Bill Maher on political correctness...

So basically, this is about how the left is too busy bickering with each other over remarks that don't seem quite progressive enough and not focused enough on what they have in common compared to the right.

I agree. Too often the "politically-correct" variants of leftists show a stubborn unwillingness to meet halfway, and it's not pragmatic at all.

Certainly the Dems deserve to fail, because they would rather be "right" (in the eyes of their own limited clique, always infighting), than President.

On the other hand the GOP are despicable because they espouse values they personally do not honor, such as supporting the military, or supporting working families, in order to dupe people into voting for them.

So, they would clearly rather be President than be moral.

I saw this video earlier and I really enjoyed it. The part about The Vagina Monologues being cancelled due to being offensive to transgender women resonated with me. Not one transgender woman I know gives the slightest crap about The Vagina Monologues in any way, shape, or form and it seems like some people who were likely not trans* at all went out of their way to fix a problem that does not exist.

With regard to the wider issue of this seemingly increasingly common attitude, I wrote something relevant in the LGBT thread earlier:
I feel this kind of gender politics is part of a wider identity politics that is becoming popular right now, since the whole 'progressive stack' thing began. Some progressives (ironically it seems they are usually white, middle class, educated people) are taking it upon themselves to sort everyone neatly into little boxes so that they can decide exactly where particular groups fit on some kind of pecking order of how oppressed they are, and how much attention those groups deserve.

It's the same type of people. I seem to run in to them all the time, and they're not afraid to tell other "liberal" types or minorities exactly how "problematic" they are.

I normally don't agree with Bill Maher, but he is right here. I want to see the left destroy itself.

IT is why the GOP will continue to take the states and Gerrymander themselves into the House for the next 20 odd years.

Really? It was banned because of that? Not because it promoted rape of children? Or that any type of sex with men was dirty? Huh, the left sure can be funny sometimes

Ironically... I think we're becoming more like Republicans.

We give voice to every narrow-minded wacko in an effort to seem like we're grassroots.

Well, guess what: grassroots often include wackos.

An all-women's college cancelled it on the grounds that "not all women have vaginas". I have never personally encountered a transgender woman who cared either way about The Vagina Monologues and it was probably not transgender women trying to cancel the show. It's baffling.

America's 'left' (I use the term advisedly) has conventionally been a 'big tent'. The Republicans have (for the last decade, at least) demanded ideological purity. The left is not becoming more like the Republicans.

Hey we can't all be pseudo leftists who acts like a smug cunt with a love for germ theory denial, blatant sexism, vaccine denial, the anti-GMO movement, and a lack of proper understanding of how religion in any way works (bonus points for islamophobia) while also supporting terrorism, and the woo medicine establishment. If we all were then we would all be Bill Maher now that is scary.

It amazes me to this day how much he's still coveted by many leftists despite all of this. It's one of the worst recipes of crazy out there.

He's like an NSG atheist. Holds all religion in contempt, but saves special raeg for Islam which he believes telepathically promotes violence and rants about it like a right-winger.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

Just speculating here, but... this attacking the messenger does strike me as defensiveness.

Look, it's easy to instinctively take criticism of one's preferred team badly, but this criticism was needed. And if what comes to mind so quickly is an ad hominem reference to his flaws, you could find some for just about anyone who criticizes your team.

Now is a good time for us to put aside the insularity, take a step back and ask ourselves what about the left has created this kind of over-the-top infighting and zealotry.

Bill Maher has been outspoken about this for a while now; it's obvious that the political correctness gets under his skin (although I'm sure that most, if not all, of that editorial was written by his writers).

I definitely agree with him about the broader issue. My only big caveat is that infighting isn't entirely a bad thing. I find it very displeasing how polarized our politics have become in recent times, wherein there is a dichotomy enforced in the political realm: the conservative Republicans vs. the liberal Democrats. It has basically narrowed down the discourse to a two-sided paradigm, leaving little room for nuance and dissension. So to me it is a sign of strength and confidence in one's own beliefs that they are able to call out bullshit from those on their own "side". That is better than agreeing for the sake of agreeing.

That said, though, Maher is doing just that. And also, his larger point is essentially, why bother throwing a tantrum over a minor disagreement from those who mostly agree with you, instead of collectively raising outrage and awareness over those who do much, much worse things on the same issue. And that is a well-warranted point.

The most recent time Maher was called out on "political correctness" was after he aired his views on Islam. Is that what criticism he's trying to deflect?
