The War in the West
It all began with a quite innocent event; a tournament in King’s Landing. King Aeron Targaryen had ruled with a firm hand for 15 years, and the Seen Kingdoms had been at peace for even longer. The King’s Tournament was the first to be held at King’s Landing in 10 years, and knights from many of the noble families arrived to pay respects to their King, as well as meet with long estranged family members and friends.
However, events took a turn soon after the start of the tournament. King Aeron’s younger brother, Daemon Targaryen, was unseated by Ser Tymond Lannister. Enraged, Daemon attacked the knight, claiming he had cheated. Before the King’s men could intervene, his brother had thrown the knight to the ground and beheaded him, in front of the entire audience. King Aeron’s Kingsguards were quick to apprehend Daemon, and the King had his brother thrown into a dark cell.
The Lannister’s wanted more punishment for the King’s brother, but Aeron was reluctant to kill his own brother. The matter was soon removed from the King’s hands, as Daemon used his influence to escape from the dungeons and ran across the Narrow Sea. King Aeron, at the urging of the Lannisters, issued a statement banning Daemon from ever returning to Westeros.
Five years later, a great illness spread across Westeros, known as the Festering Sickness, arrived in Westeros. Once contracted, this illness caused the afflicted to erupt into sores all across the body before developing an intense cough and eventually dying from built up puss in all organs. The pain often caused the afflicted to go mad, even once they had recovered.
Sadly, King Aeron himself became ill. He survived the illness but was never the same. This was more than could be said for ___________ Stark, the Hand of the King, who contracted the illness and died soon after. With this, Jasper Tully, Lord of Riverrun was called upon to be the next Hand of the King, and he with his eldest and youngest sons arrived in the city shortly thereafter.
Jasper’s youngest son, Mykal Tully, met Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the daughter of King Aeron and sister and betrothed to Prince Visaerys Targaryen. Mykal and Rhaenyra became lovers while in King’s Landing, and it was not long until their affair was found out. Angrily, Visaerys waited for court to assemble before shouting his accusations before the entirety of the Great Hall. King Aeron, a bit unstable after his close meeting with death, apprehended both Rhaenyra and Mykal, imprisoning the both of them. When it became apparent that Rhaenyra was pregnant, Prince Visaerys had her tied to the mast of a ship, and sent into blackwater bay alone during a storm. Visaerys and many others watched as the Princess’s ship sank, dragging her along with it.
Jasper’s eldest son, Garrel Tully was sent back to Riverrun as Jasper Tully, as Hand of the King, ordered his youngest son released, against the wishes of King Aeron, who later relieved him of service. Knowing what had happened, Mykal left his cell, and challenged Visaerys to a duel.
Visaerys agreed, but the night before, had a group of soldiers, led by his Clegane Kingsguard, attacked Mykal, and broke his leg. The next day, Mykal showed up to fight anyway, and was killed by Visaerys.
Jasper Tully left King’s Landing, only to have his caravan be attacked and killed on the Kingsroad by a group of bandits. The Tullys maintain that this was Visaerys doing as well.
Two years later, Visaerys had married __________ Tyrell, and Visaerys younger brother, Aemon, had become acting Hand of the King. It was at this time that King Aeron became sick again, and became immobile. Visaerys ruled the kingdoms through his younger brother, who was only just a young child. It wasn’t for another two years that Prince Aemon and his brother would have a falling out; Aemon tried to appoint Gerold Lannister as Hand of the King, but Visaerys would not have it. Aemon fled the city, heading west and Visaerys became acting regent. The sickly King Aeron died only a month later.
Aemon found allies in Lannisport and Riverrun, and together they raised their forces. Aemon arranged a betrothal to Jera Arryn, bringing the Arryns to his side. These armies marched towards King’s Landing as Visaerys raised the armies of the Stormlands and the Reach. At the same time, Visaerys allowed his uncle Daemon Targaryen, to return from Essos. Daemon brought with him his own host of several thousand sell swords as well as the Black Conjurer, a man rumored to be able to kill a man in battle without touching him.
At the battle of Silver Hill, the Lannister’s host fought and was defeated by the Tyrell and Baratheon forces, and Gerold Lannister retreated to Deep Den, where a long siege began. After several weeks, Gerold Lannister was forced to surrender, and was imprisoned by the Tyrells.
Meanwhile, Garrel Tully was defeated at the Battle of Blackwater Rush. Garrel was captured by Daemon and was soon after killed publically by the Black Conjurer. His army was scattered and it appeared that Visaerys had won.
However, the Arryns forces met up with the remaining Riverlords at Riverrun, and together, they marched south. At the Battle of High Heart, the Arryns and the Tullys defeated Daemon’s forces, killing him and his Black Conjurer, and scattering his soldiers. Continuing south, the Arryn and Tully host fought against the armies of the Reach, forcing a retreat at the Battle of Hornvale, and then again at the Second Battle of Deep Den. The Lannisters, having regrouped, flanked the Tyrells, destroying their host, and ending the fighting in the west.
Meanwhile in King’s Landing, now King Visaerys had pulled together his own host, and marched along the Gold Road to meet Aemon’s supporters. The battle never happened, however, as Lord ____________ Tyrell had his household guard turn against Visaerys, capturing the King and disbanding his forces along the Gold Road. With the King in chains, and no other real enemies to speak of, the united forces returned to King’s Landing, where King Aemon was crowned King. Visaerys was sentenced to death, and executed in King's Landing several weeks after the end of the war.
It has been 20 years since the end of the War in the West, 30 since the events of the Tournament in King’s Landing. The Seven Kingdoms have been enjoying a long period of peace. However, not all is as calm as it seems. The days are beginning to become colder, stirrings of conquerors rise in the East, and Rhaella Targaryen, Mistress of Whisperers and Aunt to King Aemon, has been murdered in the capital by unknown assassins.
