Do you hold elections in your nation?

Postby Chileana » Sun Apr 26, 2015 4:04 am

Does your nation hold elections and if so how do they work? Are they national, regional, local or all of the above? When are they held?

I'll start with answering my own OP.
Chileana, even though it is a communist nation, does hold elections.
The details can be found in my factbook if you are interested: https://www.nationstates.net/nation=chi ... /id=409592

Yeah, we do.

On the national scale, there is an election every 6 years (for Prime Minister, Vice-Prime Minister and Upper House Seats), and another every 4 years (for Lower House Seats). Coincides every 12 years (on average).

On the kingdom scale (sans Vasterskold), there is an election every 4 years (for Kingdom Minister, Vice-Kingdom Minister and Kingdom Parliament Seats).

On the department scale, there is an election every 4 years (for Governor and Vice-Governor).

On the city scale, there is an election every 4 years (for Mayor and Vice-Mayor).

On any level, snap elections are there, when necessary.

Yes there is held an election to elected 12 members of the council of twelve that rules Maldovania. It is 6 men and 6 women. And the election happens every 3 year. And you can serve 5 terms so at the most a council member can sit for 15 years.

And all members of the Council have to be between 30 and 40 years old

Elections for all positions in the federal government (except for most court positions, which are elected by other court members) are held every five years (with one next month); local elections for regional/municipal positions are held every three or four years (does not coincide with national election years, exact time or length depends on area).

Elections occur every 6 years for the President, Prime Minister, and the members of Parliament. The Chancellor is appointed by the Emperor.

Every few years or so, the Imperial Government has General Elections for Chancellor and the Imperial Council.
Currently, the government is in a grand coalition of The Imperial Unity Party and the Social Democrats, because Auzkhia uses mixed proportional representation in the elected House of Deputies in the Imperial Council.
The states have general elections too, in the republican Hanseatic cities, the city leader is elected by popular vote and so are the city councils everywhere.

Yeungwai is a semi-presidential republic, with an elected president and 400-member National Assembly. National Assembly elections are held every 4 years, and presidential elections every 5 years. International observers were invited to attend the first few, and the elections were widely praised as free and fair, albeit with some blatant gerrymandering.

Yes and no. Northumbria has a quasi-elected semi-absolute monarchy: the king isn't necessarily the son of the previous king and his powers are absolute so long as the assembly of powerful nobles, priests and freemen approve them to be.

Freemen are chosen by their respective communities but that sometimes simply means he inherited the post, as per nobles. Priests are likewise chosen by the church which, in reality, they're appointed so many priests hold their positions by virtue of their office.

It's a complicated system. Adding more (read: real) democracy into the mix makes it more so.

Yes. All citizens over the age of sixteen are required to vote. Failure to vote in a local, state, or national-level election incurs tax penalties.

Yes, we have elections for regional and local levels. National leadership is determined solely though military seniority.

Regional elects are every 6 years and local elections are every 4 years. Voting is mandatory for all members of the military, failure to vote is punished by a fine.

Yep. From local to national elections, held on average every five years. There are also referendums for things of great matter (war, accession into an international organization, etc.). Sometimes we elect our monarch too, if the successor doesn't stem from the core Imperial family (the monarch's immediate and closest extended family).

Elections to Stormaen's House of Assembly, commonly called "Parliament", must – by law – occur at least every 5 years.

Despite this, since 1973, elections have occurred on the first Thursday of October in every fourth year from 1973. This was a precedent set by former chief minister Oliver York throughout his 17 year ministry, although never enshrined in law. In 1992, the Elections Act 1993* was passed, fixing parliamentary terms to four years and setting the date of all subsequent elections to the first Thursday in October of every fourth year from 1993.

However, early elections are still possible if 55% of the House of Assembly votes to dissolve itself early. The Governor-General may also dissolve the House of Assembly if there is a political impasse and no single person can command the confidence of the House (a.k.a. form and maintain a majority government or a minority government with confidence and supply).

Since 1973, every election has occurred on the first Thursday of October in every fourth year from 1973 and there have been no early elections. The closest this came to happening was in 2003 during the chief ministry of James Strachan. The opposition, led by the Progressive Conservatives and supported by the Liberal Party, launched a motion of no confidence in Strachan. Rebels in Strachan's Labour Party also backed the calls, allowing the motion to pass and become a vote of confidence. The vote passed in Strachan's favour by 3 votes (out of 100). Had Strachan failed the vote, he would have had to resign (due to no longer commanding the confidence of the House) and, most likely, parliament would have had to have been dissolved. A similar vote in 2005 failed by a wider margin but cost Strachan his position and he was replaced by his party.
