians, Hungarians, and Galicians, all of which are allies of the German Empire.

RP Example: If you really want, I can link you to a couple other RPs I've been in, but I'd prefer to let my writing speak for itself.

Provisionally accepted, but (sorry for nitpicking) could you bump down that literacy rate just a little? I'm okay with, say, 70%, but having literally almost everyone literate in 1850 is a bit extreme.

The real German literacy rate was at near universal levels, even as early as the mid to late eighteen hundreds. Germany was one of the very few countries, in real life, to have universal education, with Prussia being one of the first countries to institute a mandatory education system. Germany, historically, was easily one of the most educated countries in the world, and definitely a contender for the most well educated and most literate country out of any. It might seem out of place for a country to have such an incredibly high literacy rate in the eighteen hundreds, but that was, in fact, what Germany was known for at the time.
