Viking: A world of the water
IC
The year is 840AD and the Nordic countries are becoming more present in the world each year. They seek new land to claim and treasures to capture. For years the coasts of northern Europe and Britain have been raided already and the reputation of the Nordic people is spreading faster than ever before. Nations fear the Nordic people, some seek diplomatic solutions while others try to set up harsh resistance against them, but for now there doesn’t seem to be a way of stopping them. Here’s your chance to lead the Nordic people further by exploring new worlds, claiming new lands and obtain valued treasures.
OP: Dain II Ironfoot
Co-Op:
There are three maps we will be using here: a world map, a political map and a player map.
The World map will show all kingdoms, tribal confederations and empires throughout the discovered world, it will also contain their reliability towards the Nordic people and their leaders primary approach towards all others.
The political map will show the Nordic lands and the lands of all Jarls within them. Here you can see which Jarl owns which province and where his/her loyalty lies.
At last there will be a Player map, showing which player controls which land and it also shows the land that is still available.
Population:
Population will play a role in this RP as the Scandinavian lands weren’t all that populated. There’s a small system which will tell you how many people live in your land.
There are Colonies, Cities and Capitals. These three will have different populations and will be able to support you with different amounts of Vikings for your conquests.
A colony will always start with just 100 people and it will grow with 50 people a year untill it reaches the population of a thousand. Once that population has been reached it will turn into a city which will grow with 100 per year till it reaches a population of 5 thousand. After that it will be named a capital which will grow with 200 per year untill its maximum is reached at 30 thousand.
While this may sound simple, there are some things to keep in mind:
There may only be one capital in each Nordic country and there cannot be one in other artic climate lands. So as example a capital cannot be established in Iceland but it can in England.
For one thousand people you’ll be able to draw 500 vikings for your wars and raids, but keep in mind that if you need to cross a sea that you need to have enough ships to support them.
If you’re playing a Jarl you will start with a population of 1,000 and will go from there.
At last there will be events that will affect all of us when it comes to the population. There can be a plague or a harsh winter that will reduce all of our populations in the Nordic countries, but there can also be a baby boom which will increase them. These events will come once in a while so be prepared from them.
You should have no worries about this, I will keep track of everybody’s population down below.
A small summary:
Starting Population: 1,000
Population Colony: 100 - 1,000 (+50 per year)
Population City: 1,000 - 5,000 (+100 per year)
Population Capital: 5,000 - 30,000 (+200 per year)
Population = Warriors: 1,000 = 500
Ships and Seafaring:
What is a Viking without a ship. Yes, there are some additions to ships and seafaring aswell.
To start, all Jarls will start out with two ships and all Vikings will start out with one.
Ships can only sail certain lengths so it will take time before you can get to the American continent or the northern shores of Africa. There isn’t a specific rule on this but there are some limits on how far you can sail and how you can sail.
Now you can sail all of the already discovered world without making a stop, but if you want to get further you will have to stop and resupply first. This can be done through two means. First there’s the way of conquering some land or setting up a colony, an easy way to resupply and to advance into unknown territory. Another way is to seek diplomatic ties with another nation in the hope that they will allow you to come to their docks and to resupply there.
Aside from that there are some other rules on sailing, especially looking at how many people you take on a ship.
When you’re going to raid, explore or conquer you have to take Vikings onto your ship. One ship can host 25 Vikings on board. When you’re going to set up a colony you will have to take colonists on board. One ship can host 50 colonists on board.
These two numbers will increase overtime as the ships will get slightly bigger up to a max of 100 vikings/colonists on board.
Ofcourse there will also be events on this part such as a storm, sinking all or an X amount of ships. Or what about a storm that accidently led you to an undiscovered area? It will all pass by from time to time.
A small summary:
To explore you must have either a piece of land into that direction or you must have permission from another country to supply your ships.
Ship = Warriors: 1 = 25 (Increases overtime till 100)
Ship = Settlers: 1 = 50 (Increases overtime till 100)
Gold:
What is raiding without any use for gold, well, here is some use for it after all.
There are three ways to get gold, the first one would be raiding.
The gold you get from raiding villages, cities or even capitals will very much depend on the wealth of the country you’re raiding. By raiding a village you can earn between 5 and 20 gold; By raiding a city this will be between 20 and 50 gold; At a capital this will be between 50 and 100 gold.
Aside from raiding you will earn gold on a yearly basis. A Viking will earn 3 gold per year, a Jarl 5 gold per year and a King 10 gold per year.
The third way is to get gold from another country in return for something, they can hire you as mercenaries or they will simply pay you to leave their land. This can happen from time to time depending on the affected countries stance towards the Nordic people.
Aside from earning money, there are ofcourse ways to spend money aswell.
There are three ways to spend money. First you can buy ships with money, it’s the only way in this RP to obtain ships (aside from perhaps trading with other players). Ships will cost 30 gold each and they’re upkeep free. Colonies also require gold to be established, this price lies a lot higher, 200 gold.
At last there is the possibility of buying land from NPC states which will cost you between 500 and a thousand gold (that is if they don’t want anything from you then your money), which is quiet expensive but probably worth it at some occasions.
Once again no worries, I’ll keep track of the money down below.
A small summary:
Earn gold yearly: 3 gold Viking, 5 Gold Jarl, 10 Gold King
Earn gold through raiding: 5 - 10 per village, 20 - 50 per city, 50 - 100 per capital
Earn gold through diplomacy: Amount of gold depends on the matter
Spend gold on Ships: 1 ship = 30 gold
Spend gold on the establishment of a colony: 200 gold
Spend gold on land from other countries: 500 - 1,000 gold
Viking, Jarl and King:
As you may have noticed there are three types of people that you can play as; Viking, Jarl and King.
A Viking is the one that leads a raid when the Jarl isn’t tagging along. It’s the easiest out of all as you don’t have to watch over people and you don’t have to concern yourself with politics. As a Viking you can attempt to climb the ranks to a Jarl, this can be done through overthrowing your Jarl but this can also be done by establishing a colony and claim it as your own while you’re still under a King. You can establish a colony and claim it as your own without standing under a King though you must take into account that there isn’t really any King that would allow this to happen and your colony would most likely be a short lived one.
A Jarl is the second in rank and the highest in rank you can start with. They act relatively independent though are still (most of the time) under command of a King. Jarls have to watch over the people living in their lands and they will have a busy job looking at politics. There are occasions (like in my case) where the Jarl is independent. An independent Jarl is basicly loyal to nobody but hasn’t claimed the throne of his/her former King/Queen yet. If you want to start as an independent Jarl you can, though it’s not recommended as you need to have support for something like that to hold. If a Jarl becomes independent and he/she has no support from other Jarls the King/Queen might take action against him/her.
At last there’s the King, or Queen for that matter. It’s the highest position you can get and probably the toughest to maintain. A King/Queen has to keep her subjects loyal and happy while he/she has to interfere in not just local politics but also international politics.
Language and Religion:
The two important matters on the international scale in this RP are Language and Religion.
The chance is high that a Jarl from the Nordic countries only knows Old Norse, which ofcourse is not spoken in England for example. Now if you want to enter into diplomacy with an English King it would be wise to know the language. There are two ways to learn a language. First of all there might be a Jarl or King already that knows the language, see if he/she is willing to teach it to you. Another way is to capture a person that speaks the desired language during one of your raids. In either case it will take at least three years to learn a language so keep this in mind.
The other, religion is just as important. In the Nordic countries the common religion is the Norse Religion, which is practiced throughout. Ofcourse in Europe we’ll be dealing a lot with Christians, who will see us as Pagans. Now you can stay loyal to the Norse religion or you can chose to convert to appease the Christian nations. That choice is all up to you, but you must be aware that whatever your choice is, at some point you will either anger the Christians or the Nordic people.
NPC interaction:
As seen a few times above, NPC interaction will be a common deal here. Whether it’s about money, a peace or a piece of land, there’s always something to discuss with NPC nations.
All NPC nations will have a state of mind towards outsiders just as it has a reliability factor as seen in the world map. Based on that you can judge whether it would be wise to enter into diplomatic ties with a certain country. Sometimes these views and the reliability will change after a certain deal or they may fall back to “Unknown” duo to a new King or Queen. All countries that haven’t been visited will only show “Unknown” and you’ll be forced to try them out to see whether they are reliable or not. If you want to interact with a NPC just let me know and I or a Co-Op will let you know what the outcomes would be and such.
Timescale:
The RP will have two basic timeframes, one is the Spring and Summer and the other is Fall and Winter. During the Spring and Summer it is time to raid the coasts, set up colonies and to conquer lands outside of the Nordic lands. The Fall and Winter represent the time to fight out internal struggles. Now this won’t be always like that, there may be times in which you’re forced to stay home during the Spring and Summer becouse of internal issues. This is not an issue though as your internal position is often more important than outside expansion. There’s only one rule to this and that is that you cannot return from raids during winter, so if you’re still out at sea or whatever at the end of the Spring/Summer page then you should hurry up with getting them home. If winter has fallen you will not be able to return and the consequences may be far worse than you would think. One page will represent the Spring and Summer while the page after will ofcourse represent the Fall and Winter.
This may change depending on how things to in the IC.
Posting Rules/Advice:
I have only one rule concerning posts and that is that they should be at least two decent paragraphs long. I will not tolerate less than that, there’s plenty to include and I’d rather see a lot of useless details in a post then I see a one liner with only important stuff.
Aside from that I do have some advice concerning posts. Try at least to post twice per page, one page represents two seasons and it’s much more manageable to post once per season instead of once per page.
Another advice is that when you’re having talks with another player, do them through TG’s or with a Google Doc and post them in one post. It works much quicker, the quality of posts will stay at a proper level and it will save up some space in the IC
